Not really a compelling reason to bite the hand that feeds us all... I agree completely.

are you allowed to drop hints of good it is, or is feedback zero until the 1st?

I'm not jealous.. much. Looking forward to seeing the review and pics of the build process... when roughly do you think you'll have a review posted?

Complexity is an excellent additional metric. And for all i agree its a personal judgement call on the function part ratio, it still should be quantifiable to at least some degree... I agree completely about BWE, but its part count to piece ratio is worse than 42082.. it gains on originality, so maybe that offsets the function count.

This is something mentioned a few times... but to coin a phrase, its meaningless generalisation. For it stand up as an argument you need to quantify an acceptable function-to-part-count ratio. Its easy to generalise, which is why a poor debating tool. Howmany functions has BWE got for example.. more than 42082? probably not.. (drive, slewing, conveyor, arm raise lower..) vs (boom raise, extend, hook lower, stabilisers, steering, 4wd) Looks to be less and no one mentions the Golden Ratio when discussing it... or Chiron. Steering, engine, gearbox, suspension. Big part count, BIIIIIG price tag, but again no one really jumps on the part count ratio... so why is 42082 in the Golden Ratio spotlight? Obviously my function count was just off the top of my head when typing, but rather generalise meaninglessly, why not do an actual facts based assessment and see what the reality is? For transparency, i love 42082. If it was a 4k piece empty box, i wouldn't.. but it isn't.

I'm not sure why big is bad? Function count to size ratio isn't a critical factor for me, maybe if it was an empty shell, but it isn't... in fact if they offered two crane's, both with the same functions and one as small as possible and one monster at 4000 pieces, i'd buy the monster every time. Maybe there should be a c model competition to see who can make it the smallest!! But for me, too much is never enough.. There's rule for life, right there!!

or maybe the bearing arrangement caused grip/slip friction? Still love it and can't wait to get it.

I'm with you now! its the boom angle causing the LA's to rotate around their driving axis and effectively extending one and retracting the other... course. Thanks for that!!

LA's... still not following why the load is on one. Could be just me.. but if they're both 'aligned' to the same length to start with, then aside from slop in the gears, they'll extend at the same rate and share the load. if they start aligned, they'll stay aligned....?

Yea, for me too... i must be missing something? Overall, i was already looking forward to this set. That video has doubled that!! Looks awesome. Also, there does seem to be a bearing cage inside the turntables, there's some yellow in there rotating at half-speed

i've currently got one in use in a diff-lock situation using old red 2L driving rings on a smooth 2L axle connector - works perfectly. Worth noting though, that the orange selector needs to be 0.5l offset when using old 2L rings, but as lego thoughtfully provide 0.5L bushes, its drama free!! And it does make diff-lock a lot neater. And it can't 'unlock' as its effectively trying to drive a worm gear backwards, which as we all know, it can't... so difflock stays locked even when torqued up.

On a slight tangent (apologies).. spoke to customer services today about my order for the spiral gearbox selector and new 20 tooth clutch gears.. and the lady i spoke to was the most helpful person in the world. A real credit to TLG. -

Thats true, but i still That is absolutely true, and there's a great truth hidden in that sentence - we have so much material! So many great sets. And for me thats such a positive! The occasional sketchy function is incidental to me.. but i know its not for everyone. I guess its whether you view Technic as Cattle or a Pet. When cattle goes wrong you shoot it and get a different one. But a pet, you stick with and take it to the vets. Or if it pees on the carpet you forgive it, cos its your pet. Lego for me is a pet, so i can live with the occasional wet patch on the carpet or ruined curtains!!! -

There's one area i seem to differ from the comments here, and thats comparisons. When i look at the new flagship, i work off gut instinct - do i want it, does it gives me that same excitement i got when i was 10. It seems quite common to base your opinion of it, by comparing it... its worse than set X, or feature Y isn't as good. I view it on its own merits Technic is a mature product now, so huge leaps become harder, if not impossible. Its more about incremental gains, like new gearbox parts. Not saying that its wrong to compare, and i guess we all want to see technic move forward, but for me, i see 42082 and WANT IT!! (and if it has some new gearbox parts in it too, great. if it does something special with bearings in the ring gears, better still..) My primary reaction though is from the 10 yr old that still thrives inside me (i'm proud to say, at 46!). Basically i'm 10, but with a bigger budget! And as mentioned before, i'm a sucker for a big set.. i love a huge part count! Bring on 42082, it will stay built for 3 or 4 days. I've got plans for those parts, and its not as a display model!! (porsche last 2 days before it got 4wd and a central diff... and a mid mounted engine....) -

Think that was me, or at least i said something similar - and i think this is a key point. You see a set and either think... a) thats great, but wouldn't it better i changed that or added this! Can't wait to get it and start!! b) i'd buy it but that bits not right, don't like that colour, what were they thinking. I want perfection for my dollar spend! The (b) voices are often loudest unfortunately. @Jim 's long post was excellent. TLG do an amazing job... and they are only human, and maybe sometimes the negative stuff isn't nice for them to read. Perhaps praising them more would good. -
In society in general, i agree, but not really on here @Maaboo35 totally agree. (and not just to avoid an argument!) "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

This forum is fine as @Lipko just mentioned... heavy handed draconian sanitization isn't an answer. Society is full of hyper sensitive people being offended on someone elses behalf, and all that massive PC crap will be the downfall of civilisation as no-one dare say anything just in case it upsets someone... Winston Smith thought he had it bad. Let people talk, and maybe bicker, but i've seldom seen anything worse on here. Imposing THE RULE on everyone is not the answer. Especially on a friendly forum like this one.

...if this was a vote, it feels about 75% 'Yes, they're doing a good job'.. i've not counted, so could be wrong. Just gut feeling. -

Tend to agree with this, though i'm fine with structure... 42055 is virtually all structure and was a great build. Decoration doesn't interest me really - building the Porsche body bored me, but loved the chassis. But others really enjoy that, so thats good - we all appreciate different things. I am a sucker for high part count/bigger models, i can't lie.. i love BIG! Sorry, i think i'm in the minority there. The best balance for me so far has been the Arocs, good size, no empty space, everything on it had a technical role - some decoration, but not too much. But you can't expect that every year, you need to look at the longer term trend - climate, not the weather - and the technic climate is an improving picture, despite the odd blip. -

I agree with everything @Jim has just written. My first phase was 1980 - 1988, then i returned in 2009 with 8258. WOW!! It blew my mind how much it had moved on in the 20 year gap, and each year there's something that does that to me again.. Its not about B-model perfection, or even A model perfection. Its more than that, its the collective whole... the official sets, the new parts, the implementation.. 42082 appears to use a bearing between the ring gears... not seen that on a moc. They've planted a seed right there, a new idea that people can pick up and run with. The official set is great for newbies to learn how it all works, like i had to again in 2009, and its great for the rest of us to see new ideas on 'offical mocs'(!).. but i'm primarily a moc-er, i love building the sets, but once built, take it to bits and build that next idea, so maybe thats why i'm not so fussed about B models.. From my 'seasoned' perspective Lego are doing a brilliant job. They deliver more large sets per year than ever (i think?), and there are new parts to inspire... suits me just fine!! "Everything was better when everything was worse..." -
Exactly.. a bit less stressed-out than my reply!!! Ha! but the same sentiment.. i think
