Arthur quickly uses the Ethertech Spyglass to search for spies and eavesdroppers in the area before passing the device to Skrall, also passing back the two Phoenix Incenses Skrall had loaned him. He takes a quick look through the book the Weather Mage had just given him. Hmm...I wonder... he looks to Miirym, still perched on Lady Shanxian's shoulder with all the arrogant regality as if she had been crowned ruler of Xu instead of the new Council. She's not ready for this, he sighs to himself. She's caught up in the glory of battle, neglecting the spiritual side of her training. Does she even hear me, I wonder? Miirym makes no sign to indicate she was listening to the Dragoon, preening her scaly wings lavishly without any care in the world. Her aloofness was not entirely genuine, however, and she begins to cough and gag when she inadvertently nips a few strands of Shanxian's hair instead of her own wing. Arthur smiles a little. Still a child, he reminds himself, even if Dragons do age differently from us. Still a child...and still unready for battle. He had a choice to make when he got back to the Hall--or, perhaps, when he visited Number 14, Heron Street... Yes. It's time. He pockets the book, calls Miirym--who, thankfully, responds this time--and turns his attention back to the others. "What, we're not taking the Azure Ark home?" Arthur jokes with a chuckle. "Home does indeed sound like a good idea. You've answered nearly all of my concerns, Lady Shanxian, and for that I am grateful. While perhaps we could have done more to spare the innocent, I think that ultimately our actions here today will prove to be for the best." "<I would have been happier with more shiny objects. Like an automaton. Or twelve.>" "Hush, Miirym. Show some humility." "<'Hush, Miirym.' Is that all you say?>" "Miirym. We are guardians of the world, not its conquerors. We are pieces in a larger game, not the players commanding the board. Perhaps when we return to Eubric, to the day-to-day life of the city, you will be reminded of how small we actually are." "<Small pieces that have a big impact on the game.> "Yes. We are. But think for a moment about what that means." Miirym falls silent for a moment, before spreading her wings and taking to the skies--hopefully, Arthur thinks, just returning to the Bounty on her own. But I will grant her that freedom. She needs the space. He sighs and continues forward with the rest of his party.

Ooh, nice, another Quest akin to Green and Gone, I like! (Green and Gone was probably my favorite of Flare's two Quests. )

Let's not forget Arthur--I plan to have him follow up on the letter he got from Valentine last year once he gets home from Xu. In fact, considering that Arthur wouldn't exist without the Zeigfrieds, I don't think I'd be too unjustified in saying that wizard House is best pony House. But yes, the Zeigfrieds are in sore need of some more development.

Bluurgh. I hate Stunned. It's so freaking obnoxious to keep track of.

The Dragoon's Dragon once again interfered in his attack, smashing shelves and scattering shards and splinters spectacularly for massive injuries against the remaining foes. The Monk, too, landed a solid blow, weakened only by the Phalanx, as the Druid decided to heal herself after poking her poisoned staff past his defenses. One way or another, this would all be over within the next few Rounds. Only two enemies and four counters stood against the party! THE BATTLE CONTINUED! The Enemies: Golem Lieutenant Huxley *Immune to Weakened, Blinded, Fragile, and Jinxed* *Back Row* *Ignores Row* *Deals Stunned* *Assistance* *Poisoned by 75* *Bleeding by 15* *Reinforced* *Lucky* *Hastened* *Blessed* *Phalanx (12 Rounds)* Type: Humanoid Level: 54 Health: 221/710 Defense: 25 50 Special: Phalanx - The Skirmisher crouches behind his shield in close formation with the rest of his party, halving his and their damage taken during the next three Rounds. I think if a House were to die, it would probably be the Bonapartes. Unlike, say, the Ji Pei with Hybros or the Guild of Invision with Guts, we haven't really seen them reach out to Heroes and form personal bonds (I mean, hell, the only player who's actively shown interest in Cannoneer just perma-killed her character, and I highly doubt any new contenders will be coming along soon), nor have they been portrayed in a particularly positive light. They always seem to be the first House people point to when the issue of "Houses are evil and cruel to the common people" comes up (i.e. in the Wolfgang plot). Thus, it would make sense for them to be the first target of the Wolfgang, which I think is what we're seeing in 119. What I expect to see in the wake of such an even, no matter which side Heroica ends up on, however, is the dark side of their choice; if the Heroes choose to preserve the Bonies, I expect them to come down hard on the city, launching a bloody and near-dictatorial purge of as many of their detractors as humanly possible, whereas if they kill the House off I'd expect to see crime and piracy shoot up drastically in Uland and the surrounding areas. As far as the fate of the Bonapartes go, no matter what happens--win, lose, or status quo--the city loses.

Yick. So glad I have Overkill gold available to help smooth out the loot distribution--it'd be much harder to keep the overall totals fair otherwise. For clarity's sake: not complaining about the loot! I'm complaining about how bad I am at dividing it.

OOC: I don't think the Chaotic Bomb was supposed to drop. Was it by any chance meant to be one of the other artifacts...? Loot Division: Skrall - Grating Stone (from Battle Flow), Smoke Bomb (from Battle Flow), Composite Bow, 30 Gold Atramor - Silver katana Arthur - Blue Hand Shield Miirym perches haughtily upon Lady Shanxian's shoulder, as if daring Arthur to make her return to his side. That's...not a good sign. What sort of example must I be setting for her? He sighs. "Many sacrifices have been made to bring about this end. Perhaps not all of them were necessary. But in the end, it would go against everything I hope the new Xu will stand for not to face up to the consequences of our actions. I am still with you at least, for good or for ill." OOC: WBD, Arthur gets a flat 1000 out of the Overkill, you and Pie get 1044 each. If either of you are disappointed with the loot, let me know and I'll try to come up with a fair solution.

You should poke the Iron Builder organizers, convince them to host an Iron Builder Heroica RPG Edition.

"Hang in there, Skrall! Atramor, think you can heal him up?" Arthur mentally berates himself for not using a more immediately useful weapon. Battle Order: Arthur Atramor Skrall Skrall
-
More, actually--Skrall has killed every single one of the enemies so far. Keep in mind, though, it's not all his--we're splitting it evenly across the party. Level-Up Mushrooms have been sold for 325+ Gold in the past, though that was before the Fields were a source of them. Still, there's not a huge market for them even at the higher levels--most of the people currently in that range have Medals of Glory already, and those that aren't are still at a level where it's still somewhat bearable to take life one battle at a time. I'm thinking it should probably be a power thing as well. As it stands, the current max damage a Decamon Drafter can put out with their summon is 100, IF the elemental matchup is right; even as a Skirmisher, I was putting out roughly half that amount with an unimbued weapon, and I had the option of drinking a Mead to double the output if I wanted to as well. Something to keep in mind is that Decamon Drafter has a flat scaling curve; no matter what, your summon damage is limited to the level of your card (which itself has a set-in-stone max of 10) multiplied by the summon roll. A DD at 50 won't be dealing much more summon damage than a DD at 30, so it won't hurt to let the summon roll multipliers be a little high for Level 30 (since they'll start getting matched and outmatched by other summoning classes later on at Levels 40-50 and beyond).

I'd prefer it to be at a time other than Grogmas; I've always really enjoyed the gifting events for the sense of community camaraderie surrounding them, whereas this year we ended up with a competition (and moreover a competition in which most of the participants were quickly eliminated). Maybe sometime in Spring or Summer?
-
Actually, Level-Up Mushrooms already have a fixed marketable value of ~250 Gold, as defined by the Fields of Glory (one Glory Point is roughly analogous to 10 Gold, based on the 500 Gold reward for 50 GP). It's not absolute, of course--I'd argue that they're a little closer to 200 even, maybe even less, since they aren't nearly as useful at lower levels (they're basically not worth using prior to Level 20 unless you're exactly Level 14 or Level 14.5 at the end of a Quest, and even at the Level 20-29 range it's an enormous expense for what you get out of it). I'd actually argue that experience-boosters like the Medal of Glory and Trial Brew and Level-Up Mushrooms are actively detrimental to players prior to roughly the Expert Class level; by using experience boosts to shoot up through the early levels, you deny yourself valuable real-world experience of compensating for your relative weakness, managing a limited budget, and generally learning the ins and outs of the Heroica system so you can play effectively as the Quests you play in become progressively more complex. I'd actually argue that, despite what the Levels say, Actaeon and Kiray are more skilled players than Lind, because they've been through more battles, more varied battles (of all the things the Fields are good for, teaching the nuances of the Heroica mechanics are not one of them), and battles more suited to both character and player skill level. (No offense to Lind, of course--you're not a bad player, you just still have a whole lot to learn, some of which Act and Kiray have already learned despite being of lower Level.) TL;DR, prior to Expert Class level, experience-boosters do players a disservice by desynchronizing player experience and character experience--not to mention all the Medal of Glory users who've found themselves unable to take Veteran Classes at Level 40 and above due to not having successfully completed enough Quests to earn the class. To be clear: I'm not saying we should do anything to restrict or discourage less-experienced players from using experience boosts, I'm saying these players should think twice before actively pursuing them.

Make them write out the full text of the fictional books on the wiki for bonus gold and experience. ...I say that as a joke, but actually that's not a half-bad idea if implemented with care...

"Say, Atramor, why don't you join me against the Jun-Chi, if it's still Stunned? You'd hit hard against it, and if we could halve its health a couple times I'm pretty sure you could get another card out of it."

No. Being a Mary Sue is a bad thing. I've been trying for years to try and tone all of Arthur's excess baggage down (without outright retconning too much) so as to improve him, but I still have a long ways to go. (Hell, it's one of the reasons I had him get fired from the Town Watch--yes, he's had a significant impact on the Wolfgang storyline, and I'll continue to leverage his experiences with his time in the Watch, but it shouldn't be about him, which being part of the Watch came dangerously close to becoming at a couple of points.) A character's special abilities need to be earned through good writing, not just tacked on so as to justify trying to take over a QM's storyline, which unfortunately I've tried more than once in the past. And if you need an example of how badly written all of my pre-66 stuff was... When the most oblivious character in the game (not player, mind you, just the character) recognizes how ridiculous your superfluous self-serving roleplaying bit was, you know you've got a problem. I, unfortunately, failed to recognize this, and ended up sticking my nose unnecessarily into the Progg/Regret storyline as a result. (Not that Arthur interacting with The Regret or Roni's inclusion in 48 were bad things per se, but Endgame and I both definitely overblew them and gave Arthur's Mary Sue storyline way too much influence over a Quest he wasn't even on. )

I'd say that a Level-Up Mushroom grants you a full Level's worth of experience for the Level you were at when you ate it; thus, a LUM eaten at Levels 1-9 gives 1 battle's experience, a LUM eaten at 10-19 gives 2 battles' experience (so someone at 19.5 becomes Level 20.33), a LUM eaten at 20-29 gives 3 battles' experience (so 29.33 becomes 30.25 or at 29.66 becomes 30.5), a LUM eaten at 30-39 gives 4 battles' experience (39.25 -> 40.2, 39.5 -> 40.4, 39.75 -> 40.6), and a LUM eaten at 40+ gives 5 battles' experience (but at that point the scaling stops, so it's not an issue anymore).

Was going through my (utterly cringe-worthy) early posts while attempting to write a cohesive biography of Arthur that makes him seem like less of a Mary Sue, when I came across this fantastic typo: In other news...it's really, really hard to try to undo some of the Mary Sue-ism in Arthur's backstory. It's downright depressing, actually. Also, WOW I sucked at writing Caroline. Like, seriously, I don't even think the "still a better love story than Twilight" meme applies here.

OOC: Unfortunately, I believe Skrall's attack would have healed the Jun-Chi to maximum health, since his bow is also Fire- and Wind-elemental. "Miirym!" Arthur scowls at the willful reptile, but the expression is hidden as usual by his concealing helmet. "Atramor, think you can finish off Chie? I'd like to put Skrall on Bangu next." Arthur switches to his Clockwork Lance from the Back Row, realizing that a Slow here could mean the difference between life and death for the party. Battle Order: Arthur Atramor Skrall Skrall
