Fire/police is not very popular at my house. Right now my son is messing with the 42009 teaching his friend that 'clicking LAs are bad, mmkay?!'
-
It's AFOLs (who make up a tiny portion of the buyers, the '5%' figure have been mentioned a few times) who complain about realism, not kids It's true that TLG is a biggie now, but how well did trains sell, percentage wise, back then campared to now? I think it was a bigger succes back then. But as you mention, we'll likely never know And TLG could be prepairing the biggest train line ever for all we now. They must have some clue how well the recent rather large line of trains have sold Lastly, back then trains for me wasn't a seperate theme, it was just part of Town. Fitted perfectly with that theme with the numerous train buildings etc. I'd like TLG to do something similar (don't we all?) again Until then, it's MOCing time

Black beams are very dark grey, however parts like this .. : .. are solid black. Annoying Yellow is all over the map since TLG changed their slogan from 'Only the best is good enough' to 'Only the highest profit is good enough' (Yes, I know all about the precoloured ABS pellets versus the crap they're using now) If this was a 200USD Apple product with 50 shades of white we'd have people in the streets rioting

Do you know that train sales are 'an all time high'? Higher than say the heyday in the 70/80s? Sure kids like trains but put a 7938 next to the new RPG or Chima castle and we both now what flies off the shelf first Yeah, we'we gotten quite a few trains lately and a good part of them geared to the older buyers, but TLG doesn't seem to be wilingly to return to a complete train theme again. We just get the odd train here and there You can maintain the idea that kids needs recognisable trains but I don't buy it. It's only now TLG has build such models and in the 70/80s they where much more generic I've got a pretty decent train layout. I also got a good bit of Star Wars, Technic, pirates, Chima/Ninjago and loads of Classic Castle/Space. My son and his friends (aged 4 to 7) are not really that impressed with my trains but the rest (Technic included) makes me quite popular in kindergarden
-
The reason they don't sell is because kids are not into trains. They don't care about networks etc so that point is moot

Trucks in the US and EU are rather different TLG don't do trains 'cause they don't sell. Simple as that. They could however do a lot to push a new line, but they choose not to. At least it easy to get all the parts we need for our MOCs, so I think there's little need to complain. Sure, I'd luv to see a fullblown train them like in the eighties .. might happen one day, might not. Life is too short to wait for that

Just finished building .. I think TLG made a mistake by putting just one (not powerfull enough) motor into it. The drivetrain to the stabilizers are simply too complicated and thus much friction is going on. I'd put a motor in chassis and one in superstructure and just wires going through the turntable. Either that or a much more powerfull XL motor just under the turntable to drive the lot The three tier boom is a nice idea, but I can get the same length with just a simple two part boom. I'm not fond of that string thing It was a fun build, but it's not really good, imho. The stabilizers can't actually lift the truck and the crane cannot actually lift anything. Steering is very nice though I'll keep it as it is and continue my own MOC I've found one mistake in the instructions though .. on page 11/book 5 look closely at the stickers

It's not. Read caperberry's exellent blog about it here : http://www.newelementary.com/2013/07/like-virgin.html I see as it's sort revival of Modulex geared towards architects. It could probably also be used as a parts pack along with the other Architecture sets to design new buildings. As a regular set for Afols, it probably has little value though. I know I got all the parts as they're quite common ..

Beware that the arms of homemaker figs tend to wear out, also the blue ones are often badly discoulered. I'm not a homemaker collector but I do a lot of Classic Space/Aquanaut MOCs and thus use a lot of those arms. 'Bout 50% of my purchases have not been in good condition (BL, ebay and local ads) Classic Space figs can be found at BL, but DO check the sellers notes (if any) about their condition. Gold, by the way, does not take kindly to oxy treatment and/or sweaty fingers .. Those reissue Space figs hasen't got the right helmet, important for us CS nerds It's not just the 'baby', it's all that darn tiling .. looked real wrong to me back then. No studs? Not LEGO Also, 6950 is a real thing of beauty. Actually, it's the only set I miss in my CS collection. Hard to find with a box If it was me looking for Homemaker figs, I'd just buy the head/hair and arms and use my inventory of bricks to do the rest. No real need to buy actual Homake figs as they're all brickbuild 'cept for the parts I've mentioned. There's quite an interesting selection of heads/hair though. Much more than we got in minifigs for many many years ... I didn't have any as a child, but my sis had a bunch (remember stealing that cool spacepart from her hair saloon, much to her agony, haha), but I allways hated that I had to take them apart and/or find new bricks to make them sit down. .. Oh, I remember I did have the cowboys, first instance of LEGO shooters ever?

Stronger Turntable Alternatives
1974 replied to timslegos's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
As other have said, your problem is balance. When balanced and it's still wobbling, use bearings. However this means a lot of parts and thus a bulky build. In my experience those turntables hold up åretty well even with several kilos attached .. if balanced properly -
You mention amazon, so I guess you mainly buy sets? BL is _the_ place to go for sny LEGO purchases! You'll find just about anything there, no such other place exists

Brickset/TLG is worthless for hunting down parts that don't exist in a particular colour. Bricklink is great for that (And maybe Ebay but I don't use that site for LEGO) I've recently bought two 6108 arches in yellow, just what I needed to complete my classic Black Falcon Castle MOC .. they do not come in any set, but I managed to find two on BL cheaply ('bout a euro and a half) .. None have ever been for sale before, none are for sale now (You can check BL and see two were sold in March - to me ) I do wonder where they came from though as I've bought many parts that seemingly don't exist in a particular colour but there always seem to quite a few available anywway .. Like, I bought a bunch of 6081 in green from studsontop.com but they had plenty for sale as well. I guess they come from the stock Legoland builders use? Just because a part isn't available in a set that doesn't mean you cannout buy/find it Happy hunting Bricklink don't add anything, users do. Once a part in the database, like the old 30357 (available since 1999), users are free to sell them in any colour as long as they actually have it in stock. BL trumps BS ONLY if you're looking for a new part that has not yet been BL inventoried (which is just a matter of weeks anyway), then mayby, just maybe you can find it on ebay in a non officical colour.. but I really doubt that Parts that come in 'wrong' colour are mostly parts that have been around for quite a while (testmolds are a whole 'nother subject) and primarily comes from what Legoland builders are using and/or people who call up TLG and order N x thousand of whatever (<-- last one is a guess, don't shoot me)

12V motor
1974 replied to Good old Lego builder's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yes, but slow speed on high RPM DC motors means very little torque. To maintian the torque you need gears. Allthough if you use too many (that is too many gears, not too high reduction) you again end up with little torque due all the firction in LEGO parts Edit : Sorry 'bout the formatting, dunno what when wrong there?? -
technic 8878 e 8887

There are non for sale in Italy/BL at the moment. Get them from any EU country/BL and shipping shouldn't be too expensive -
12V motor
1974 replied to Good old Lego builder's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I've got several of these. They're cool for trains if you like them exposed. It's not much different from the 4,5V old grey ones ... lotsa rpm, little torque. The 880 set was kind of an oddball and was meant to be connected to the 7864 _train_ transformer .. which would then give you speed control, something all the earlier motors lacked -
Release date unknown at the moment. I've heard, and don't quote me on that , that there is significant delivery and quality problems as well ... Sorry, no real hard quotable info as of now. Better to get your parts of BL if you need them asap

Next CUUSOO set: 21103 Back to the Future™ Time Machine
1974 replied to Blakstone's topic in LEGO Licensed
Thank, Tragic Banjo Edit : Where did you find that quote? I couldn't find it on CUUSOO, but maybe my googlefoo is week .. -
If you got specific questions, pm me. I got a few numbers I can call Well, they don't make the motors/internal planetary gears themselves so it could be a problem with a subcontractor. Either quality and/or availability. But that's not info privy to us mortals, I guess
