  1. Lovely island, if an active volcano can be called such. Man, the whole islander population has gone man-hungry lately. Must be revenge from the pirates stealing all their gold. There's brutality aplenty and the lava flow looks great. Good job with the posing and bloodshed. I think it's a good idea to keep the island intact - it's too good to destroy right away. Nice work.
  2. This clever creation makes excellent use of the available space. It's funny and sad all at the same time. The story room looks nice and the rocking chair is magnificent. I await the day when the classic monkey returns. Good work.
  3. Good story-telling as usual, and nice job on the build too. The building looks fantastic and fits perfectly with that trademarked base technique of yours. It's all very well textured without being overdone. I like your assortment of non-Pirates minifigs too. I've wanted to do that same type of thing for more variety but I've always wondered how well it would be accepted. The pirate captain's torso looked clownish when I first saw it in the official set but it looks great on him; I'll have to try something similar with my two. Oh, and one more thing - yellow is great! Sure, the flesh colors are nice but good ol' classic yellow still looks fine. Good work.
  4. This is a wonderful town layout with enough variety to keep the eye busy for a while. You've used lots of good techniques and colors, and the streets are brilliant. The size is nice too - big enough to be marvelous but not gigantic. I'm impressed with the whole of it, and your fountain looks perfect with the trans-blue dishes for water. Excellent work. I think there's too much of a knee-jerk reaction to the subject matter. Sure, slavery was unsavory, brutal and dehumanizing. But the same is true of murder, torture, and rape - all employed by pirates at various times, and occasionally by ordinary civilians as well. I think the biggest issue for most people is race rather than slavery, and a desire to be politically correct. But I see no sense in trying to whitewash history - it happened, we can't change it, but we can learn from it. Depicting that time period fully requires some reference to slavery, at which point historic accuracy is the determining factor. As for the contest, this is perhaps the best all-around entry but it is somewhat lacking in the "Out for Blood" part beyond implied violence. Very good entry and excellent work.
  5. This is a unique entry from the factions to the location. The action is really good, and things like the hat flying off give it a great sense of motion. I like the angle of the two main sections and the snow on the ground gives it a completely different feel. Good work.
  6. Your "short" story is beautifully written and the scene illustrates the ending quite well. The posing of the loser is great, but he'd look better with a hairpiece too. The ground texture is nice and the design of those Technic palm trees is slowly growing on me. That hole full of blood is serious stuff. Good work - now all you need to do is illustrate some more of the story...
  7. Who doesn't enjoy watching ships sink? Har har. To be serious, this is a very good execution of a common occurrence during the age of sail (sinking, that is; methinks scuttling was just one way of doing it). The whole design is nice, especially the clever crack, and it's all told quite well. Good work.
  8. This is a creative use of the limited amount of space. The ship portion looks pretty good, but the underwater portion is fantastic. Those vibrant colors make it look so real I want to reach out and touch it. You've made good use of parts, too - the colorful hairbrushes, hairpieces, even the big mask/headdress piece. That's possibly the best underwater build I've seen yet. Very good work.
  9. The first version was pretty good but the updated version fits the contest so much better. You've got a little bit of everything going on, and I can just imagine something like this actually happening. The gallows look suitable for multiple hangings and the posing gives it a great sense of action. Good work.
  10. Now squishing pirates is one use of the big skull motif that I approve of (as long as it's not the Evil Captain Phred). The two different renders are interesting; I like the colors better on the first and the smoother appearance better on the second.
  11. This is a classic idea and the color combination is excellent. I like that roof technique and the gallows design is really smooth and clean. Overall this makes good use of the size restriction but I'd like to see it built bigger as well. Good work - and good riddance to those filthy sea rats.
  12. This entry takes the contest title a bit more literally than most, and it's a great one at that. The built-up area around the docks gives it a larger presence and the different buildings look great. There's a wonderful variety of material and the level of detail fills things out nicely. The minifig posing pretty well tells the tale without a big story. I like the overturned box of bananas, and the whole scene is well balanced. Good work.
  13. This is indeed a clean build - perhaps too clean. A few more details would be nice. But the minifigs and water are both done really well. I'd like to see you do more pirate material.
  14. That's a cool tower design and I like the fact that the rooms are so accessible. There's lots of pirate action going on. I like the waterspout in the boat and the two unfortunate souls up top face a tough choice. Good entry.
  15. The ship is lovely (well, apart from the skull railing, which looks sinister) and the crew is excellent as well. I think an older type of ship would suit them better, but then I suppose historic accuracy wasn't your overall goal. That combination of colors looks great for both the ship and the crew. Great work and congrats on the frontpage appearance.
  16. Captain Bart looks like a younger and slightly more intact Captain Redbeard. I like the tower and the posing is really good. The squid does look a little odd to me but I realize the size restriction makes those types of things difficult. Good idea and nice work.
  17. This is a creative entry, but unfortunately it doesn't show much of the "Out for Blood" unless you count the bone he's carrying. My sigfig wears that same coat, so I suppose he'd better lay low till they catch this bird... Anyway, this is a unique take on the contest.
  18. There sure are a lot of cannibal islanders around these parts lately. I like the tower design - especially the roof - and the bloodshed certainly fits the contest. The chest full of parts strikes me funny the way the arms are reaching out. Good entry.
  19. Hmm... good thing I wasn't on the preselection committee, because none of the entries had me questioning anyone's sanity. Dang it, I should've entered after all. You all would've had me committed somewhere... Actually, KB did call me a madman. If only he knew... Anyway, this was a great contest that definitely pulled in some not-so-regulars, which is always a good thing. Congrats to everyone on a job well done.
  20. Excellent turnout and lots of good entries. Decisions, decisions... Large Cate"gory" H 1 K 1 L 1 Small Category A 1 G 1 L 1 Digital Category A 1 C 1 E 1 Whew... that's a lot of blood, guts, brains, and gore. Now where is my mop?
  21. Simply splendid - and proof that a few basic parts and a little creativity can yield beautiful results. The architecture is lovely and the different colors of the plants looks great. Good work, and good choice of subject matter. I'd like to see more of them.
  22. This is a humorously grim and creative take on the contest. The minifig posing is great, and the pirate strolling along chatting on the phone, cool as a cucumber, is funny. The dock and crane look great, and the tavern is pretty good, although fewer colors in the roof might look a little better. Nice work.
  23. The rockwork and vegetation are phenomenal, and the overall design is really neat and clean. The minifigs are fine even if they aren't from the Pirates theme. This is a creative take on the contest and looks similar to an idea I had involving lots of axes and an iron furnace... One thing that puzzles me is how a lone pirate with one hand and one leg could force those men over the edge - unless they'd been tied up first. A few more pirates would make it more convincing. Good work and good job depicting "Out for Blood."
  24. This arrangement looks great. Of course that's what Lego intended but your version looks a lot better built up on the rocks like that. I feel the entire line of sets would've been better if the fort and outpost were one set (as shown) and the outpost was replaced by something else. What they call a fort isn't that much bigger than the old Imperial Outpost and is notably smaller than the other fort sets. But back on track: this is nicely balanced, and the one cannon looks so much better than the two side-by-side if you combine the two sets as intended. Nice job.
  25. You can't go wrong with ships and lots of action. There's so much going on you really have to look close to take it all in. And in the nature of the contest it looks suitably violent. Nice entry.
