Brickshelf is shutting down. Let's try to save it.
aFrInaTi0n replied to Trekkie99's topic in General LEGO Discussion
It may not be the the diskspace, but the traffic - as we all know there may be plenty of places where people linked the images - take EB as an example - 1mb image may easily be shown 1000 times - directly 1 gb traffic you have to serve to the requests and also pay to your provider.. Even if the software can be forked there still would be the issue moved links. I think for brickshelf it would be nice if someone could aquire the domain and create an association and let it own the domain - this could assure it would be maintained and also people could freely participate with work or donations. -

@KotZ I as a regular LEGO user would also wish for any new user to get s.th. like bricksafe & I also agree on that may have payed plans included for allowing to keep up such service - thing about such is: I as a user would also want to have that as stable and persistent available over time - but what if my future situation does not allow me to pay my previous plan? Also from the hoster perspective there the issues start to rise: you are getting more and more accounts (possibly people just creating new free plan accounts) where the expectation is to keep them available, but nobody wants to take the costs for this. -

Oh to add, I did not test it as I am not owning any Apple device :D - so all at one owns risk! but I would also hope it is fine - it was at least shared at some lego newsgroup and others mentioned it worked for them.. -

I think the one which may be too big to fail (but being out of mainly LEGO scope): flickr.. *sigh To add: Discord seems to persist all Images in the chats aswell & they can be shared externally... just thinking loud here *cough -

Open Sources doesn't mean it is free of costs. But think of Rebrickable as a platform which is earning money with every sold MOC, which allowed Nathan to host bricksafe for free for this long time without any costs - I think he may just have realized it is costing him too much of not getting any benefit back. Please don't get me wrong on this, I am not mad as he closed the site for new members - I am more suprised he was offering this from the beginning, also my personal opinion is, the 10gb per user are waaaaaay too much and 1GB per user would have been more than enough (+ put some additional price plans for expands on top for power users contributing some money back for paying the service - would need to be a fair deal for both sides though..). -

For people using MAC to get their stuff from brickshelf via a script: https://github.com/timcourtney/brickshelf_downloader I guess Nathan had underestimated the costs for storage/acces for his 10gb/bricksafe-user - I mean Amazon S3 storage may be cheap, even with their auto-tiering - but it still costs. And basically there is no benefit for doing so - so huge kudos to Nathan for hosting bricksafe for us till now for free! .. I can understand this may easily sum up with the 7 million files being stored there & them possibly being in average huge in filesize.. (I guess you are also not caring and just uploading your images in the best quality, as the site offers the automatic resizing anyways, right?! :D) -

better generally don't trust any online provider and always keep private backups would be my recommendation. -

It it somehow "easy" when one knows how to do - all the images are having a unique id - just wrote me a script to start from 1 to 5 million to iterate over and then do some fancy selection stuff to get me the original URL of the picture, as this contains username + folders, then downloading the picture and saving it to a database.. as it starts from the beginning, I guess the average filesize may grow from the current 106kb (times 109483 equals the already 12 GB in disk space...) :D -

Created me a script which is running already to create backups of all files with the original structure.. scraped 55k files in 20 minutes already - if my guessings are right it may get a total size of ~5TB (est would be ~1MB per file for the 5 millions..) -

Interesting Question & nice examples delivered. I think the deactivation rendered all old posts not-working. We may want to address this with a fix - but that would need plenty of caution and testing as it would alter contents of the old posts.. So I guess this won't be done in a blink of an eye.. will add it to the main page. Th last post is pure HTML - need to possible take another look for that.. found another one: source code view of edit functionality is not working for the dark theme... white on white.. yay for the polls getting better readable, I applied already a fix in the technic theme, but did not copy that to the default, as I am waiting for feedback. And thanks for the findings and the warm words! Happy I can aid the community ^^ -

Can't tell for sure - they are gone from the new template we used from the vendor & we need to investigate if we can easily bring them back like they were shown before. On the profile Page the same may apply - we need to take a look into changing it to show them instead of their URLs. Will add both to the main entry, those were missing there yet! -

@Davidz90 IT is BBcode - so everything with [ ] brackets will not work. You need just paste the URLs of pictures (remember to stick to the max resolutions of 1024px) Testpost with your URL without BBcode pasted as plaintext: -

@Corvus Caurinus I am really glad you pointed it out - we had an issue in our DNS settings for mail. I solved the issues, but it may still be the case that our server may falsely listed as a spam-host in some blacklists - working on getting us off there.. Will also add this to the entry posting.. -

@Corvus Caurinus you are right - it seems the mail functionality also is not working - checking this directly, thanks for reporting and sorry for the inconvenience! -
F12 says at least to me "Inter" as 1st of the mentioned font families.. added "letter-spacing: 0.07em;" for the unread fonts.. but looks awkward at least to my eyes.. Ok, I think I found a hopefully better solution: giving a brighter blue to the font color & making them bold. please tell me if that would work better.

@Ngoc Nguyen take a look at https://test.eurobricks.com/forum/forum/115-lego-technic-mindstorms-model-team-and-scale-modeling/ (be aware, its the test environment - please dont accidentally stay there and write comments, as they would be considered lost :D) - did configure the technic theme to use inter instead of roboto. Does it allow for better visual differentiation? (ignore other weirdnesses as I am experimenting with CSS without daring to make other things worse - as this unfortunately is the way to go to test if the own overwrite are not making something else worse.. :D).

That would be much more development "costs" (refering to efforts in time). Using cookies for persistance was the long hanging fruit here. I doubt if I ever may get into their framework to be able to do such with ease.. Also I still think the cookie-solution is sufficient enough, as I think that preference is a one-timer to be set per used device & also allow for e.g. having your mobile on the dark theme to save you battery and the desktop still in the regular white theme. But still my solution is not ideal. But as also put earlier: We are waiting for the big v5.0 of the forum software, which may be released in Q1/2025 & with that all v4.x efforts may be lost anyways..

Stud.io Noob Questions
aFrInaTi0n replied to BrickMonkeyMOCs's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Doesn't efferman has created most of them already? Not sure if he had a repo or a homepage.. but I think with his works you may be very happy already. Otherwise google for Philos PartPacks.. -
Because it may sound easy from the user perspective, but if I remember correctly it was hard to create a CSS fix for that without affecting the whole site / other stuff. As said I have to take closer looks the next days for what I can do, but I can't promise anything. Also the regular font weight is already normal - so it would just leave the option to make it leight weight. (possibly stupid) question: the icon and the other background color are not working for you as good visual indicators? (please don't get me wrong, just asking as I can see very little complaints in numbers about that detail - would like to understand what the difference may be & all fine if you tell "my visual main indicator is the boldness of text").

@Aurorasaurus (and others having a slow page load experience): Could you try to get me some insights from your client side? No filtered audio and you have to listen to my lovely voice but besides of that little blood which may drip out of your ears () I hope it helps for identifying the reason for the issue..

@Toastie I suspect network related long paths, as you me are stting in germany and the server is also located in germany - so our peering may be good and the network paths be short - leading to really fast loading speeds. For Australia it may be another situation. Also from my professional career i know our users from PACI region usually have higher pings & everything feeling laggy when they use for e.g. Citrix when it relies on getting working against resources which are located in our european datacenters..
