[FINISHED] Maintenance of Eurobricks on 20th January
aFrInaTi0n replied to aFrInaTi0n's topic in Forum Information and Help
No, BBcode was deactivated, so not possible anymore. -
Understood it like so and all fine from my side - just wanted to deliver some insights about the details behind. Unfortunately we are not free to start on a green field Possibly some little things may be tweaked from the colors, not sure yet how we may approach this to make everybody happy as opinions may be so different (which is a good thing!!!)

Also you may not believe how much efforts were put already in the preparations of the upgrade & migration, as everything had to be tested in regard of functionality and not losing contents. For e.g. we are using a plugin which was officially release to the old version - but unfortunately the maketplace of the forum software for those extensions is also discontinued already & the original of the plugin does not reply to any messages. Additionally the vendor of the forum software changed different components in the backgrounds, which led to even more testing. On top of that we had to do final regressiontestings with fresh complete clonings from the live environment towards our testing platform to assure the complete upgrade process is working as expected in the outcome. And oh boy - I can tell you I had a moment yesterday which rendered my failure-backup-plans useless in the first 15 minutes - you know that scene in a movie when the hero crosses an ancient bridge and when he is just in the middle the bridge starts to collapse from behind? It was exactly this feeling... So much for "you can plan for everything". So for today I am very happy I migrated with success and everything is functionally working as it was before - the remaining minor optical things may be worked on.

Possibly clear your cookies and login again - over the day I had an issue with some cronjob not running regulary to send out notification mails for e.g. - may have messed with your cookies.. if not helping, we need to look deeper for your issue. Do you have two profiles for A/B testing in mind with the badges being different than what would be expected? Would be awesome, but all fine if none in mind. I need to go over the thread the next days and gather all up and possibly update the main post with the additional bugs + possible fixes.. but not today anymore as I started 1 AM and fnished 9:30 AM.. so it was just 5h hours of sleep afterwards for today.. :D -
@zoo The other thread may be better for complaints about the current / new themes: For us the main scope was improving security and getting needed updates applied. As I am no dedicated web worker, but an system engineer, I am happy I could do some CSS overwrites (generally no good practice at all...) to recreate the old looks to 90ish% for the default theme - and believe me, there are plenty more - so if you like to participate.. :D Themes were second priority with that in mind as the vendor of the forum software will also release a new major version of their forum product with a complete overhaul of the theme engine and their theme base templates. That is why we also deprioritized themes as all efforts for the current theme recreation will be lost efforts as soon as the new major release got released in a stable version. This is because it is just a Javascript Hack by mine which works with nasty CSS overwrites ("!important") - my javascript is loaded with the site, checking your cookie for the stored value and then applying it over the already rendered page - thats why the flicker comes.. so it is not perfect, but right now I don't have a better solution to offer. (when we have Javascript / HTML / CSS gurus around, we are open for you guys doing the fancy magic :D) I have to add, I personally find the new default themes a little more cleaned up from the looks than the old default one. So opinions may differ - sorry we did not hit your taste!

They employed AI to trick your blocking rules?! Sorry for kidding - I have no clue. Possibly @Jim may answer better than me Theme changes from the vendor we inherited from their new default them for the new version. Need to find that out - is it that sidebar on the right? If so -> I possibly only dreamed about back in my endevours of testing this was configureable in the Backend - but my memories may be wrong here. We may check & decide in the staff to hack the box on the right out of the views. Also have that identified for myself as a miss - will be fixed in the next days. I should possibly mention that / forgot to do so: We disabled BBcode right away as this will be a future default of new versions from the vendor. -

Thanks Thanks & also for the testing before by you! Yeah, some icons are still missing there, and yes you are right, the design was switched to have one icon per row -> we may also adjust this back to the old. -

Not sure if this was possible in the old version as I never tried that out before. So I reckon "yes"?! Thanks for pointing out! We may fine tune the configuration over the next days & weeks -

aFrInaTi0n replied to BrickMonkeyMOCs's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
@2GodBDGlory I feel you... also I am getting more crazy lately with the recent versions when it generally comes to snapping into the location I want a part to go in - whatever viewangle I take, I have the feeling Studio has implemented some AI which understands where it would make the most sense to connect the part to, but this will be disallowed.. and no collision checking enabled. That behavior was much more forgiving some years ago.. @SylvainLS tagging you Sir, maybe you can help the two of us out What would be really neat for axles, if they could have stops every half liftarm-thickness incorporated to easily let them clip in those locations to other parts.. -

@zinnn The forum software provider is in the last steps of upgrading their product to the next major release. So we have the uncertainty of the provider not offering a clear roadmap or estimated arrival of their major release. But as this major upgrade is inevitable all our until-then-done efforts will be rendered useless as I am expecting a complete rework to their theme. What I can tell already: Not all of the old themes will be recreated, as there are over ~140 or so - nobody may be able to handle this.. What may happen: SubForum Admins investing efforts to re-create the latest theme for the Theme SubForums. Pirates, StarWars to call some names.. From the theme-perspective we stepped into not-so-nice situation, but lets phrase it like this: I easily can overlook that for a certain amount of time in regard of higher security levels and a faster site. But I am still sorry for the inconveniences I created for your s (and others) eyes. best regards @SNIPE meh, I think the input box is still bugged for me - so right now I am not sure if this may be unresolved yet.. -

Thanks :) Hope I made it in time when you were expecting to read your eurobricks-news in the morning :D No, all fine and no hackers around - our vessel is safe and sound! For new themes it was a little bit like the egg-chicken equation - without the new version being layed out there was no real need for anybody to create new themes & also no testers for giving feedback. See the upgrade as the egg, from that the chickens, eh themes may arise.. Thanks Thanks, happy to hear its also recognized to be faster. Oh, eagle-eyes - that slipped mine! Thanks. May be a change from the vendor with their new themes we are based on. I basically reverted all user-theme picks & created global overwrites, as the old themes may work poorly with the new forum version. Welcome :) -
Welcome to the upgraded Eurobricks site! Whats new We migrated to a new Server More CPU power More RAM capacity Performant Enterprise SSD drives (RAID allowing high availablility) Latest stable & up to date Debian Linux & Plesk New ElasticSeach & Redis caching We updraded the Invision forum software to the latest available release Enhancing Security & Preparing our platform for the upcoming major release of the forum software later that year Fixing the issue with the cursor not working in the text field Fixing the issue with Search timing out for multiple search tearms due to timeouts We re-created the default theme to look like the old theme Fixed some CSS issues Some minor color changes for some elements to ease up CSS in the background Header images are now being rendered correctly in the mobile view Implemented some higher quality icons (New Thread) Tiny gaps / issues we are already aware of The new forum version has minor changes in the design, so if your eyes or brain tells you "its looking slightly different", then they may be true. We tried to re-create the old default theme (+ Technic theme is the only other I was able to prepare) Is there a Dark Theme available finally? Not really, but I created a little DarkMode Hack via CSS Overwrites + Javascript. Icon is in the top navigation bar (sun/moon). Future themes of subforums may use the feature or create distinct dark themes. The old themes of the subforums are not set as they are not compatible with the new version of the forum software! This is expected and was decided by the staff - subforums themes will be recreated.. I still have to fix some of the Special Tag Icons not being shown. This is not related to the maintenance, but me screwing up last week. Will be fixed the next days [May be expanded] Even if 99.9% are looking fine I would like to encourage people to take close looks for things not working as expected & not hesitating to report here. Enjoy the new site and tell us your opinion in the original thread:

One funny thing though: In my professional IT career the product I am responsible for has a DB size of nearly 6 TB by now with a daily growth of ~10GB - since we are in the TBs already I am not at all shocked / scared of DBs which sizes can be counted in GBs... -

thanks @Bonaparte- the good thing is: even if everything would go wrong and I would fail to achieve the migration to the new host, I can just revert to point back to the current server and no harm may be done.. that helps a lot in regard of not getting too nervous -

This, my friend, was the original topic I applied as an admin & I personally wanted to have fixed in the first place! And I think this is fixed in the new version / so ăăăȘă (Sayonara) to this bugger How dare I? I don't want to be hunted by a community of people in rage of their beloved icons I reckon... So they will stay for sure, also tested Not sure if I am getting the question right, as I am no Moderator and haven't worked in those fields before, I think namechanges can only be done from Mods/Admins by request with reasons. So I think the new software may not have much of an effect into this process. But possibly I missunderstood your question. -

Update from 20th of January, 6 AM UTC Everything went fine - the site is up and running again! Whats new We migrated to a new Server More CPU power More RAM capacity Performant Enterprise SSD drives (RAID allowing high availablility) Latest stable & up to date Debian Linux & Plesk New ElasticSeach & Redis caching We updraded the Invision forum software to the latest available release Enhancing Security & Preparing our platform for the upcoming major release of the forum software later that year Fixing the issue with the cursor not working in the text field Fixing the issue with Search timing out for multiple search tearms due to timeouts We re-created the default theme to look like the old theme Fixed some CSS issues Some minor color changes for some elements to ease up CSS in the background Header images are now being rendered correctly in the mobile view Implemented some higher quality icons (New Thread) [2025/02/08] UPDATE: I have stopped all my efforts on fixing minor issues with the current themes, as the vendor released the new v5.0.0 Release of the product. Tiny gaps / issues we are already aware of The new forum version has minor changes in the design, so if your eyes or brain tells you "its looking slightly different", then they may be true. We tried to re-create the old default theme (+ Technic theme is the only other I was able to prepare) Theme / Visuals: [work in progress] Some elements are hard to read / no good contrast combination of text & background colors (for both Light & Dark theme) [Change] Changed one dark theme background color for quote blocks and other elements, should allow for better readability already [Change] Poll bar colors were changed for better readability of the % values [Change] Three-Dot-Menu on every posting got a more vivid color, as the edit functionality is reachable via this button [work in progress] The old themes are considered deprecated and they need to be recreated for the subforums [WATCHOUT] Setting the old themes may render your forum view useless & you may not be able to set it back! You need to contact us via email. [known/not started yet] Some Special Tag Icons not being shown. This is not related to the maintenance, but me screwing up last week. Will be fixed the next days 1st Update on this: Talked with Jim and I will just upload all the missing pictures to the original places the next weekend 2nd update: Putting files into place possibly fixed some, but not all missing pictures.. further investigation needed [07.02.2025] [known/not started yet] Issue on MouseOver on the "Pinned" buttons leading to the icon of that posting getting hidden. [known/not started yet] Hitting the "mark forum as read" button will hide all icons of the postings until the page is reloaded. [known/not started yet] Dark Theme: "Source Code" of Edit-View is white on white [known] Loading issue with unformated elements at site loading/rendering Users reporting are located around the globe and it may just be long paths, AU/NZ signals have to travel around half the globe twice (request and response) - this may just add up. We are not using any CDN service and are also not considering doing so, as the overall feedback for performance is "better than before". Solved [solved] Annoying sidebar on the right showing up in the topic-view. [solved] Notification Icons in the top NavigationBar being cut-off to the top [solved] Header Image not clickable to return to the main / entry page [solved] Make Read/Unread threads more distinquishable from each other (text boldness) [solved] Special Tags Icons are shown vertically, not horizontally in the profile area [solved] Dark Mode does not persist browser restarts -> now saved in a Cookie for 365 days [improved] DarkMode has a short "flicker" at loading new pages [Change] changed to another Event for the dark theme to be applied earlier in rendering - this has minimized the flicker, but not eliminated. Functionality Email [solved] Email wasn't working between 20th and 26th January, as we had some wrong configurations still applied. Fixed since 26th Jan 2025, 12:30 UTC As a consequence our server may still be listed in some DNS blacklists, will work on getting us off there asap (SPAMhaus, proofpoint done already) Posting content [solved] BBcode has been disabled (that will be forced in the future by the vendor of the product and is highly recommended already to be disabled) [DISCLAIMER] The old format of linking images with "[img][/img]" code is not working anymore due to this mandatory change. Please link your pictures with pasting only the URL (keep the resolution restrictions in mind!) [known/not started yet] Old posts with BBcode may have broken picture links [known/not started yet] Old posts with HTML code may have broken picture links Notifications [needs verification] Notifications may be dimwitted sometimes possibly solution: Clear cookies of eurobricks.com in the browser, log in fresh and check for the browser-settings to have Notification events allowed to be received from the side (before one didn't need to allow the notifications to be sent to the browser) [known/not started yet] No notification sound User Profiles [known/not started yet] Custom Ranks are gone [known/not started yet] Special Tags are showing the URLs instead of the images in the Profile Views. Last Update on 08. February, 12:25 PM CET Even if 99.9% are looking fine I would like to encourage people to take close looks for things not working as expected & not hesitating to report here.
