hm... yeah... hehe... did i say "off for a while"? 8-| :-$ if so, then why do i find myself lurking on these boards almost on a daily basis? :-$ 8-| ... oh god no... i'm ... I'm ... I'm addicted... :-X X-O X-D ok... so i'll be keeping a low profile for a while... only to show up when i see a chance to crush the Swedes and the Danes in a post or when the site has to be defended against a hostile take-over by fbtb :-X :-P and ... ah yes... also to write about Lego's best, greatest, most legendary theme: Space! 8-

well they could easily link Lucky Luke to the Western theme. Lucky Luke has already sold about 400 million albums, so popularity wouldn't be a problem... creating the Daltons as minifigs, however, is a different story... X-D don't know they'd to do the smurfs, really. it would be an instant success, no doubt, but lego doesn't seem to be all that practical for smurfs... tintin... no question there... everything tintin turns gold instantly spirou/robbedoes... hm... in terms of importance to the world of comics, it's as big as tintin, but it never was as successfull that it would convince Lego into getting a license and i'm not sure if a license would be very cheap. The name "Spirou" is so much bigger than the comic... For Flanders and Holland, if i were Lego chief number 1, i'd get a "Suske en Wiske" license. This series is by far the most succesfull comic series in the world, considering the limited geographic market. they're selling at least 100.000 copies of every comic for a population of about 20 million... The story goes they sold about a million every year, a decade ago... That is HUGE. 8-

BRICKSHELF is up again !!! HURRY HURRY HURRY!
snefroe replied to Brick Miner's topic in General LEGO Discussion
can i just take the opportunity here to thank you for your contribution to the Lego community in the passed couple of years? Brickshelf has always been a mainstay in the Lego world and i'm sad to see it go. :-X I can't really belief this is actually happening... :-X -
great review *sweet* maybe i will buy this one... but not this month... buying lego in billund has left me totally broke :-X :-$
-
ok then... i'll do that later on... but I will NOT touch that plastic residu! X-D
-
my guess it's less expensive and complicated to produce. they're also using these parts in other themes, so in the end, they're producing a smaller catalog of bricks but every part gets produced in larger quantities.

well a huge majority of the sources we have of the 8th-11th century are church records. at least in the historical community that kinda makes them suspecious, being reporter and victim at the same time; i'm not claiming that they did not raid and plunder, I'm stating that: 1) their reputation of only being scum, murderers and criminals who didn't do anything else but pillaging and raiding is popular belief more than scientific fact 2) again, i can only refer to historical findings: In europe, they had settlements and were integrated in our local society, we don't have indications that they got on land to just conquer a piece of land... 3) also, the word "country" is missplaced. the vikings landed in europe when the old empire of Carl the Great was on the verge of going under, it's the time frame of the early Middle Ages, the time frame of the legend of King Arthur. To speak of well structured countries getting attacked by an outside thread, is a bit too simple. The vikings added much to the confusion that was already there and got blamed for it for the most part... a real solid army of Carl the Great would have dealt with the vikings, unfortunately, they were quite busy fighting each other... what made the vikings stand out, was that they did not care much for the Christian authority, making churches monestaries,... easy targets...

ah... i see it's available after all... hm... so the danish price was quite high, think i paid about 105euro X-O still, i think it's the best set of the theme, so i won't complain

Problems with BS / Is BrickShelf no more ???
snefroe replied to john cleese's topic in General LEGO Discussion
well i think Flickr is even worse. you always get small pics and they take ages to load. actually, BS was ideal in the way that it gathered as many pics from as many different people as possible; that's what a community needs, IMO. sure, from a strategic point of view, it may have been fragile, but the main purpose of a site like that is to stimulate the community's work, to spread/share ideas. and if it's fragile, it's because of seriously crappy people messing it up... only because they enjoy other people's misery >:-( -
Lego's affiliation with six wheelers go back a long way. I think the first one was released in 1981, more than 25 years ago. This year, Lego added another one to the family, Mars Mission's "Rhino 1", as its title sounds... It's been a while since i've bought and opened a large box, so maybe this isn't a surprise to most of you, but the box does not open at the front, as with many larger sw boxes, but at the side. The two printed seals(or whatever people call them) have gone as well, being replaced by one larger print in the middle of side... the box also isn't as thick as a large sw box, like the sandcrawler... The general size is, however, still quite large. the back side shows the Mars Mission theme sets... eccept the Rhino! I guess it shows this set will be released as a TRU exclusive or something, only to show up in Legoland shops and maybe Lego shops... It's a shame really, because this is by far the best set of the theme. When you open the front cover, you see a larger picture picture of the Rhino. Obviously, it seems to be some sort of multifunctional truck. i think the basic function is to drive around and explore. For that it has a drilling device and six giant wheels. The set comes with two instruction books. i'm afraid to say they did not resolve the gray/black colors issue. Colorwise, the real thing does not look like the instruction book because of it... The Rhino looks really big because of the six giant wheels. I guess it's more or less the same size as M-tron's Magnetiser with the big difference between the two being that the wheels have been turned around, creating a unique wheel design for a Lego model the wheels look very cool, even though the first couple of wheels stand a bit closer to each other. Don't know why that is. hm... |-/ and they could have used a bit more body, but the design is pretty good. i know, "Armagheddon" isn't far away... |-/ The suspension of the wheels is a bit flimsy. sure, it allows the truck to move around in a more realistic way than the old sets, but it's not as flexible as some older sets, like sw's CTT. Nor do the wheels have much body. the black bars you see on top of the wheels are more "window dressing" then functional... The over all shape of the Rhino is kinda "bulky", it looks more like a beatle than a rhino, if you're asking me. It has three major sections, but i wouldn't call it a modular building though... The cockpit is the first section. It's spacious and detailed. The cockpit hangs down from a weird angle. it's attached to a large vertical technic brick that is part of the Rhino's main structure, so it's not a seperate spaceship, which is a shame... oh well... you can't have it all, i guess... ah yes... stickers all over the place, but they're cool. the mid section of the Rhino dominates the basic shape of the model. It's as if those two large white parts form a strong and thick shield, protecting whatever is inside from whatever is outsde. unfortunately, there is nothing inside. it's extra space needed to house the spaceship. That's really a shame; a command center of some kind could have given the rhino a bit more "panache". However, what's really great, is the way in which they fit together: one side has an orange 1x2 plate that fits in between two white 1x3 plates of the other side, creating yet another unique shape for a Lego model. But again, it's a shame they didn't do more with this section... X-O The third and last section is a platform for a space ship. The platform itself isn't really special. no details, no stickers,... it's just a skeleton to carry the spaceship, nothing more nothing less. No, your space ship doesn't fall off, even if you rotate the platform into a launch position, pushing the weight of the ship backwards. In fact, the position of the ship onto the platform is so solid, it's kinda difficult to imagine how this ship flies off. |-/ The ship on the other hand, is pretty cool. It's all sorts of things at the same time it seems. It transports two aliens, but also a small car that reminds me of the small sets of Spacepolice 2, blacktron 2,... the shuttle reminds me of a Star trek shuttle and i think it needs some modding, but i do think it looks pretty nice. sure, the cockpit is a bit too low, a pilot needs to lay down instead of sitting down and the dropping mechnism, if there is one at all isn't all that brilliant either... The main structure is a bit too technical for me. I prefer actual parts with studs, not these Lego technic bars and pins. the crew: ah yes, there's also this green plastic residu. think they are supposed to be the aliens... and there's also this weird alien craft, but i didn't bother to build that... *sad* GOOD: *wub* Great, innovative design, lots of potential, i even like the colors *sweet* Lots of playability it's a big, attractive model; i don't see any weak spots in the design that could compromise stability or structural integrity. NOT SO GOOD: |-/ too many technic parts, some sections on the model, like the gun and the drilling device are a bit to flimsy I'd say 7.5-8.5/10 Price: 750 Danish Crowns, about 105euro

someone got the rhino thing
snefroe replied to Grand Moff Viceroy's topic in General LEGO Discussion
i got it from the legoland shop in Billund i visited last week. They only had three of those and they were all gone in one day. I think it's an exclusive in some way though. the back side of the box shows all the sets of the Mars mission theme and the Rhino isn't part of that. Other displays at Billund also did not show the Rhino, so this may be a TRU exclusive or something like that. i'll post the pics directly on EB -
Problems with BS / Is BrickShelf no more ???
snefroe replied to john cleese's topic in General LEGO Discussion
yeah there were three topics on at some point last night and no one of the staff was online, so i decided to keep the one with the most posts/views open and close the rest. i did see you came online when i was already closing the first one X-D The title said "problems with BS", one that's large enough to have a discussion about the current problem on BS, even though the innitial problem mentioned in the thread was something different, but then H39 posted about the current problem in here, starting the discussion in this topic; Then i decided to close the other two. -

there seems to be something going on, however, we'll keep the discussion in the "problems with BS" topic, ok? so i'll close this one. Problems with BS

there seems to be something wrong with BS, but i'll close this thread if you don't mind... we already have two topics on the subject...

well i can only refer to archeological finds here: the weapons found in association with the Vikings at the continent were traced back to a dutch Viking settlement. Archeologists concluded that they made their weapons once they were settled on land, so the notion 'let's get our weapons on board, sail down south and expand our empire' just doesn't fit into our current interpretations of how the vikings operated here...
-
no it's not historically correct. It all started in the 19th century when archeologists did not use scientific methodology as they do today. Some guys found a viking grave, including all sorts of stuff, like a helmet and... horns... in a brief moment of inspiration one of those idiots not only seriously damaged the grave, he also added the horns to the helmets, stating that the horns were once part of the helmet. That image was so powerfull, it stayed in the mind of the collective. In reality, they were not. unfortunately, historians and archeologists made lots of these contextual interpretations that would become the basis for many myths. For instance, archealogists found a hole in king Tut's skull, so they emmediately concluded he was murdered by a head wound. That became the essence of an imaginative story about palace intriges, murders, political upheavel,... Current scientific methodology showed, not so long ago, that it was nonsense. There's also a myth that vikings took their ships to raid other people's countries. in reality, their swords were made in holland (the center being Venlo, I believe) when they were already based on solid land, nor did their ships carry dragon heads or whatever monster...

:-P i was thinking about your post as well! unfortunetaly, you were right! damn! :-X eh... can you also predict the 6 lottery numbers for next week? X-D what is, btw, Lego impulse? sounds like a differently scaled product again, perhaps duplo

they left the pyramids out of the final list? weird... a while back they said they would leave the pyramids in there whatever happens because of their importance to humanity... i did vote a few weeks back and i'm glad to see some of them in there, even though i can't remember all 7 i voted for. The temple of Angkor didn't make it, which is a shame, still, i'm sooooo happy the eiffeltower isn't in there. The french already have enough patriotism, no need to encourage that even more... oh well...
-
i don't like it at all, especially compared to the old AT-AT. the new one looks like the motorised proposal we saw a while back plus some extra system parts...

Izzy, I think that I need to clear some things up for you...
