Just an update on 42070’s non working hook raise/lower function. May I suggest you find a comfortable seat because herein lies a tale. I’d suspected the reason for the problem was my less than delicate handling of the build during construction dislodging the 3L axle/8T gear that engages with the diff going through the turntable. I’d had a quick look with the model propped up and could see that the yellow connector was turning but couldn’t see much else. The next day, with torch in mouth, I could see what the problem was and it wasn’t the dislodged gear/axle. I knew this because there was no 8T gear/3L axle. I’m clever like that. After much head scratching and gnashing of teeth… Way back when I first started building this set I remember getting to step 193, putting gear on axle and putting it in place. I gave it a test and it rotated as as it should but when it came to a stop I noticed the 8T gear was split so needed replacing. I removed said gear & axle. But this I'd been building for several hours and was tired so left it to sort out the next day. I'm sure you can work out the rest. Anyway, fast forward a few months. Making use of a lull in the hot weather and a much cooler shed I started removing a ‘few’ parts… … but couldn't remove the final axle holding the turntable assembly in place as the outriggers, retracted or extendend, didn't allow room for my hands and a another axle to push it out. Not wanting to remove the outriggers I’d have to make do with pivoting the assembly up to put the 3L axle/8T gear in place. This seemed like a good idea at the time but when pivoting up the assembly, the vertical 5.5L axle that serves as the cranes rotation stop flipped out of the axle & pin connector securing it and the diff, along with connector and axle, flew out. Bugger. So, to summarise. What we have here is a self made cock up on a scale not seen since Thomas Farriner decided to 'give them another 10 minutes' that’s going to take me almost as long to put right as it took to build the whole thing. Oh well, it’ll keep me busy and if nothing else it gives me an escape from the endless wokedom plaguing the UK. Every cloud… -

Looks like the ride in that and the Mythbusters pickup would be quite similar to that in my Kia Sedona. Especially on a typical UK road -

What a great looking build. You've got a really good eye for design. I too look forward to seeing the video. -

Hi Igor I hope you’re OK. The faulty receiver has been replaced albeit the hard way. Finding one wasn’t a problem as I have plenty. Believe it or not I read the post through before submitting but didn’t notice the larger text. -

Hello My Friends I was hoping to start building the Land Rover Defender (out of box build with the Pimped build to follow later) this week but finishing the 42070 has derailed things somewhat. A (reasonably) quick explanation. As is good practice when building, I checked all functions etc as I went along and happily all worked as they should. However, once the build was finished and I turned the model on, nothing at all worked. Turned out the receiver was faulty which was annoying because changing it meant getting it’s cable out from the rear of the cab etc and the new receiver’s cable back through to the battery box which embarrassingly took a whole afternoon. Yes, I could have just removed the side of the cab and made things a whole lot easier for myself but I didn’t because, well… stupid. Once the receiver was changed I tried again. Steering and drive, fine. Outriggers, fine. Crane rotation and jib raise & lower, fine. Hook raise & lower, not fine. All that happened was the motor whirred. Hmmm… Using Power Puller tyres to prop the right side of the truck at an angle so I could see what was going on within the chassis. I could see the vertical yellow connector below the turntable assembly was turning but there was no movement above it. In my ‘manhandling’ during building I must somehow have managed to dislodge the axle that goes from the top of the connector. Oh dear, says I. As things are at the moment, I’ve removed the crane and am hoping to just remove the diff that sits in the turntable to get at the axle but I don’t think it’ll come out (if any of you know different please do let me know) so may have to remove the turntable etc. With this to do & getting everything back together and with the furnace like weather making my shed far too hot to be in it’s likely to be at least a week before I can start the Defender. I’m really gutted but these things happen. My apologies but normal, and I use normal in its loosest sense, services will resume as soon as is possible. -
This sounds a really interesting project, it’s certainly one I’ll be following. Right after my wallet’s recovered from seeing that first picture.

I couldn’t find any reports of this anywhere which is why I thought it might have been a new part that I’d missed being introduced. It’s obviously a moulding error but as far as I’m aware, when the parts have been moulded they drop into ‘crates’ of individual colours and are stored until needed. There has to be more out here somewhere because if not what are the odds that these two ‘imperfect’ parts end up in the one box. I think I’ll buy a lottery ticket. You know, just in case. -

Thank you Paul. I’ll drop you a WA in the next few days. -
I’m so pleased work has started on Pimping this set. I’ve built the final Pimped versions of both the GT3 and Chiron and thoroughly enjoyed the building process. At least the instructions will be error free unlike TLG’s. I’ll not be buying the set until it comes down to a more realistic price which I’m guessing is a long way off yet. On the upside, at least all the problems will have been sorted out and like all Pimped sets it’ll be a much improved model. Thank you to everyone involved both now and in the future.

I thought it might be something like that but having two parts with identically perfect ‘imperfections’ made me wonder otherwise so thought I’d ask just to be sure. Thank you very much for taking the time to satisfy my curiosity. -

Warning. Contains waffling. Those who expected anything else go to the back of the class! Today I went out to my shed to check everything was OK as I’d not been out there for far more months than I want to think about, I was confronted by a white sheet covering my build table. Turns out Jake, bless him, had been over and covered it while I was in hospital. When the sheet was removed I was surprised to find a mostly built 42070. I’d clean forgotten I’d started it and decided to have an hour or so buildIng. While trying to push an axle into a bush (no, that’s not a euphemism) something happened resulting in the build ending up on it’s side. Sitting there trying to fathom what the heck just happened I noticed that there was something different about the two liftarms (32009] that support the front bulbar. There looked to be ‘indentations’ on the middle section of each one. It’s said a picture saves a thousand words and because by the time I’ve explained things there’ll certainly be far more than that, I took a couple photos. I’m pretty sure the part will turn out to be one that’s completely passed me by and every man and his dog is aware of but I’ve been through all of mine and looked, albeit quickly, on Bricklink etc, reviews & numerous other places and I can’t find this liftarm with these ‘indents’ anywhere. So I’m left wondering, is this a mould fault or something that’s somehow eluded my attention? This is going to drive me nuts so any help would be much appreciated. -

My Dear Friends I hope all’s well with you and your loved ones. I’ve been away for a while now initially because of the problems I was having writing stuff to go with my WIP posts but then health problems caused by couple of dirty great spanner’s thrown in the proverbial works. Now, Mrs Grum and I don’t like spanners, of any size, being thrown in our direction, they disrupt our strange version of normality, so we chucked said spanner’s back from whence they came and got on with the Lazarouesque process of recovery. It’s taken longer than anticipated but I’m pleased to say we’re through the worst and things are going well to the point I can annoy our Daughter in Law almost as much as in better times. OK it has to be by text, video call etc but that doesn’t diminish the enjoyment which just goes to prove that technology is indeed a wonderful thing. Once I’m firing on all cylinders I hope to be able to resume my WIP’s. The Defender, CAT, Sian, Volvo Hauler, BMW M1000, Zetros and the Heavy Duty Tow Truck all sit waiting to be built to be joined by the SP3 once it comes down to a sensible price. I’d also really like to revisit the 8043. All very good incentives to get beck into my shed. Thank you very much for your concern but be assured I’m OK and will be back. -

I built this last year and the only steering problem it had was me. It had several days of hard use chasing the neighbours cats but the cats had the last laugh when I drove it into a wall. -
