Not that hard really, i looked into this last week, all lego would need to do is shorten the axle bit on the crank part by half a beam's width, and make a new conrod-shape. Couple that with a small offset between cilinders (which isnt pretty common in real world boxer engines), and you have a proper boxer engine. Add a 1.5 beam width axle part and you can build 4 and more cylinder boxers. Id love for Lego to put out some update engine internals, colour aside the fake engines have been the same for decades.

Very nice concept! Im not 100% on the fake engine though, AFAIK big ships tend to use large inline diesels rather then V8s, and hiding it under the battery box (one of the biggest least see-through parts ever) is a shame, a 4 cilinder inline (or even two, one per screw axle) more near the back would be more realistic.

I think your 50 category is waaay too wide, the yellow dump truck was €26 over here IIRC, 42036 €40, 42037 €55, as was the fire plane. Looking at the pic, two of this years mid range sets are really similar, one is a reach-loader, the other is a slightly smaller reach-loader with a container truck.. I might be alone in this, but i really dislike compound sets, id much rather have one big vehicle/machine then two smaller ones, as you really lose a lot of complexcity. And if you group the 50 and 80 categories as mid range, we've gone from 6 very distinct varied sets, to 4, two of which cover very similar subjects, and one of which is just a PF parts pack with no mechanical complexity. Also, 42000 and 42039 getting a (poorly proportioned) jet as a succesor kind of saddens me

2017 Speed Champions Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Vectormatic replied to BrickJagger's topic in LEGO Town
Varies on a var by car basis, in a lot of cases there are rather critical style elements on the stickers (grilles, headlights, badges), but take the AMG GT3 for instance, you can leave off all the sticker except for the front grille and you end up with a rather normal AMG GT (road version) looking car. The Ford GT40 should be fine as well, considering i have a custom MOC version of it on my shelf (without stickers obviously) -
That looks bad-megablocks! Im not entirely up to speed on BMW bikes, but this makes me wonder if the R1200GS could be a good base for other BMW models, given the driveline etc..

Technic 2017 Set Discussion
Vectormatic replied to CM4Sci's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Ill probably see about bricklinking it, buying a second 42057 doesnt faze me, and the loader might be an economic parts pack for the car chassis, but a second BMW.... nah.. Those three sets add up to €100+, im not seeing that amount of parts in the car chassis, especially since there doesnt seems to be a gearbox or anything -

Agreed, 2015 H2 only had three sets, as did 2016 IIRC (plus the porsche) -

Assuming its the same shade of purple as the panels found in 42048.. (and other purple parts needed) Honestly, i think the fire truck looks the most like a proper technic set, the other models suffer from LSD-influenced colour choices and just frankly looking weird in the case of the tracked thing... Ill be skipping these -

What does that have to do with the lego set having a completely different colour then the actual race-cars? Its like Ferrari OKing all their cars to be released in purple. -

I love the AMG GT3, just a tad disappointed that the while it does come with a "road stock" front end and detachable spoiler, the back is still GT3 only, and the grill stickers are grey backed, wont be easy to make a proper road-legal GT out of it :( I might have double dipped if those points had been adressed. The FXX-K set does look sweet, but €65 man... no way. And the colour choice on the merc set still utterly baffles me, im surprised Merc even OK-ed that set like that -
Nice review! I do like the bike, despite some minor niggles (exhaust is a big one after seeing this review), but nothing that cant be fixed by some careful modding, as all my technic bikes receive. Im slightly disappointed at the price though, €55 where-as 42039 and 42007 were €40 and €30 respectively, ive got a hard time justifying the added cost purely with the monoshock front and details, given that some of the detailing is off... (or in the case of the paniers, i dont really care for them)

I doubt there isnt at least one guy at lego who knows his mechanics, especially in the technic design team, but there might be more reasons we dont really know, in the end the current fake engine parts look good enough for most technic fans, and i will admit that i am one of the more detail obsessed people here probably. I just find it odd that both the porsche and the BMW motorcycle, vehicles known in enthusiast circles explicitly for their boxer engines, would get 180 degree V-engines. If i had been on either the porsche or BMW liaison team, i would have tried very hard to get lego to make a proper boxer engine. Efferman pretty much ruled out printed parts by the way, cross axle/receptor stuff doesnt work well enough with current printing tech, the prints just arent accurate enough to give a secure connection. He suggested a one piece crank with clip-on conrods I might dick around a bit to see what i can do with regular unmodified parts, but i think ill end up buying some spare parts and modifying those to see where it goes. -
Efferman's Custom Parts
Vectormatic replied to efferman's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Hmm, i see, i might just go down the modifying real parts route then, considering a one piece crank (which in the end would still require either a cross axle, or a cross axle receptor) would pretty much limit me into specific single configurations in terms of cilinder count etc.. Bit of a bummer, but modifying existing parts was always going to be more cost effective, considering crank or con-rod pieces only cost a few cents each on BL. -

I just asked efferman, since his custom parts topic appeared at the top of the forums just now. One could also make custom crank-steps (1/4 rotation, 1/3 rotation) to make a cross plane crank V8, or a properly balanced I3/V6 engine, or crank parts for I4/V8 with proper conrod-locators. Lego themselves probably dont care enough about realistic engine configurations, but i feel like it would be a welcome modernisation to current technic to at least have a bit more variation over the regular flat plane V engine (even slightly surprised they didnt do something like this for the porsche) -
Efferman's Custom Parts
Vectormatic replied to efferman's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Hey Efferman I was wondering, can you print axle and axle related parts with good enough precision? Ive been mulling over true boxer engines, and come to the conclusion that with a modified engine crank (the axle pin needs to be 1 stud long rather then 1.5) and a modified conrod (it needs some plastic taken away on one side to allow for it to fit into a smaller crank) you could build a 2 cilinder true boxer engine, with the cilinder offset half a stud. Add to that a custom 1.5 long axle and you can build arbitrary length boxer engines. I know i can build this by modifying existing parts (namely grinding off some bits of the crank and conrod parts), but custom prints parts would be nice too. -

Not a bad idea, but i dont have a 3d printer available (dont know anyone who has one), ordering a few of those crank pieces and conrods off bricklink would be far more cost effective.. Im not entirely sure of my own stance on the matter to be honest, i keep all my models pure lego, but it just feels annoying that the engine components have been unchanged for over two decades and are so limited in terms of realism/options. Lego themselves even dont bother to for instance get inline 4 engines correct (as seen in 42037, the correct crank would be up-down-down-up, not up-down-up-down for a normal I4) -

conrods are 0.75 of a beams width, and yeah, modding those would indeed make em weaker. Im not a big fan of the idea either, im just a tad disappointed with lego for only allowing V and inline engine configs, and only those with flat plane cranks, id very much like a proper boxer engine. -

quick question, how do people feel about modifying parts? I want to build a proper boxer engine, as in pistons going in and out at the same time. Now i think i would be able to do that by of-setting the two cilinders by half a beam's width, and cutting half a beam's width of two of the small crank end parts (and perhaps cutting a tiny bit of two con-rods). For context, i feel like a boxer engine is a better fit for 42057, but i would prefer a true boxer over a flat V -
Oooh nice, a €20 jungle heli and sea rescue plane, also curious about the €6 jungle buggy.

2017 Speed Champions Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Vectormatic replied to BrickJagger's topic in LEGO Town
Oh wow, i had no idea these were out already... its going to be a looooong wait till they show up here. Nice to see lego using clear back stickers by the way, if other SC models do the same i might be tempted into doubling up on some for colour swaps. -

Not every set/number makes it into production, in technic for instance, 42051 was never shown beyond a few leaks, and never made it into production -

Agreed, compare that FXX-K with the 2015 LaFerrari to see how far the design has come And i was rather impressed with the variety from 2016 compared to 2015 as well. -
Technic 2017 Set Discussion
Vectormatic replied to CM4Sci's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Well, again im not exactly interested. Im mostly into sports/race-cars, and it seems lego just expects me to pony up for the porsche rather then build a proper succesor to 42000 and 42039, the motorcycles have also experience serious price-creep. Come to think of it, the only two sets from the last two years im interested in buying were/are 42048 and 57.. The rest is either uninteresting subject matter to me, or has serious design issues.
