Heroica RPG - Quest #136: The Sorcerer's Stone
Enceladus replied to Purpearljellyblob's topic in The Heroica Archive
"Easier said than done, master Charion!" jokes Na'im with an akward shrug and a smile. It was clear that he had to get over his humiliation and loss of face at the moat "Listen..would you be willing to do a simple favour for a friend? You see, there may be a party of were-snakes arriving in Feanrio in the next few days...I will be checking back here tomorrow but...if any were-snakes do try and cross the moat overnight or during the day would you mind informing me when I come back?" asks Na'im "I would not have done anything differently in their situation" says Na'im firmly "A life under seige dose that to you...forces you to think like everyone is an enemy, but like I said, we should stick together and keep our wits about us-master Elnath, here, take this and put it in your pouch." Na'im hands Elanth his Opal "Its approximalty the same size and colour as the Nerksatone and might fool any potential theives. Oh, and I'll be wanting it back-that is, if it dosen't get stolen first." "It all seems very clear to me Lady Bain. But two things continue to prey on my mind: for how many days are we permitted to stay at the black phoinex, and then who are these sources you mention-I would be terrible for us to get the wrong idea and think you have been conversing with the were-snake miscreants." Na'ims tone is pleasent but you do get the hint that despite how it may appear, he never really dose trust anyone Na'im bows to Bain "My thanks for everything you have done for us. I hope we part as friends and allies now, not strangers. And as for the weresnakes...I assume they meant exactly what they said they meant. They are clearly looking for a crew for a long and ardous voyage." Na'im turns to Elnath "I shall have to check the great library's charts, but if memory serves me well, then it should be quite possible for a moderatly provsioned ship to sail from Fenario to Nagashan in good time, would it not?" Having said this, Na'im takes a look around the marketplace and observes the wares that are on offer Na'im bows mockingly "Your wish is my command my lady!" -

Na'ims face flushes with suppressed rage but at in an instant it is gone and he joins the boatman in laughing, albeit a bit too loudly "Bravo I say master Charion! 'Tis always a pleasure to meet another of similar wit and cunning! You my rest assured that we are no friends of the star elves and no threat to the Fenari. Here take this from me in return for your generosity." Na'im presses a potion into his hands "And the palace and great library master..." inquires Na'im "For truly I desire to see your Lord Angmar-I have some information on the Star Elves that may be of interest to his highness, but all in good time I suppose." Na'im bows in thanks to the gaurd and adjusts his hat to hide his face better "So be it." says Na'im with a nod "But if anything I strongly reccomend that we stick together...only a fool would call the cities of Fenario entirely safe, and only a madman would be seen walking around one alone." he adds cautiously -

"Naturally my friend. Indeed, even if it were not, your fine vessel is the only means by which I would even considor crossing the moat." Na'im snaps shut his pocket watch and steps aboard the boat "I have had buiness with the Orcish clans in the north of Baltarok." Na'im says briskly without a trace of hesitation in his voice "Lord Angmar dispatched me their to see if I could conduct an alliance with the border clans-food for protection from the star elf menace and the like. Now however, I have seen fit to return and report back on how we stand to the good lord Angmar. If nothing else my friend, I would greatly appreciate it if you pemitted the Orcish emissary, the Lady Miderun, my bodygaurds; the masters Van Cleef, Mihnak, Germ, Bucks and their commander the Lady Nayasto safe passage across yonder moat as well. I may even be able to put in a good word with the Lord Angmar if you do..." Na'im pauses expectantly He always had considored himself a fine liar -

Na'im glances strangley at Mihnak "I would hate to know what the goats are lke around where you come from master Mihnak." On impulse Na'im checks his boots for any sign of muck "Strongest and smartest master Mihnak." interjects Na'im "Do I look like some kind of barbarian champion to you? But of course lady Kiray seems to have her own ideas about getting across, and I really think you should factor them into your offer friend." calls Na'im ot the boatman -

"It appears young master Bucks, that the Fenarians have taken notice of the star elf troops movements on the edge of the mountains and have decided to delcare war pre-emptively as a precaution. And as for why we are here...Fenario is not called the 'land of eternal darkness' for nothing you know-it is home to many miscreants, criminals and others who have taken reufge here from the authoities or their own kin. There is a good chance we will find the were-snake theives here." "There's some truth in that." acknowledges Na'im "But the piont is that it look intimidating master Mihnak..." says Na'im slowly as if Mihnak is complelty missing the piont "It would look a bit foolish with a fairy tale tower would it not?" Na'im chuckles and shakes his head "That's a fools price! You didn't honestly think we would pay that did you? No...well let me put it this way: We have a multitude of options to get across: we could swim, get master Van Cleef to freeze a bridge across the moat using his opal...whereas you do not, if you want our coin. So if I were you I would start thinking of a better offer..." Na'im makes a show of checking his pocket watch and shifting his feet impatiently "You know, I think we'd better start looking for another way across in a second my friends." says Na'im with a pionted look at the boatman -

"That is heartening friend say Na'im with a sigh. He remains watchful as the lights of Fenario come into greater prominence "Just as it looked when I left..." says Na'im in an odd voice and he pulls his hat lower to hide his features as the other dragon approaches, remaining silent throughout the confrontation "God speed master Eckmar, lady Bain. We shall see you on the other side" he says in a hollow voice. In truth, he had never felt so alone and so apprehensive in all his years. Here he was doing the impossible, what he swore never to do when he left Fenario for what he thought would be the last time. "The gates of Fenario was not built for entertaining guests, master Mihnak. Elagent they are not, but they do form the perfect bastion-I have heard that the wizard priests of Ennoc were inspired by our own fortifications when they built their famous fortresses durig the Orcish wars But you are a dwarf master Mihnak-do you not think there is some elagence in the sheer functiolity of the structure? Those gates have never been stormed, and Fenario itself has never been conquored you know." Na'im speaks with a hint of pride in his ovice "But perhaps we should concentrate on getting through those gates first master Mihnak, before we start planning itineries." suggests Na'im "Please, allow me to handle this." "Fancy doing a favour for a fellow Fenarian and ferrying me and my companions across yonder moat, friend? Says Na'im in a friendly voice "I dare say you will get a chance to stretch your rowing muscles if you do" says Na'im with a wink -

"The group you comanded me to heal of course. It would be sacriligeous, to risk my position and the possibility of one day becoming a cleric in full, for a smidge of compassion on failed criminals. There are times in life master Minhak when you have to play by the rules. Put your own thoughts and impulses to the side for a while, and wait untill the morals are more murky to act descively. I have lived for more than two thousand years master Mihnak and if there is one thing I have learnt, it is how to be patient." "Do you seek ot irk me master Mihnak?" Na'im snaps "We did not steal the Nerkastones, but merely found them underground, some would argue by divine intervention-and I was one of them-untill I saw how blinded we all were. So to call us theives is inaccurate. Yet, if it was our traditional way of live to live under a corrupt couicil dominated by the House of Alpieth, then I suppose it is accurate to call us rebels, but I prefer the term freedom fighters. But there is precoius little alive in Spelesia ouside of the sealed capitol. Razing the Krimwood to fulfill an old grudge would acheive nothing. Nothing at all." Na'im gulps down some more air as his head starts to swim from too much talking and retreats into a brooding silence, but first calls to Eckamr: "How much longer untill we reach Fenario? My soul weary of this relentless journey." -

"It was all rather unclear master Germ...I think I was drugged at the time, but I remember some kind of ritual being conducted in Nornish...all the veterans were there I think, which is why I was drugged, for the veterans are wily and do not reveal their identities lighlty...they asked me some soem questions and told me to repeat an oath, whose exact words escape me.... Then when the ritual was over, I woke up a few streets away, and I felt different somehow..stronger. It was all very strange now that I think back to it." "A little talking won't kill him Lady Bain." chides Na'im "Your Fiancee's condition seems stable enough for now. At any rate, the Trine will have a soloution to your condition I am sure master Eckmar." says Na'im confidently "But this matter is urgent and is one that concerns all Fenarians everywhere-even those outside of Spelesia may be affected. Now tell me, I left Fenario several centuries ago: how fare Fenarian politics in this day and age?" "Well for starters, tossing me a bone won't bring me over to your cause." says Na'im with a grin "But in all seriousness master Mihnak, if everyone followed their own insincts in combat, there would be chaos." says Na'im as if Mihnak had said something very stupid "Nothing would get done, and we woud be picked off one by one. No, there has to be order and at the end of the day, in combat, someone has to be in overall command, and I am willing to sacrifice my own liberties for a few minutes in combat if it makes the difference between winning or losing. Life or death." "But master Mihnak what reason would we Fenarians have to destroy the forests in the first place? Ever since our incpetion, we Fenarians have been sidelined and cast as murderers and insurgents , but there are many of us; housewives, traders, smiths, scholars, who were forced underground, just because they believed in an ideal-justice for the Alphieth's abuse of power-in the same way that you yourself believe in the security of the forest. Granted the guardians fought alongside the Alphieth in the Schism, but so long as they remain neutral, we have no conflict with them, only with the star elves, and even then with the Queen herself and her ruling council. We Fenarians represent justice Master Mhinak, not mindless destruction of everything this side of the Fenarian mountains." Na'im shifts very slightly in his seat and turns to listen as Miderun and Kiray's conversation turns to the wolfgang but holds his tounge for now -

"Not my call master Mihnak." says Na'im steadily "It was Lady Miderun called the shots, not me master Mihnak, and I trust her judgment. Their are time master Mihna when as a leader, you have to pretend you are commanding a band of strangers whom you care nothing for, and dictate their actions through cold-hearted necessity and reason. Sometimes; master Mihnak you cannot allow your feelings to get in the way, and that is something you have yet to grasp." "A headhunter I suppose master Germ." says Na'im without hesitation "Life is for living well and making the most of. I may have squandered my wealth, and commited some bad acts in my time, but I have enjoyed my time on Olegia and if I die, I will leave this world with no regrets. Yet, if someone can convince me that I will benfit from helping in a certain venture, then there is a good chance I will participate. Those are my principles-judge them as you will, but they have served me well for centuries." Na'im returns to staring down at one of Girgolis' scales "Do you wish to know why I joined Heroica master Germ? Well, I have been to most every nation and traversed all the seas of Olegia in my travels, but never have I seen anything quite like the Heroes of Heroica. Are you mere mercenaries? Heroes, as you claim? Or something else entirely? That is why I came to Eubric many months ago and then it struck me: to understand how a Heroican thinks, I must become one. So I took the oath, and here I am today but I remain no closer to reaching my goal of understanding than I was when I first joined the ranks of this organsiation." Na'im pauses and takes a deep breath, trying to dispell his nausea "That is why your story struck a chord within me I think-it has so many paralells with my own life story. But pray master Germ: you did not mention which category you fall under!" "Terrible?! That's an understatement Lady Miderun! 'Tis an abomination...a crime...an atrocity against the house of Fenari and its allies!" Na'im risks a glace around "Here read this" he says to Bain and Eckmar, and passes the parchments over to them -

"Ah...Olegia seems so much smaller these days...when everybody seems to be old friends...or colleauges." says Na'im weakly "Hate you my dear Germ...nay, nothing you have done in all my brief time knowing you has made me hate you master Germ...unlike some people...why should any of us here hate you?" aks Na'im, still staring at Girgolis's scales -

"You say you 'didn't' like heights, which I take to mean that you don't mind them now? What did you do to help you overcome your fear of heights?" says Na'im weakly not daring to look directly over his shoulder at Kiray Na'im may not be able to see Mihnak, but he can feel the weight of his glare upon the back of his head and says loudly "If you did not notice master Mihnak, it was I who revived you in the first place, and though I am sure you would have come around eventually, I chose to do so just so you could get the experience of being part of the party who took down those spectres-and if I may say so myself-it was my worst use of 50 gold in my life! It is hardly my fault if you stupidly decide to go charging a foe who is blatently too tough for you and go down in the first ten seconds of our confrontation! Gold dosen't grow on trees you know master Mihnak! Now if you'll excuse me, I think it would be best if we continued this argument when I do not feel like my insides are about to come out." Na'im says firmly effectively cutting off their conversation, and he remains hunched over the neck spike, concentrating on one of Girgolis scales to the exclusion of all else in an effort to stop himself throwing up -

Na'ims stomach lurchs as Girgolis starts to climb "No, oh no master Eckmar!" he moans "Give me a sailing ship any day! The relams of the sky should be reserved for were-eagles and the rito, not for us creatures of the earth-Lord Girgolis will catch us if we fall won't he master Eckmar?" says Na'im in a panicked voice keeping his eyes screwed tight shut and his hands clenched around one of Girgolis back spikes "That they are Lady Nayasto, but I dare say your perspective changes when you are flying on one! Look how high up we are Lady Nayasto! Even Lord Girgolis seems somewhat puny and insignifcant up here, and if we fell off now, the General Oswain would have to be content with a bloody smear to bury!" says Na'im in a high pitched and slighlty ludicrous voice "I don't like heights." he admits, somewhat abashed, to Kiray. It was probaly the most honest and personal thing he had ever revealed about himself in a long time "Hand it over here master Germ." says Na'im, snatching the parchments off him and satrting to read "I need something to do, to stop me remembering how high up we are." Na'im is a fast reader but it still takes him a few minutes to finish reading the report. When he is done, he curses violently in Fenarian and thrusts the parchment wordlessly into Miderun's hands -

"What will be, will be Lord Girgolis. There is nothing we can do now but let fate take its course." says Na'im simply but even he sounds a bit uncertain at hearing the elder dragon scold them for their actions like children What had they done? "I'm a material man and I always have been master Eckmar, what can I say?" says Na'im with a shrug "But that is an awful lot of faith you want us to put in Lord Girgolis and yourself master Eckmar. You seem like a honourable sort and I have not known a dragon to lie outright, but this is not a kind day and age, where people where wear their allegiances on their sleeves. Where do you plan to take us master Eckamr?" "We have precious little time young master Bucks." says Na'im through gritted teeth. He pulls out an ornate pocketwatch from within the folds of his cloak and exhales "Let us give the others one more minute to redenvous with us before we leave, what do you say Lady Miderun?" -

"That is a story for another time I think master Eckmar." says Na'im nervously Was it his imagination or was that the sound of elven hobnail boots on the courtyard above him? "We have to leave now. Master Eckmar did you bring any equipment with you on your journey to the surface-it would not do any good to leave that to the star elves. Young master bucks here is much swifter than I, and he could probaly retrieve them before we leave. At any rate we need to find Germ...and master Mihnak if elects to remain with us. Lady Bain, I have a multitude ideas ot treat Eckmar's condition, but I need more time and preferably be some place safer-how did this abomination come about by the way?" "And the land of eternal darkness; must it really come to that master Eckmar?" say Na'im heavily "I swore an oath that I would never return there you know." Na'im stows away the book and heals the party back to full health "Never fear Lord Girgolis. Over confidence has been the death of many a champion, but to my knowledge humblness has not. Better to play it safe, than to rashly rush into matters, you know little of would you not agree Lord Girgolis?" says Na'im in a somewhat subdued but satisfied voice. Even the cynical cleric struggles to hide his awe at the spectacle of an elder dragon at full strength -

"Oh please your just embarrasing yourself now." says Na'im sarcastically as he struggles not to laugh at the bizzare spctres "I told you I would come to finish the job I started back under the brotherhood of the red angel, and it seems I was correct-and I have little reason things will be any different if you decide to return again." Finishing the brotherhood's work, even though it was only a temporary stall on the spectres felt good. Back in the days when he fought alongside the brotherhood everything was so simple-there were orders from above to be carried out and he felt like he was actually doing some good in the world. There were days when he wildly condisored returning to Fenario to rejoin the brotherhood, but he was an outcast now and that life was long behind him "Oh yes thats right just run off why don't you? I chose to bring you back from the brink of death and you have the cheek to storm out on us once again! What an ungrateful wretch." fumes Na'im kicking his empty phoeinex essence down the passage and into the gloom and then rounds on Inki "Well? Are you following your insolent master or staying here with us Feline?" he demands "I fear lady Bain is right. I have had more than my fair share of bad experiences in subterran Spelesia in my times. But what I wouldn't give to wok out where yonder weresnake was going..." says Na'im with a sigh, casting his eyes around hopefully just in case he had only temporarily abandoned the scene "Master Eckmar its is indeed a great pleasure to finally meet you. I am Na'im Thamir, at your service, and these are my colleauges, the Lady Miderun, master Bobby Bucks Jr, Lady Kiray Nayasto and our employer Elnath Van Cleef, the prospector. It would have been our other accosiate master Germ who managed to rescue you, though for the life of me I cannot work out what he has got himself into now, and why he has not returned." The rucus above them jolts Na'im back to reality. "Now about your dragon master Eckmar. I am no spell weaver but there are detlails of a simple charm in this book that should be able to release the ethreal bonds around Lord Girgolis." Na'im dose not voice his own misgivings about the wording of the spell and turns to Girgolis "Lord Girgolis I will now attempt to free you, though I beg you to hold still and remain calm. Breaking ethreal bonds can be a...delicate buisness at the best of times." Na'im attempts to free Girgolis -

Says Na'im firmly "Perhaps you would in my position but at the end of the day, I am the one with etheric power, and it is to me you must defer on this matter. A multitude of possibilities could occur: I could send him into the void, vanish part of his body or even kill him outright. I am not the one to take unecessary risks lady Bain, trust me on that at least." Says Na'im slowly as he readjusts his hats position "Besides, since when was the objective not to dispose of these spectres quickly?" You and I both know you are no healer or sage-what would you be able to do if confronted by a dying eckmar?" Na'im shakes his head "Nothing. You will be of much better use here with us" -

Na'im targets Eudora from the back row with the nimbus deluxe OOC: I'll be over at a friends place this weekend so I may or may not be able to post. CMP had control over my actions if I don't post -
There has been some deep arguing going on around here about the position of the wolfgang and other political matters in Eubric, so I figured I might as well post some of my Na'ims thoughts on the issue here. Na'im thinks Eubric being a freeport is it's greatest asset. It makes it a haven for new ideas and forward thinking which has made it by and large, very wealthy, even if the wealth isn't very well distributed. Given that, Na'im would rather not have a king at all, but he understands the people of Eubric are frightened by the lack of order within Eubric, and want the protection of some kind of authority figure. However Na'im is afraid the wolfgang and what they represent, for the simple reason that he dosen't think a wolfgang government would be stable, and he doubts Ulric can live up to his promises of equality for all so sooner or later he will be dethroned by those very people who helped get him into power in the first place. Also Na'im thinks a communist style regime under Ulric would be a disaster for Eubrics economy. For that reason, Na'im will probaly be backing the Crescent union-they are a force for change, yes, which is what the people want but not too radical change either which Na'im doesn't want. He's still open though about whom to vote for King though and he is very open to pitches from proscpective kings....
