  1. It's this part: Brick, Modified 2 x 2 x 2/3 Two Studs, Curved Slope End (47457)
  2. I like the low version better. It has a clean an sturdy look that seems to be very suitable for a wide range of vehicles. The tall version looks like a chassis for one of those monster trucks. And unless you intend to build a monster truck, it would look out-of-place for most off-road vehicles. Also the "ridiculous steering" (your words ) would negatively affect the overall aesthetics of the vehicle (unless, I guess, it is going to be a monster truck). I'm also worried about the black links needing to handle the impact forces. I would be very worried about buckling or disconnecting form the ball joints.
  3. "I need to get one of those!"
  4. Finally I understand. I've read many times in various topics about "properly aligning the u-joints", but never realised the implications of it until I saw this video. Many thanks!
  5. I was just reminded of another thing, maybe not related to building per se: I can't throw away LEGO. I have cracked u-joints, cracked toggle joints, cracked bushes, pins with teeth marks, etc. that are not really useable anymore. Yet, I can't get myself to throwing them away, even when replacing them would only be a few euro's in total (even for the old-gray parts). Somewhere in the back of my head there is the argument "what if you want to rebuild those old sets?", even though I know that never is going to happen... (Recently, I did throw a few toothed half-bushes, since I have a ton of those, and some broken flex thingies that were really useless once broken.)
  6. Haha, I'm sure mine do as well. I know I do have quite some of these with teeth marks on the cross-axle part, which are no longer really usable but I can't get myself to discarding them.
  7. It wasn't until this thread that I realized that there are two types of the slotted pins, although I did observe that the pins in the sets I acquired after my dark ages seemed easier to pull out. If there's really a demand for those old ones, it might be worth some effort and sort out my collection, since I really only use the new ones.
  8. The mechanism for turning is so simple yet so effective. Was it a discovery by chance or did you have some intuition for it? The design of the entire walker is also wonderful. I love how the guns pop out in the rear
  9. This is great. Thanks Jim and TLG!
  10. Oh man, am I glad I'm not the only one wit OCD I do this. Also, I have to align the slits on bushes on both sides as well as multiple on a single axle. In addition, colours must match and I try to avoid mixing old grey and the newer LBG, but that is often impossible with a collection stemming from the 80s. I'm a bit colourblind, so I never really notice when I mix e.g. bushes old and new until I make a photo: the flash makes the difference stand out enormously. I've taken stuff apart to fix it...
  11. This is going to become one of those epic builds where you keep finding interesting things everywhere. It's a bit like those huge displays you'd find in the other forums, but then in Technic. Awesome. Just awesome! We'll reserve a spot in the HOF for this
  12. Thanks for those! I think I see some holiday project coming...!
  13. That is so cool...! I envy his house (I would love to get involved in GBCs, but I don't have any suitable balls. However, in the video, I got a glimpse of something that looks like a beam sorting device. Beams I have enough of )
  14. Just out of curiosity: does anyone here actually know Akiyuki? Either in person or having contact via the interwebs? This whole exercise, as awesome as it is, feels a tiny bit awkward without having him/her (?) involved, or at least aware...
  15. I agree it's implied, but I know this community here a bit now: if it isn't explicit, it will be argued. Or actually, it will be argued anyway
  16. Shouldn't there be a rule about part usage, i.e. A and B model must use the same parts? At least, that's what I remember from the discussion...
  17. I totally missed the progress on this: this is way awesome! I can't wait to see this finished!!
  18. Thanks for the encouragements I aimed a bit too high, I guess. I liked the truck, but really no time to finished it. The WIP pictures are indeed messy: I shot and posted them only to push myself to finish. I didn't feel like taking the time to set up for good photos. Also, the "Photo Booth" (read: kitchen) was not available at the time either But I can see that it was not a good first impression. The mounting of the cylinders was a struggle, because I couldn't find a good point on the boom to connect to. The ideal point was on the connection between two panels, which didn't work out (too weak). Next time I will first design the upper structure and then the boom to go with it, instead of the other way around as I did now. As for the frame: it is now indeed 4 studs for the frame and 4 studs for each outrigger. The frame is indeed very narrow and it was a real struggle to get all the functionality inside. I'm not sure how to make the outriggers 3 wide with the old pneumatic cylinders... I think I should have done a manual function instead of the pneumatic: it would have made the outriggers less bulky and less stuff to squeeze in the trailer itself. (Fun fact: the outriggers were first suppose to be of the traditional kind, but they were too bulky for that, so I decided to put them in the X-configuration). I think the main lesson here is that next time I should try to be less ambitious, meaning trying to not fit as many functions as possible inside, but focus on doing a few functions right
  19. I got 33 points, which is about 33 more than I expected Many thanks for the votes! I am, however, also curious to know what I should improve. As mentioned, I was reasonable happy with the technical part, but maybe it should be improved? Or is it mostly lacking good looks? I'm from the studded era, and this being my first studless build (mostly), it was a challenge. Any feedback is very much appreciated
  20. Congratulations to all! The entries were all very impressive! I agree it was hard. It was the first crane I built, and also my first studless build (except some cosmetic parts). I'm very honoured for the points I received, thanks!
  21. What if you define allowable extra parts? E.g., only pins and bushes and 1 beam. I see you're point, given that every single rule seems to be argued with in every contest, but it would also kind of suck to have to hide superfluous parts in your A-model because you need them in the B-model... Minor detail though, I wouldn't argue more if you stick with no extra parts allowed
  22. I think this is a great idea, I'd love to participate (although I first need to clean up from TC8... I'm not allowed to build until I clean up the LEGO desk ) Considering parts, I would also propose that the B model may use, say, 5 or 10 parts that are not in the A model, just like in LEGO sets. Of course, these parts should be big parts like panels, but maybe some pins or one or two beams.
  23. I think that is a great idea! Working with a part limit and requiring a sturdy and functional, playable model poses new challenges that are not often highlighted or even considered. (When building my TC8 entry I tried to keep it playable, but some parts turned out to be more fragile than I intended...) The box art may be a bit too much to ask for though. It would be sad to see great entries disqualified because the builder lacks the technical skills to create box art...
  24. Ok, here we go: 1: 10 12: 6 13: 4 2: 3 5: 2 15: 1 Difficult to choose, all entries are so impressive. Good luck to all! I had a lot of fun building my entry Crane building is hard though, that I learned
  25. I'm very curious to see the finished combination What are the pneumatic parts for? It appears that the inventory is not only for the trailer, but also includes part of the truck; is that intentional? For example, I see 10 wheels (only 4 on the trailer), a black cat (hood ornament for the truck), and more large arches than I can see on the trailer.
