  1. Thanks. I take my photography seriously as much as LEGO. As for the words, I'm sure there is more room for improvement. Re: size, I think from the movie point of view he is too small if the designers made him a bigfig. The trailer alone shows he is much bigger than Bane so it will be disappointing if they end up being equal in size.
  2. I agree with your conclusion. It's the mixture of dark bluish gray and red parts that messes with my eyes.
  3. Unless you are buying discounted new parts or used parts below average price, I think there is slim chance you're going to get this cheaper than the set. This is the only set I have from TLBM so it's not strange to me.
  4. Can you share which part of the world the components came from? It should be at the back or bottom of the boxes. If you find China there, it's probably packed from China.
  5. Sure. I will post pictures here when I'm done.
  6. I'm in the process of doing this... and I nearly bought 2 sets in order to combine them into 1 enclosed pagoda building. You should only need 2 at most but it's not necessary. I ended up ordering parts in BL. My orders are all coming next week and in another week I will be able to share the modification.
  7. That's true coming from an AFOL but I began getting opinion from my son -- and our opinion vastly differs. I think the play features are "age appropriate" and when you compare it to LEGO City then this is a very good set. As a NINJAGO minifigure collector I give it a high score for trying to appeal to both kids and adults. Btw, thanks for the compliments!
  8. You're right. This is the most logical explanation. Here in my region the Ninjago sets had been delayed until The LEGO Batman Movie is playing in theater to give way for TLBM sets to sell more. One section of a local toy shop was filled with TLBM sets in January and by 1st week of February at least half of the shelf is already allocated to Ninjago and more Star Wars
  9. Thanks! Re: Abs... I think I lost count. I'm sure Batman would not mind having more.
  10. Good to know someone enjoys this set as much as I do!
  11. The stunt does mimic some of Jackie Chan's moves but the fight scene in TLNM with the fridge is much more 'sophisticated'. I also read that Jackie Chan's stunt team did stunts for the movie... and even though it is not motion-capture, I think they use the stunts to guide the animators how tho choreograph the fight scenes.
  12. Thanks. I was about to pick the Riddler Riddle Racer last weekend because it has 5 minifigures... but then again, I don't collect Superheroes so in the end I skipped it. I think you really must love Penguin and vehicles to be able to pick up Arctic Roller because to me, the ONLY interesting part in that set is the folded umbrella. Nowadays I don't pick up sets if I know I won't be able to use the parts for other purposes. I didn't bother comparing the 2 other sets against Clayface but just now I checked that Clayface Splat Attack weighs 523g. Penguin's Arctic Roller and Riddler Riddle Race are just 463g and 407g respectively. So, you're really paying premium to get the exclusive minifigures on those 2 other sets. What this proves is that with enough business justification, TLG can produce parts in new colour regardless of quantities without much impact to the price of the set. Some people might bring up that there is "price to pay" for inventory and logistics of the new medium nougat parts. While I agree there's a pricing element that absorbs the cost of creation of new parts/new colours, it seems that it is not as expensive to create a new mould than to create a new colour for existing mould. If there is any take away from exploring the prices of these 3 sets we can conclude that TLG puts in more margin in the production of new minifigures than the production of new parts in new colour. And that's why Clayface has seemingly more value in my opinion.
  13. Thanks Jim! We're on the opposite end of the spectrum. As I have mentioned I don't collect Superheroes so I only see TLBM sets as opportunistic way to get interesting parts. I don't even have a single Joker minifigure... but that's a different story. Anyway, thanks for compliments! Oh dear... that price was really off. It's already corrected. Thanks. I totally missed that one. Thanks Gunman! Notes regarding the photos -- it's very easy to over saturate the medium nougat colour to the point that it looks like a totally different hue when you don't do colour balancing / colour correction. Most pictures in the web, including Brickset uploaded a much more saturated image and it looks so wrong in their pictures. I tried to be faithful to how my eyes see the colours in real-life.
  14. After watching The LEGO Batman Movie, I am now ready to give a full review of this set with perspective from the movie. Let’s get the ball rolling for my 3rd Eurobricks review. Overview Name: 70904 Clayface Splat Attack Theme: LEGO System / The LEGO Batman Movie Year: 2017 (1H) Pieces: 448 Minifigures: 2 Price: USD 34.99 / EUR 34.99 / GBP 29.99 / SGD 64.99 / MYR 179.90 Resources: Brickset and Bricklink Introduction As a kid I watched the Batman animated series on TV every week. Even though Clayface did not appear in any major live action Batman movie I can vividly recall this villain with its shape shifting abilities. His origin story from the animated series is also quite horrendous so that’s probably the reason why I remember this character very well. The front box art shows Clayface’s big mouth with his right arm shaped like a giant hammer ready to pound Mayor McCaskill. At the back of the box it shows Clayface firing off six-studs rapid shooter as Batman tries to save Mayor McCaskill. There is nothing fancy on the sides of the box so let’s move on. Inside we get 4 numbered bags and an instruction booklet. I am happy to say there is no sticker sheet. Hurray! Build Below is the preview of the instruction booklet on how each bag contributes to the build. Bag # 1 contents This is the body frame of Clayface. It uses basic SNOT techniques very effectively to pull off the structure needed for Clayface’s body. After completing bag #1 you’ll have the body frame and legs completed. You also complete a very small build that makes up the clay “splat” trap holding Mayor McCaskill. Bag # 2 contents After completing bag #2, the front and back of Clayface’s body is already fully covered with medium nougat (BL: medium dark flesh) 2x2 round plates. I cannot recall any other set that uses round plates to achieve this kind of texture and detail. The hinges provide the necessary angle to make the body rounded. At first I thought the round plates will be flimsy but they hold up quite well. Bag #3 contents Bag #3 adds the face and the upper arms. As I mentioned earlier there is no sticker in this set so the eyes are printed on a pair of 1x2 slopes. The mouth is built using several clips that you can swivel up and down. This enables you to modify the facial expression of Clayface from a very mad or grumpy look (default expression) to a mild smile or smirk. So far I have no complaints but if I really need to nit-pick I wish that the designers added varying lengths of clips to add more varieties of facial expressions. Bag #4 contents Finally, bag #4 completes the set with three interchangeable lower arms-- two of them have six-studs rapid shooters and the other one has a hammer-fist. I admit that this is just petty criticism but why put six-studs rapid shooters for both arms when the designer clearly recognises the need for interchangeable arms? I think adding a lower arm with an articulated hand as seen in the movie is more suitable. People are teasing me…. that I look like a poop! Overall, the build of Clayface is really enjoyable. The texture created using round plates makes an unusual organic look that makes my wife gags whenever she sees it on display. Eventually, I have to hide it from her because she warmed me of dumping Clayface in the trash can if she sees it on display one more time. If being repulsive and ugly is the end-goal here, then the designers succeeded. My son likes changing the facial expression of Clayface. Even though the shape of the mouth is limited, the left and right eyes can be swapped to make the angry face look like a frown, as seen from the back of the box. Not to forget -- after completing the build, I still have all these spare parts. Parts Speaking of parts, I have to include a dedicated section of this review for parts alone because I am amazed at the crazy amount of parts in new colour included in this set. This is actually the main reason why I bought this set because once I grow tired of this set I can easily dismantle this and use the parts for my MOCs. It’s like the designer of this set challenged the boss and said “I want these parts in medium nougat or you won’t get this set created,” and voila! 15 new elements in medium nougat (BL: medium dark flesh) and 1 new element in reddish brown were created just for Clayface. In total, 271 pieces in new colours are used in this set (not counting the spare parts). Therefore, as this set has a total of 448 pieces, about 60% of this set is made of parts in new colour. Is there any other set in recent years that can beat that? Minifigures There are only 2 minifigs included in the set which is typical for its price bracket. Both has dual face printing as well as front and back torso printing. Sadly, leg printing is absent for both. If I will put on my Star Wars fanboy hat right now, I will demand “the minifigs must have leg printing” but fortunately this is not Star Wars and the price of this set is very reasonable that the absence of leg printing does not bother me at all. Mayor McCaskill’s is unique to this set and at this moment her bob cut hair piece also appears in this set only. Fun fact: Mariah Carey voiced the mayor. Her birthmark on the face is also present on the minifigure so by right if you own Mayor McCaskill minifigure then you own a Mariah Carey minifigure. I’m not a Superheroes collector so I don’t have a big amount of Batman minifigures but I happen to have The LEGO Movie (TLM) version of Batman that came out in set 70817 (Batman & Super Angry Kitty Attack). It is very similar to the Batman minifigure that comes in this set; however, there are slight differences. Both have angry and grinning faces but the expression from the older one is more exaggerated. The cape of the new Batman minifigure is made of spongy stretchable fabric while the old one uses the classic starched fabric. The utility belt is a new accessory and somehow because of this, Batman’s “10” abs are now more prominent (if you don’t get this reference then you’ve missed it in the TLBM). Also, the yellow ink in TLBM version is noticeably brighter. Overall, the new batman is the better minifigure. Conclusion Superman, you’re not supposed to be here! Ok, I said from the beginning that I will give my opinion with perspective from the movie so let’s address the elephant in the room here. Is the Clayface Splat Attack scene even in the movie? If you have not watched the movie and want to reveal the spoiler go ahead and read below. Now that you know if the set is accurate to the movie, does it even affect my opinion of this set? Not at all. In worst case scenario, I can look at this set as a parts pack to get new medium nougat coloured elements and even having said that this is still a very good and enjoyable set. It’s like an action figure set with 2 minifigures. If you strip it down to core selling points -- you get Batman, a very recognisable villain brick-built action figure with two six-stud rapid shooters, articulated joints and whimsical face, and a Mariah Carey minifigure. My gripe on Clayface not having more ways to change the expression and lacking a normal hand is just splitting hair because my son loves every bit of this set even though my wife hates it for reasons I cannot further articulate in this review. For me, it is one of the better-valued TLBM set out there. Even for someone not heavily invested in Superheroes I will recommend it just for the building experience and parts. Review summary Playability: 9/10 - enjoyable brick-built action figure that kids will love Design / Building Experience: 9/10 - Simple SNOT technique that works with unusual texture using round plates Price / Value for money: 10/10 - At best - a well-designed villain set; At worst - an excellent parts pack of medium nougat elements. Overall: 9/10 - Don’t buy this when it reminds you of poop. Other than that, I highly recommend it.
  15. I’m back and this time I got a Ninjago set to review. This is my second EuroBricks review so let’s get it on! Overview Name: 70591 Kryptarium Prison Breakout Theme: LEGO System / Ninjago Year: 2016 (2H) Pieces: 207 Minifigures: 5 Price: USD 19.99 / EUR 19.99 / GBP 17.99 / SGD 39.90 / MYR 99.90 Resources: Brickset & Bricklink Introduction The day I saw the official images after its announcement I knew that I will be getting this playset. Kryptarium Prison Breakout includes 5 minifigures and it has relatively good amount of system bricks and plates to be considered as good parts donor. Before I go into more details, let’s look at the box art at the back and the sides. Inside we get 2 numbered bags, an instruction booklet and 1 sticker sheet. Bag #1 contents Bag #2 contents Let’s take a moment to appreciate the sticker sheet because I rarely apply stickers. In this review, I won’t be applying them. #1 is supposed to be a “seal” for the prison. I can’t find any concept art for the show if this dragon actually exists. Even after rewatching the Ninjago TV episodes, nowhere it is hinted that Kryptarium is guarded by dragons. This could be just one of those artist’s decision to include random dragon art. #2 depicts a map of the escape route from Kryptarium Prison to Tiger Widow Island. #3 is the plan showing how to break out off the prison via toilet using a crowbar… it's funny that the designers needed to supply this sticker to make it more obvious what the plan is. Minifigures We get 5 minifigures which is so awesome for the size of this set. There is Kai in his Skybound Gi outfit, Zane in prison uniform, Captain Soto in prison uniform, “Giant” Stone Warrior in prison uniform and a lonesome prison Guard who thinks he is cool with those sunglasses on. At the time of its release, this set is the cheapest way to get Zane’s titanium hair. Another compliment is the choice to include a gold scabbard for 2 swords because I don’t like it when the designers leave out the armour accessories in smaller sets. Just how expensive is that accessory to be removed when TLG can include a few more extra pieces that you rarely even use? So, I so am happy that Kai has a gold scabbard for his swords. If I need to nitpick on the minifigures - I wish that LEGO included a gold hook for Captain Soto as well as his pirate torso instead of the prison outfit. The “Giant” Stone Warrior is so small compared to the TV show version. With this price point I am even surprised they managed to squeeze in an extra Prison Guard with a generic headpiece. I just hope they included the right uniform colour because in the TV show the guards wore sand yellow (BL: dark tan) uniforms. Build The first build is a small table that can catapult the bread roll into the air. Underneath is a brick yellow (BL: tan) 2x2 tile with a map sticker that I didn’t apply, as well as a shuriken. It’s a fun small build and is great for launching anything you fancy for a good prison fight. The main build is the facade of the prison which has a passing resemblance to the older sets 70756 Dojo Showdown and 2504 Spinjitzu Dojo. Those who watches the Ninjago TV show would know how big the Kryptarium prison is in-universe so this is a very small representation of what Kryptarium Prison is supposed to be. Even if you buy 20 boxes of this set I doubt you can put them all together to create a full-scale Kryptarium Prison. Therefore, this size is very reasonable for the price of what we paid for. I didn’t expect this set to contain any unique or interesting pieces because I wasn’t looking for a complex build since we already have 5 minifigures. It’s a small playset packed with play features. Those who are looking for a fun building experience-- you just won’t find it from this set. That is not to say there is nothing to highlight from this set -- I find the sliding drop-down gate in the middle cleverly built. I think kids will enjoy sliding the door up and down with ease. It also uses the top roof as an anchor to hold the gate from sliding down accidentally. In addition, the prison cell build uses hinges so you can swivel the prison cells to your preferred angle. Security cameras in real life are generally dull, black and not brightly coloured but the one included in this set is blue -- most likely to highlight this play feature to kids. This is how the guard had imagined the job... Easy peasy. But in reality -- The toilet build in one of the prison cell is amusing. If I am not mistaken it is also the first toilet to ever appear in any Ninjago set. Picka-poo! Hello guys, I think I broke something... Of course this is not a complete review without the extra pieces. Even though I know there are 2 handcuffs, I didn’t include the spare one here. Conclusion In summary, this set is a fun small playset that kids can enjoy to roleplay a prison escape much like any City prison set but with more action. The 5 minifigures included is unprecedented for the price point and the main build, a prison rigged with escape routes, will offer hours of fun. Despite lacking any special pieces that adult fans will appreciate more, the simple build can be considered as good parts donor. After all, the main reason why any adult fan will buy this set is not for the build but for the minifigures included in the set. Review summary Playability: 9/10 - fun little set that is more enjoyable than any City prison break of the same price range Design / Building Experience: 6/10 - nothing exciting but that’s expected for this type of set Price / Value for money: 10/10 - 5 minifigs at this price point? Give me more of this! Overall: 9/10 - If only we got Captain Soto’s pirate torso & his gold hook, this set will be golden.
  16. Pugs! Aren't they cute? Even if you disagree, the Friends subtheme Party has a lot to offer. In my first EuroBricks review I will cover 41112 Party Cakes so without further ado, let's begin. Overview Name: 41112 Party Cakes Theme: LEGO System / Friends Year: 2016 (1H) Pieces: 50 Minidolls: 0 Price: USD 4.99 / EUR 4.99 / GBP 3.99 / SGD 7.90 / MYR 19.90 Resources: Brickset, Bricklink Introduction This is my very first EuroBricks review and I would like to start with a very small set that caught my attention due to its numerous appealing factors. Apart from cuteness this set offers common elements found in Friends Party subtheme such as gifts, confectionaries, balloons and pets. There are several new prints and mould colours which makes this set very valuable to collectors and MOCers alike. The main attraction here is the new pug but there is more to this set than just the dog. To know more about this set continue reading on. Front view of the box It is a very small set so only the front of the box has something interesting to show. Box content You get an instruction booklet, 2 plastic bags without numbers and 1 plate round corner 6 x 6 which appears in bright yellowish green (BL: lime) for the first time in 2016. Instruction booklet Let's jump immediately at the back to see the parts listing and see other Friends Party subtheme sets. 41112 is the smallest in this wave with only 50 pieces. At the back of the instruction booklet there is a list of other Friends set currently available in the market, too Let's Build The Pug The star of this set is the pug named Toffee. It is a new mould exclusive to this set at the time of this review and it also sports a new party hat colour in medium azure. Its face is not very cartoonish when compared to the other LEGO Friends dogs or puppies that came out previously. It helps that in real life pugs do have large heads so when you put them next to other LEGO system dogs like the German Shepherd and Chihuahua it does not look far from the actual scale. Small build #1 (gift) This tiny gift box has a new colour of wall double corner / panel 1 x 2 x 1 part. Previously it only appeared in medium azure colour but in 2016 it debut in a number of sets, including 41122, in bright reddish violet (BL: magenta). The gift box cover is also a new printed inverted tile 2 x 2 in new colour - flame yellowish orange (BL: bright light orange). One might complain that the inverted tile 2 x 2 is very loose because the panels do not give any clutch power whatsoever to the inverted tile. However, I would think this is intentional because this kind of build is repeated across multiple Friends sets released this year so far. Small build #2 (table) As the subtheme is about party and the name of this set is Party Cakes it is expected that you are immediately presented with a table with a plateful of cake, pastry, strawberry flavour beverage and party invite. The new invitation printed tile in aqua (BL: light aqua) is a welcome addition and I appreciate the fact that it did not specify any event because it makes this part more reusable for other purposes. Small build #3 (baking area) A lot of details are included in this vignette using Plate Round Corner 6 x 6 that appears in bright yellowish green (BL: lime) for the first time. This vignette appears to be a small area with oven for making more party cakes. We get a milk carton 1x1 printed brick and what appears to be a sugar/sweetener in a cone container. There is also a platform where you can put Toffee the pug to guard whatever is currently baking so that no naughty boy or girl can spoil it before the party. Lastly, we also have a balloon in medium azure! To me, the highlight of this small build is the new colour of round 2 x 2 dome bottom. Yes, yet another new coloured part and that's why I am so happy getting this little set. The balloon build is rounder using this bottom piece and I personally prefer this compared with the old construction using 2 dome tops because the older balloons look elongated. New balloon (top and bottom dome) vs old balloon build (2x top domes) Definitely rounder and with less distracting holes at the sides. New parts summary Here is the recap of the new parts / new parts colours. Extra pieces For a small set it has a lot of extra pieces. You can make another cupcake out of these extra pieces if you want to. Conclusion Finally, let's take a look at the final build with all the small builds combined: To conclude, I had fun building this little set because not only you get a new pug mould but also because you get a lot of new parts and extra pieces. Apart from the pug, the medium azure balloon parts also contributed to its appeal because it is not common. I don't mind not having a minidoll in this little set because the pug is the star of this set. However, kids may need a minidoll to enjoy the play features if they want someone operating the oven. Overall, it is a great value and one more reason why you should look at Friends theme even if you don't have interest in minidolls. Summary review Playability: 7/10 - fun little set but kids may want a minidoll to organise the party Design / Building Experience: 8/10 - I appreciate the little details and new parts and new prints Price / Value for money: 9/10 - great deal to get a new dog mould in a cheap set; new parts are just bonus Overall: 8/10 - I would prefer less 'sweets' and 1 more balloon to make this set even better Thank you very much and I hope you like this small set review. :) Note: The original review was written on 14 February 2016 in EB Reviewers Academy. Some of the statements written here could be outdated already.
  17. I have 2 astromechs from Bricklink which I have delayed so long to buy... I'm so close to completing my astromech but that R3-M2 is still elusive.
  18. If you read your own words you did suggest a live action Ninjago. Even though you referred only to the stories that is like saying you want the script of the live action movie be taken and adapted from Ninjago animated TV show. As others have stated it is going to be silly. However, I know where you are coming from because as an AFOL, I do enjoy watching Ninjago and the story fluctuates from mildly silly to outrageously non-sense but that is always applicable to any LEGO movie anyway. The Ninjago universe is still expanding that if TLG decided to market this to grown ups in the future, like how Hollywood is reviving old franchises for nostalgic factor, I think that they it may work. Not this decade though.
  19. The image looks real... but where are the seagulls?? Also... Baseplate!
  20. I don't know why it is an issue if TLNM does not use bricks and studs in all objects and environment. These things had been discussed by the creative minds who designed the aesthetic of the movie in great length and I am personally glad that the animation style is not a total repeat of what we have seen in TLM and TLBM. This movie uses a lot more smear frames (in-between frames to make up the motion blurs) that are made of LEGO pieces. On its own I think it is a great "feature" of the animation style. Also the real water effect would take more polygons and therefore more computer power to render so before anyone says that the animators are just being lazy to use bricks and studs, that's the counter-argument already. The same can be said about the other plants and organic elements found in the movie. The movie is just aesthetically different.
  21. I also finished watching the movie today. I wasn't expecting the level of parody they did for this movie. If you're a die hard Batman fan I think you're going to love the references scattered in the movie script.
  22. Nope. They are called tassels
  23. The buildings are just awesome. If I have all the bricks, time and resources now I will reverse engineer the builds used in the movie. I find it more interesting than Brickburg.
  24. I think you just predicted the worst.
