  1. As shown this is a nice parts pack, although small children would probably be unimpressed with the lack of serious play features should something like this be released like in 2009. I'd probably buy it if it was available. Add another minifig or two and you'd really be talking.
  2. This is one of the most absurd creations ever posted in the Pirates forum - and I love it! The action and motion implied by the design are simply brilliant, and the water spraying everywhere is nice. The shark at the top with the two cannons blasting away is funny, and I have to ask - KB, is that you with the yellow mug? This is a very original entry to the contest. Keep it up.
  3. I really like the posing of this one. Both figures look great in that setting, and the seagull is a fine feature in any seaside scene. It's so simple, yet any sailor worth his salt should appreciate it for what it represents. Neat little scene.
  4. The CMF mermaid looks right at home in the warm waters of the Pirates forum... but I must say her taste in colors doesn't quite match my own. The way she's perched on that rock, waving at the sea and flashing that pretty gemstone, I wonder if she's trying to lure some lecherous sailor to his death. But does she know what's behind her? At any rate it seems both the man and the monkey are, uh, enjoying the view. Neat little scene.
  5. This is a fine little vessel, and something similar (i.e. slightly dumbed-down) would make a good official set. (Ahem, TLG...) The building style is refreshing and the shape and colors work well together. The armament may be a bit heavy, but it looks like a fun, well-manned, well-equipped ship. And of course the action in the photos is great. Nice work and... BrickOn!!
  6. The boats look nice, especially with all the different shields, and the action of the event is well represented. One can easily sense the urgency of the moment. The swimmers have shown the importance of timing too. This fits the expanding story line quite well.
  7. The herding of animals in any way is somewhat rare in the Lego world and this turned out quite well. The number and variety of horses are nice and the leaf pieces make a good, well-textured ground cover. The donkey looks a little crude in front of the horses, but we all understand that's about as good as you can do in brickbuilt form, and the overall shape is correct, especially the long ears. My only complaint is that the tree looks out of place; it would look better in larger form or maybe even removed from the scene entirely. Or maybe you were trying to capture that lone scraggly tree look, in which case it's fine. Nice work.
  8. Hurray! Yippee! Woooooo-hoo! Such a unique and well-built scene should be included in the contest. But with the flip-flopping I can't help but wonder what those scury dogs are thinking: "Hmm... do we take this one or... this one? Pay or plunder? You or... you?" Regarding your prior comments, I don't think you need much help with your English, because it's seriously better than that of many native speakers.
  9. KB - hmm, I'm not sure how much to give away... Do you like waterwheels? Phred - your town sounds great. Will it include any, uh, cannons? Can't wait to see it!
  10. KB - in a private conversation I stated that I hoped to be finished by late summer. Well, that time is here and I have a long way to go, so... time will tell. BrickOn - I hear you loud and clear regarding internet research. My project has unearthed numerous conflicting details, and most sources offer a very general, vague description of my subject that doesn't even begin to tell the story. That's part of the reason for why it's taking me so long. To my knowledge it hasn't been done before and I want it done right no matter how long it takes. Good luck on your project. It certainly sounds interesting.
  11. KB, I think this is a great idea that could help the transfer of ideas without cluttering up the forum with a boatload of chit-chat topics. I'll start the ball rolling. I'm currently working on a project that is neither huge nor mind-boggling (in my opinion, anyway) but is different due to its technically- and historically-correct nature. Through it all I've wondered how much interest exists within this forum (it will be an EB-exclusive project) for Pirates-theme material that is produced and presented primarily as educational material - a tutorial of sorts. Sure, other such material exists, like Horry's cannon tutorial and CGH/CRH's frigate-building tutorial, but those are both more creative in nature and not as much educational. Utimately the level of interest won't influence my project one way or the other, but I'm still curious as to how much people want to learn vs how much they want to see built - because this is a Lego forum first and foremost. I know I'm being vague, because I want to keep the subject a secret, but I can say that it's related to all the classic Pirates factions and components even though it isn't linked strictly to ships and shipping. Basically I'll be using Lego to illustrate a rather lengthy article that I've been researching and writing for some time now. Thoughts? Sound interesting? Boring? Dry as sawdust? Again, I'm going through with it regardless of input, but I'm just curious.
  12. Aha! Those scurvy dogs are showing their real colors now... This one looks much more complete than the first with the walls and floor details, and the arrangement is nice. The monkeys are hilarious and the carnage (Why the bed? Why?! Why?!) is a humorous touch, although in the spirit of the contest I'm not quite questioning your sanity... yet. Show the shopkeeper and his wife tied up in the flaming bed, or align the taller furniture like upright dominoes and topple them unto the two terrified women, and we'll all declare you sufficiently evil. (The lack of such suits my tastes better, by the way!) I like the unique nature of this one. Very original. I also like seeing the rules upheld, but considering the nature of the infraction - a single piece, recolored, largely inconsequential to the overall build - I wonder if it couldn't be forgiven. You're a master of variety, Captain Braunsfeld. What's next??
  13. A "weird topic"? Surely you jest. Okay, it doesn't fit the classic "pirates vs imperials" theme but every good building needs furniture, and such a varied collection is interesting no matter the theme. I previously meant that I really like the tall brown one right behind the lady pirate, but they're all nice. And colorful! Yeah, I saw the cookie, but still the name sounded conveniently like that other guy. Probably better than carrying a saber and a brace of pistols through such a cultured establishment. He just needs a tall glass of cold, uh, "milk" to wash it down... I thought that figure looked more neat and clean than the original. You've done a good job of using one of those zombie CMFs as an ordinary minifig. It looks great, really. How did you modify it? All that's missing is a ship in a bottle. Or maybe I just missed seeing it... You should be able to do some great interiors after this.
  14. That's a fine collection of furniture, Captain. Apparently the scurvy scalawags have good tastes despite their contempt for the law. I especially like the brown "unpainted" items (the tall chest with the ship painting in particular) and the black lattice-back chairs are simply brilliant. Is the captain's name by chance inspired by Captain Cook? And is that a piano I spy in the lower left corner? This is an interesting take on the theme and good work as always. But there's simply no way those salty sea dogs are paying...
  15. Aye aye, that's the ITP alright. The basic shapes are pretty good, although boats must be frustrating in that scale. I'd like a closer look at the merchant vessel too. This really compliments the others well. Nice work.
  16. You've done a good job of using modified sets and incorporating the old familiar characters into the story. Looks like a fun play set to me!
  17. Sounds sufficiently evil to me, and if that's what this is about, I don't see why not. I suppose it's better than being killed, but somehow I suspect it will provoke a sharper reaction, which seems odd.
  18. All this talk of a hybrid ninja/pirate line for next year has served me quite well... ...as a sleeping aid. *Z-z-z-z* Sadly that's what much of Lego has become: just another action/fantasy/sci-fi hodgepodge. The lack of such is what made the classic Pirates line (and, for the most part, the subsequent lines) so appealing.
  19. Well... since the Phredinator mentioned it... Because I build primarily 17th-18th century material, whenever a new Pirates line is launched I'll buy large multiples of everything for the parts and figures, and it makes me wonder - how much can we, the serious fans of the theme, skew sales by making big purchases? Sadly, I'm afraid we can't do that much considering that the greatest volume will go to the target audience: young children, boys especially. But I could be wrong. If everyone bought the theme like me Pirates would be a continual theme and they'd be building another factory to keep up. If you have any interest in this theme AT ALL buy them now before TLG pulls the plug and they get lost at sea for another 5-8 years. (If you want numbers, well, my set total came to high double figures... and I got quite a bit of stuff through B&P...)
  20. I meant it in a silly, light-hearted complimentary kind of way. I'm all for humorous creations, especially when it involves two staffers. The "perks" I was referring to is all the fun their sigfigs are having. And considering that I look up to the guilty parties makes it even better. What's next?!
  21. These are fantastic. They'd look great in one of those big dioramas. But that would be quite an undertaking in LDD...
  22. Oops! Sorry for asking a question you'd already answered. Anyway, it looks like there's lots of interest.
  23. Looks like fun! Well, maybe not for the redcoat slaves, but... KB, you and your lookalikes are partying a bit hard for a staffer. Or is that what it's all about? Color me impressed with the scale and design. Glad to have you back.
  24. You two are nuts!! The perks of being a staff member... But seriously, that was a quick response. A little behind-the-scenes, perhaps? Good job - but you might want to remove the cape before going for a swim. I see the monkey is helping himself. Bottoms up!!
  25. Yay!! Another Pirates contest! (I mean "Ahoy!!!" Shiver me timbers! Fetch aft the rum, Darby! ARGH!!!) Ugh. I might have to stay off the forum for awhile... [runs to bathroom with hands over mouth only to find bloodthirsty pirate hiding in the toilet] I assume the 16x16 size limitation is really 256 studs in any configuration? I could build an irregular base, or does it mean only a 16x16 square? I get that this is about pirates carrying out violent acts, but does it mean they have to be attacking law-abiding people or could I show one pirate band attacking (slaughtering) a rival pirate village? Rule 19 refers to the "spirit of the contest" but the nature of the victims isn't mentioned. Just curious. I may not be able to enter due to being busy with a certain... well, you know... "Them that dies will be the lucky ones." - Long John Silver in "Treasure Island"
