LEGO Ideas Discussion
astral brick replied to The Real Indiana Jones's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I am always perplexed when a toy that reproduces a musical instrument costs more than the entry level version of the true instrument (I can also think of the various guitar hero controllers). -
Are "Big Bang Themes" a Bad Strategy?
astral brick replied to Lego David's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I miss them too, but apparently there is no coming back from transmediality. Nowadays tv series, movies and videogames are not marketing's elements whose purpose is to promote a product (Lego) but they are themselves a product, perhaps the product which is making the higher profits. The same happened with comic books. -
Considering what the Empire represents in Star Wars, I always found extremely frightening that so many children want to dress as Darth Vader, a homicidal leader of a warmonger dictatorship. But I guess Vader is a cool guy after all, as long as its merchandising sells. Certainly it is ok for Lego, they are actually celebrating him by selling his mosaic. So educative, right?

Exactly, a gift-with-purchase should be good, but not too good or they will suffer a loss of revenue for not selling it. These are other examples https://brickset.com/sets/40433-1/1989-Batmobile https://brickset.com/sets/40338-1/Christmas-Tree Eventually these marketing strategies create the deleterious phenomenon of secondary markets' speculations, which are harmful both to collectors and to Lego itself.

Stroke of genius from Lego's marketing, from the name of the theme to the reasons of buying the same set more than once. Perhaps the first true set to promote the adult-targeted line, not a coincidence that the promotional pictures show a (presumably wealthy) man browsing his vinyl collection or a woman in the act of building. The message is clear: adults, give us your money, it is ok to buy Lego now, it is not only for kids anymore (oh really?). Anyway a very interesting corollary is that Lego has officially subsumed what is considered a classic conventions' exercise. Therefore I would even dare to think that maybe there is hope for other afols' peculiarities such as gbc or Neo Classic Space.

So true. I was astonished by the number of alternative models that I saw in a review. Exactly, you caught the spirit of the thread.

How come this jewel https://brickset.com/sets/40411-1/Creative-Fun-12-in-1 is a gift-with-purchase instead of being on sale? How to shoot yourself in the foot.

They didn't even celebrate Space 40th anniversary, how could you possibly think they would care about Bionicle? -

Considering the brand's family-oriented choices, I wonder if Lego's marketing has noticed the lifestyle of Macaulay Culkin. -
Unexplored markets

Unbelievable shameful behaviour of the brand. Greatest solidarity with you. Moreover I am afraid you are in good company, there are many other sets based on known mocs. These Lego clones' companies seem to thrive exploiting areas left uncovered by Lego, such as mature licenses or themes often craved by many afols. Food for thought. People will understand, eventually.- 32 replies

LEGO Ideas: Made-to-measure ethics
astral brick replied to astral brick's topic in General LEGO Discussion
The problem is 1% of what? Only Lego knows exactly how many sets are sold, the beneficiary of the 1% doesn't have access to this essential information. I am in agreement. The problem in this case is to establish which law has to be applied, the Danish one or beneficiary's national one. There are so many intricacies related to the criteria of choice of the competent court in the international procedure law. I think you have a point.- 14 replies

LEGO Ideas: Made-to-measure ethics
astral brick replied to astral brick's topic in General LEGO Discussion
No worries, no defenders to the bitter end and no rhetorical devices' lists, so far. In my opinion it is pretty fair, reaching a good level of execution is relatively easy nowadays, but finding interesting concepts is much more difficult. That's why an idea, ie a thought, is so valuable. Moreover they would - and should - spare designers' and supporters' time and expectations.- 14 replies

In relation to Lego Ideas: - Topics' limits: ethical, reasonable - 1% royalties: unethical, they should be - at least - 10% - 3 years to sell instructions after rejection: unethical, the designers should be able to regain possession of their own ips immediately after the deadline's expiration or the refusal - Rejecting a model because of internal development: understandable, however ethical only if the model is rejected in the bud or in the very early stage of support's gathering - Selling a model which shares many similarities with a submitted idea: debatable, related to the outcomes of the previous point, overall unethical and counterproductive in term of brand image. Since coincidences are hard to prove, the idea's designer should receive some benefits.

Summarizing: - WeDo 2.0 - Spike Prime - Mindstorms Ev3 I believe that, since their introduction, automation and then coding were supposed to represent the natural evolution of Technic, however they ended to be confined in the educational niche. Moreover, wouldn't have been better, on a marketing level, to avoid the fragmentation in three themes? I understand that there are different ages and costs but I think that Lego could have stuck with only one sub-brand, whatever it was, then proceeding to diversify. A single sub-brand would have increased the exposure, hence the sales. Confusing marketing, wasted opportunities.

Thus leaving the field open to competitors, not a smart move. I love basketball gbc too, especially this model Unfortunately the designer doesn't sell the instructions anymore. The embodiment of what I was thinking of when I started this thread, all at once.- 32 replies

Lego Masters Australia Season 02 Impressions
astral brick replied to astral brick's topic in General LEGO Discussion
S P O I L E R > So far my favourite team has been Jackson and Alex, especially their first model, the steampunk one, was magnificent. I hope they win. And congratulations to Jackson and Alex for their victory! Amazing skills and great consistency since episode one. Props to Queenslanders, Andrew and Damian, fierce competitors until the end. Much appreciated, during the entire season, the lack of the usual fake drama and scripted arguments that "reality" shows usually feature.- 7 replies
