I wouldn't mind knights in the future, as long a there are knights from hundreds of years in the past. From what I gather, that will not be the case. With Nexo Knights around, there will be no traditional medieval fantasy Castle theme. Very disheartening.

As far as Eurobricks and many Castle fans are concerned, absolutely. As far as LEGO is concerned, it is a Castle theme. Sad, really.
-
This thread is great, but what we really need is a thread about Future Medieval Castle sets, so people don't think we're talking about "Future Castle" sets like Nexo Knights.
-
If it looks like it would fit in with any era of Space sets, it's probably not going to be taken as Castle by the Castle fans.
-
The thing that fits into the shield? I haven't seen one, but I do believe it looks like the top of a plate.
-
Yeah, I noticed that in another thread after I made this post. A most disappointing revelation. I also think that they are different enough to exist concurrently, but apparently LEGO does not.
-
Just about anything in the traditional medieval fantasy realm, as LEGO isn't likely to develop it on their own for quite a while.

You made a cyber-castle theme and called it fantasy Castle. People wanted a fantasy Castle theme, and they included many detailed descriptions of what that means to them. I don't think a single one mentioned tanks, mtorcycles, lasers, or robots in a positive way. You're hyping up all of the Castle elements here, and severely downplaying the wealth of futuristic technology. That last sentence is the saddest thing. It looks as though LEGO enters it's Castle Dark Ages.

That's great, but I took the poll as our opinion rather than that of LEGO. It does, insofar as it will preclude any actual medieval fantasy Castle themed sets for the duration of its existence (as far as anyone here can tell). Maybe Mark Stafford could weigh in on that point.

A steampunk Castle theme would be more reasonable, but I wouldn't have imagined anything modern day about it. I thought it would just be a bit of steam powered medieval tech, still in a medieval setting. The first steam engine was invented in ancient Greece, if I remember correctly. You'll also notice that some people weren't happy about that, either. And the technology here in Nexo Knights seems a lot more futuristic than modern. I appreciate the term cyber-castle. It feels much more appropriate than Castle. I also understand that the Castle theme needed some reinvigoration. I would have hoped it would come from something like Forestmen or Wolfpack, both because I loved those themes as a child, and because it would be different from the last few waves of medieval Castle that we've seen, always focused on the Kings, knights, and jousts. I hope that a new generation of Castle fans emerges from this, rather than a new generation of sci-fi or cyber-castle fans, but I'm happy that it's getting fans either way. I don't think anyone's trying to tell him that, or really arguing that fact with him at all. At least I'm not. We're just explaining our own feelings about what this feels like to us. If LEGO considers this a Castle theme, that's fine. I can understand how they could make that distinction, as it's taking a lot of familiar Castle elements and updating them into a cyber-castle theme. I can also understand how Castle fans see it as something else, because of the technology, cars, flying robots, transforming motorcycles, mech suits, downloads, holograms, robot chefs, lasers, hoverboards, etc. That would be a really cool storyline, and I hope they use it if this show gets additional seasons. He could be a cool villain. And I'd really like a minifigure of him in his physical form (trans preferred over gold). If that happened, I bet he would turn red or red-orange.

Are any of those 360 degree builds? Not even Orthanc is, and I'd say that's the closest to what I'm talking about. I don't think half of those compare to this level of complexity. Put Temple of Airjitzu, a great set, next to the Modular buildings and it looks cheap.

Nice: That's a really nice looking build. Too bad Creator / City is the only theme that gets these fantastic detailed buildings. I wonder what that thing on top is. I'm guessing it's some sort of crane using that rope. What will it be holding? Maybe a safe? Are those bucket handles in the stonework up top? With a shield in the middle? And I think that's the Elves fence piece in black. If so, that's awesome! The arch above the door is really well done, too.

I know what you mean! I feel the same way. What are some of the best historic or fantasy licenses that appeal to the nostalgic AFOL in the same way as Ghostbusters and Back to the Future? Maybe our best bet for getting historic / fantasy themes would be to submit licensed concepts to Ideas. The current dry spell feels like Castle going through its Dark Ages.

Disney Princess 2016 Rumors and Discussion
x105Black replied to Amazing Bricks's topic in LEGO Licensed
True. A new molded deer that isn't a cutesy Friends style would be great. Hope that LEGO eventually gives us one in a Castle theme with Forestmen. -
Absolutely, and I mentioned that a few pages back. I was never all that into that cartoon, but I liked the holograms. Here's the picture I used for comparison: Just from a character design point of view, I'd say it's spot on. Multi-colored techno armored knights? Check. Large animal logos in a clearly marked location on their chests? Check. Large techno looking panels with weird logos, capable of granting them powers? Check. A high-tech sci-fi show with some medieval elements for flavor? Check. They even had wacky sci-fi vehicles. This one reminds me a lot of Moltor's Lava Smasher, especially when you consider what Moltor looks like (with his big gold fists): They even had a Wizard (Merklynn) who granted them their powers. The main difference I see is that Visionaries is "an advanced society where all electronics have failed and the people are forced to rely on the old magics," but Nexo Knights is an advanced society where "they can download incredible Nexo Powers into their shields!" Meaning that while both look similarly futuristic, Visionaries heroes are magic based, and Nexo Knights heroes are technology based (according to promotional materials). So when people say that Nexo Knights was inspired by 80's cartoons, this is the only one that really comes to mind. It should be noted that Visionaries was considered a failure.

There are several clear periods of history. While I'm inclined to agree with you, I think that maybe more topics for those eras could be created. Western themed sets are considered historical, but that's pretty far in the future from a medieval point of view. Maybe a new thread for ~1400-1900. Egypt and Greece were already ancient history to people in the medieval era. Maybe a new thread for Antiquity. And so on...

I mean "historical" in terms of medieval technology levels rather than futuristic technology levels, not in adherence to actual history. A tank is a tank, and a motorcycle is a motorcycle, no matter what's powering them. Your Poll should show that while there may be a majority who think it is a Castle theme, there is quite a significant number of people who don't see it that way. I completely understand that this theme has a lot of things that are traditionally the realm of Castle themes. But what really makes those work in a traditional Castle theme is the fact that they exist in a traditional low technology Castle world. This level of technology is arguably more important to the feel of Castle than any single one of those other elements. In my opinion, you can certainly have a Castle theme without a Jester, or a Princess, or a Dragon, or an Orc, but I don't think you could have a real Castle theme without the setting, which is medieval. I figured that's what Castle really meant when used as a theme name. I guess I'm wrong, and I feel that LEGO considering this a Castle theme speaks volumes for their understanding of what fans loved about Castle themes. It also means it's not very likely that we'll see any real Castle themes for a while, which is seriously disappointing. I'm lucky I'm into Star Wars, CMFs, and some Superheroes, as I'll likely have things to collect in those areas for the next while. I will give LEGO credit for drawing inspiration from previous Castle themes with things like heraldry, though. That was a nice touch. Still, I think this fits in the Action Adventure category here, as it's a theme based around a television show. What was clear was that there is magic and spellbooks. What wasn't obvious was that Nexo Powers are magic, and that their technology is magic-based. I thought the Nexo Powers were technologically driven superpowers, and that the tech was just advanced tech (Arthur C. Clarke's Third Law: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."). Maybe I'll have to watch them again.

Dang, there I go again, not recognizing the actual employee. No offence, but when will we see real historical Castle sets?
-
I'm waiting for that, too. Wondering how the beard will be done. Also waiting to see images of the Droid Escape Pod.

I don't think it's magic. It seems to be some sort of Sci-fi technology. In the show it's a hologram minifigure...
