I have built this crane in the past. http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=304058

I don't know if this is the place to ask, but does involve this set. I know they are making only 20,000 sets which makes it limited production, but how limited? Roughly how many 8110, 8258, etc sets do they make in comparison? 100k, 1 mil, 10 mil?

RM8, do you have any side by side pics with your original design? Maybe showing the changes that had to be made, etc? That is, if Lego allows you to. I'm really hoping to get my hands on this set, but if not, I will be making a black version for my existing set.

Garbage Truck Flagship
gmshades replied to Kumbbl's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I agree with a Fire Truck. I think kids would love a ladder truck. And it could have many functions: steering, v8 motor, stabilizers, raise/lower ladder, extend ladder, swing ladder. -
Sets with pieces missing
gmshades replied to Lakop's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I hate the feeing I was missing a piece, only to find out I put the piece I was missing in the wrong spot! Only problem I ever had with a set was the 1st Mindstorms. Two motors didn't work right so they sent me 2 more at no charge. -
I have a silly question for ya. Is there a B model? All kidding aside, great looking set and I envy you for being able to work with the Lego design team. That alone is worth more than anything else that came with the winning design.

Lego Technic 2h 2013
gmshades replied to sama's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
It would be cool to see how the crane extends with the pneumatics on the 42008.- 902 replies

Effermans Cranes
gmshades replied to efferman's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Efferman,' I added your claw arm design to my log truck. Works great! Since I have removed the battery box, the claw fits perfect behind the cab. I only have 1 minor problem - the arm is over the HOG steering. Now I have that to tackle. -
Lego Technic 2h 2013
gmshades replied to sama's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Well, the 8109 Flatbed truck was $100. Only came with a battery box, 1 m motor, and some black panels. 42008 Service truck comes with battery box, L motor, 1 large actuator, 2 small actuators, pump, 2 valves, 2 small pneumatic cylinders, and only cost $30 more. A heck of a deal if you ask me.- 902 replies

Lego Technic 2h 2013
gmshades replied to sama's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I use the wheels off of 8071 Bucket Truck for front wheels. Using the wheels they have on the back are like "super singles" we use in the states in place of true duels. So in a way they are a better solution than running singles on the larger trucks like the log truck. Wish they would make wider wheels in the larger scale.- 902 replies

Lego Technic 2h 2013
gmshades replied to sama's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
To answer your first quote, pneumatics will never act like the real thing of hydraulics because air compresses, oil does not. And your problem with too many wheels, pm me and I'll send you money for shipping them to my house. Haha. I'm starting to save $20/week and hopefully have enough for the crane and service truck in August. Both are a must buy for me.- 902 replies

Hello fellow builders. I'm coming over here from the Technic side for some advise. I am a truck driver for Knight Transportation in the US. My truck looks just like the Lego 3221 and 7848 trucks since they look like a Volvo. I want to make a truck to look like the real thing. Since I am mostly into Technic, I have no experience with the Lego Town system when making orders from Bricklink. I have learned to make a wanted list, and start with the rare parts and make orders from there. My question is what parts that make up the 3221 and/or 7848 trucks will be the hardest to come by to make a red truck and white trailer? I plan to use a seller on Ebay for custom Knight decals to complete the look. Will post pics when it's done. Thanks for your help in advance! Glenn

I guess I was in the wrong then for starting this topic. I just wanted to point out that there are people on this forum that complain about the same thing over and over, and have to point it out in every single post their complaint. I would love to see someone make a few of the latest Technic sets with only pneumatics as they always say it would be better with. I enjoy coming on this forum sharing and looking at mocs people have made for inspiration and shear awe. But the negativity is pushing me away. I have already blocked a couple users, and maybe with this I can enjoy this forum again.

No video yet. I will see what I can do next weekend. Thanks to the 20-12 gear increase, the movements work quickly, but at the same time smooth enough for playtime and best of all, they didn't slip! I do have tan gears, just didn't have enough to make the gearbox without taking my other mocs apart. Next bricklink order will include more gears.

So many people on this forum complain that if Lego uses pneumatics, they should have used actuators. If Lego used actuators, they should have used pneumatics. Or, to use or not to use motors in a kit. My solution to these arguements, If you don't like how Lego designed a set, change it, and show it. Then, you will have the set of your dreams, and give others ideas to maybe change their own kit. I have started this with my manual 9397 Log Truck topic because I'm tired of motors taking all the fun out of a set. It's my opinion, not law.

Since this set came out, I have been bummed with the new theme for Lego Technic that all large sets must have electric motors in order to be great. My favorite is still the 8285 Tow Truck from 2006. Great looks, great function, and most of all great playability. So, I decided to change the 9397 Log truck to all manual action. The four functions are still activated under the doors, but now are hand driven. To accomplish this, I switched out the "powered" gear box for the "manual" gear box. In my opinion, it's a lot more fun as I can load the logs faster now than with the motor. Here are a couple pictures: This is my answer to "if you don't like how Lego designed it, change it." Let me know what you think.

Just got my copy tonight with the 10% off coupon from the Lego catalog. Can't wait to start building it. EDIT: I finished building the 42006 this morning. Most of the model is great. The only complaint I have is that the 2nd part of the arm does not close past 90 degrees. So every pickup and drop is from far away. I'm sure I'll be able to modify to my liking.

New 8t gear in portal hubs!
gmshades replied to z3_2drive's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Anyone know why Lego made version 1 of the 8 tooth gear? I can't think of any old school set to have a reason for the 8t to fit inside the hole of the brick. -
8043 vs 8294 vs 42006
gmshades replied to mobi's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I just sold my 8294 to get the 42006. Its in yellow and has 3 individual boom features. 8294 has 2, one of which does the arm and bucket together. Comparing to 8294 or 42006 to the 8043 is like comparing a bicycle to a motorcycle. To take the "engine" out of 8043 would make it pointless, and need to be heavily modified to make it manual.
