Well, the turning point for me is really that the forward mast is her main mast. On schooner and brig variations, the main mast is the aftmost mast. And historically, ketches wore squaresails on their main. I agree about the jib pointing the wrong way, though.

Thanks, Bart! Those are brilliant - I will go experiment at once! And when I come up with something, I will post it here.

I checked that index, and didn't really find a design I liked - I will go check it again, and then link it here. Edit: Here is the link to the cannon index.

Lovely rounded tower, Titus! I agree, 16x16 is a very small space, but you could have made a 20*12, for instance. That might give you more flexibility. I think this makes sense as a tier 1 fortress, but for larger fortresses, I would definitely suggest guns and a lot sturdier structure, as cannonfire will swiftly demolish a small tower like this! Good work with stonework, curvature and inside details. I approve.

A question for your all - I am considering arming my main vessel (a snow) with carronades, but I haven't really been able to find/make a design I like. It needs to be relatively basic, as I need to be able to build 8. Any good ideas/suggestions?

I completely agree with you, Sir Stig. The last column in the ship chart gives examples of what could be in that class, but really, most types could fit in several classes. The designation "Sloop" for instance is in itself a ambiguous term, as it can both refer to a class of vessel (something below the rating system, e.i. smaller than a frigate) or to the construction and rigging (e.i. fore and aft rig with the mast further forward and fewer jibs than a cutter). Thus, even a very small boat can be a sloop (class 0, basicly), as can something just short of a frigate (which would probably be class 6 or more!). If we limit ourselves to "sloop" as a designation for a type of rigging, it can be anything from a class 1 to a class 3 or perhaps even 4 (for the very largest one masted vessels). Therefore, a ships class should be decided based on its size and its statistics, not on the type of vessel.

I believe that is the first Corrington Shipping company to be established! I really like this house - as others have said, the different colours in the roof works really nice and those windows looks great. It has a simple design, without being boring. Perfect balance. However, I think mr. Coyle or the councelor will need to visit an IKEA! The idea of telling the story in log entries is brilliant! It gives a nice insight into his thoughts (and I am happy he finds Montoya a gentleman and a splendid chap! ) and can be kept in a suitably brief form without seeming superficial. If you will not mind, I might steal that. Erhm... I mean... Take inspiration from that!

Great little ship, Mike. I like the sails, and that little deckhouse and the hatches are great details. It really look like a fine little trader! It looks a little strange, that all her lines (more or less) are completely horisontal. I would suggest trying out a little more curvature on your next ship. The hull looks great, and appears to be completely brickbuilt? I would love to see some more pictures of how it was done. The same goes for the minifigs - would be nice to see how that interesting captain looks! Actually, she is ketch-rigged. Square sails on the mainmast (forward mast) and a smaller mizzen mast fore-and-aft rigged. I would estimate it as a 2 F or 2 T.

Nice vessels, Mr. Clarke! I really like how you tell your story with a series of pictures showing the action going on! Your ships all have some nice details, for instance the brick built cannon on your ship, or the ladders to the quarter deck of the pirate ships. Your posing and choice of figs is nice too. I agree with Gideon that something to represent the water would improve the presentation a bit. And it is really nice to see more of these smaller ships! A note, though. There is a 6 picture limit for challenge 2 B. Maybe put them under a spoiler tag, or take the extra pictures of the ships out, and post them in a reply to this thread instead, so your entry will be accepted for the challenge! Comparing these vessels to those already registered (see the index for an overview), I would say that the green one is a class 1 of some sort, and the pirate ship could be a class 2. (Probably not A, as it only has one gun, but maybe WR?) The blue one could probably be both 1 or 2. But of course, there is a pretty flexible creative license to the rating system.. So far, we have more or less established that the small prefab hulls (like the pirateship here) are class 2 (or 3 if they are long/large), while anything below that can be 1 or 2 depending on size and temperament of the builder. Class 0 is a simple rowboat/dingy/canoe, or a very small sailboat, so it does not take much to become class 1.

So, in short, you have already earned the 25 dubloons, Captain, as you already posted your sig fig. Consider the 25 DBs similar to the first free property and ship. It is the fortune and assets your character has as he embarks on a venture to the new world, not a reward for a build. And consequently, your character intro can be a freebuild.

Book II - Avalonia: Guild sign-up and Discussion
Bregir replied to Rogue Angel's topic in Guilds of Historica
Welcome to our new members! Due to exams, work, Christmas and preparing to go to Switzerland to study for a semester, I have been a bit absent. And as so many others, I too have gotten hold of the flu they call BoBS. (one wonder who that Bob is, though, and how it is his...). The EGS does seem a little confusing, but it seems to me it can run on any speed you like. A bit like task 4 (well, all of them really) here, where you can build up your own city/company/army/whatever. However, I am not gone, and have at least one ace up my sleeve for later this month! All hail our great Avalonia! :) -

I might very well be, as I am far from an expert on the official Lego vessels. In fact, the only one I ever owned is the corsair ship from lotr. I am currently working on a 8 gun (plus four chasers) sloop of war, which I expect to register with a rating of 4 (WR). That is with 3 middle hull sections as far as I remember. In short, I will not embarrass myself anymore, and instead, in great anticipation, await to see it! ;) However, the current classes only includes up to medium sized vessels, as frigates, for instance, are outside the current rating system, so a bomb ketch could be in the high end! :P- 897 replies

Cool build - the posing is excellent, and the simple landscape is very effective. That easter island type head is great too, and so is the story. Great work!

Really nice build - I have wanted to try my self at a glass blowing build, bu never got around to it! You have really executed it well! I approve! -
I love how everyday this moc is - you have shown a scene that is far from the economic, military or nautical scenes that are so typical here already. It has a very poetic atmosphere, and while it is small, I really like every bit of it. The waves are great, the sand looks very natural, and those flower stalks work very well. Further, the posing and story is nice. A very poetic little break to the rather hectic atmosphere in BoBS! Well done!

That destillery is brilliant and very fitting for the setting. I am loving the machine itself, and the roof is looking sweet - I wonder if that technique could be used for the outside roof too... There are so many nice details, like the small golden horn in the bottle to show he is pouring, and I chuckled when I saw the one guy who came for a free taste with two BUCKETS! I agree the water and docks looks a little plain compared to the wonderful details of the destillery itself. You have shown the life on the docks very well. I approve!

@AA: Sounds like she will be rather large - probably a tier 4 or 5 ship. :) If you want to use her for many different types of missions, the armed classes are probably not the right choice, as they have no cargo hold. But you can take your pick amongst the other classes, finding one that suits your need! :) @Ska: Nice map(s)! Will their be a post for Arlinsport, so we can register builds there? (I know you have many things to do - I am not trying to rush you :) )- 897 replies

Since you have built a ship, you can license it within the free license and join the MRCA already this month. :) You just need to register it through the ship web form.

A bomb ketch sounds really interesting - it's nice to see so many different types of vessels being designed here! And while it is not exactly a traditional warship, it would definitely fit the "armed" classification. It will most definitely come in handy in siege action, although it is not really the type for ship-to-ship combat. (But for game purposes, I doubt that will be taken into consideration ;) ) Depending on her side, I would guess that we are talking classes 3-5, which means you are looking at a license cost of anywhere between 250 for a class 3A to 450 for a class 5 heavy armed. Of course, this only applies if you wish to use it for the EGS, which I would personally encourage. :) You can see the different classes, their stats and costs here: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=118542 Will be looking forward to hearing and seeing more!- 897 replies

I agree - it only makes sense to form a flotilla, if they sail together. But if they do not have the same speed, maybe it works like with escorts, where the escort will follow the "escortee" as far as its speed will allow. So if the escortee have a speed of 3, but the escort only of 2, it will escort the tradeship for the part of the route between the first two ports. All in all, it makes sense to put similar ships together, or maybe let the faster ships slow down to wait for the rest. As for the question whether stats are added up, I suspect not. Maybe a speed roll is made for each of the predators/tradeships to see how many catches up, and how many escapes, and then that is the base for who joins the fight, but it is really up to Ska to answer this

Hi there, Legodragonman, and welcome amongst us! The cool thing about this project is that everyone is free to tell their own story within the framework set by the admins. I think the idea of a spy is a great one, so I suggest you create a sig fig and post his/her back story on these forums. While spying isn't part of the economic game system(EGS), it is definitely part of the time period. And it can be incorporated in the EGS, for instance by setting up a property that is a tavern (where a spy might pick up information from drunken sailors) or even a spy-ring headquarters. So if you want to be part of the EGS within your characters profession, that is definitely possible. It just takes a bit of creativity. I suspect this is a great place to learn new things - I have never been into building piratestuff before, so I am learning with every topic i read and every build I build. Good luck, and welcome here!- 780 replies

[ESL-Intro] Victor Servadac of the White Glove Order
Bregir replied to Sir Stig's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Interesting! About moving buildings and licenses: I think there might be some initial options, but generally, property is fixed to its location, and I would suggest finding the location (possibly waiting for the new islands to become available after challenge 1) before really starting to build up your city. You can apply for a charter (there are a few different kinds) and create your own city, where you are the mayor and take all important decisions, as well as approrpiating some income! -

Uuuh, a mysterious secret society! I am liking where this is going, and will be looking forward to following the adventures of the WGO! I really like the first build and the idea of an accident. And you have shown it really well with the fallen rubble. There is something off with the colours in the first picture, but other than that, your pictures seem nice to me. (Gideon will probably give you more input to this ) Great story, cool characters, and nice intro builds! Will you be opening the WGO to other members in the future, or will it remain a closed soceity?
