Very cool project, and I respect your "keep it simple" priority. I'm working on a hooklift myself, so this topic piques my interest. I have spent the past two weeks trying to figure out the arm geometry, for both the lift and the dump functions, and the lock for the two and I like the solutions you have accomplished. I can't figure out what is going on with the center arm pivot, as it looks more complex than a simple joint. Can you show how it folds to pick up the container when on the ground?

[TC27] Fire truck
Thirdwigg replied to Jeroen Ottens's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This is looking very good. The ladder, specifically the reach is very well done. I'm interested to see the new worm gear option for the ladder extension, but I understand the time that may take for a full ladder rebuild. -
Thanks, and I too, hope I can finish both. I agree. It is the truck I am currently more interested in, but motivation can change. I'll will be fun to watch the progress. I'm glad you like the Knuckleboom truck. It was a fun one for me to make.

[TC27] Heavy Duty Forklift
Thirdwigg replied to Stereo's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Great idea for a project; I look forward to the progress that you make. I'm also interested to see how the new worm screws work with the lifting mech. Good luck. -
I have not been building much in the last couple of months, so another Eurobricks Technic contest was just the invitation I needed to start a new project. While I'm not opposed to using the 49.5mm tires in a creative way like a tractor or construction machine, I have two trucks that have been sitting on my queue for about two years. Since neither has gone anywhere, I thought now might be the time to explore if they have any merits to continue. At the risk of making the same mistake I did with TC22 where I focused on two builds and couldn't easily decide on which MOC to submit, I am going to try this approach again. At least this time, they will have significant similarities and identical subassemblies. Crane Tipper This truck has been on my workbench for about a year after I found this picture, so I took the truck down and started working on it. After a quick draft, below is what I have (I know the rear tires are not right. I'm limited on my tire parts right now). It's straightforward design with RWD, front engine and steering, a tipper bed, and a center folding crane. The crane will be the limiting factor on this build, so I'll spend more time on that next. Below is a simple draft of the crane folding mechanism, but I'm not sure how I can make it work with the large gear rack and mount. After a little more building last night, I was able to rebuild the full chassis, in a way that will connect with the other truck. Hooklift Truck A hooklift truck is the second idea which uses 6 wheels, and is modeled after this truck I found a number of years ago. The truck will use the same front end as the tipper, but will have six wheels, and will have a hook lift on the rear. Front and rear steering will bookend the center drive wheel which will drive the front motor. Below is the first draft (again, sorry about the wheels). I think I am able to keep the same front chassis and cab between the two trucks. Right now the current headache is the hook lift mechanism. I would like to have the two function hook lift and bed tilt function, but it's causing some issues. I'll keep at it, and see what I can come up with. Below is the second draft to see if I can integrate the same front end for both trucks and steering needs. So far, it seems like I can. We'll see where this goes. Both trucks have some challening aspects, so I may just follow the path of least resistance. If both finish, I'll be happy to have two new MOCs. In the meantime, it's good to be building again.

I see, I guess that’s why 71708 is still unavailable in orange.- 5,466 replies

Many of the 42196 parts are available through PAB in USA. I think the photo above is just missing them. Did you search the set number to see what's available?- 5,466 replies

I'm excited about another bus project! I love a good articulated bus, and I'm look forward to the solutions you come up with.

[TC27] 90s Kei Truck
Thirdwigg replied to Seasider's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Glad to see you are in another contest @Seasider. It's a fun little project you have, and I like the ideas presented so far. I love these little Kei pickups, so I'm excited to see this progress. -
[TC27] Compact Backhoe
Thirdwigg replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Interesting project, and I'm interested to see what you are able to do. It looks like a lot of functions will be placed, particularly in the rear. I hope you are able to get the sliding mechanism working well, but I like the change from the scissors to the gear rack. Are you able to change the pivot from the worm with 20 tooth gear system to a worm and 8 tooth gear system? It might help to get the digger a little closer to the cab. It looks a little too long to my eye right now. -
[MOC] Unimog U20
Thirdwigg replied to Thirdwigg's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks! Thanks for the comment, and I'm glad you like the look. I'm always up for a contest, but it might be a good idea to step back from the MOGs for a bit. Thanks again for the kind words. I am always up for a new part, and a portal axle hub would be great, but I think I have founds some good solutions in the meantime. The internals are quite different. This one is 13/14 studs wide, while the U423 and U4000 are 15 studs wide. So the whole drivetrain was reworked. Because of this, there is no transmission or other internal functions such as a PTO or winch. I may never try a 13 wide truck at this scale again. I'm pulling my hair out trying to get the U90 (also 13 wide) to work. -
[MOC] Unimog U20
Thirdwigg posted a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Continuing on the theme of the 1:21 scale Unimogs, I have designed another little Unimog that I am ready to share: the Unimog U20 from 2006-2013. I think of the U20 as the weird one, as it is the only one that had a cab forward design. While I like the look of the U20, it's look is different from all the other Unimogs over the years, that it looks a little different. Like the U423, and the U4000, this one has a number of different features and attachment points. It includes: Steering with HOG Rear wheel drive with portal axle and I2 engine Rear pendular suspension Tipping cab Three-way tipping bed with side HOG Opening cab doors Front attachment point (using the same U423 standard) Center attachment point for toolbox or crane (with side HOG for crane) Instructions are available at Rebrickable.com The center toolbox has a little room to store stuff. You can remove this box by removing two small pins, and adding a Crane. Which folds up nicely. Finally, all of the front attachments for the U423 will work on the U20 as well. A little brush was created for this MOC, and is freely available at Rebrickable.com. And a little video to see it all in action. I hope you all enjoy, and the Unimog U90 (the ugly one) is next! -

Thirdwigg's MOCs
Thirdwigg replied to Thirdwigg's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
As is all too common, I have a number of WIP projects currently, and I was feel like nothing was getting finished. In these situations, it's helpful for me to start something small and fun. So in the space of a week, I put this little tractor together as a celebration of my first LEGO set, 6524 Blizzard Blazer. You may find Free Instructions at Rebrickable.com. The tractor features: Steering with HOG Rear PTO Front attachment point Rear attachment point and hitch I have not posted the rear tedder instructions yet, but they will be posted soon. With a front plow. Rear PTO and mount. And a little video that shows the limited functions. Enjoy! -

Game changer? How so? It's an interesting part no doubt, and I can see application, but I cannot yet imagine a use that could not have been done using other parts?- 5,466 replies
