Technic 2019 Set Discussion
iLego replied to dimaks13's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Motors driving wheels directly are unrealistic for conventional cars, but this may very well be the setup for electric cars ? -
Imagine getting into your car tomorrow morning and finding that the steering, brake, and accelerator have been replaced with a touch screen. Will you be able to drive effectively ? Now imagine further that the touch screen stops working whenever someone calls you. A lot of phone based video games use a touch screen, so the mechanism will work for Lego as well. But a real joystick based remote will be more fun and effective. Lego's motto is to create only the best, and to be honest they do a great job most of the time. But this is a case where they are taking the wrong direction in my opinion. Some of us can indeed build our own remotes using the published Bluetooth protocol. But it's often not that easy to make a robust mechanism at home. I built a proportional PF remote using Arduino with open source library for sending PF commands. But the mechanism did not work very well because the variable resistance joystick I used turned out to be poor quality and the IR LED was a low intensity one so the remote's range was really short. Of course it's possible Lego may yet surprise us and release a remote like they have done for the train sets ... but I really have my doubts.

None of the RC hobby toys use smartphone as a controller. And this includes complex machines like airplanes, helicopters, construction machinery etc. The reason of course is that the physical remotes provide better control. I wish Lego provide a simple proportional remote with joysticks. Current PF remote has two joysticks, perhaps they can bump it up to 4 joysticks for the control+ remote. The joysticks themselves could be attachable (similar to how we can attach an axle to current PF switch) to avoid confusion on models which need less than 4 controls. I think Lego would have provided greater joy if they had come out with a proportional version of current PF remote. For years, they refused to invest in this obvious need, and we thought all this while that Technic was not mainstream enough for this to make business sense for Lego. But now they have suddenly come out with huge investments in electronics via boost, pup and control+. It's all confusing to me.

42100 - Still a toy?
iLego replied to nerdsforprez's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I think it's rather simple. If you feel guilty buying it, consciously or subconsciously, then it's a toy -

Very cool !! I love that you put the XL motors inside the tracks. Great idea. Simple and elegant design. -
Sorry for continuing the off topic. I had built one of PV Productions' GBC based of 42042. It was very flaky and hardly worked, though the overall design was quite ingenious. My son and I did have fun building it and appreciating the clever parts reuse, but the final GBC was a disappointment in the sense it would not work reliably. So my sense of these GBCs is that they ilustrate the possibilities and potential, but they are not something you would want to put in a GBC display. They are fun for "amateurs" nevertheless, since the parts come from a single set.

We have been discussing some of Cada sets here, and some people feel that they are "ok" since they are not copies of Lego sets. But the parts they use are almost same as Technic, i.e. the parts are direct copies. Does that make them illegal ? Or perhaps unethical ? I am not sure ... things are complicated because these topics tend to be subjective.

GBC General Discussion
iLego replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I have a rather general question on GBCs. They often have multiple mechanisms which work relative to each other and the synchronization between them is via gears. Now, if there is even the slightest jam, the gears can jump teeth and then the whole synchronization is lost. What is the right way to deal with this ? Should there never ever be any jams ? Should the design be such that the gears are easily accessible so that it's easy to recalibrate the mechanisms without ripping things apart ? Something else ? Perhaps another option is to not rely too much on calibration. Instead have each mechanism trigger the next one, so their relative timing is not so important. I am finding that making any GBC work reliably is a huge challenge. Even in the smallest GBCs, the balls seem to have a mind of their own and they do their own thing if the GBC runs for a long time. Often, the cool YouTube videos are somewhat misleading, since they simply show a time period when balls were cooperative- 1,124 replies

This is so cool ! When all movements are done simultaneously, it will look really natural. Looking forward to the video. -

Perhaps you could make the first "not smooth" track work if the train wheels were "grabbing" the rails using a rubber band or Technic suspension spring ?- 44 replies

What if the wheel (or rather rim) size is kept same but we use the bigger tyre from 42000 ? -

iLego replied to KevinMoo's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Now that this topic has anyway been bumped, I can ask a couple of questions with less guilt. It looks like power to the rear differential is going directly instead of going through the middle differential. Why is it done this way ? Is it to support independent suspension between the two sets of wheels ? Also, what exactly is the purpose of these parts: I have not seen the parts in real life, so was unable to get a feel for them. -
Technic General Discussion
iLego replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Glad to see Technic invading into other themes as TLG tries to make things more functional. This modular set has the Technic suspension arm being used as a tow arm for a city scale truck. Also uses this Technic piece which has ironically not appeared in Technic sets so far. -

This is so cool ! It looks simple enough at first glance, but when I look carefully, I can see so many small details which add up to make the whole thing work. I really admire the skills needed to make these working Technic contraptions.
