  1. It's actually alittle controversial to say there have been "black" girls in Friends, since the skincolor Andrea and Joanna used is "dark flesh", which is majorly used by tribal natives, and we're not sure if TLG would introduce a "darker" minidoll. Vitruvius also uses dark flesh, not dark tan. Duplo is the only figure type that have all three ordinary skin colors for ladies so far, as I can see. And if we're looking for real-world African people, Storm is the only African lady so far, despite her origin is fictional. It's more like a common problem in the film industry where those dark skin actress's seldom become the leading heroines in order to be in LEGO sets.
  2. Ironically many CMF characters were pure villains, and making them playable in a heroic fantasy game would lead them to the way of anti-heroes . And actually it doesn't bother if we can have a special series based on the original game characters, suppose that all characters from special series won't be playable in this title. It looks like more villains in this game would be purely consisted of exited physical parts (much like the those mohawk troublemakers from LEGO City). Oh, and of course you may not crush those large monsters into small blindbags. The alternative way could be that some playable villains can only be unlocked by beating them. But I'm not sure how it works.
  3. I think it misses the mark. Just like saying that there are no/veryfew firefighting women on the world, we're not majorly discussing real world references. This project was meant to reflect on the fact that LEGO sets that have only male minifigures can be easily found, but those with female ones only are very, very rare (excluding girls-oriented themes). It's all about the design and illusion of products, not the real world issues. Also with that saying I think CMF series would come to an end very soon. And "there should be more sets with both female and male figures together", it's not a bad thing but depends. For example, LEGO 60042 Police Chase made it different by adding a female criminal this year. Friends the theme also lacks boys on several occasions. Simply ignoring feminism, if the project does bring a new variety for Town fans, it should be positive and nothing wrong anyway.
  4. The animations and voices were not good enough at first, despite the first episode needed more vivid character moves. I believe that the later episodes would improve. I agree with the music part. The songs are not too bad, but looks like TLC overadvertise the music part and they asked the plot writers to include one song in each episode. The first episode needs a performance, and the Dolphin Cruise tries to ultilize it in a creative way, but the rest don't seem very reasonable, especially the Sunshine Ranch one. I'd like to see Andrea having more chances in persuing her dream rather than just randomly performing with her friends somewhere on the roadside. The singing contest was an interesting addition to Ninjago (though not an obvious setting, one member of them also happens to be a singer). Perhaps there should be several more Friends episodes that don't involve music? Olivia's mother briefly appeared in episode 1, where Aunt Sophie played a bigger role. As mentioned, the animation story has referred many adult characters who have no phsyical appearances. But seriously, there is no adult in the summer camp? The webisode just updated a short story about the jungle series. It's alittle worrying that there won't be a full-length jungle adventure. Oh, and Jacob is forgotten again.
  5. Sorry, I posted the same pic in reply #33. Okay, now I believe you. I remember the BTTF instruction didn't have anything on the back, did it? Not Mr. Waller shouting? I found this pic posted by Mr. Waller. Does her smile look abit more believable?
  6. Well as mentioned, there have been female characters/figures doing science researches and these figures aren't that exciting to FOLs. The only thing that truly deserves praise is that this is the first LEGO Cuusoo/Ideas set to include females, despite that they're not individual characters like Dr Brown or Steve. Among the Plan B's, I like the mechanic the most, The zookeeper is interesting in its building, but there have been CMF zookeeper and molded tigers. Firefighters are not something new in LEGO world, not even to say there are already official female firefighters in regualr sets.
  7. It's been a pretty long while since Friends strike the market, but its meda advertising side seems not to be discussed yet. I made some searching and there was a thread about one episode, but I think a new thread would bring a more thorough discussion. (Or if there have been other threads, please help me merge them.) Different from the very popular and long-run action theme series Ninjago and The Legend of Chima, Welcome to Heartlake City isn't a regular TV show. There are currently three full-length episodes, but each episode is divided into ten mini webisodes on the website. Episode list: Episode one: New Girl in Town :These are the most recent official videos, so far there are eight webisodes and they all feature the 2014 spring wave sets. Some of them reused the plot from comic strips. The series do a good job in ultilizing those products that can’t be featured in a long-length story. Other future updates, see new replies below. In advertising aspects: Needless to say, animations based on LEGO themes are all meant to advertise LEGO products. Unlike Chima and Ninjago, currently Friends is more like Hero Factory that would only release one or two episodes featuring a certain wave rather than giving a full-lenth continuous story. Judging from out physical products, 3185 Summer Riding Camp is the only previous large set that wasn’t actually ultilized in the cartoon story. It had a glimpse in the first episode, but we weren’t able to see how Mia got her trainings in the riding school. As commented, I’d see the horse riding competition get its own episode rather than clashing with other events. Heartlake High, the other iconic building of this theme also appears in two episodes, which is fairly enough. The next upcoming large set is the Shopping Mall, but we’re not sure if there would be an episode featuring this. Also the jungle rescue series also seems to deserve its own animation story. That means there should be at least three new episodes during this year, but is it what TLC plan to do? Those we didn’t see in physical sets: Conclusion: Overall ”Welcome to Heartlake City” is a good cartoon series that parents may let children watch. I’m not very familiar with other girls-oriented cartoon series inspired by toys, which are mostly developed by the largest comeptitor Mattel. Mattel's Monster/EverAfter High and Hasbro's MLP series are all fantasy-related stories, so they're not in the comparisons. Barbie, one of the modern life storyline, currently has its own web series Life in the Dreamhouse. It also happens to have a brick toy line by MegaBloks, but the idea behind the sets are pretty different. Barbie isn't a schoolgirl so she can just enjoy her fabulous and luxury fashion icon life, while our young girls don't. Though not being a brick toy line, Polly Pocket also shares some similarities with the series, and its toy has some buildings along with the dolls. However, the series overfocuses on the fun side of "Pollyville", while the life in Heartlake City focuses on "do-it-by-yourself" concepts. Their earlier short cartoon series in 2000s also had some problems with rivalries and blended family issue. As mentioned in product advertising, even though Friends wouldn’t have a continuous storyline like Chima and Ninjago have, there could be more single stories based on medium and large sets. Ironically, Chima and Ninjago, especially Ninajgo, have a larger fanbase consisted of girls owing to the successful TV series. Is ”Welcome to Heartlake City” able to go bigger in the future in order to appeal those girls too? Or.....
  8. Personally I wouldn't say this is the main goal. First of all, I suppose that TLG haven't really devoted themselves to advertising Friends along with the other themes, which wouldn't encourage girls to take a look at other LEGO products that are not Friends. Just like the change of title, I would like to focus on the scenarios of this set more than the gender marketing issue. If attracting girls is the purpose, I guess Research Institute would have failed due to losing to Olivia's Lab, or the alternate solution is adding some scientist minifigures to Oliva's Lab. The only difference is that no minidoll characters have worn "physical" white coats so far (as I can remember, in the video game Ms Steven and Olivia got to wear coats in class). I do think ther other two scenarios of this project are original enough to be a new product. I like the skeleton exhibitation and I hope TLG can make good redesigns. And even though Alatariel also made some Plan B scenarios in case any of the original three scenarios didn't meet TLG's standard, now it seems like that TLG would keep all three original scenarios under the main idea of "Research".
  9. I think this idea shouldn't go too far. This set just simply encourages us to get rid of our LEGO stereotypes, not mean to be a supplement pack of female characters. In your saying, it would be that you want to see a Pirate ship set having no female minifigures and rather get them in an independent pack. I would support with you if you can come up with a scenario where only female characters gather around (eg, a reef rock where three singing female mermaids sit on).
  10. My interpretion of your saying is, Ideas team already predicted that all projects from this review wouldn't pass, so they just try to postpone the other approved project in order to turns away wrath. But then again, we should beware that Ideas review periods are not a compeition where only one project may be approved. The fact is, the team still can't prove it by giving us two projects at one time. I personally don't mind to see all projects in the same review get rejected if they're all obviously out of LEGO's range, so I'm not with this saying. Now looking into the next review, actually there are more than two projects which have the traits to be official products: Doctor Who and BTTF are both approved IPs, while the Bird project is also what TLG had done in Creator sets. If "review period" means "competition", then it would cause a big problem in this review.
  11. Okay, obviously many people have had enough with that crazy boy, what about her? She is giving a sweet smile, not a hideous shouting . (All from Silentmode.tvbelow) And as result, the Lady Robot.... uh, no, Emma takes the seat instead? I wonder why TLC wouldn't call Max and Nina back. It would also be interesting to feature more characters in differet advertising.
  12. Sherlock already got to Hong Kong and Taiwan, it's just that I'm not into this show . I can relate to what you're saying, so it might be right for the team not to approve this license. Now I just wish that Big Bang Theory would have any better chance to pass.
  13. Uh.., let's not forget the fact that one of the protagoinsts from Friends is also a scientist-to-be , so getting a female scientist isn't the main idea behind this project (and unfortunately for this designer, right after the project was submitted, TLC officially introduced a female scentist minifigure and Gail the construction worker). The main goal of this set is to prove that the non-girls-oriented themes or sets should have a better distribution of genders. So far Creator minifigure sets have pretty good balance, but others like Police and Firefighter don't, despite they've been trying to improve. You may see two guys driving a truck in a set, but it would never be two ladies driving a heavy hauler. That is what the project wants to represent The original project name might be too political. Giving it a normal name makes better difference.
  14. I'm not sure about that. The team particularly annoucned that Doctor Who is welcome, so it should mean that some other TV drama series should also stand a chance. I'm not sure if murders would be the key issue why real detective drama series is not proper for LEGO. I think the Aventure Time model is pretty nice, but do I support this? I stopped watching that right after Finn broke up with Princess Bubblegum. As you said these licenses need a full theme, and the production budget can afford this kind of cartoon projects. But as result, that means only licenses with human-like characters have good chances to achieve. while the very cartoonie ones don't. Unless TLC would just produce only one set for this license. D'oh, yes, they just did something like that recently. Totally disagree with your second point. If it isn't appealling, I guess Modular houses should be cancelled long time ago, and Ninjago is also a proof that western consumers are interested in Japanese culture. Your first point makes better explanation. I would say the previous Western Town had the same problem only if the it wasn't rejected for a wrong reason.
  15. I'm not surprised to see Female Minifigure Set pass. But to be honest, even though I really support this one, it's the least interesting project due to its similarity with existed City/Minifigures line, while the others are more original. Most of the sets have license issues that may not fit in LEGO's marketing strategy. The only problem might be the Japanese Archtecture, which could have bring a totally different wave to our existed modular buildings which are mostly European styles. It's better that LEGO would officially give something else instead one day. And the fact that really makes fans dissapoint would be that only "ONE" project passes in a single period. Yes, maybe it's a coincidence and we can't push it, but if this situation continues, voters would lose interests in making votes since more votes wouldn't result in more products.
  16. As I can read Japanese, the text below from the catalogue pic confirmed the previous list. Nice to see the Dino Tracker being a lady, but I'm alittle surprised it's not a hairpiece from Padmé due to their similarity. Some people complained that the Dino Tracker and Space Miner aren't very recognizeable, maybe it would depend on their bios. The Game Dude is fairly realistic, but I'm not sure he's more apppealing than the previous two DJs. The Wizard is a pretty decent design. Let's see if he'll play any role in later Castle sets and what TLC would do to the previous wizard designs. Overall the six designs do raise the bar of Minifigure series and are a good comeback of normal series. Let's wait for the rest ones! Well looks like Ms Simpsons had asked TLG for something but a result they could only manage to give a new addition to Johnny Thunder's team (in many meanings) . Reminds me of the Alien Queen. Maybe her bio would relate to the Dino theme, for example, she's the missing leader whom her fellow have been searching for?
  17. Sorry, yeah, I'm talking about those fakers. We can figure out that they were simply throwing those figures to some random LEGO sets (these two are Ninjago and LoTR, I think). Regardless of the facts there are more ordinary Town sets, I believe that it's also pretty simple to produce school sets based on some MOC instructions.
  18. Alright. I'm not a purist, so maybe I'd choose to draw decals. In your case, if you don't mind paintings, the closest one to Bernie's hair is the Sleepyhead. For Peg, her hairpiece might be more similiar with Velma's or the classic Town hair .
  19. The reviews are pretty thorough, well detailed and never suitable for underages as always. There are many good details in the mall, but I still wish that there could be a better design to combine each independent building. The bride looks a little cheap (in minifigures' way, just compare the CMF one with the Town Hall one). The dummies without heads look alittle horrible, so maybe there should be some gray heads with no prints, oh, and wedding veils too. I don't see ice cream bikes in my own countries, so I'm not sure how real ones work. Simply binding a bike with a kart is the fastest way for TLG. The Ice Cream Bike set is nice but the rest part is alittle trival. Maybe it's more like a City park supplement pack if you've got some plants and green plates.
  20. Uhmmm... reaction: why don't you make the Springfield Elementary if you have that time? Weirdly the copycats have time to draw 3D graphics or take photos instead of making appealing designs.
  21. Absolutely adorable!! Duplo customization is not as frequent as minifigs', and you've done pretty good job, though you may never appy it to LEGO Ideas.
  22. [quote name=KCMatze' timestamp='1401127140' post='190003There might be a hint to the Video Game Guy in his designs also...here (at the bottom, left): http://4.bp.blogspot...terDesign06.jpg I'd REALLY like to see his Giants getting realized, too. But yeah, that will never happen! http://3.bp.blogspot...terDesign07.jpg I personally think this one is like the Computer Programmer, and the rumor said the new guy will use DJ's headphone piece instead. Would the bottom right one be the spooky girl? Thanx. The current problem is, as long as TLG keeps going with Disney, it's difficult for them to create another bunch of heroines directly based on the most notable princess stories again. I assume that the rumored Fairytale Princess would be more generic and typical. She would get every characteristic that a fairytale heroine should have, much like the idea of Belville heroines or Giselle from Enchanted. We can see that this designer wanted to begin a fairytale project, which is for regular sets. So the plan might be having a cottage set with three piglets together and the big bad wolf. But is it possible for us to get all three brothers in CMFs, or we should wait for Chima an independent theme? If not, it'd still be an oridinary costume.
  23. Wow, this character is older than me , sorry for my lack of knowledge about it. So it is a scene from Edward and Friends the show. In today's view I guess Tinpot may be redesigned as a buildable robot?http://www.brickshel...y.cgi?i=5926631
  24. Uh... sorry, may you differ "fairytale princess's" from "damsels-in-distess"? Yeah, that's why they're good at this. Castle has been a pretty frustrating theme for gender balance. Fighting or magical female members are too rare in LEGO royalties. There are exceptions (eg Princess Storm), but it seems like that TLG would only make the female ones as particular characters or CMFs rather than putting them in a generic army. Well this one looks like a sophisticated aristocrat, while a typical (fairytale) princess might be younger and more inexperienced.
