Impossible LEGO
pleegwat replied to Boxerlego's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
My thoughts exactly. This kind of thing is (barely) disassembleable only because an axle with stop is used. -
This was used by Dutch DAF YA-328 military vehicles. They would only use six-wheel drive while off-road; for on-road use the drive to the front wheels would be disconnected.

That is what the flex system was in the mid90s. Ten year old me snapped more of them than he left intact. -

Clutch gears with 12 teeth aren't possible in the normal 1u wide format - not enough meat between the clutch and the teeth. I guess it could be done wider (so the clutch sits besides the teeth instead of underneath them) but TLG doing that seems even less likely than them implementing 24z or larger clutch gears. -

I wonder if you could put the drive axle beside the differential instead of above it, saving vertical room.- 21 replies

Axle Collection Thread

I gave it a try, and it should be noted that while it mates it will not pivot at all. Or am I doing it wrong? -

28z/12z should mesh here, given that 20z/20z meshes on the same axle pair (sum of teeth count is the same) -
I think it might be possible to drive all LAs with one drive motor and one gear-switch motor. The four gear modes would be: Vertical LAs same direction Vertical LAs different direction Horizontal LAs same direction Horizontal LAs different direction. I think you could set his up with one rotating catch and four driving rings (one for each LA). The one obstruction here is if the geometry isn't quite that simple, there may be specific configurations where the opposing LAs need to turn in different speeds, or the other pair needs to move as well, to keep the movement believable. An advantage of such a setup is that you could add additional gear modes for the ripper without adding motors.

Since you seem to be using 5x7 frames and pendular suspension, you should be able to fit differentials inside there, at least for the rear axles? If you use the 'old' differentials (which drive from a 20z) you should also be able to drive them from above with an 8z gear, and avoid the drive axle also supporting the pendular suspension. I don't think the same is possible with the new 'heavy-duty' differentials though. -
I've been nerdsniped on this. The shallowest way to pass a second function through a turntable is the blue 20z double bevel gear with pinhole. You can interact with this from both sides with 12z single bevel gears in the same layer as the turntable's mounting holes, and the axles for that can run through the mounting holes. The problem, then, is how to make your way in for the other two functions. Particularly the gear driving the turntable you generally want to be in the same place.

They did that back in the 90s. There's not just the risk of cutting too short, but sloppy cuts can also cause the hose to tear, requiring you to re-cut a stretch. And there's no telling young you will do it right the second time around. Really, I'd say the problem with hose is that it's nowhere near as easy to find substitute as it is for thread.

There's something to that. I hadn't considered that the original worked that way. -

My thinking is to hide the LA below the upper deck, and use a set of rear supports which are fixed at the bottom, but linked to the LA at the top. Quick POC: Obviously the black guide axles would need to be supported at both the back and the front.
