  1. I was leaning toward the square ones, that’s what I did for the Mini Imperial Trading Post. I want to recreate the box art so I’ll need to make all the figs shown (plus the monkey of course) Yes, I tried to tweak it a few different times. I tried to brick build around it, but it didn’t look right. I thought there was a skull and crossbones 2x2 tile, but I couldn’t find it in BrickLink Studio. I could always try applying a decal to a larger tile, that could work. Thanks for pointing it out!
  2. I had just finished watching the live action Netflix show when I joined the Brethren of the Brick Seas… so yes it was totally inspired by Red Leg Zeff. I just made a backstory with him loosing his hands instead of a leg. Good catch!
  3. Good point, I just want to be able to represent Steve in some way. It is a contest about him after all. Maybe I’ll put a regular size fig next to the build like the Star Wars sets do.
  4. Very impressive. Once again, I love the comic style of presentation. I really like the modularity of this set, and all the brick built features are top-notch. The trees, rock faces, statues are all well done. I guess if I were to give a critique it would be something about the canoe. I feel it could use a splash of colour. Maybe some red like the old school Islanders canoes or maybe a flag or two. Regardless, this is an epic build, well done!
  5. Thank you @Mister Phes you are doing a phenomenal job keeping this contest updated! Good tip, I’ll see what can be added without increasing the piece count too much. This build is currently 186pcs and I wanted to leave room for microfigs. Since this is a minibuild I wanted to keep it below the 200pcs limit so it would be a [SMALL ENTRY] Thanks for the extensive comment. You are right, the skeleton leg is a recolour (same goes for the parrot). We tried some other parts but nothing available in blue looked good. The hats were my idea and the fences were Sydney’s idea, I agree they look a little off, maybe a plume would make a better flag or the handbag accessory for the netting? We can try some different things. The only reason for using the old style round brick was because Steve’s legs got cut off when using the one with the notch. He kinda looked like a floating ghost, lol Originally Sydney tried brick building the shark. It was a little boxy and a bit too big. It also added to the piece count so hence the fish!
  6. Valid point, I doubt there would be many red pandas in the Caribbean, lol. It was already a stretch to have the jungle encroaching on a medieval style building so I’ll try to keep it more historically accurate.
  7. Too be a kid again and not worry about a little sand in the LEGO bricks, lol. I remember making a river in my sandbox as a kid and floating my pirate ship in the muddy water. Now just thinking of that makes my heart race!
  8. I’m glad I could help Math Wizard get to that comment count as they helped me with the three Cs! I know it has taken some time but I’ve submitted Sydney’s final entry in this contest! Keep those comments and critiques coming everyone!
  9. Here it is, the second entry by my daughter Sydney and myself! Steve would take a slightly different career path, so to acknowledge the next step in his journey we had to do a mini build of the Skull’s Eye Schooner (6286). Sydney did most of the build and I helped with some of the complicated parts like the rope (boy are they finicky in BrickLink Studio). And I gave her some tips like using the hats as Jolly Roger flags. Here are some other views: Now I wanted to get the creative critics to help with the next part. I used Part Design to apply decals to a variety of pieces. I also did a little brick-stack Steve. I’d like everyone’s opinion on which looks best and if you feel they are the right scale or not. A huge thanks to all the participants and hosts of this contest for making it fun and engaging! Cheers Mateys! [Edit] I used the clear-square block with decals to complete the pirate crew. 10 extra pieces puts the count just below 200. And to finish off this entry I placed the figs on the ship and recreated the box art from the original 1993 set! I also adjusted the main sail by applying a decal to a 3x3 tile. This saved a few parts so the grand total (figs included) is approx 190pcs.
  10. I should really look at those new Adventure sets for some inspiration. Maybe BrickLink Studio will add the new animal figs too, they would give the jungle some colour and danger!
  11. I had to stop reading to post a comment. I want to take my sweat time and give your story the attention it deserves. It looks just like a classic comic straight out of the world of classic LEGO Pirates. Everything looks authentic and has a nice amount of detail for a small build. The only critique I would give is to add a splash of colour, maybe some yellow or blue?
  12. Wow, not only did you do a lot of work with your build, you gathered unique pieces and linked references for each one. I would have believed you is you just said - yes, lol Now I might be getting picky, but those gold wings would look really nice on that figurehead too!
  13. That’s really impressive. I personally prefer the minimalist figs that you built. I just told Sydney the max number of pieces and then I added the decal ones so that we didn’t go over the piece count.
  14. Lovely! I released I haven’t commented on this build yet. It really did make me smile Baby Steve is certainly original and I like how he’s eyeing up that quill and scroll looking to create some havoc. I hope he doesn’t draw all over the walls. My only critique is that you didn’t include a story. I realize the pictures speak for themselves, but I’d like to know what is going through Baby Steve’s mind.
  15. I’m kinda curious if the figurehead’s shield has a print on it. I’d also like to know if all the pieces are gold or if you managed to create the effect just by clever piece placement. Nice choice by the way. A ship this epic deserves an epic figurehead, well done!
  16. I just noticed you used the trick of building on a LEGO net in order to make the water flow effect. Well done, you have impressed me once again!
  17. I’ve been working on some tweaks to this build. I’m trying to get some color because it all blends together. For example, I imagined some migratory butterflies might land on these trees, making them almost look like gigantic flowers! Thanks, I wanted to provide updates sooner but I’ve had some computer issues. Be sure to check back in a few days!
  18. You’ve got some serious Nice Parts Usage (NPU). I see mop heads as shrubs and I like the effect the modified ties have on the statue’s mouths. It gives them little fangs!
  19. You can clearly identify the swashbuckler as Steve in the original photos. I’m glad you left them in. It’s a good example on how to enter the contest when you don’t have the official minifig.
  20. Thanks for posting this! Im know you said there’s a fair bit of photos, but you need a lot to showcase all the features you’ve managed to pack into this massive build!
  21. You may have already answered this question, but I was wondering why the choice of red and white stripes on Steve’s vessel? It certainly makes you instantly think “pirate ship” but I was just curious about the design choice.
  22. I knew it would be too easy, lol. The problem with the ship is, to make it look good it needs to be slightly larger scale than the Imperial Trading Post. However that may actually make the figs looks a little closer to the right size. Indeed. The nice thing about a computer program is you can save the old file if you ever wanted to compare how much it has changed. Indeed. 23. If you’d like to guess, I’m sure it won’t be too hard. Here’s a clue: it is another classic set where Steve makes an appearance!
  24. I wonder is parts designer would allow applying a decal to a cape? I guess what is was really implying was that the flag should be rotated so that it looks like cart is flying down the hill and the flag is experiencing the force of the wind pushing it upwards.
