Heroica RPG - Quest #99: Six Thousand Feet Under
Flipz replied to Endgame's topic in The Heroica Archive
Arthur's body flickers between flesh and ink, spiritual energies flickering through his form as his consciousness floated between vision and reality--the line blurred, as it had been just days ago, when-- No... Arthur's eyes snap open, and has body back to normal, in response to the words. The words, and the image of the being behind them, burned in his mind as his fingers clenched around his weapon. "Regret." He levels a hard stare at Grimwald, already knowing the doors would open for them. "Be ready. What we've witnessed so far is nothing compared to what we will face ahead." -

"The White Devil! The White Devil! Who is the...?" Suddenly, to Arthur, the world explodes, and as he falls unconscious his body goes black as ink... -

"Opal, Amethyst, Diamond, perhaps?" As Arthur rearranges the gems, he scrapes his hand on the sharp edge of one of the slots, leaving a splotch of black ink on the stone. "Gah, sorry," he mutters, feebly wiping it off before reinserting the gems in their new positions. "Thanks for not flipping out on me, by the way," he says, rubbing his wound until the scratch disappeared. "The last Hero who figured out I was...well, not normal...kinda tried to kill me. It's nice to know some Heroes who don't default to murderous 'SMITE EVIL!' mode at the tiniest little thing." -
Oh, no, I know the answer, but I don't want to steamroll everything before I give the others a chance to answer (plus I'm pretty sure Grimwald is the only one who can finish this anyway ).

Arthur inspects the shield with his Magnifying Glass, attempting to gauge its strength. As he works, he puzzles over the inscription, eventually working out the solution in his head and reading it out to his companions. "A castle lurks below Feeble sun shines off frigid ice He who possesses a shattered heart wanders here Faint light, suffocated by darkness Beware, for this is the domain of the White Devil." "Hmm...has anyone heard of a White Devil before?" Why does that title seem so...familiar? He looks at the empty slots and sighs, happening to glance at his Gnome companion. "Master Grimwald, I can't make heads or tails of this. Obviously this door has to be opened by putting something in the slots, but I can't for the life of me figure out what. Perhaps you could figure out how--or even if--that inscription is linked to the puzzle before us?" -

As the party walks along Arthur sighs. Maybe it wasn't the right time to reveal it to the others, but he didn't know when a better one would come up. "Minoid, I'm the last person you should be asking about the definition of humanity." He holds his hand out in front of him and allows it to turn to ink, a bit of the substance dripping away before he wills it to re-solidify. "All I can say is this: if you ever do transcend your limits and find your humanity, don't give it up. Don't give it up for anything--it's not worth it." -

"Then all that's left to do is to load the two cages we can currently reach, turn the wheel once, and open and load the last cage. Once that's done, all that's left will be to turn the cages through the waterfall until they're clean, and remove the washed jewels." -

"I was a miner myself, during my adolescence. We mostly focused on inherently magical minerals and ore, but there was some gemstone-bearing stone as well. Like I said, though, we mostly dealt with kimberlite--those are deposits created by certain types of volcanoes--which makes since, since the terrain of my homeland is dominated by a great magically-infused volcano. This mine seems to primarily bear alluvial deposits--rock that's a lithified mass of sediment, specifically referring to such sediment when it's been transformed by water and then deposited in a (primarily) non-marine environment. Alluvial deposits are formed when sediment and bits of stone are weathered away from their source by water, deposited somewhere else, and lithified, which is just a geologically specific term for turned to stone. Judging by the age and unusual structure of this island, I wouldn't be surprised if it was formed by the sinking of Mercution. The magical energies and geological forces at play at the time would certainly explain the unusual concentration of valuable minerals, as well as the unusually rapid speed of the lithification process." "Of course, that's just a hypothesis--I'm not as familiar with sedimentary rock as I am the igneous and metamorphic varieties. I could be completely wrong about this stone being alluvial, though the mining processes here and the local geological terrain dominated by aquatic features are both strong indicators of alluvial and placer deposits." -
Sorry, I'm not complaining about the Quest, it's just...I'm a technical theatre person. Things like that tend to weigh quite heavily on my mind, that's all. Seriously, though, if you go into a club like that in real life, expect to die.
-
Seriously, if Nyx lights a fireball in there, EVERYONE inside has less than a minute to live.

*Re-checks 96.* NOPE. NOPE NOPE NOPE. *Walks away.* Never, ever, EVER go into a building or a club with inadequate fire safety precautions, ESPECIALLY exits that are blocked and/or missing. Does the Station Fire ring any bells for anyone?

"Ah, I've got it. Clever, that--we tended to mine more from kimberlite, and we used more of an ethereal elixir in our ore-washing process anyway, which made a system like this moot. Hmm...unfortunately, we cannot afford any mistakes, and I cannot be certain whether we need to start here or upstairs until I examine the shipment's current state. Minoid, judging by the ore density and variety of precious minerals these deposits are alluvial in nature, correct? I want to make sure I'm not barking up the wrong stalactite before we proceed." Arthur examines the shipment and uses his Magnifying Glass to determine whether the alluvian matrix has fully lithified and, if it has, whether the cementation agent was calcite, silica, clay, or iron oxide. OOC: And that, my friends, is why you always keep your college textbooks. On a related note, damn you for making me open a textbook the same day I completed my last final ever. -
I'm pretty sure I know why Sorrow's going to die, but I'm trying not to think too hard about it so that Arthur doesn't suspect.

First Tarn, and now possibly Haldor? It's the end of an era.

"Sure, we're ready. Oh, and take this to Cobb Alt." Arthur quickly sketches a map of the floor in the connecting tunnel and gives it to Brittany. "Whatever's going on down here has weakened the floor in the tunnel, you'll have to walk that path or make repairs if you want to keep using that passage." -
The XP in Q90 is messed up. Benji should be [38.75+(.25*6=1.5)] Level 40.2 (and grats on hitting 40! That was REALLY quick! ) Nerwen should be [25.33+(.33*4=1.33)] Level 26.66 Thormanil should be [35.25+(.25*6=1.5)] Level 36.75 Guts should be Level 30.75, because Level 30.33 isn't a thing (sorry, Scuba!) Alexis should be Level 43.75 ( ) Alexis' experience needs to be updated throughout the Quest(s) because she should have been leveling up by .2 instead of .25 starting at Level 40.

So if a Mystic Knight gets a Spellspin, she could attack anything she wanted without fear of retribution. Granted, it wouldn't prevent enemies from buffing or healing themselves, but I would argue it would prevent AoE Specials. Also, Enamored has never skipped down the Battle Order before--Alexis has absorbed Free Hits that way in the past, I believe. In any event, I invite you to imagine Cinna with Seductive Perfume rolling a Spellspin with the Pheles Rod (now a dagger)... (That said, it'd actually be really useful for Tensi--since she's stuck on a target until it's dead, she'd benefit a LOT from not taking Damages and Counters thanks to the perfume. )

Arthur glances at Brittany. "Actually, I'd rather we help them make it back to the surface. I don't want to see them getting hurt again. Not to mention, we need to get this shipment to the surface for the Shadeaux." -
That was perfect. This, ladies and gentlemen, is what we call in comedy "timing". Also a good example of comic relief--buoying the tone so as to increase the variety of emotion present in the work, which increases audience engagement and promotes re-readability. QMs can't effectively force this, unfortunately, which puts the onus on players to realize when things are getting too grimdark or too zany and adjust their characters' actions accordingly.

"That would be most helpful, thank y--" "...on second thought, do you folks know if this is a suitable place to rest for a bit? My companions seem to need a moment to restore their vitality." Been a while since I've had to pay that much attention to my Ether...and now I don't have to do it at all. Funny how things change. -

"Yeah, in my experience, mining into weird crypts tends to result in bad things happening. Fun fact: there were actually people in the world who thought it was a good idea to invent stone that tries to dig into the miner if you try to dig into it...and then make it indistinguishable from ordinary granite. So much 'fun'." The last word is dripping with sarcasm. "I, uh, don't suppose you could explain a little more about this mysterious crypt? Where you found it, and when, that sort of thing?"
