Who else here is into all sorts of themes?
CaptainToad replied to Blondie-Wan's topic in General LEGO Discussion
:) lego doesnt really provide enought to stick with one theme! I buy sets either for the parts and sell the figs or for the figs which have to be related to history in a way and those have become few and far between these days... -
well said!!!

Anything thats pre 20th century would be awesome!!!

I dont think we will see another castle theme anytime soon - not as long nexo knights exists, if its gonna be succesful, which is likely, that can be a long wait. Its probably gonna be some licensed themes that might help us out with historic builds/figs I am afraid the next year will be a drought - too I didnt come out of my dark age sooner :(

Would you buy your sons a barbie doll? Would you like to see commercials showing boys playing with barbies? Should every boy play with dolls at least for some time? :) If lego hadnt brought out themes targeted at girls people would complain. Now people complain that lego produces/markets some themes with a feminine touch and some themes with a masculine touch. It is natural to advertise sets which are primarily intended to be played with by girls with girls. Think about it, if lego advertised those sets with boys AND girls wouldnt it distort reality in some way? It would imply that boys want to play with dolls! Imagine you have a bunch of girls playing with dolls, how many boys will be eager to join the bunch? Thats just reality! We should keep in mind that its rather a minority of boys who is interested in playing with dolls - you cannot view the minority as a standard and this affects advertising. In real life, when you go to a construction site you will find mostly men who do the heavy lifting - I think the company owner would be in trouble if a law was passed that half of his workers need to be women :) there are certain tendencies in life which have nothing to do with discrimination or something, they just reflect life.

IMHO a castle theme implies a historic setting, more or less, thats how is was in the past, nexo knights is afaik the first castle mash up so far. If its a castle than its not pure castle thats for sure and IMHO its very incompatible with previous castle waves. I am not gonna buy these sets because they are not really what I would like but thats my problem. Pity they hadnt been so creative with for example the last castle theme. On the other hand I sort of even like this theme - there is something about it - if I were a kid I might get into it - but as I am more into history/medieval fantasy I will give it a pass. Personally I couldnt care less about lego cartoons or video games but I guess its nice for the kids, so in this regard it makes sense. I think this whole disappointment (for lots of people) wouldnt have occured if those fantasy rumours were not spread - kept expectations for a 'traditional', fantasy/historic setting high. The expression 'big bang' theme hyped up expectations even more. I got so frustrated with these theme that I bought myself a couple of 70400 sets in order to have a larger traditional army, even though I dont especially like that last castle theme. What worries me most is that next year might be very poor in regard to anything historic coming out. Pirates will probably not get another wave, another traditional castle line will be very unlikely for the next couple of years (hopefully I am wrong on this one), another western theme seems unlikely as well - maybe ninjago pirates will have something nice and compatible in store. Its not easy at all to be an afol during these times ;)

I wouldnt restrict a castle theme to just castles - its the medieval setting that makes a castle theme a castle theme. Vikings for example frequently invaded Britain - so its very much related to castles. A castle doesnt need to be strictly a western castle - fortresses count as well imho
-
yes, I must admit its a very creative new theme for lego - I just wish they would have put as much creativity into their recent castle and pirates themes definitely not for me
-
thats the problem of serving a theme every six years, it doesnt make really sense to change it - if someone is to be introduced to something they will start with the basics - treasure island, pirate ship, soldiers fort - everythen else is meat for a second wave - which may never come :(
-
ok, if they think releasing a new pirates theme every six years is the way to go then why not add a second wave to it? like two or three more sets - by doing so they could check how popular the pirates theme actually is among the newcomers.
-
didnt think about that :( hopefully it will overlap! actually I would prefer that gingerbread house - maybe europe will get that one first
-
it will certainly have its audience :)
-
to be honest, I would go for the holiday train :) its got probably way more parts than this tiger...
-
-
exactly! i guess there will be many useless parts in regard to some serious castle buidings - colors might be incompatible, too, we'll see
-
that would be awesome!!!

:) you should start writing stories :) I really hope there is gonna be a twist but my hopes are really down at the moment. In fact, the only set that I am looking forward to is the creator lakeside cabin :) :) not too much going on in 2016 since I missed so many castle waves I would really appreciate some re-releases like medieval market village, mill village raid and kingdoms joust etc. right now they are pretty much too expensive - mayb one day...

don't get me wrong, I am not against nexo knights for the sake of being against nexo knight - I am just pretty disappointed thats all, which is not to say that I cannot change my mind or something. I will certainly have a look at it. In a certain way I even have to agree with you - I was always against Chima and dismissed Ninjago UNTIL the temple of Arjitzu came out - after that I even bought the enter the serpent set, that is why I am not writing it off completely
-
I never liked Chima - dont like the idea of motorized vehicles - western trains is as far as I could imagine to go :) Castle 2013 was very poor in many regards - the thing is that a new wave of anything is expected to better than the last, and castle 2013 was a step back in many regards - however, it was not that bad - otherwise I wouldnt have bought some of the sets nexo knights might get a fanbase - however, I doubt that too many people who are into historic context will buy it or like it - if people complained about castle 2013 this will certainly not make them happy another thing that might bother people is that nexo knights could seriously diminish the chances of a proper castle theme - I mean why should lego invest in a castle theme if the kids want to play with nexo knights? And if this is the direction lego is going we might not see some proper 'historic' themes ant time soon - pirates will be replaced by ninjago pirates and if it is ever gonna come back it will probably be a rehash of sort with another fortress, treasure island and pirate ship. Another factor that might play a role in the general disapointment is the steampunk element that was rumoured early on - people were curious as to what it will be like - personally I am not too much a fan of steampunk but might give it a chance if it was done well - people were also hoping to get some knights that are more or less compatible with other castle knights. Furthermore I believe that once it has launched the nexo knights theme will be moved to the action forum after all it appears to be everything but historic

Exactly the reason why I passed on the chess set - otherwise a no-brainer, I said to myself I will not pay the extra money You are right - sometimes there is an insane amount of small pieces used that increase the ratio while keeping the build small - very often a couple of pieces are used for no reason when one bigger pieces would have been sufficient. the shako is quite expensive - I think the chess set would have been awesome if its potential had been fully realized - the lack of fully equipped soldiers hurts
-
what I was basically referring to was that lego should design their sets in a way that they can suit both children and adults alike - I dont think a child will mind if a minifig knight or pirate or cowboy will have a 'realistic' look, nor will children bother if there are some civilians involved - for example: one of the last castle sets was some sort of a carriage getaway - this could have included some civilians for example - the set might have needed some revamping and could have appealed to both -

just saw the leaked pic on youtube its worse than I thought... this has nothing to do with castle - I just hope that ninjago pirates will be more appealing... hopefully there will be a few surprises coming next year - and hopefully this nexo knights theme will flop so we get a chance to see something else
