I bought this set for the Batwing, but the concept really annoyed me. I don’t know if you can tell. Granted the build would need a shake up, but what an awesome way to bring Black Adam into a Lego set while making a Shazam tie in. Other than a small set with Shazam and Sivana, maybe Freddie Shazam too, and a larger set with the rest of the family and a few Deadly Sins, obviously. No, instead they render not only Batman irrelevant, but the Batwing and the GCPD as well.

You can plot the trajectory of the decline in DC sets incredibly easily, and not being kid friendly is not the catalyst. They went all out on Justice League, which torpedoed itself. They begrudgingly made a set for Aquaman and put a suspiciously cinematic Ocean Master in a comic set. Aquaman was a decent film that performed pretty well. Shazam found himself shoehorned into a typical Batman set, where his presence was laughably overkill in terms of ‘who could help Batman catch the Riddler?’ Shazam too was a decent film that performed pretty well. Oh, and he later turned up in a polybag. Talking of polybags, the thing that really takes the cake with this whole nothing focused on the kids business, is that there have been several Lego DC DTV films made. Lego themselves are partly responsible when they go putting out sets like the mobile Batcave with one new figure and poorly rehashed old ones. The excuse is poor, and all I can say is that it’s saving me money for when they finally pull their heads out of the sand and put something out there that I will happily buy.

Why does everything have to be film-centric? That’s a weak excuse with as much credibility as we just plain forgot how old the theme is. They didn’t have to put out a set, even a retrospective advert would have at least shown that someone was paying attention. I don’t know. Perhaps with the shift in the balance of power Lego might actually present us with a half decent set in the coming years. They haven’t much of an excuse now, based on Mark Stafford’s own words on the subject. “It was COVID’s fault” only carries a certain amount of weight for a certain amount of time. I mean even the flipping Clone Wars got an anniversary.

Yes you can, that's one of the things about a remake. Considering how much of the books didn't make it into the films, I'd say there's plenty of series fodder. It's not really random school nonsense when it's simultaneously driving the plot and building the world. Any actor who goes into a property like this unaware of just how overprotective, gatekeepery and toxic the fandom can be, deserves everything they get. Anyhoo, I'll bow out before this veers any further off topic.

Until such a time as Lego creates a new cowl piece, I propose Bat-Merchant Batgirl’s hood as a stand in. You should never ignore Rasta Batman.

Well I've seen it, liked it a lot, and am currently lamenting the missed Lego opportunities.

I’ll be watching it later tonight so I’ll decide for myself, I’m excited about it because of the subject matter and some of the actors/characters in it. On the other hand, I completely agree with you about the idea of sets. Was this film such a damaging prospect for Lego that it registered a lower score than Angry Birds or Minions 2?

Really nice renders. Some great throw backs to the original line, too. Excellent stuff mate. Multiple Batsuits aside, the Lantern set would be right up my alley. To me that side of DC is such a rich vein and an equally missed opportunity. It's a shame that my DC Lego kick is currently being sustained by MOCs and cheap knock offs from Minifigure Bricks.

Not to pour scorn on Lego set designers, but there's been plenty of sets that were less well thought out than yours, and they would have had more time to finalise them.

You could create all of these sets and manage to avoid the dreaded black suit Batman. Heck, you could create these sets and have a different Batman in each one. These are all sets I would merrily blow my money on, having raised it first obviously. Incidentally how long did it take you to come up with these concepts?

Yep, it's certainly looking that way right now. All the things that remain are either highly popular gross-out (Peacemaker, Harley), have big likeable stars pushing them (Black Adam, Shazam 2), or ties to the Snyderverse (Flash, Aquaman). If there isn't some financial aura around them, or they are historically popular (Batgirl, Timmverse) , then they are on shaky ground. Either we got to have faith it's going to work out or we need to go and buy new mourning suits.

I would love Lego to have a look at the Eaglemoss Batmobile Collection and draw inspiration from it. Throw in some deeper cuts like the Mothmobile or the Catmobile, and I'm away.
