Lol, good point. And now, think about what he should lose if he wants to be captain! Haha

I prefer TBB, but not by much. As you've been saying, the design is better, mostly because of the childish style of BBB. I would add that BBB seems a little "naked". I mean, it's the platform and few accessories and details added. Said this, I must say that both ships are nice.

Outstanding review. And I like very much the set. The shipwreck itself could be better, but the figs and the accessories are veeery cool.

Well, first of all, thank you for that awesome review. Nevertheless, in mi opinion you've been too hard on your conclusions. I mean, this ship deserves more than a 5/10. I agree with your criticisms and I also see the flaws that you mentioned (the half-printed sail, awful), but I think that you forgot some of the good points of this set. And don't get me wrong: I'm 27 and I grew with our old and beloved Classic Pirates. For exemple, the figures. To me, absolutely awesome. The Pirates side, we've got our Roger back in the purest way. And look at the crew, very different and original. And the soldiers! Man, we've got a soldier, an officer and an admiral. Having such a complete army in a pirate ship, we've never seen that before! And about the ship. It's better than any pirate ship since 1993. I'm serious: better that 6289 (1996), better than BBB, and better than any of the POTC ships. It's more detailed, more realistic. It has some flaws, but it also has good and new details that represent much better the life on board. Theses accessories didn't exist in the 90s, we must reckon this. And, hell, Pirates are back! Giving all of this, less than a 7/10 is unfair to me. But more than an 8 would be exaggerate. @cervantes, I understand you. I think that we all miss that early 90s but man, it's not true that the ships are getting worse. It's true that this ship is worse than BSB and SES, but is also true that it's better than 1996, 2009 and POTC. So, the evolution is like a U. We've passed the worst.

I rescue this thread from the past, hope that the administrators will agree... I did it because, maybe, we can add some scans from the Lego Maniac magazines, etc. As you explained, all this catalogs were almost a "religion" to me. I spent hundreds of hours watching them, and even drawing them. In fact, I'm still keeping the catalog every year since 1993, but I have catalogs from 1989.

I don't expect something extraordinary, so hardly I will be disappointed. Take my advice. You won't see a Pirates line like the early 90s. Forget about it. So... according with the images that we've seen and the sentences above, it doesn't look bad. The sets are quite simple, like the 2009 wave, but the minifigs and the accessories look very well. And despite this simplicity in the sets and structures, it seems that this 2005 wave is a real tribute to the old classic pirates. And we have'nt seen yet the rest of the sets. Being realistic, and knowing that the old Pirates from the 90s won't come again, I think that maybe we'll have some very interesting new sets. And we'll see if the bluecoats will be given a decent ship. If not, it would be a terrible mistake. The same error happened in 2009, but it was "corrected" with the awesome Imperial Flagship: Lego closed the last Pirates wave with a BANG!.

Why the Pirates theme disappeared in 1998?

Absolutely agree. -
You're right, I'll try but it won't be easy, don't forget that I only want to use the pieces from the set!

Fake LEGO pirates : general discussion

Agree. And that makes this sets absurd, ridiculous... can't find the words. -
Hi! I present to you The Soldier's Fort 2.0. This MOC is in fact an alternate model from 6242 "Soldier's Fort". Let me explain some characteristics about it: - I always agreed with our friend and user in this forums Steve, who imagined a typical fort when he heared for a first time about the 6242. I really love that set but to be honest, it is not a fort, it is a harbor. I missed a defensive building for the Imperial Guards in the 2009-2010 wave. - As you can see, I maintained the structures from the original set, but I changed totally the design to create a closed fort. - I only used the original pieces from the original set. I only added some complements (minifigs and accessories) but the structure is 100% from the 6242. - I wanted to use the original little blue base plates to form a 26x24 surface for the reason above, but use one base plate if you have it, it will be more stable. - I completed the Fort with some minifigs and the sets 8396 Soldier's Arsenal, and 6239 Cannon Battle. - Try to add another cannon under the blue roof, you will have all your flanks covered! Thank you very much, I hope I have given some ideas for you!

Lego 6286 Skull's Eye Schooner....Finally! :)
Captain Fortune replied to VintageLegoEra's topic in LEGO Pirates
Congrats, buddy. I had this ship when i was 10 years old, I found it in a shop in 1999 after years of research. For me, the Skull's Eye Schooner always was and will be THE SHIP. That's all. -
The vikings are not pirates, that's why. It's an historical evidence.

Fake LEGO pirates : general discussion

My opinion about this sets? One word: Awful. -
Let me speak about something. Probably the user didn't mean something bad about the Islanders. I don't know, but perhaps some people could think that yes, the Islanders seem disguised childs on a carnival if we compare it with this new minifigs. But let me make me clear: the purpose of the minifigs of Lego was never to be an accurated image to the real people. The minifigs are representations of the reality, nothing more, nothing less. If Lego had wanted realistic minifigs, it would not design them like this. The old Islanders had all that we need in Lego: A "free" representation of an exotic tribe from de Polynesian islands. The rest is up to you. On the contrary, this new minifigs are limited. Speaking in general, the Islanders had several sets with very different situations and possibilities, yet this tribes have nothing but one set and two minifigs. I didn't write this post against anyone. It's only a though that I wanted to share with you. I don't like some licensed themes for these kind of reasons. Specially POTC.

I understand it perfectly, but still the set sucks.
-
Absolutely agree, I don't deny it! Look at what I said at first: awesome! Whem I said simple and basic, I ment that we can notice the lack of special pieces and accessories if we compare it with de 2009-10 sets. That's all. It's not only about this set. It's just that Lego didn't have the same variety of pieces at that time, all the themes. But the entire design of the Sabre Island is awesome, as well as the minifigs.
-
I don't like it. It's nothing personal, you made a good job with your review. But I don't like the set, in fact I don't consider it a part of Pirates theme. There are useful pieces and accessories, but for me the rest is useless. I don't think I'm the only person with that opinion.

I had exactly the same feelings. My parents bought me that ship when I was 9, and the more time I had it, the more I liked it. In fact, I recognize that still now I like it very much. This ship has a lot of ununderstandable mistakes, but the global image is good, it's powerful. The 1996-97 wave wast not good at all, but the 6289 is not the worst part of it. Flaws like the lack of decent bases for the pirates and the Armada (and only two sets for the spanish, absolutely stupid!), and the silly designs in some sets are the most important reasons, I think.
-
Awesome set, and good memories! However, I find it too basic, too simple. Probably my point of view has changed because of those new sets, full of details and special pieces.

Thank you! And about the labtop: Sony Vaio Intel Core i5-3337U.

Imperial Flagship Modifications (10210)
Captain Fortune replied to Lord Valgor's topic in LEGO Pirates
Very, very, very good mods. The only things that I don't like are these soldiers without their muskets. -
Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you... the General. You can think that he's George Washington himself. But maybe he's an other general from the Continental Army (US), or a french Maréchal. So what did I use to build our little big man from the 18th Century? The most important element: the wig, from the revolutionary soldier (Minifigs series). The golden epaulettes, from the Captain Brickbeard. If you don't have them, try with the red ones. They look well also. The new governor's torso. What an elegant and accurate torso... awesome! Use a serious or worried face, and shaved. Don't forget that here we're talking about a Gentleman. The tricorn in his hands, and white pants. The acessories: His sable, the plume to write his notes, the map, the magnifying glass, the telescope... All the items that a good general needed in the 18th Century! Optional: the white horse. Love this new horses! And for our British and Redcoat fans, try with the Governor Broadside's torso. Unfortunately we don't have a new one, but look at the pic, it looks nice! I recommend to use blue epaulettes, and try with the old bicorn, very elegant! It's simple, but nice. Hope I have given some ideas for your Army!

LEGO Minifigure Series 11 - Island Warrior
Captain Fortune replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
Not bad, but there is nothing like the old Islanders. -
Thank you very much for the review, specially for the photos of the papers, wich unfortunately I could never see here in Europe.

It looks great!
