Finally managed to build mine: I'll make a video review next week. -

The 4 speed gearbox is 50% finished. It'll be awesome. I had no time yet to assemble the lego version, from which i'll then take all measurements. Thing is, that building the drivetrain layout accurately would actually make things a lot simpler and more compact (as i intend to prove). The designer of the lego version just built himself into a corner following the old lego model formula. -

The problem is, that the gearbox has no business being where it is and needs to be behind the engine. The reduction gear needs to be behind the gearbox. And the steering rack has no business being behind the front axle, where it is in the way of the gearbox. -

This U joint setup has no business being there in the first place. -

With the shock absorbers i was thinking about the rear axle. -

Use a different shock absorber setup then. Why are you engineering yourself into a corner? I'd use an elevated double wishbone setup in front. -

I didn't mean the lego torque tube. More something like this: -

A few things: If you are doing a gear reduction in the diff, use the new planetary hubs. The rear axle is way too big and heavy. When doing a live axle like that, i'd consider using a torque tube. When making a unibody, have the drivetrain (gearbox+engine) removable and not part of the structure of the car, like in TLG models. You want to save weight werever possible. -
Gears-efficient gearbox

I am waiting for the changeover plates before i can make my version. But just a comment... i'd use the old 2 stud driving rings, just to decrease overall length by 2 studs. Also, there's only 3 axles needed. The changeover axle being directly operated by the switching mechanism, like this: -

Need to get the orange shifting gears first to see how this would work. But the order can ofc be shuffeled around to get the desired order. -
Gears-efficient gearbox

There need to be 3 shafts. 2 with gears and 1 with the rotational sequential switches. The 2 variants. One without modified gears and one with modified gears: -

I'll build it in the afternoon. -

Essentially making it even more compact than i planned. That is brilliant. -

In this setup they mesh perfectly. This is just a compacted proof of concept. The gears will be controlled via the standard clutches. I am waiting for parts from bricklink to be able to build the final setup. -
I would use the new CV joints. Will try to devise something in the afternoon. The new hubs are useless because they are reduction hubs. I wish lego would make a version without reduction. I was hoping for one in the Discovery, but we got shafted again and have to live with a mere suggestion of steering.
