That is the nicest looking 6w lego-ified P42 and amfleet set I've seen! It's a shame wedge 2876 has never been made in Dark Blue, but you're giving me ideas on trying to build your loco in either Empire Service colors or one of the heritage schemes. Awesome stuff, it would be great to see it in real brick! SD

I belong to a newer LUG that doesn't have a whole lot of experience running big train layouts, but I'm a train guy and over the past couple years I've worked to expand the size of our displays, and also the size of our trains. I've got quite a few long 6w trains that I've been running, but unfortunately I'm finding that the performance degrades from show to show. I generally try to run trains with as many motors as possible to spread the load, either 4 9v motors, or 2 9v with 2 PF motors attached. Two controllers supplying power, and multiple power feeds around the loop. I cleaned our track with a good scrub of a pink eraser and then rubbing alcohol. I still have continuity issues and stuttering in some places, and they get worse each show. We're also burning up 9v motors like crazy. Some layouts they run for days, others they are toast in a couple hours, I can't make any sense of it. My PF motors however go like mad no matter what. What advice do you have for me, or tips that will help me make a better running layout? SD

No we haven't taken measurements yet, I've got to wire an inline amp meter up one of these days. However we had the exact same performance issues with a standard 9v motor with 2 axle pickup and the single axle. The spacing completely removed it. I will do some tests this weekend and come back with my results. SD

Members of my LUG got a bunch of Bevin's Bricks axles and experimented with them at our last show. Using a single axle for power supply does not work well even at speed, BUT using two single axles spaced out longer than a track section resulted in the smoothest running train we've seen so far. We're using all old 9v track that I meticulously cleaned but there are still small continuity problems between pieces here and there. This wouldn't be solved by the double axle truck, but the spaced single axles do a great job, all the stuttering and jolting issues we had with even lego 9v motors disappeared. SD

Has anyone tried fitting these ballast plates to FX bricks track by any chance? SD100

Designing bogies with 3 axes for an E-locomotive

I'll take pics later, but for an SD40 MOC I've been working on I put the 3rd axle on a pivot, braced by part no. 45590. (https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=45590&name=Technic, Axle Connector Double - Flexible Rubber&category=[Technic, Connector]#T=C) I have yet to have an issue with truck steering with it. That is a sharp looking locomotive right there... Do you have any plans on running it at conventions in the near future? SD
-
@Ashi Valkoinen Would you be willing to share a breakdown of your mechanism? I've got some of the switches and I've been searching for a way to motorize them, but haven't been able to come up with anything that low profile yet... Thanks, SD

Love those boxcars! Thats a KISS method that really carries through. SD

That looks great, but 6 axles under the tender would look even better! NYC Tenders were HEAVY. SD

Motor is just a different plug, it'll fit into the same space fine. And you already have the controller from 60197 so you're good. SD
-
You can swap it over to the Powered Up box and motor with almost no modifications. Only thing may be accommodating access to the power button, but that shouldn't be difficult. SD

To be fair, the track is much easier to produce... Also, buying used 9v motors at around $45 where I'm at is probably a cheaper option at this point for power pickup. While running PF motors off a power pickup axle does sound like a great idea, the fact that my club burned up 4 9v motors our last show also demonstrates the challenges presented in trying to bring a similar product to market. If people are going to run the heck out of new motors they have to be able to hold up. People running this stuff under 8w trains was never what LEGO designed it for (And I wasn't). But if I buy a $100 motor from FX and toast it in one show, there is gonna be a lot of buyer remorse. If I toast a bunch of $15 PF motors, I'm gonna feel a lot less bad, lol. That makes me understand the process a lot more. SD

@AbleChristopher Once this is complete, you gotta let us know if you're gonna be running it at any shows. I'd love to see that thing on a layout. SD- 39 replies

@michaelgale My LUGmates and I are looking forward to a show next weekend with a bunch of new switches and R104s. They look amazing and it's such a huge upgrade from what we had before. Is there any estimated timeline on the larger radius curves? I know you've said the power pickup is probably the next focus, and I'm looking forward to that, but I'll buy up curves like no ones business as well... Thanks! SD

OT but it will pull anything if you take the time to put in roller bearings. SD

That image almost makes me think the designers intended this set as a coach pack for the crocodile, and that kind of explain why they didn't put much into the loco... SD

I'm just really hoping to see Stea... I mean Lords' rebuild of that loco, cause that's something I'd buy off rebrickable... SD

^What he said about the stripes. That starts out as a hard scheme to do in lego but you made it all fit and look great! SD

Wow. That's a lot of work right there, but that's an awesome looking set of equipment! I'm actually sitting here building your GP40 but that SD unit is giving me all kinds of bad ideas. And all the detail from the decals just takes everything to a whole new level! SD

You got a multimeter? Check and inspect everything. Clean all the contacts if you haven't. If you do have a multimeter I'd check each point to see where your voltage drops off... If the wire insulation is breaking apart anywhere than that's probably the issue. There are topics on here about replacing it, I just did it and it's a bit finicky not not too hard. SD

I'm trying to bring a lot of the old trains up to AT LEAST Power Functions compatability but I'm running out of the wires I stocked up on. Needing the 9v connector is whats got me bogged up. Is there anything on the second hand market that has that adapter function? I can get plenty of 9v to 9v or PF to PF wires but that is not what I need. Thanks, SD

Yea I think LBG+DBG would stand out a lot better despite not being quite the correct color. SD

This has been a consistent problem with FX Bricks... But on the other hand, is it really a problem? As much as waiting sucks, when their product finally gets released, it's bulletproof. I just got a loop of r104s and they are flawless! I'm gonna keep throwing money at this guy for a long time... SD
