[MOC] Midi-scale Naboo and Mandalorian N-1 Starfighters
mcphatty replied to mcphatty's topic in LEGO Star Wars
@SerenityInFire thanks! And I’ve enjoyed collecting mini figures again, posing them around Mocs adds a lot to a picture, I forgot that whilst doing micro stuff. I’ve also resumed work on Dinn’s N-1, here she is so far…- 14 replies

This ship is an old favourite of mine, along with Anakin's Podracer they represent the geeky peak of my youth! Having a go at this in midi-scale was a lot of fun, the ship came together really quickly and going bigger than micro meant being able to explore lots of ways to do the curvy body. It's turned out to be a simple little build that is about 2/3 the length of the last set by Lego and hopefully just as sturdy. I started this one with the cockpit and droid socket area, a pilot can sit inside but it's a tight fit, their arms will have to be touching the controls at exactly the right angle and their hands need to be upside down. I've managed to squeeze in controls and a single instrument along with some seat padding, the pilot will be sitting on the floor which is the plate running along the bottom of the ship. The sides of the ship were the most interesting part of putting this together, getting them connected so they rest in position and don't move was tricky. I have to admit that I stole the engine construction from the 2015 Naboo Starfighter set 75092, the designers have definitely come up with the best method there is and it's a very strong and cheap solution too. Finally, there's a simple and cheap stand to display the starfighter, at a bookshelf-friendly angle. I had the idea for this on the 1st of May and hammered away at it for two days to get it finished for the 4th, there's nothing like leaving your homework until the last minute, right? I am working on a Mandalorian version, making slow progress but I'll have it done at some point. The N-1 is a compact 27.2cm long, 20.8cm wide and weighs about 200g, overall its about 2/3 the size of the 2015 N-1 set. Free instructions are on Rebrickable, I used the most common parts I could to keep the cost down, for the 259 pieces it will cost about £25 but adding a printed droid head will be extra. I finished this one a little while ago and have made a few minor updates to more closely match the build of my Mando version (posted later). Thanks for looking! https://rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-110240/ron_mcphatty/midi-naboo-n-1-starfighter The Mandalorian's N-1 is ready too! More info on a later reply, here's a couple of pictures...

[MOD] Obi-Wan Kenobi's Jedi Starfighter 75333

@Staley I was so pleased with myself for getting that joke in the instructions, good to hear it’s appreciated! -

mcphatty replied to mcphatty's topic in LEGO Star Wars
@Per_SW I'm gonna do exactly that, straight to the mod, never done it before and it feels kind of naughty! @scoiltreasa I've linked the Studio model file in the top post. It needs some work, theres some collisions I only spotted after doing the render and couldn't be bothered to fix, plus all the wedge plates are really expensive. I'll work on the pad and update, but feel free to grab the file and make it your own :) -
[MOD] Obi-Wan Kenobi's Jedi Starfighter 75333
mcphatty replied to mcphatty's topic in LEGO Star Wars
Thanks guys! @TeddytheSpoon actually R4 does still fit inside! Her feet connect to the brackets that hold the centre section together, rather than the jumpers on the original set, so she's going to be harder to pull out but she's still safely stored away under the white wedge piece. -
I started modifying the new set straight away after the press images were published, hashing out some ideas in Studio. I was I inspired long ago by Mr_Idler's amazingly detailed and well proportioned Delta-7 and I've always wanted a little Jedi Starfighter on my shelf, this set presented the perfect opportunity. At first I added a lot of wedge plates to create complicated but fragile slopes around the cockpit, but after getting hold of the original set inventory and recreating it in Studio I managed to rebuild the ship with a lowered cockpit without using any extra pieces at all. Here is the complete mod along with an LED Kamino Landing Pad that I threw together, instructions are on Rebrickable. I've lowered the cockpit area by 2 plates and added a layer to the nose which is now slightly more substantial looking and helps the cockit blend better into the ship. I've made some minor changes to the wings, R4 and the Republic crest are closer to the centre and I also moved the black inverted slopes to the edges of the wings in place of landing gear. The nose of the ship now sits a whole 3 plates lower when landed and the top of the cockpit is 5 plates lower. Rather than towering over the minifigures the ship looks much closer to scale. I've also rearranged the notched-wedge pieces from the tail to create the point over the cockpit canopy, which can't be hinged open but can still be easily removed. The landing pad in the photo above is buildable but the circle shape is slightly illegal, putting the wedge plates under stress, and so the build is hard to pick up once assembled. It is however cheap, compact and compatible with the cheap USB LED kits on eBay consisting of a string of six 1x4 plates. The landing pad instructions and Studio model (use this for parts list) are in a seperate zip file on my 75333 mod Rebrickable page. Thanks and I hope you like the mod!

@obijon I read that too and watched a few videos of people pulling pins out of minifigure heads, but none from droids. There is an extra black part inside the droid head which must hold the pin and body together, I couldn’t get the head off after removing the pin but I don’t know if the black part is any stronger than the minifigure keyring core.

R7-A7, Ahsoka’s droid from The Clone Wars. After watching S7 again I had a look for this guy and my jaw dropped at the price of the 2009 minifigure. Luckily there’s also a keyring, which I picked up for £3 and used a soldering iron to heat up and remove the pin. I did a poor job though and slightly melted the top stud, so here’s my effort at repairing the damage using the open stud from a 1x2 rounded plate and a drop of Revell kit model glue. First I removed the old stud with a very sharp pairing knife, then (with some difficulty) cut the donor stud off the rounded plate. With a bit of shaving to get the surfaces as flat as possible I used the glue to melt the donor piece and droid head together, with some pressure the joint became almost seamless. After the glue dried I noticed the top of the donor piece was no longer glossy, probably the pressure (using a knife) left some texture and made the surface matte, but the overall result is great for a used figure and a £3 investment.

@SillySeeker I like the idea of making it a brick taller, might give that a try in Studio! And yeah more custom canopy and windscreen pieces will always be welcome, there's a new pointy type in one of the new Lightyear sets that will perfect for an X-Wing. I've just updated the Rebrickable page with some bits and pieces. I've improved the connection of the doors and the shape of the wing bubbles but left the rest of the gunship as it is... apart from a few new colour schemes and some Attack of The Clones style pivoting bubble turrets! Here's a render, the 501st colours are based around Bruxxy's design for his blue and grey playscale gunship, the Muunilinst colours are fairly simple but the best I could do without the cost spiralling out of control and messing with the structure. I've got the parts for a 501st colour swap so as soon as I get a chance I'll take some photos.

@Gray Gear Thank you! The guns are a bit of a cheat, the grey bricks are 2x2 Round Dome Bottoms in flat silver (part 15395) connected to a 2L Bar With Towball. At the front of the gunship the whole thing can be wiggled around without the ball joint being easily seen so that little feature worked out pretty well… unfortunately at the back it’s not so well hidden.

@MaximillianRebo thanks. The door isn’t the strongest and relies on the tolerance of a 1x1 brick rotating slightly to let the liftarm move, but I’m glad I got it to work. @Jerac Cheers! It really was all about shelf space for me, this and my Ghost are as small as I think I can make them while squeezing in the minifigures. It’s definitely okay to be played with, my daughters handled it fairly roughly and nothing fell off… until one tried make the wings flap.

UPDATED TO v2.0 I've wanted an LAAT of my own for a long time, I missed the opportunity to get one of the Lego sets during my dark-ages and have absolutely nowhere to put a UCS sized pile of plastic, so I thought I'd continue the midi-scale thing and try to make something bookshelf friendly. This isn't intended to be any particular scale, just roughly the same size as the midi-sized Slave 1 (75312) with room for figures and strong enough to be played with. The cockpit bubble looks oversized and there’s obviously only one of them so I had to throw accuracy to the wind there, but I’ve squeezed in as many other recognisable details as I could. The roof opens up to allow access to the cockpit which has just enough room for two Clone Troopers/Pilots to get cozy. There’s a small weapons locker in the area between the front hatches, though it' mostly for decoration as its very hard to acces, and the side doors hinge outwards and fold back so that four Clones can be seated inside. There isn't enough headroom to have them hanging by a handrail but some fearless perching before deployment is definitely doable. Finally I squeezed a stupidly small BARC speeder up the back end of the ship. Overall the Republic Gunship is a 28cm long (including the guns), 27cm wide and weighs 410g. Instructions are on Rebrickable, I've only used common and cheap parts so the whole MOC with stand will cost around £35 for the 603 pieces. https://rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-107732/ron_mcphatty/midi-republic-gunship And here's my other midi-scale efforts.

Mate this is fantastic, just thought I'd have another look at your photos on my desktop and seeing the ship on a big screen has blown me away again! There's some beautiful areas where shapes meet, like the whole of the bridge tower and the longest engines, you've managed to make the ship look massive with all the greebling and I really like the dark red panels down the centre, even the slightly innacurate tiny gap between them and the top surface adds some genuinely worthwhile texture to the ship. Simply awesome and its the perfect size! Long may the midi-scale rennaisance continue.

The Rogue Shadow MOC with full interior - instructions now available
mcphatty replied to Evilkirk's topic in LEGO Star Wars
I absolutely love this build, the photo of you holding it is truly special! Interiors are usually so cramped in lego ships, it’s amazing to see something so spacious and properly scaled to the figures. Great job and congrats on finishing the instructions :)- 13 replies

[MOC] Midi-scale Ghost & Phantom from Star Wars Rebels
mcphatty replied to mcphatty's topic in LEGO Star Wars
Just thought I’d share another midi-scale ship on here, since I don’t think I’ll have time to take photos for another week. It’s about 27cm long (22 without the guns), 560 pieces and costs about £40, all parts are common. I’ve tried to make it solid enough to be played with and has a few play features like opening doors, space for 6 figures and a very tiny BARC speeder! Instructions are on Rebrickable… https://rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-107732/ron_mcphatty/midi-republic-gunship -
[MOC] Midi-scale Ghost & Phantom from Star Wars Rebels
mcphatty replied to mcphatty's topic in LEGO Star Wars
@Bricktastrophe thanks! I’ll upload more pictures hopefully this week to show you the inside, there’s space for Chopper either in the Phantom (a section pulls out) or in the cargo bay. @khatmorg yeah the sloping areas aren’t great, I’ll work on filling those gaps. And me too, the more midi ships we get the better. -
I really like the 75312 Slave 1 set, it's a wonderfully compact set and a really fun and interesting build, and it got me thinking about doing a midi-scale ship of my own. Last year I scratched tried a few ways to display my Rebels figures with my micro Ghost but had limited success with box photo frames, so I decided to have a go at a midi Ghost to go on my shelf next to Slave 1. Using Studio I started this Ghost to fit around Hera, Ezra and Zeb, using the rounded and bubble canopies early on to fully enclose them. I tried to make the rest of the ship as small as possible without being too strict with proportions, the engines and cockpit look slightly oversized but hopefully in a cute, cartoonish kind of way. The interior space is very limited but all the crew fit inside and the build is extremely strong, grabbable by small hands and surprisingly good for swooshing around! I've included both the Phantoms roughly in proportion to the rest of the ship, they appear whole but have a removable sections to become like microfighters for Chopper. Overall the Ghost is a 27cm long, 21cm wide and weighs 695g. I've put together some instructions on Rebrickable, all the parts are common and with both Phantoms and a stand the cost is about £85 for 953 pieces. https://rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-100661/ron_mcphatty/midi-ghost-phantom And just to give you a sense of the size here she is next to Slave 1… Edited to add new photos. I hope you enjoy this little build, it was a lot of fun to work on!

Sorry about the title, I was banking on ‘N1’ being a niche enough reference that anyone who hadn’t seen the episode wouldn’t get it, I’ve edited as suggested now. @azanderk Star Wars is littered with heavily modified ships but I think you might be right, the Falcon is the only mainstream one, maybe the Ghost from Rebels too since that was modified for stealth. From old Legends comics, games and books there’s also ‘uglies’ and TIE Experimental fighters, which were standard fighters modified in unusual ways, looking them up will kill a few hours :) @LDigital That version by M2M was probably one of the first. I spotted it on Reddit, there’s so many now, it’s truly amazing how this ship has inspired so much creativity, I love it! Here’s M2M’s plus lots of other good quality versions from Reddit, some cheating with silver renders and paint but they still look excellent.

Morning all. Yesterday a lot of people got very excited about Mando’s new ride, I’ve never seen so many MOCs of a new ship pop up so fast. Its an extremely cool little fighter and I’ve really enjoyed seeing the different ideas and techniques that have gone into the MOCs so I thought I’d start a thread for us to share our favourites or our own attempts. My favourite so far is by @azanderk. It’s a reworking of LLep’s version of the N1, the details are brilliant. Here’s my micro version, using a few less pieces.
-
Great work, that’s a nice little Trench Run display you’ve got going. Definitely needs more greebling but it’s a very nice start. I like your Falcon too, nice design!

Yeah my Blockade Runner MOC and the Tantive IV set are almost the same size! I’ve gone for detail over space to fit minifigures but the ship is still pretty strong. And yes, I think I first posted those TIEs about 18 months ago, I’m glad you found them useful :) Have you got a link to your micro trench run? I’ve seen your play set scale one (very good by the way) but not the micro version.

Hi all. I haven't added much to my 1:250 fleet of Star Wars fighters, gunships, freighters and one corvette (plus a couple of mini scenes) this year but I have been working on my photography. I've really enjoyed seeing the groups of ships grow and comparing the sizes of the finished products, Slave 1 and the Rogue Shadow turned out surprisingly big, but the biggest surprise was how huge a Blockade Runner is! In case anyone's interested, instructions for all of them are on Rebrickable... https://rebrickable.com/users/ron_mcphatty/mocs/ And here's another with almost all the ships arranged together, which took far, far longer than I thought it would!

@macaron35 Sorry for the slow reply! Most of my sets are in storage and I haven't had the time to grab an X-Wing or TIE for a photo, but hopefully these pictures will give you an idea of the size. It's almost the same length as set as the 2019 Tantive so any pictures you can find of that set with other fighters will help too.
