Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
stevkir replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I will reserve my ultimate judgement on this set for once I actually see it, but I don't think I am liking what I read about this right now. -
Its comments like this that sometimes makes me think about opening a BL store as I have those parts as extras just laying around that I know I don't need. If you are building the PC, GG and PR, you are going to be feeling the shakes once those are all done and nothing to build.

How many parts from each set I don't know but I would say about 70% maybe a little more can be picked up from the online PAB. You would have a better chance of getting more of the parts you need ordering them from Bricks and Pieces if you are going to get them from the LEGO site. PAB orders will most likely take a month to get to you from the order date and as a few can attest to, you could end up waiting much longer for them. BnP orders seem to come in quicker than PAB orders at least here in the States they do as BnP orders come from a location in Olive Branch, Missouri, where as PAB orders come from Poland.

To build it from parts ordered from BL it will cost closer to $250-350 or maybe a bit more. I have about 400 pieces for it that I scrounged from parts I already had so my costs will come in lower compared to someone buying all of them from BL. But when compared to $1,200 for it that people are asking for it on BL and Ebay it is a steal to order the individual bricks and build it yourself.

Salt Lake City, Utah is gearing up for it's Comic Con in September and if the numbers from last years first run means anything it will be a huge one this year with better set up with more convention space used and better events scheduled. There is a Comic Con Fan Experience this coming week from the 17th - 19th and already has some huge ticket sells for that one. The fan experience already has a huge line up of actors scheduled with almost all the TNG cast, Nathan Fillion and Karen Gillan (if you like hot redheads from Doctor Who). My understanding that there will be a large LEGO display there but you will have to double check with a local EBer about it as I don't know much about what they are doing. http://saltlakecomiccon.com

I will take 2 salted pretzels, nacho cheese and a lemon aid please. Very cool, I will have to remember to make a food cart for my modular city. Love food carts.

I am hoping for an inverted corner building for the next modular or at least another set like the PS with 2 16x32 base plates.

You seem to be more mechanical/abstract in your designing style and from what you tend to build I am guessing you don't have many windows and other elements for architectural touches. I think you have a good start and should keep refining them. getting one of the current sets and building one will give you a lot of experience on how they look and feel. I would recommend getting the Pet Shop modular if you ever feel like picking one up as it is 2 16x32 base plate buildings and will give you 2 examples to build in one set.

I would say it has something to do with your humidity. Though I live in a dessert and dust can get bad in the summer time. But all I really have to do is use one of those swifter dusters and cleans most of it away.

These are the same that are now in the Murray, Utah store. Last I saw we didn't have quite this many bins labeled and was told there would be more added over the next few days. Top row: space ship windshield (trans black), right or left 6x3 wedges (light blay), aircraft engines (black), medium wheel hubs, 1x1 round plate (pink), large tires 2 studs wide. 2nd row: aircraft 1/2 stud wide tires, plant with 3 leafs, 2x2 axles (light blay), 1x4 plate axles (Black), small wheel hubs, not sure but may be a V shaped plate (black) 3rd row: right or left 6x3 wedges (light blay), not sure (black), 1x1 round plate (trans med blue), air plane tails (white), 1x1 brick 5 studs (black), (trans clear) possible more 1x1 plates. 4th row: airplane propeller (black), 1x1 trans clear plates, antenna (black and light blay), 1x2 tile (lime green), Cone (trans red), cone (trans blue) Here is a photo of what I grabbed from these parts that were listed from my cup I picked up on Friday.

First off it needs to be split up between levels so you can pull them apart which is accomplished by using 1xsomething tiles at the top of each level with 1-2 studs showing per side. Architectural detailing around windows, roof lines, and doors. The sidewalks use dark blay tiles with the white lamp posts. The first few modulars didn't have any interiors done but since the Green Grocer they have become known for not just the building but also the interior design. Also they connect to each other with technic pins at the bottom of the building in 2 spots on each side. I will break up this post a bit with pictures of what I mean later once my iPhone recovers from death by child watching Netflix videos last night.

I had no idea that the price went up until after I read this thread last night. I talked to my wife and she said she had noticed the difference while I was packing a cup yesterday with all the new stuff on the wall. As you can tell I really didn't notice or care about the price difference as I was going to fill and buy a cup no mater its cost.

Cool cool, I have started spending some time in LDD modifying official LEGO sets and have found it quite fun. Keep it going more you play with it the more you spend on this habit. :D

I will have to admit I am sure I would be one of those AFOL's that has to lean over and touch to see how it was put together. I know someone here in Utah that is getting ready for the Fan Experience Comic Con 17-19 this month with a large LEGO display. Salt Lake Comic Con is quickly becoming one if not the largest Comic Con in the US, so if you ever get a chance to swing by for one of them I would love to see your stuff first "hand".

That is the Delorian from Back to the Future and if you look on top of the TH you can see Doc Brown by the clock. When I have space for a street and town square I plan on running a line from the clock tower to a light pole and placing the Delorian on the street. Freaking love Back to the Future and one of my all time favorite movies. I went with the PR because I find it much more architecturally appealing than the PC and the interior of the PR is hands down the best designed out of all of them. I put the first level of PR together last night and finished it this morning/afternoon and now feeling the blues. I have an itch to rip it apart and build it again as it seemed to quick of a build and I need more. Maybe I am just comparing it subconsciously to my GG build because I spent time ordering parts from BL, PAB and BnP and taking a few weeks to slowly have it built. I am sure I have the buy the parts and build it from scratch bug and buying a pre made set just doesn't do it for me anymore. I have about another half a modular space left on that shelf and when I get the CC or MS built I will either place half the MS on that shelf or remove a section of the pet store and place in another 32x32 modular and place the remaing 2.5 modulars on my wife's shelf. I really need to find a way to display them better out in the open instead of hiding away in my closet. I live in a 1,100 sf (102 square meters for those that are not from the States) apartment with 3 bedrooms 2 baths and displaying them will not be easy.

Purchased the PR and I have a bit of my GG built since the last picture of my modulars was posted.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
stevkir replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I ended up taking back a Tower Bridge set I picked up for my wife back in February today to the local LEGO store that my wife showed no interest in building. Used the money to get the PR and each of my kids picked out small set with what was left over. Added over 500 points with that swap, which made it well worth the tip. The only current selling set I don't have now is the Cinema and hope to have that one in time for my birthday in June. PS is definitely worth the buy as it is a beautiful set and love that it is 2 16x32 base plate buildings instead of 1 32x32. -
Bricklinking the GG, MS and CC is very much cost effective compared to buying one. The GG goes for $600+, MS is 1,200+ and not sure of the CC. You can save even more if you are not a purist and willing to modify your set a little to get away from the hard to find or expensive parts. For my GG I won't be spending more than $350-400 and that is including the multiple shipping charges using BL, PAB and BnP.
-
for a quick spreadsheet just go to the GG inventory list on Bricklink and click on the printer view option. Then copy the full list and paste it directly into Excel or Numbers if you use a Mac. From there you can adjust it as much as you want and its easy once all the items have been listed from the pasting.

I totally understand the reasoning behind the Doctor Who projects having more than 1 getting to 10,000 in a review period. I was just pointing out that there was one. Granted at the time of his post the announcement about being able to submit Doctor Who and them being accepted for the review had not been done yet. But the fact is it still happened very soon after his statement and that is all I was meaning by my statement. I too do not foresee another time like this unless Cuusoo makes another announcement like they did for Doctor Who. Kinda one of those Murphy's Law, where you say it shouldn't happen and it does soon after.

Cough... Doctor Who... Cough. Since everyone was talking about the Ghostbusters set coming out in June I was wondering about the building that was posted with the car. I talked to an employee at my local LEGO store and he said the guy was offering the LDD for it for download since it wasn't chosen to be produced like the car. Is there a location where I can get that and take a look at the LDD for it?

I like the variation in height. It gives it a more realistic feel to the buildings as in any real city the floor heights and the mount of floors per building are not always the same. one building could have floor to ceiling heights of 2.74 meters and the other 3.35 meters. Did it in meters since 80% of the world uses it and us crazy Americans still use the feet. Who knows maybe in a few years after the US dollar is no longer being used as the world currency because we print money to pay our debts and the US is in another recession in a year or 2 from now we will adjust to the world for our measurements.

You guys are all talk about IKEA and I just want to puke. A doctor my wife works for says it best, "gram cracker furniture".

I went with the wood print because I had some from a Lone Ranger set that had some great parts that I had already scavenged parts from. Figured I would try them out and see if I liked it or not and possibly save a couple bucks in the process. In the end I too don't think I will stay with them as I can get them from the BnP site at the moment with the rest of the parts I need.

I know the feeling on the wait for PAB orders as I had to wait a good 4 weeks for the ones I ordered to come in and that was 204 parts. took over a week just for them to send the order and about 2.5 weeks for delivery. I made an order request on BL from a guy in Denmark a week later and those came in a couple days before the PAB order did. 2 years ago I did a PAB order that took a month to deliver after being shipped. The only good part of that was the fact after 24 days of not getting it I called customer service and they ended up shipping out the order again. A week later I received the second order and then a few days later received the original order. I too am not able to do level 2 or 3 but that is more of a $$ problem than waiting on parts to come in. I have only been able to complete the bottom level and the roof/balcony. I have about another 130 parts to be able to complete it and will cost me $44 for a BnP order to get them.
