a while back i spoke to one the emirs in the Middle East, the one from dubai, and he was very specific: they'll run out of oil in about 50 years. saudi arabia and Iraq still have decent supplies to last just a little bit longer, but most of it requires more investments. Seriously, it's not a coincidence that these Middle East statels like the UAE, Quatar,... are trying to get all sorts of other economic activities/events to their countries. They know the golden years of infite supply of oil is over. Sure there may be more natural gas left, but essentially, there's a problem too: we keep extracting resources from our planet, and our planet isn't able to replace them. That said, there's something far worse than global warming: it's the parasitic way in which humans want to live on this planet. Soon we'll run out of wood and natural environments needed to keep us alive. Not to mention the huge numbers of people living on this planet. I live in Flanders, which has about 6.5 million spoiled, rich consumers on 12.000 km2. If you want to mesure the impact of human behavior on an environment, this is place. We get all sorts of warnings these days: a warning to not do too much between 12.00-15.00 due to high concentrates of ozon; we get warnings about very fine dust coming from our combustion engines of cars; we get all sorts of warnings from medical centers claiming the latter causes more deaths than classic crimes or deseases...

i once wrote all my titles down in my sig, but i got rid of it after a while. what i do remember: i started with 1) "phylosofical pharaoh", "pharaoh" refers to Snefroe1 which is a reference to Snofroe, senefroe,... a very old pharaoh. the phylosifical thing was because i wrote long posts... 2) later on i got "the victim" because at some point i complained about the crappy titles i got :-| 3) "Rubber duck", this one was created by TT, because i'd suggested to jp to turn TT's title into "EB's village idiot" for giving us low quality jokes. the title only lasted for a day or so... 4) "Ranting machine" i got for yet again complaining about titles 5) now i have "buying bricks only by the kilos" or something... i'm sure i missed a few though...

actually, i'm impressed by this judge's actions. In many of these cases, rich people just get away with it, sometimes by paying a small or big fine/donation. With this judge you'd almost believe the judicial system in the US is auctually fair to every one... still, there's seems to be this new hype or attitude towards the rich kids of the world. Who would have thought 25 years ago that "karma karma cameleon - man Boy George" would be cleaning the streets of New York in 2005 or 6?

a few years back we had a prime minister called Jean-Luc Dehaene. at one point he went to the US, think to texas for an official visit. He and the entire press corps went to this entertainment hall where the people showed him a mechanic bull... So they asked him to give it a go, and he couldn't refuse obviously... so 5 minutes later he was on the thing, wearing that large cowboy hat, shouting "LET THE BEAST GO!!!" :-| a while before or after this event, he went to Canada where he and his wife visited an aquarium, including a show with seals. so when the animal went up to him, pretending to kiss him, he just couldn't resist... again... And ofcourse, we do have the star of youtube in our ranks as well: Michel Daerden. This guy is really hilarious... :-| Worst of all, 10000's of people voted for him during the elections of last week... :-| ah yes, then we have to other embarrassing stuff, like kabinets of ministers being used as meeting place for a plot to murder political ennemies; politicians ordering hitmen to kill specific people, you know, the usual... oh well, as if Mitt

i got mine because a few people on these boards are more powerfull than i am, and they feel the urge to change mine from time to time depending on the mood they're in :-X X-D The one i have now is in fact, one of the nicest i've had in a while... *sweet* ... but that won't last long, you'll see! :-X X-D it's a referrence to me buying bags filled with bricks whenever i go to a pab. Usually, most people only buy half a bags of bricks, i very often leave with 6-8...

honestly, what you're going through is basically the difference between what the Afol wants and what the kid wants... it's the same dilema that lego faces these days: children want playability, afols prefer display quality... good luck on the compromise :-X

this should go a lot higher though... still, two more days and these prices tend to go up in the last couple of minutes

well i do think that sw makes up the majority of the afol community, especially in the US, even though many have moved on to other themes, which is yet another contribution of the sw license. also, it's not impossible that many afols did not buy sw sets but got back in because of it. they recognized the new attraction of lego, the parts, designs, minifigs... they were attracted by the hype that sw created... even though they decided to pick up the old themes of interest, not sw... not sure if sw was the main thing here on eb, you'd have to ask jp, tt, and some other people here. i think the sw section/attention here on eb, compared to other sections, especially before the creation of the different forums, reflect the dominence of the theme in the afol community... well, i think they would and probably should if the system theme wouldn't sell/be profitable at all. Maybe they'd use a chunk of the bionicle profits to finance the system line, anyway, who'd care at that point? If bionicle takes 90% of the market or far more, then 90%+ of EB would be about bionicle. we'd probably not even care about system going down. Remember the Lego family? that was blown away by the minifig, consequently, lego droped the line all together, even though a generation had grown up with the those sets... let's face it, Lego 's in a very tough competition on different markets around the world. they may have a decent market share here in europe and they most defenitely have a good brand, but they're not the biggest toy producers in the world. they need to watch out for any threat what soever...

i can hardly be accused of being a fan of licenses. still, Star wars is by far the biggest line of Lego in the last 10 years. It may not have sold in massive numbers year after year, but it surely saved the company from getting taken over by a bigger player on the market when Lego was in financial trouble. it cannot be stressed enough that sw brought in an entirely new group of fans, the afols. Sure, the number of people may be fairly small compared to the traditional market, but it's a financially powerfull group, not to mention the fact that most of the internet activity (like basically all the websites) is/was set up by Afols... on the other hand, many other licenses are crap. Frst, many sets are playability sets, not really in the interest of afols; they're short lived and very often don't seem to go anywhere, like batman and spiderman. How can you expect people to start collecting batman, if the collection will never ever reach more than 8-10 sets? Consequently, there's no fanbase, just the casual consumer who likes batman and buys a set or two. also, they're very expensive compared to normal lego sets and they're making Lego dependent on a partner. They do not decide when sets are getting released, probably do not decide what sets to build,... still, kids are far more demanding then ever before. For instance, we used to build an xwing in the 80s with lego parts. it didn't look like the real thing at all, we just did the best we could... Nowadays, kids want the real thing, the wouldn't be happy with the xwing we made, they'd want something that looks waaaaay better than that. sure Lego can easily do that, but probably not without risking a lawsuit for violating copyrights, the way-out would be to get a license... you cannot ignore the huge impact from media/hollywood culture on kids. they don't create barriers in the way they see things. after having seen POTC they'll go straight to their Lego box, they'll pick up a minifig which, in their mind, is Sparrow, and they will very often just replay the film, maybe with variations, but in the end, they'll keep the main characters. as with the xwing example, they'll not be happy with a classic smiling head or a substitute, they'll want a Jack sparrow head. Lego has accepted that a substitute for batman would have been nonsense, so they just went after the license... They did not get the license for POTC, so they did not create a POTC theme... Sure playmo is doing well, but they are in a different market anyway. first of all, Playmo sells waaaay better than Lego and is mainly based in Europe. They can afford to not focussing on US culture/market... second, they never bothered about themeparks, spin offs, clothing,... they're just producing traditional playmo toys, making costs extremely low, so they don't need a profit the size of Lego's.

Buying Pirate LEGO - where to buy, advice, tips and questions
snefroe replied to Mr. Smee's topic in LEGO Pirates
well even though they are great ships, i'd doubt you'll get more than 100 euro, let's say 150 dollars. First of all, it's not a set, but a moc. people don't pay all that much for mocs of others. I also don't see figs, cannons, ... the parts that make proposals interesting. Collectors wouldn't be interested in this moc, because it's not an official set, and usually it's that small group of fanatics who are willing to pay lots of money. Maybe you should put them on ebay, add a minimum reserve and see what comes of it. i don't think 250 is realistic, though. if you're lucky, you get two or more kids bidding on your offer, pushing it to 250... good luck *sweet*- 502 replies
