Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
RichardGoring replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
That looks awesome! I bought a large cup full of 1x2 trans dark blue tiles ages ago on the PAB wall and have been wanting to use them as the facade of a building for a long time. I wonder if I should try with the jazz club, to give a similar, albeit more blue, feel to that theatre. I agree that the Bookshop residential house doesn't really fit. Even less so than the Pet Shop townhouse. But I'm glad they made it, because it's a cool house, and the setups you see where people have recoloured them in a variety of shades look awesome. I would love them to do a hospital, but I wonder if they will, given that the modulars often seem set in the 30s/40s/50s, and it's probably not very LEGO to replicate the kind of healthcare they offered back then. Back to the Assembled interview, he talks about trying to figure out what the lack of wall/doorway between the pizzeria and jazz club is. I was hoping he'd have mentioned it was there for greater access/playability (which they said for the Police Station lowered walls, and I was fine with, and he said about the jazz club stage lighting), so I was disappointed. It suggests a more cynical view that it's cost cutting, which is a real shame, as it's pretty odd and hard to suspend your disbelief for. -

Reading the Brickset interview, he confirms that they don't get new pieces, and that the double bass was for VIDIYO. That suggests there may be other VIDIYO moulds that make it into sets, which would be nice as some of them were excellent. On the colour, he says it was all dark blue, which I can see being a bit too much, but not sure they needed to stick with the dark colour to 'give that nighttime feel'. Although seeing the wide shots with other modulars there certainly makes it feel less over the top than the original leaked images. I don't see this as being a PR piece at all. Brickset is a gentle website, run by LEGO fans. It sounds like an enthusiastic and respectful fan interview. I don't know what would be gained by doing a challenging interview with the designer of a LEGO set. -

Apparently Ashnflash has said in a video that one of the original concepts was a newspaper HQ, but they moved away from that due to a clash with the Daily Bugle. I wonder if they made concept sketches and whether those will ever come out, like the early ones for the Boutique Hotel. -

You never know. It could still be fake. Maybe someone has hacked the LEGO website... -

Official pictures are on Reddit Legoleak, from a New Zealand store. As expected, and as before, the more I see it, the more I like it. Even the dark red is starting to grow on me, especially in the wide lifestyle photos. -

Brick Clicker has a YouTube video up with the photo. It's a bit blurry, but you can see two white rabbits in there. Doesn't look like there are any other animals, but it's hard to make out a lot of the stuff at the back of the pile.- 5,943 replies

I'm with both of you. The blue looks good and is appropriate for the street entrance of a jazz club. It's the red that doesn't work for me. Sand red would be so much better. But it may be better in person. Sometimes the colours don't quite work out on the artwork (although the lifestyle photo looks like it gives pretty realistic colours). In other news, Walmart in the US is selling 10291 Queer Eye for $45 (plus various sites that are offering up to 10% cashback at the moment - Rakuten and Honey). It has nearly 200 masonry bricks and 800 other parts which are useful for buildings, so I forsee some good MOCs coming from this, and a heads up for anyone that wants to get one/some. -

It was Downtown Diner that got me into modulars. I loved how it looked and feel that it's a shame there aren't others like it. Would love another Art Deco or Streamline modular in the future, but can definitely see that too many wouldn't work. From there I've come to appreciate them a lot more. Parisian Restaurant, Detectives Office, and Brick Bank are all up there, for me. I personally like how squat the Brick Bank is. If it were taller it would lose its nice composition. It looks solid, like a safe. And I like having the laundromat to give that sense of going down a side street/alley off a main boulevard. -

I fit into that category of being drawn in by the microscale Hogwarts. For a while it was the only Harry Potter set I had, as I think it looks fabulous as a mythic castle, and you can ignore the Harry Potter stuff. So it definitely works for LEGO, but inevitably frustrating for many here. It was also the gateway into getting more HP stuff, as I got Diagon Alley (but not Hogwarts Icons or Hogwarts Express, and then a load of the 2018-2020 playsets once I saw the direction they were taking for 2021 (which I didn't particularly like). I've not built any of them, yet, as I figured that if my children get into Harry Potter in a few years, they'll enjoy them. And if not, they're great starting points for MOCs. All of which is to say, if it looks good, builds well, and has presence, I'd be happy with either minifigure or microscale. -

And you could probably lose 1000-1500 from those two in LEGO's version, as they tend to avoid some if the repeating detail, to give you pieces for the gallery and/or environmental scenery. -

If I think about minifig scale, and 6000 pieces, you could combine 80024 Legendary Flower Fruit Mountain (2000) for the terrain with maybe something about the size of 75954 Harry Potter Hogwarts Great Hall (1000) for a main structure, and then scenes for the council (maybe 750, similar to 75339 Death Starâ„¢ Trash Compactor Diorama), Frodo's recovery (another 750), and the gallery with Narsil (for a final 750). All feel reasonable in terms of their own scene, could be done well, could be linked nicely together. You get three major scenes, plus the architecture and environment. So I can definitely see it being minifigure scale and looking good. Hogwarts had to be microscale because of the size, but it doesn't feel like this does. Although I'm sure it would look great if they decided to cover a much larger area at microscale. Either way, the source material is great for creating a lovely model that should be fun to build. -

I can't see them doing a music hall next year, with a jazz club now, so it's not as if Andy Sax will be making it into the line any time soon. What a shame to have missed not only a cool Easter egg, but also to include probably the most iconic jazz instruments (piano, trumpet, and sax). Even more frustratingly, they include two saxophones in the Winter Wonderland fun & funky pack, but that's only available as a VIP reward, and not in the US at all. Let's hope that does become available in February. Or that the associated GWP is a pizza delivery van taking the pizza to a hungry Andy Sax. Or both! -

I like to group them in a similar way. For me, it will fit well alongside Detective's Office, Petshop, Bookshop, and Corner Garage. It has that mid-level commercial feel to it. Not residential, not civic, not grand and ornate. Could put the Palace Cinema in there too, but it might conflict with it a bit too much. -

I rather like the interior shots. Even blurry (or maybe because they are blurry) they feel very real and like the space they're trying to replicate. Although those view points won't be achievable in the real model, so it may feel very different from above. I didn't think about it before, but why is there a magician in a jazz club? Sadly, nothing that suggests a real magic trick play feature. And it does appear to be 8 figures. -

They did stickers in the Palace Cinema, and given the large poster there's a risk you might get that as a sticker too (and possibly the sign), but hopefully not. -

Absolutely. I should have said, I enjoy seeing things like Hogwarts Icons, Hogwarts Express, and Hulkbuster, and I'm pleased that others get joy from them, but they don't interest me, and that's probably good for my wallet and space! I'm glad they exist, but I hope the LOTR D2C doesn't fall into that category. -

Certainly feel the same that it's not terrible when a large expensive set comes out that doesn't really work. I enjoy seeing things like Hogwarts Icons, Hogwarts Express, and Hulkbuster, but they don't interest me in their execution, so I can easily avoid them, making the decision of what to get that bit easier. But it would be a shame if this upcoming set joined that category. -

If it is a fake, then terrific effort, and great build up to the real thing. You can get recoloured pieces from other manufacturers easily enough. I just wonder why someone would go to so much effort. Fakes do not usually have this level of dedication behind them. But then, I've never understood people who make stuff up about LEGO. -

Many talk about wanting to go back to one building per baseplate, but I'm glad they did a 20/12 split building for this. A jazz club doesn't need to be that big. Something like an opera house, theatre, or national art gallery would. Likewise a hospital, school, or (main) post office. But many of the recent building types don't warrant such a large space, and it does create a nice variety of styles, colours, width, heights, and depths, for a more varied and organically grown street. It's definitely growing on me. Looking forward to the interior photos and features. -

Would be a shame, as your insight on the build would be good to hear. I can see why they wouldn't put it next to the Boutique hotel though, as the style is really very different. I tend to try and keep mine grouped together thematically - civic, grand/old, more seedy downtown, 'modern' 50s. Of the currently available modulars, Assembly Square would probably fit best, but that might be too prominent, take the new set off-centre, and it might not be around for much longer (pure speculation based on age). I would love that. The detective's office and brick bank play features/stories are genuinely some of my favourite parts of the modulars. -

Agreed, the Sanctum (and Daily Bugle) are at a different scale to the modular buildings, which I find frustrating. I bought two, and will attempt to combine them into a proper four floor building that's 1.5x wider to give a closer scale. Although I'm a little concerned that it will dominate too much. The modular scale and composition generally is great as it gives you the essence of the building without needing all the repetition that a real world building has. It does, any I think it looks lovely. The problem is that it's next to a very American inspired jazz club - both style and function - so there's a bit of dissonance going on with the whole thing. Could do. But to me it feels like it should be a bit blind and decorated. Maybe it's the problem of scale, but I could image this being highly detailed in real life, with perhaps shades of blue tiles to make it really standout. The issue for me is that the dark red doesn't feel like it goes. I'd prefera slightly more muted colour, like sand red as others have suggested. But we don't get much in the way of red buildings, so I should probably stop. Having looked at it on a larger screen it's definitely growing on me. The details are very neat. I particularly like the hanging baskets on the pizzeria/tailors. -

Careful what you wish for though, because there is a worrying number of Harrys in some sets. How many does the Hogwarts Express have? But yes, sensibly, this isn't trying to appeal to children AND shoehorn a movie franchise into it, so we should be OK. -

My initial impression is that it's a bit disappointing, but that is often the case with blurry leaked images, or just a single picture, as with this. I had the same feeling with the police station, but it grew on me. It may also have something to do with having recently paid after market prices for the fire station (something I very, very rarely do), as I wanted a dark red building, and now another comes along! It does look very similar to the fire station too. I think maybe the conflict of the dark red and blue doesn't work well for me. -

If Jurassic World is anything to go by, we'll have a Frodo in every set, even if he wasn't is the scene (or the movie)! So many Owens...
