Ufff, it is very hard to compare 8043 and 8258. First of all, 8043 is a fully RC machine, it has a lot of gears, 4 motors, 2 receivers, bottom line a lot of PF things. The part count is is not as high as the Crane Truck. On the other hand, 8258 Crane Truck stands out from the crowd as being imho, the best looking technic model ever created (close behind is 8285). At 1800+ pieces, you get an XL motor, a switch, a lot of useful parts/gears/etc. There is only one good advice to give you, get them both if you can. They are really nice sets.

Get a used 8043, i think you will find it at the amount of money you have. It has rc parts and 4 motors, lots of gears. It is a wonderful set !

So, we are so close to the end of this year and i was wondering what were your Lego Technic purchases ? For me, this was a very good year i must say, i got the 42006 Excavator, 42000 Formula 1 car, 42007 Dirt Bike and the Quad from last year, and not last the 8258 crane Truck and the 8285 Tow Truck. What were the sets that you bought this year and were you satisfied by your purchases ?

Gee's General Newbie Topic
Freekysch replied to Gee's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'd say 8258 is a must for every technic collector, and is worth much more than a parts-pack (if you can get it at a decent price). 8285 is a great looking set too, but does not come with a lot of functions, but comes with lots of useful parts and nice silver wheels. Another VERY good model is 8265 Front Loader. -

[REVIEW] 42024 - Container Truck
Freekysch replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Very very veeery nice review Jim, thank you very much. When i first saw this set, i was sure i was not going to buy it, but now that i see this review, i will get it as soon as it hits the stores. Not the prettiest truck made by Lego (but prettier then 42008), but i like the colors and the fact that it comes without PF: I have enough sets with PF and never use them. -
Rare Technic sets
Freekysch replied to Brandon Miller's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I think a major factor in the rareness of a set was its popularity. For example, the 8285 Tow Trucks is somehow a rare set, because it was not a favorite of it's time, and because 2006 was not a very good year for Lego Technic in general. -
Rare Technic sets

I do think the Model Team ones are kinda of rare, i do not know what to say about the technic ones (beside they are awesome ) -
Hmmm, this Christmas i hope to get 8109 Flatbed Truck, but i do not know if i`ll get lucky.

I had the same problem as you Horace T, and i got the 42000 and i do not regret it. 42008 is ok, but it has some problems in term of design imho. So, i would say go for the F1 car !
