Yes, that part was a real eye-opener for me. That's what I picked too. Even though the great helm is... well, great. lol
-
I was with you until I saw that the newer "ridged" pauldrons (Bricklink's term) is now being produced in pearl dark grey. I'm going to outfit my Black Falcons with those and pearl dark grey great helms. That's gonna look good. Already set the guards up with pearl dark grey conicals, and archers with PDG kettle helms.

Which were those?

Yeah, I get that. Jousting gear vs. fighting gear makes a lot of sense. I lucked out and came out of my dark ages with Kingdoms, just in time for LotR and CMF. I feel very fortunate there because it’d be an expensive endeavor to catch up on the last ten years. Especially 2011-12. Lots of good stuff in there.

A comment in another thread got me thinking, thanks to things like CMF and the new sets from the last couple of years, we have more options for how a knight or soldier can be outfitted than ever. For instance, if you had asked me a few years ago how a knight should be equipped to look it’s best, my answer would be something like: pointed visor helmet, printed breastplate armor, classic shield. But I’m really coming around on the great helm, good torso print, shoulder pauldrons and newer tall CMF bear style shield look. I think because the pauldrons bulk them up and let a nice torso print do the work. What do you think? If you were designing a faction from scratch, what parts would you use? NOTE: this gets really complicated when you add in licensed themes, dwarves/trolls/vikings, CMF one-offs and unique named characters. If you have a write-in candidate, please add it.

10305 Lion Knights' Castle 90th anniversary set
SirBlake replied to R0Sch's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
It’s a physical store. I’m sure they do exist in Florida. If you feel like a road trip, I believe Atlanta Brick Co. is the largest physical non-TLG Lego store in the country. One of the winners of Lego Master season 2, Mark Erickson works there. https://atlbrick.com/ I don’t know where in Florida you are, but here’s one in Port Charlotte. https://bricksandminifigs.com/port-charlotte-fl/- 2,976 replies

If this is in reference to Teri’s comment how it doesn’t fit with the era, I think he’s referring to this era in Lego Castle. This one being a reference to mostly 80’s crusader era, and Majisto appearing after the lions/crusaders had ended in the 90’s. I don’t think anybody is disputing the inclusion of a wizard in Lego castle in general or in reference to history/mythology surrounding the time.

10305 Lion Knights' Castle 90th anniversary set
SirBlake replied to R0Sch's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I just got off the phone with my local used lego store (shout out to Rogue Brick, truly wonderful folks there) https://www.roguebrick.com/ They're ordering the new Lion Knight's Castle for me. I've sold them enough stuff and got enough store credit built up that I'm only having to pay $100 out of pocket. Not a bad deal.- 2,976 replies

lol @ the hashtag Yes, Majisto is extremely disappointing. I'll probably toss him in a drawer and use the latest BaM wizard. The print on that guy is outstanding. Possibly the best wizard we've ever gotten. Thanks to thebrickpost for the great photo. https://www.thebrickpost.com/news/new-figs-on-the-block-the-knights-of-bam/

Ah, well I guess that makes sense. I read that first post a month ago, but forgot that detail.
-
Very interesting. Thanks for the added detail. I’m jealous, as I’ve never been to a real historic castle before. That is likely a big blind spot for me as far as accuracy goes. The lack of end-support on the drawbridge still doesn’t really bother me, but I see where you’re coming from. The tiny courtyard, such as it is, that’s there isn’t much, but does the job well enough for it to not be a big sticking point for me. The fact that the gate house is also the main entrance to what seems to be the keep, or at least the largest part of the castle rather than leading to an open area is a little weird, but again, these small quibbles are so far outweighed by so many other aspects, I just can’t let it bother me.

The horses are fun. Reminds me of these: http://bricker.info/sets/383-2/

Same. As much as I love the classic crusaders and black knights castles, even the dinky black falcons sets, this new one makes them all look so simple. Disregarding the scale and part usage for a moment, just the nature of how the angles work, with hidden passages that I’m still trying to get my head around… I can’t wait to build it!

Yeah that’s super cool. Really deserves its own thread.

Latest impact of other themes on historic themes
SirBlake replied to Wardancer's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I certainly respect the impact of nostalgia, and see the value in the perspective of a 6 year old when it comes to this stuff. 30 year old me didn’t get it, lol. -
Could be that, could be the same plate that’s wearing out.

Nice work on the snow. Really makes the bridge pop.
