10305 Lion Knights' Castle 90th anniversary set
SirBlake replied to R0Sch's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
It’s a tired debate, and I believe Nexo has been properly categorized by authorities such as Bricklink and Eurobricks. Nexo isn’t associated with castle for good reasons that I’d rather not dig back up. As a life long castle fan, I can assure you that they certainly did give up on Castle for the better part of a decade. There’s some subjectivity to that conclusion, but there is no argument that can be made that can convince me that castle wasn’t abandoned during that time. Castles don’t have tank treads. Medieval soldiers are not robots. Chivalric knights do not pilot helicopters. I will continue to try and fight through it when it shows up, but if I had a magic wand, I would make it so “Nexo” could not be typed in the historic themes forum- 2,976 replies

They can consider Star Wars part of Lego castle history for all I care. We all know it’s not. Same with Nexo.- 2,976 replies

I can only speak for myself, but my tastes are pretty specific. Focused on castle, I’m interested in insights. For example, you got fantasy era stuff when new. I was in my dark age then, and would like to know what it was like being into it at the time. What came out first, what were the cool ones vs the sets that warmed shelves? What holes did you see in the line at the time? What has held up over time or what do you appreciate more now than you did at the time and why? Favorite bad guys (trolls vs skellies) and why. Any backstory or ads or literature around the theme that you remember? Like, was there some specific lore or story around it? I don’t know if the king has a name. Or the name of the evil Wizard and if there’s a story around him kidnapping the princess. Reviews are kind of everywhere. Certainly worth doing, but giving sets context is the really interesting thing.

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 23. Rumors and discussion
SirBlake replied to Robert8's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I 100% agree with your point, but again, that crybaby fest is already part of another thread. I’m among the most vocal. This isn’t about the packaging change, it’s about continuing a rant (and yes, it is a rant) in a place it’s not necessary or appreciated. Participants in this thread want to talk about this series specifically. Just because news affecting a completely different series that’s more than a year from now happens to be revealed with relative proximity does not make it relevant. It’s just peeing in everybody’s Cheerios because you’re mad about something. I’m mad about it too! Take it to the thread where the other mad people are. I’ll se you there. /sermon -
This sort of thing has been coming up more and more often, referencing reviewers or other builders who share their MOCs across the different platforms. I thought it might be nice to put some recommendations together and let people discover and share. There are some I've found recently that I wish I had known about sooner. 1. Steve's Lego Blog: http://legosteveblog.blogspot.com/2011/06/history-of-lego-castle.html Though it hasn't been updated in a long time, there are lots of good thoughts and examples here. Especially good for the younger FOL that didn't live through it when some of the older stuff was new. 2. Brick Monarch (YouTube & Instagram) Not only is he an active builder, he has a cool shop that sells T-shirts, stickers and wall decor shields featuring many faction designs. 3. The Brick Stop (YouTube & Instagram) Like Brick Monarch, a hardcore castle fan and builder that is very active. The best way to show off these last two is to post a video of the two of them in deep discussion about a specific theme. These guys are serious fans of Lego Castle and while I don't agree with all of their opinions, it's fun to see a couple of guys that are into this as much or more than I am really get into the details of this stuff. It'd be fun to sit down with them over a couple of beers. So how about y'all? Any good recommendations as far as sites/YouTube Channels/Instagram handles that are worth taking a look at?

Eh, I think it's fine. Being a Creator 3-in-1 without a cohesive theme around it makes it an outlier anyway. Plus, because of it's nature, is it fair to compare 3 of them combined with all 3 builds put together into one massive version (the way I have mine set up) vs. the others? Probably not. I'd say we can leave it as-is and let it be a write-in for anybody that just loves it that much.

This is a fun poll. Thanks for putting it together. I chose 2010 Kingdom's castle as the last great one, and 1984 6080 as the greatest. Here's why... Though neither is the most beautiful or sophisticated castle, 6080 set the stage for real Lego castle (with all due respect to the original, yellow with pink stickers all over it never did anything for me). I was 9 years old when I got it in '84, and it set the stage for a lifetime of appreciation for the theme, and for its time, it was an absolute revelation. The way it hinged open and connected to other sets like the blacksmith and armory was incredible, and provided many hours of play. It was bigger and badder than the Black Falcons stuff, and with so many guards, archers and knights, staked a claim as the centerpiece of the theme. I still love it for all of those reasons, so though Black Knight's castle is surely more interesting in a lot of ways, 6080 wins for being the first great one to exist, and it eclipses many, many castles that came later. As for the Kingdom's castle, the last couple of years can do a lot to reset our expectations, and we are lucky enough to be picky because we've gotten 3 all-time greats in quick succession, (If the Creator Medieval Castle was an option, I would have been very tempted to put it in this spot) but I remember 2010, and what it felt like to get 15+ years of crap served up to us (Just my opinion*). 7946 was a fantastic return to form, with what I felt were excellent minifigs and a clean, if somewhat plain, overall design that was a good nod to the classics that made Castle great in the first place. Adding some next-level offerings like MVR and especially the Joust, and man, what a great theme. It made 2013 Castle that much more disappointing. EDIT: also, the introduction of the Great Helm on kinghts. Love that piece. *mid-90's through to 2010 was my dark age for a reason. Royal/KK 1&2 are/were pretty much garbage to my eye, and while fantasy era offered outstanding minifigs and the greatness of MMV, I found the main castle to be lackluster and a whole lot of over-the-top or half-baked sets that didn't do much for me.

I wouldn’t think so. They repurposed the torso, lute, hat and gold coins from the CMF troubadour/minstrel and repurposed the Egyptian CMFs headpiece. Yeah, we’re finally getting insight into the secret tunnel and the gold frog reveal is new info too.- 2,976 replies

Great review from Brothers Brick with some nice reveals including how the drawbridge works, and what that cylindrical piece is by the baker’s oven (it’s a water well/fountain). https://www.brothers-brick.com/2022/07/13/lego-iconic-10305-lion-knights-castle-part-one-the-castle-review/#more-352073- 2,976 replies

I don't know how I missed this the first time, but this is great. The integration of the raised baseplate is a really nice touch. -

I just found another cool detail. It looks like, at least on the two hardtops, that it has fuzzy dice hanging from the rearview mirror. Pretty fun. -

I own and love the Mustang as well, but I have to recognize that I'm biased. I have a '66 in real life, so I can't count on myself to have an objective opinion. Did anyone notice that this Camaro comes with some different trim options? In that lineup of 3 cars, the one with red stripes has the hideaway headlights. That's a really nice touch. -

SirBlake replied to Vilhelm22's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I noticed that too. It looks good, as it gives some finer detail to the fender lip, but it'd be better if they were more rounded, instead of flattened out at the top. At least, for a Camaro. -

Nice! So happy to finally have photos. The red interior is a nice touch, but I must say, I think it looks best as a convertible. -
The “Ewok Village” idea is a perfect example. So perfect, when Robin Hood Prince of Thieves came out in the early 90’s, Hasbro repurposed the Ewok Village set for the action figure line. I could also see a “bridge toll” set, fitting the original Robin Hood concept (meeting Little John), Archery Tournament for the same reasons. There would be room for a river boat, a noble’s wagon holdup, a soldier ambush set, a cave hideout behind a waterfall, etc. that’s with about 3 minutes of thought. With more time spent, I’m sure plenty of other opportunities would present themselves.

Interesting. I can’t agree with that, because I think there was plenty of life left in it when it fizzled, but always good to hear a contrary perspective.

Wow, very nice job on this. It’s a good set to adapt for that classic GTS color scheme. I’d try it myself, but I can’t bring myself to take my Mustang apart. :) -

Fantastic! A really fun idea beautifully executed. I admire your dedication making the walls out of plates. -
I love it! Thanks for posting that. I think the results are interesting, but not too surprising. Makes sense to me. From a purely graphic standpoint, I’d have to say that the Kingdoms Lions is my favorite too.
