I think too much, Arthur thinks to himself. "Oh! No, that's...that's really not necessary. We're all friends of the family--well, Althior and Alexis are, I'm just family--and we're only here to help Lilly. No need to worry!"

Heroica RPG - Expert Job Class Discussion
Flipz replied to LEGOman273's topic in The Heroica Archive
I'd add to the gladiating section that the bonuses and penalties override the Hero's immunities. I like Glory as is, it's a good fit for the whole Furious thing. Acted Counter is okay, but the name in general needs work, and the name should also have the word Furious in there as well. I also wouldn't mind it getting replaced by Dirty Fighting, but then again I do like the uniqueness of what you have now. -
Have to admit, though, it sort of makes sense--if you think of space and time like a rug, if you fold and stretch it in one place, it increases the strain on it in another, making it easier to tear a hole in it at that spot. And actually, that's kind of scary--presumably, the bag of holding plane gets expanded every time a new person gets a Bag of Holding, which would be at least every time a new Hero joins Heroica; thus, every new Hero brings the archdemons of Zoot one step closer to unleashing the hordes of demons in the Void upon Olegaia. Or, you know, I'm just making up technobabble as I go, take your pick.

Heroica RPG - Expert Job Class Discussion

I actually like Gladiator, but each of the weapon effects should also come with a disadvantage (i.e. have the Greatsword grant Lucky due to its impressive and intimidating size, but also Slowed due to its heft; similarly, you could have the Longsword grant Encouraged due to its ease of use but Fragile due to difficulty parrying [or whatever reason, I'm not terribly educated on the advantages and disadvantages of medieval weaponry, that's more Brickdoctor's department ]; maybe have the Lance grant Nimble for the reasons you gave, but also Weakened due to the focus on its defensive use). Do that, and maybe up the HP bonus a little (the average is floating around 11.66 at the moment, so maybe give it 5-6 health since the positive effects are a pretty big advantage), and I think it could work well. -
As someone who spent nearly 5 years in Japan and visited more than a few castles there, I have to say, this is spot-on. Excellent attention to detail, and the use of SNOT one the walls is brilliant--though I have to say, those Europeans must bet absolutely atrocious fighters to be losing to invading troops; every last detail of the Japanese castles, from the slope of the staircases to the width of each individual step, is meticulously designed to make defense easy for the defenders while making every inch gained a true struggle for the invaders. Having done my fair share of running up and down the steps, I can definitely attest that the disadvantage the invaders are facing is most intense. Agreed, even a scaled-down Architecture line version of Himeji Castle would be amazing.

Did...did I just find a logical reason for Arthur's Mary Sue backstory tribe to be involved with both dimension-hopping and Chaos?!
-
Arthur is a little off-put, but manages to maintain his composure. "Err--right. Well, to make a long story--no, wait, maybe I should start from the beginning. You know how space is three-dimensional?" The Weather Mage draws an axis for each dimension in the air. "Well, it's actually possible, with a knowledge of ley lines and a hefty Ether supply, to--" he stops himself, clearly having lost at least a few members of his audience. He sighs at himself. "Sorry. Guess I'm not the best teacher. Basically, through a lot of complex effort, you can fold space--that's the three-dimensional space in which everything exists--back upon itself, provided you put the extra space in a closed container, with a predefined doorway between it and the rest of reality. The downside being, the more people do that, the easier it is for demons and chaomancers to rip holes in reality through to the Void, but, well, no one really seems to care about that part." Arthur shrugs. "I may know more about this kind of stuff than is really healthy, but whatever." "I suppose I could cast the spell for you if you'd like, but I'd be happy to try and teach you what I know about Scroll-casting if you prefer to cast it yourself."

Heroica RPG - Quest #118: The Tale of the Stolen Spirits
Flipz replied to Flipz's topic in The Heroica Archive
QM Note: I've spoken with the dice. They've agreed to give you better rolls, but only if they're in extremely strange edge cases that break the QM's brain. Round 10 of the Sanctuary Skirmish >Bartholomew Docken (Unlucky Horseshoe) vs. Golem Ranger Mob - SHIELD Hit (Golem Ranger Mob: 13+49=62/2=31 damage + Jinxed + Asleep removed; Docken: Unlucky Horseshoe must be retrieved) >Bartholomew Docken (Darksteel Crossbow) vs. Golem Ranger Mob - Hit (Golem Ranger Mob: 10+49=59/2=29 damage + Blinded) Hybros (Darkness) vs. Golem Ranger Mob - Damage (Hybros: no effect, Stunned removed) Hybros (Darkness) vs. Golem Ranger Mob - Damage (Hybros: no damage, Blind) Thormanil Nihai (Shishkebab) vs. Golem Ranger Mob - Jump Hit (Thormanil: Avoiding all action) Arx vs. Small Golem Mob - SHIELD SHIELD (Dragon's Wrath: Fury From Above - Small Golem Mob: 4, no dodge (16*3=48+44+1=93*2/2=93-2=91 (KO!); Golem Skirmisher Mob: 16*3=48+44+1=93*2/2/2=46-40=6 damage) + Small Golem Mob Golem Skirmisher Mob: 44*2/2=44-40=4 Ice-elemental damage; Civilian Golem Defender Mob: 44*2/2=44-20=24 Ice-elemental damage; Golem Ranger Mob: 44*2/2=44 Ice-elemental damage)) >Ellaria Arbour (Ignis Fatuus) vs. Golem Alchemist Mob - Critical Hit (Golem Alchemist Mob: 13*2=26+31=57/2/2=14 damage + Poisoned 15) Civilian Golem Defender Mob vs. Bartholomew Docken: Bottle Rocket - (2, Confused! 8, Lightning Bomb, 5 Lightning-elemental damage to enemy party) Golem Skirmisher Mob vs. Hybros: (no damage, Blind) Golem Scholar vs. Thormanil Nihai Arx Civilian Golem Defender Mob: -16 (poison) Golem Skirmisher Mob: -1 (poison), -5 Bleeding Golem Ranger Mob: -1 (poison) Golem Scholar: -1 (poison), -10 (bleeding) The Warden led the party in barraging the Rangers, Blinding and Jinxing them into submission. The Monk couldn't seem to manifest his mojo, but the Dragoon and his Dragon manifested enough mojo for multitudes of men. Spearing his lance through the last Small Golem, he managed to pin the feet of one of the Skirmishers, quickly turning the forward momentum into vertical via using his lance to pole-vault into the air. The Dragon blasted the survivors with ice, even crystallizing some skin along one Ranger's spine; seeing this, the Dragoon pounced off the wall, prepared to pierce the Rangers with a shattering strike. While the Alchemists were distracted by the draconic damage, the Druid crept up and clobbered one over the back of the head. The Pumpkin protection faded, but it had been well worth it. THE BATTLE CONTINUED! The Enemies: Golem Alchemist Mob *Immune to Sealed, Poisoned, and Asleep* *Mob 5* *Lucky* Type: Humanoid Level: 25 (5*5) Health: 1035/1100 (220*5) Special I: Instant Items - The Golem Alchemist Mob uses an item from their drops, then attacks the target with strength equal to their Level. If the Golem Alchemist has no items remaining in their drops, Mixture is used instead. Used in place of Damage rolls and Free Hits. Special II: Mixture - The Golem Alchemist Mob mixes random ingredients together and creates surprising new items. The Golem Alchemist Mob adds one item to their drops. Drops: 6x random Alchemist items (see Alchemist "Mixture" rules page) Civilian Golem Defender Mob *Immune to Lightning, Enamored, Slowed, Blinded, Stunned, Sealed, and Asleep* *Mob 5* *Lucky* *Poisoned by 16* Type: Humanoid Level: 85 (15*5) Health: 689/800 (160*5) Defense: 20 (4*5) Special I: Bottle Rocket - The Sand Green Male Golem in the mob launches a random effect-inducing bomb (see Dain Almight's shop in The Marketplace) at the party. Used in place of Damage rolls and Free Hits. Special II: Butchery - The Golem Butcher in the mob slashes fiercely, doing half normal damage but inflicting Bleeding 5. Used in place of Damage rolls and Free Hits. Special III: Bottle Rocket Barrage - The Male Golem launches three random effect-inducing bombs (see Dain Almight's shop in The Marketplace) at the party. Special IV: Stonewall - The Female Golems in the mob push the other golems to the Back Row for one Round. Any damage or negative effects directed at the other golems during that Round is instead redirected to the Civilian Golem Defender Mob. Specials determined by a separate roll. If Special Damage is rolled against him again while his Phalanx is in effect, his Phalanx is extended by another three Rounds. Drops (varies by roll, rolled twice from list): 1-2: Spear (WP:6), Pugilist's Gloves 3-4: 2x Mead, 2x Smelling Salts 5-6: 30 gold Note: The Golem Skirmisher mob attacks with throwing weapons; after two rolls of Damage or two Free Hits, the Golem Skirmisher Mob will no longer ignore row. Golem Ranger Mob *Back row* *Ranged (ignores row)* *Mob 3* *Assisted by Golem Skirmisher Mob* *Blinded (3 Rounds)* *Lucky* *Poisoned by 1* *Jinxed* Type: Humanoid Level: 96 (32*3) 192 Health: 495/684 (228*3) Special: Homing Arrows – Causes 32 damage to all opponents regardless of row. Drops (varies by roll, rolled 3 times from list): 1-2: Composite Bow (WP:11, ignores defense, bow) 3-4: Quiver of Homing Arrows (Rolls of AIM become HIT; can only be used with a bow or a crossbow; backwear) 5-6: 10 gold Golem Scholar *Immune to Encouraged* *Permanently Transcended* *Back Row* *Ranged (Ignores Row)* *Deals Bleeding-5* *Lucky* *Poisoned by 1* *Bleeding by 10* Type: Humanoid Level: 36 Health: 371/450 Ether: 68/68 Special: Lecture - The Golem Scholar gives the target a proper teaching, using all the scrolls from his inventory and drops at the same time, each with a 2/3 chance of success. Scrolls granting negative effects are directed to the target, while those granting positive effects are aimed at himself. The Golem Scholar can only use as many scrolls as his remaining Ether allows, starting from the one listed first in his inventory. Scrolls that grant pre-existing effects or ones the target is immune to are not used. Inventory (not dropped): Scroll of Haste (Grants the target the Hastened-effect for one battle. Costs 10 Ether.), Scroll of Slowness (50/50 chance to inflict Slowed on the target at the cost of 10 ether.), Drops: The Scholar's Story (journal, Quest Item), 3x Grand Tonic, 1-2: Scroll of Fire Armor (½ chance to conjure a layer of fiery armor over the target, giving them a ½ chance to deal the Burned by 10 when hit by Damage or Special Damage; costs 5 Ether) 3-4: Scroll of Minor Dispel (Enables the user to remove one negative effect from the target. Each casting has a 50/50 chance of success and costs 5 Ether.) 5-6: Borrowed Butcher's Cleaver (WP:3, throwing weapon, inflicts Bleeding-5) Note: The Golem Scholar attacks with a throwing weapon; after one roll of Damage or one Free Hit, he will move to the front row and retrieve his throwing weapon on the next Free Hit or roll of Damage. If he drops below half health, the Golem Scholar will no longer attempt to retrieve his throwing weapon, but will instead remain in the Back Row and focus exclusively on casting his scrolls; one random scroll will be chosen, and if the scroll inflicts a positive effect a random ally will be chosen as its target. Each scroll reading has a 2/3 chance of success. If the Golem Scholar drops below 10 Ether, he will drink a Grand Tonic from his drops instead of attacking to replenish his reserve. QM Note: The Mobs count as one target but are made up of individual members. As each member of the Mob is killed its stats lower, also until the Standing Party #>Mob # the Mob always gets a free hit. In the case of the Civilian Golem Defender Mob, its various Specials are disabled and replaced with generic Damage rolls when the golem that would administer each Special is dead. Golems in a mob are killed from left to right of their individual portraits. The rest of the party tries to bash the Skirmishers a bit, but their heavy armor renders their blows all but null. The Druid tries to follow up on their previous successes against the Alchemists, but her luck fails her. Fortunately, it still prevents the survivors from using their new mixture. The Confused civilians manage to strike the Scholar instead of their target. The Pumpkin protection would soon fade. If the party was going to deliver a critical strike, it would have to be now. "Hello, Lilly, my name is Arthur Justus Regulus VII. I don't know if Valentine has spread word through the family yet, but..." Arthur pauses, a little worried about his fellow party members' reactions. "I'm Noel's half-brother." No going back now, he thinks to himself. He braces himself for a snarky comment from Miirym, but it doesn't come. Not sure if I'm relieved...or worried, he admits to himself. His insides twist themselves a little more, but the Weather Mage forces himself to remain calm. He distracts himself by introducing the others. "Anyway, you probably already know Althior, and our Assassin friend is Alexis Fenral. Oh, and the floating...blue aura thingy is...wait, where is Finnegan? Althior?" "Oh, ye of little faith. A Scroll of Minimizing would shrink us right down to size, if we had one." "It's probably bigger on the inside," Arthur suggests, "or it might open onto its own demiplane. The spacial dynamics are a bit complex, but it's workable. How do you think our equipment bags work?" He chuckles at Althior's nervousness. "Either way, it's the most logical explanation for how something could be in the dollhouse bothering Lilly without setting off our family's protective wards." Arthur turns back to Lilly. "I think I second Althior's questions. Well, the first two, anyway. The answer to the third's fairly obvious."

Hey, Ray of Frost has a 60-foot range and the edge of the roof was 65 feet away from the enemy I had to slow before he could kill our only healer; how was I supposed to not jump off the roof while blasting an icy beam at it? (For the record, I critted the attack roll, killing the enemy, and then critical failed the athletics check to land safely. The party reaction was just about what you'd expect. )

Oh gods. I once came within one saving throw of death just by trying to jump from the roof of a one-story shack to the ground because of those athletics checks.

Heroica RPG - Quest #118: The Tale of the Stolen Spirits
Flipz replied to Flipz's topic in The Heroica Archive
QM Note: Using Docken's last specified action, since no others were given for him. Missed that Hybros suggested a target for Docken. I'll go with that, then. Round 7 of the Sanctuary Skirmish Hybros throws Pumpkin Bomb - (All enemies: stunned, poisoned-by-1, asleep, blinded, sealed, and confused) Bartholomew Docken (Darksteel Crossbow) vs. Golem Alchemist Mob - SHIELD SHIELD (Aura - Docken: Aura) Bartholomew Docken (Darksteel Crossbow) vs. Golem Alchemist Mob - Damage SHIELD (Docken: no deflection, no damage (asleep) ) Thormanil Nihai (Shishkebab) vs. Golem Alchemist Mob - Hit SHIELD (Golem Alchemist Mob: 16+44+1=61*2/2=61+61=122 damage + Asleep removed) Arx vs. Small Golem Mob - Breath Damage (Arx Docken: no damage (asleep) ) Hybros uses Health Core on Thormanil - (Thormanil: full health restored, Bleeding removed) >Ellaria Arbour (Ignis Fatuus) vs. Golem Alchemist Mob - Hit (Golem Alchemist Mob: 13+31=44/2=22 damage + Poison 15) Golem Alchemist Mob + Civilian Golem Defender Mob + Golem Skirmisher Mob + Golem Ranger Mob + Golem Scholar Mob vs. Bartholomew Docken: 0 (no effect, stunned removed)+Butchery+0 (no damage, Asleep)+0(no damage, Asleep)+0 (no damage, Asleep)= Butchery - 85/2/2/2=10-23=0 damage + Bleeding 5 Civilian Golem Defender Mob: -15 (poison) Docken: -10 (Bleeding) Under Pumpkin protection, the party pummels the Alchemists, though not quite enough to kill the first one. The Civilian Golem Defenders carve up the Warden, but his Aura sustains him from the brutal bleeding. Everyone else remains both Stunned and Asleep. THE BATTLE CONTINUED! The Enemies: Golem Alchemist Mob *Immune to Sealed, Poisoned, and Asleep* *Mob 6* *Blinded (3 Rounds)* *Lucky* Type: Humanoid Level: 30 (5*6) Health: 1176/1320 (220*6) Special I: Instant Items - The Golem Alchemist Mob uses an item from their drops, then attacks the target with strength equal to their Level. Drops (varies by roll): 1: Jill's Hair Clip (wearer is immune to Lightning and Enamored; accessory, suitable for females), Sandman's Parasol (Protects from asleep- and fast asleep –effects; accessory.), 2-3: Jeff's Goggles (Protects from blind-effect; accessory.), 1-6 random bombs (amount and type varies by roll) 4-5: 120 gold, Emergency Essence, Phoenix Essence 6: 2x Chicken Drumstick Small Golem Mob *Nimble* *Deals Stunned and Slowed* *Mob 1* *Lucky* *Poisoned by 1* *Blinded (3 Rounds)* *Sealed (3 Rounds)* *Stunned* *Asleep (3 Rounds)* Type: Humanoid Level: 9 (9*1) Health: 100/100 (100*1) Defense: 2 (2*1) Special: Rock & Roll - The Small Golem Mob rolls out of reach, avoiding all action for the rest of the Round. "'Quiet! Miss Lilly waits for you upstairs. Use the vines to climb up.' Looks like you're right about the window, Alexis." Arthur says nothing about Miirym. If she thinks she can do any better on her own, then...then good riddance! His conscious thoughts did nothing to relieve the twisting, gnawing sensation deep within him, however. Perhaps as a distraction, Arthur quickly climbs the vines after Alexis.

I...suppose that makes sense, yes. I do think that the text of the existing traits should be added to the description page for each summon, as they would then serve as both a convenient reference and a useful inspiration for roleplaying.

Maybe the classes need different job traits, then? It makes total sense for Evokers to be able to summon spirits outside of battle, but it would make no sense to force them to give up either Basic Class trait they get. Similar deal goes for Necromancers commanding their undead. For clarity, I'm suggesting that Decamon Drafter get a different job trait, with the summoning skill being implied. Ninjas! Ninjas everywhere!!

Wow, what a 7900th post. ...aaand ninja'd on the auto merge.

Necromancer has a trait that allows them to communicate with the spirits of the dead, I figure that's close enough. With regards to Evoker, I think that falls under the Spellcasting trait, with the caveat that Evokers can use the trait to summon spirits because that's what they do in battle. (I also could have sworn it was mentioned on the spirit summoning page at one point, but it's not there now. ) Really though, what's done is done, and Sandy made his ruling for his Quest--which is how it should be. It's up to each QM to interpret what is inappropriate roleplay for their own Quest. If we start trying to add a bunch of hard - and - fast rules to roleplaying, next thing you know we'll have a full-on skill tree with dice rolls against DC for skill checks. Heroica has always benefited from its openness and it's players' willingness to make compromises. While I could have easily limited Miirym's actions, Sandy's discomfort seemed to imply that her inclusion in this Quest could have been problematic, so rather than unnecessarily inconvenience my QM, I chose to send her away for a while--and obviously, once I'm back in the Hall, it's back to Dragoon for good (or not, if I decide I like playing Weather Mage better). No harm, no foul.

Miirym stares down at the three Heroes, standing in silence, and rolls her eyes. <Well, this is boring. And I have no desire to be bored.> Before Arthur can stop her, the little gold dragon spreads her wings and flies away into the night.

I don't see it as anything different than what Althior's done with Finnegan in the past. If it's really an issue, I can send her away, it just seems rather unfair for there to be such a *Big Deal* about dragon mistrust and companionship only to have to leave them behind if they want to do something else for a Quest.
