Well.... i said it needed to be more than just a pretty shell. And it is. I doubted it, but i'm happy to admit i was wrong. Those new parts are awesome. And the 20t is blue which is better still. Well done TLG!! I am a convert ... (need those parts without paying £300!!) that diff looks different... the none crown wheel side looks thicker... or am i imagining it? -
Exactly... I started with technic is 1979.. had a decent dark ages of about 15 years, but have been back for 10 or 12, and even in the dark ages i often thought about it and looked at new sets... Its been part of me for so long, it will never go away. I might not have time or motivation for potentially a few months, but its always there. I have several other time consuming hobbies and priorities ebb and flow, but lego takes its turn at the top. Mainly in winter when outdoor stuff is restricted.

I am a member of Team Illegal () so i am often confused by what is and isn't considered legal... but how is wrapping a part in cotton etc legal? Now don't get me wrong, i'd use the brass ones tomorrow as i'm not a purist by any stretch, but it does seem odd that from a purists perspective, wrapping it in something is ok? Not being argumentative, and its a fairly light hearted question, but it does confuse me... Anyway, i love the modification to the brass ones. How long does it take to do each one? Is the working angle as good as Lego's? I'm looking at using the metal axles that are available as i've got some BIG tractor tyres that twist lego axles something terrible.. those plus brass UJ's on the front axles would see me with a lot of torque/pulling power..!!!!!

@zux i'm exactly the same... sometimes i don't touch lego for a few weeks even months. not because i don't enjoy it, its just that other things take my attention. Recently i've been doing a lot of mechanical work on a couple of vehicles i own. Not unlike technic lego in many ways!! But thats kept me busy (and i enjoy it).. over that time an idea for a moc came to mind. I'll probably get round to starting it in a month or so. I don't think its a darkage, its just as you get older you get more interests and your time needs to cover them all.. @Cumulonimbus I wouldn't worry about it.. do other stuff, its not compulsory after all! Then one day in a month or 2, that idea will seep in and you'll start mentally planning it... next thing you'll be hunting for that elusive vital part!! There are many people with no hobbies... we're lucky. we have lego plus others. I'd rather have too many and not enough time, than have none.

If the model has wheels, you have to start with those as they're pretty fixed... choose the lego one's you want to use, that sets your scale. I never use any tools, just a calculator and a ruler! I know things change, and i started with technic in 1979 and i've always built sets once then immediately take them apart and just moc, moc and more moc. i've always been a seat-of-the-pants builder.. never plan, or try it in LDD etc. Build it, change it, change it again. repeat * 100!! Except for the wheelbase/length/width/height... i know what they need to be. And i always choose the biggest scale (wheels) possible, as i like big!!! Others will have different ways for sure, for me the fun is in the trial and error and experimentation. I think the only set i've ever built twice was my first, 853, other people build for display etc... as i said, other people will have other (and possibly better!) ways of achieving an end result, as for me its the journey/messing/trying/failing/experimenting.. once finished, it lasts about 2 days before i take it apart! I'd say just experiment and find the way that works for you

I mentioned too many negative waves a while back... and got people moaning that i'd accused them of being negative! Problem is, what do you do? Shut em down and you've turned a forum into a dictatorship. Let them whine, and they'll fill the thread with it... Anyway, there's always huge knee-jerk reactions to new models often based on minimal evidence, however, most of it is good natured guesses and hopes which is great and i enjoy reading it. Thats all positive excitement, and although another car isn't top of my wishlist, i'm still hoping its something special under its skin - i'd love to be so blown away i actually buy it! (42082 is my winner this year, and passes the 'pure' technic smell test.. this one feels a bit Model Team-y so far, but i hope i'm totally wrong once details emerge) Either way, it blows the socks off what i had when i was 10, so lets have an Amen to that! -

The strength (or otherwise) of this model is whats inside.. this is technic after all. Pretty is great, but form without function is something other than technic.. which is fine, unless its a technic set, which this is. I hope its a technic tour-de-force to reflect the real life machine, if its some basic suspension/gearbox/steering in a pretty blue shell, that would be very disappointing. I soooo hope its the former. Cars aren't my favourite model type, but if its a technic showcase, i'll buy it for sure... (Please don't be form with only basic functions, please don't be form with only basic functions, please don't be form with only basic functions......) -
i'm thinking there has to be a cage of some kind to hold them apart... assuming it really is a bearing between them (and it certainly looks to be). Could be something that runs on the inner teeth, or spokes out from the turntable thats presumably at the centre. I love a mystery... as mentioned above, i hope whatever it is turns out to be elegant/clever. Not that it matters, this set will be mine!!

Great new pic, thanks for sharing, the more i see the more i want it. The 'bearing' between the rings is interesting.. the rollers cage needs to rotate at half-speed. Presuming there is a cage. Looking forward to seeing the solution for that, hope its ingenious! I got 855 for xmas when i was about 10 - it cost £20 which sounded like a massive amount to a 10 yr old me! Some sets stir up the same 10yr old excitement when i see them.. this is one of them. It would be great if chiron is more than just form over function and i know its a popular model already, but this crane it what i'm looking forward to most!!

Absolutely! And i did say it was reason enough for me... not that it should be for everyone. Just think the mood needs to lighten a bit sometimes, that all.. Anyway, its not perfect, but it does make be feel 10 when i see the pics, so it works for me!!

For the pleasure of a big shiny box of new lego. Thats reason enough for me.. it doesn't have to have new pieces and perfect design to mean i want it. I could d/l the instructions for a few of my sets without having to buy them... but thats missing the point. Its a hobby/toy at the end of the day, and is a pleasure in itself. +1 for less negative waves! Buy it, build it, love it.. Just a thought?!

caster wheels transfer the load onto their axle/pin which created friction. a roller bearing just.. rolls .. with no pin or axle so create less friction. in essence its a bearing, where as a castor wheel isn't.

Its interesting reading the analysis of the pics - people spot things on grainy pics i never would, so its good to read the conclusions/assumptions. Its all part of that new set buzz... for me though, i have much simpler process of whether to buy it or not: Does it make me feel 10 yrs old when i see the new pics!!* And this does, no analysis or logical deduction. See pic, get giddy, want it!! (and if its a technical extravaganza, all the better). #JustLoveTechnic (* BWE did, Arocs did, 8258 did.... 8258?! what a set that was!!)

First time i've seen these 'better' pics.. and i like it more and more! Really looking forward to this set. And its red. I'm short of red. Lots of complexity would be the icing on the cake - the piece count is massive, is it an official number?

They're the same size as the Porsche ones though i think, so its a new design but the tyres and all other due diligence will carry over.. so maybe 5% new? I agree though, knowing what TLG's design process is would be interesting. Is it mapped out in great detail, or is it progressive refinement for example. I'm a .net developer and it seems counter intuitive, but progressive refinement is often the better approach... maybe a pile of bricks and experimentation is better than agonising over plans and 3d renders.. that way can be paralysis by analysis. how's it done at Lego HQ?!!
