Nicely Americanized. Could be the US entry at the Speed Champions course. However, if it is to be a GT class racer (based on a road car) it would need yellow headlights.

Jurassic World 2015 Rumors & Discussion
Bornin1980something replied to adotnamedstud's topic in LEGO Licensed
Who said the stego was the one with horns? Hasbro does a strange hybrid 'stegoceratops', but lego doesn't. The 'gallimimus' set is an annoying turn of events. We ask for a vegesaur, and we get a meatosaur imposter, a dino-wolf without even dino-sheep clothing. It may be the case that Lex's unanswered 'are those meatosaurs' question led to false rumours about the gallimimus. As I have said, the place to get lego herbivores is bricklink.- 1,412 replies

2015 Speed Champions Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Bornin1980something replied to CM4Sci's topic in LEGO Town
The McLaren P1 (because it's a McLaren, and British), and the 458 GT2 (because it's the only one in racing colours, and can compete with the lonely 60053 race car). If it had to be just one, it would be the 458, which I already have. I was thinking of avoiding the other two anyway. -
Would that be the stickers-over-assembly and the use of the Shell logo?

Jurassic World 2015 Rumors & Discussion
Bornin1980something replied to adotnamedstud's topic in LEGO Licensed
The new colour scheme is actually close to one described in the original Jurassic Park book, where the hats had blue logos and the tour vehicles were white. In the first film, the colour scheme was changed what might be called a 'mock safari' look, especially on the tour vehicles. They used camouflage tones, but in gloss paint (making the camouflage ineffective). It was part of the look of naive amusement park, Safari like on the surface but unprepared for the real dangers. The only book accurate vehicles in the first movie were the gas jeeps, which had a red stripe to prevent the Triceratops from charging them. Following the disastrous events of the first movie, it seems the builders of Jurassic World have gone for more subdued, purely practical look which may inspire more confidence. Also, some of the tour vehicles now have drivers, though I won't be surprised if the drivers die first! As for your last point, I think JP3's Spinosaurus was a mistake all along. The Indominus Rex should face the T Rex, and this time it would be a good adversary. I probably won't be buying the game, as it would involve investing in a whole new system and don't usually play adventure games. It looks very good, though, and I hope we will be seeing some of the items in actual sets. At least the game has a herbivore! I am amused by the debate over the colour of the dinosaurs. It can be said that the ones in the game are more natural looking or movie accurate, but they are probably just as inaccurate as the worst toys, as we do not know anything about real dinosaur colours. For the same reason, I am always amused by debates surrounding 'up to date' dinosaurs, as the real dinosaurs lived before our recorded history! Personally, I have always believed they looked entirely unlike any of our depictions, new or old! My Lego stego arrived about two weeks ago, replete in extinct shades of brown and gray! Here it is depriving Sarah Harding of her Brickon.- 1,412 replies

MOC: Classic Town Bike and Sidecar
Bornin1980something replied to Bornin1980something's topic in LEGO Town
^Interesting. Do any of those survive? And do you have any pictures? -
Another retro-built from the guy born in 1980-something: a classic bike (originally from 6644 Road Rebel/Road Racer Transporter) with sidecar. A couple of unusual facts about this build. Firstly, it was actually built during my dark age (If that's possible). This is the earliest known photograph of it, from 2008. At that time, I've rarely touched my old Lego, and never considered buying new Lego: since the modern 'City' products were still age rated 5 - 12, I assumed they would still be almost as simplified as the Town Jr range (I later found this was not the case but not before I had missed many great products). Still, this was one of the few projects I still wanted to work on and finish. To date, this might be the only project from the last decade I have managed to finish. Also, it was built without any knowledge of Lego's previous attempts to model sidecars. I was genuinely surprised to find that they had released a Sidecar set in 1978! Since sidecars, in reality, were old hat before I was born, it's not surprising that I missed all those models. I can assure you all, the design of this Sidecar is entirely my own. This photo of the Sidecar alone shows the connection I used, a 1×2 plate with hook (probably from a Res-Q set) attached to a modified tile on the side of the bike. However, I have found the hook and claw connection is stronger than the clutch power of the tile on the bike. Therefore, when the Sidecar is remove the tile comes off to! The Sidecar is a very compact build, with ten pieces in a very small space, not counting the wheel. It has been modified several times. While it had a rear light from the start, the headlight is most recent addition. I considered hanging the headlight outside for a more retro look, but I figured the setup was wide enough already, as it is already wider than most classic town vehicles! One advantage over most Lego vehicles, though: this setup can actually carry two people!

I believe both of the GT-One 'road cars' (there were only ever two!) went straight to museums in Germany and Japan, where they can still be seen. The same cannot be said of our Previa. It succumbed to a scrappage scheme in 2010, having done over 170,000 miles.

I was building the Exo-suit when I heard. I think science fiction as we know it owes a lot to Star Trek, and Star Trek owes a lot to Spock. I would like to say in this, my 47th post; while I was more of a 24th century era fan, I am under no illusions. Spock was the greatest character that Star Trek ever produced, and there never can nor should be a greater one. A lot of this is down to Nimoy's own proactive contribution to the character, which is all the more remarkable considering that he initially signed up to play a more generic 'half-Martian' character (Spock's logical persona was only established in the second pilot). All other alien regulars, in Star Trek and the likes of Babylon 5 and Andromeda, owe their existence to this man. As for his contribution to Lego; why else would Lego's most famous spaceman wear blue!

That was a scam! Toyota actually got round luggage space requirements by claiming the fuel tank served as luggage space! This struck me as ironic, as my family bought a Toyota Previa in 1994 precisely because it offered more luggage space than any rival. The GT-One's short and somewhat disappointing Le Mans career might be put down to the adage 'cheaters never prosper!' I actually have a working copy of Gran Turismo 2, and I have raced the GT-One road car. It can be tuned to an insanely high horsepower rating(over 970 hp in a game released in 2000). It's handling is very hard to master, particularly as it lacks some race car specific features. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't think a GT-One has ever actually been driven on the road!

It seems you saved the best for review on this site. This car is probably my favourite too, McLaren being one of the few British owned automotive success stories of recent years. Also, I have never been big into Porsches, and the McLaren is easily a better model than LaFerrari. A belated review, but certainly worth waiting for. You've certainly been meticulous in chronicling your build, though I believe it will take me much longer than 20 minutes (I have mild developmental dyspraxia). For me, the most intriguing aspect of this set is the minifigure. Firstly, he wears a race suit and helmet, but the car is clearly not actually a racer. Secondly, the suit bears a very strong resemblance to the classic town 'S' logo racing suit, the only distinct racing suit design TLG released in the 80s town line. By the way, how did you deeplink the images from the McLaren website. They certainly add to the review, showing a true real-world comparison to the model. However, I would not fault for model for inaccuracy, as I see Lego, particularly minifig scale, as an abstract modelling medium. I like the way they did real-world cars in minifig scale this time, even with all the compromises that brings. If I were to buy only one speed champions set, it would almost certainly be this one.

Jurassic World 2015 Rumors & Discussion
Bornin1980something replied to adotnamedstud's topic in LEGO Licensed
Even if the Indominus rex had wings, it would not be able to fly because of its sheer size. No flying creature was even come close to that size. Every time something doubles in size, its weight increases by a factor of eight! Also, I think the arguments over what is and is not a dinosaur is rendered moot by the Indominus rex, as it uses DNA from several non-dinosaur animals. Its monster like aggression, 'killing for sport,' is nothing new to the franchise. Much as the original dinosaurs were supposed to be like animals rather than monsters, the book had this to say about velociraptors: "They were instinctive hunters, and they never passed up prey. They killed even when they weren't hungry. They killed for pleasure of killing.(Michael Crichton, Jurassic Park, 1990. Emphasis mine)" If anything, the original movie actually toned down the monsterous aspects. Now they are back with a vengeance. I just recently watched the second movie. There are more herbivores than in the first, and they show more realistic animallike aggression. However, all the confirmed deaths are still at the hands of carnivores. That said, the herbivores certainly caused a lot of destruction when released into the camp. My personal highlight, however, was probably the pachycephalosaurus (thick headed lizard) head-butting a cruel hunter! That species is underrepresented across dinosaur toy lines. I have been doing some further searches on Bricklink. I found that many of the 'Dinosaur Island' dinosaurs, from 2000, are actually going quite cheaply. I have ordered a stegosaurus. By the way, VictorFrenchFries are you also a fan of Highway to Heaven, the show from which Jurassic Park stole its theme tune! In the book, they try to put some sort of control or tracking collars on the raptors, and they promptly chew the collars off!- 1,412 replies

This must be the most underappreciated model on the site. Possibility the most accurate minifig scale vehicle I have ever seen. Great use of only existing lego parts toproduce an uuncompromising military look. Still, the most innovative feature may still be the back seat.

2015 Speed Champions Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Bornin1980something replied to CM4Sci's topic in LEGO Town
Good video reviews, 'j2g', but can you turn them into pictorial reviews, each with their own thread? The pictures are already good enough. -
Amazing recreation, closer to source material than the winner, IMO. By the way, why was this thread moved?

Jurassic World 2015 Rumors & Discussion
Bornin1980something replied to adotnamedstud's topic in LEGO Licensed
The set I was most anticipating, based on the Brickset review, was the Raptor Rampage. Now we have the images, I think the most attractive set is the Dilophosaurus Ambush. Remembering that toys are not necessarily slavish re-creations of movie scenes (the original Kenner Jurassic Park toys were almost never accurate), this set appears to be based on scenes from the new movie and the first movie. The Jeep like vehicle is in new movie colours, but with its front winch it could easily be used to reenact Dennis Nedry's final scene. I was also pleasantly surprised to see a gyrosphere in one of the cheaper sets, as the Indominus Rex Breakout is probably beyond my Lego budget. I'm also interested to see that the kid is represented by a full minifigure, rather than a short legged figure. I was surprised by criticism of the truck in the Raptor Rampage, as I think it is an amazingly accurate representation of the real vehicle, considering it is made out of Lego. It is a great impression of a Unimog, while I suppose the back end could be modified. I would love to see at alongside the cutesy Friends Vet Ambulance some time! The T Rex Tracker appears to be based on the Triceratops Trapper from the 2012 dino line. It might be a hypothetical impression of how the T Rex was recaptured from the ruins of Jurassic Park. Personally, I think having her back in captivity is a bit of a happy ending override. I would love to see her get out again! Of the dinosaurs, the raptors are certainly large! They are not quite as oversize as the name raptor implies, as Jurassic Park's raptors were always more like a larger (but not that large) dinosaur officially classified as Deinonychus, meaning terrible claw (actually an appropriate name in context). The best of these dinos are probably the Dilophosaurus and the T Rex. I still fear the movie might become a monster movie with too much focus on the I-Rex. Yes, despite my somewhat harsh words, I believe it was a mistake to miss out the herbivores entirely from this range. They could at least of revived the old Triceratops mould, as that dinosaur would be appearing in the movie, appeared in the earlier movies, and is also a potential adversary for meat eaters. Also, some scientists now believe that they were omnivorous! I am only really familiar with the first Jurassic Park movie, which I believe made the old mistake of casting herbivores as good animals and carnivores as bad animals, a belief which, in real life, led to the culling of wolves at Yellowstone National Park. I believe the second movie featured some herbivore attacks, but according to the Horror Film wiki all actual deaths were at the hands (or terrible claws) of carnivores. Same is true for the third movie, and though I am a little nervous about massive deaths, I kind of hope this will be the first JP movie to featured death by herbivore. In particular, the Gyrosphere is too slow to survival a stampede, and who in their right mind would tickle a Triceratops behind its frill? While the Lego line doesn't feature any herbivores at the moment, the Hasbro line actually features a 'Stegoceratops,' an unlikely hybrid dinosaur which is actually similar to one featured in the 1983 fantasy Yor, The Hunter From The Future (where it attacks humans). Lego did actually ones do a line of individual dinosaurs in 2001, including a Brachiosaurus, several babies, and a small Mosasaurus. These are now rare, but can be surprisingly reasonably priced (at the moment). I'd say get them while you can! Bricklink In the meantime, I've been experimenting with combining a couple of dinosaurs from the Schleich range with Lego figures. While the ones I chose might be a little small, they could represent a younger dinosaurs if used alongside Lego (the largest dinosaurs found were probably very old). Sensible use of toys like this might help kids and Lego fans create their own version of a Jurassic Park. I still think Lego should be more about creativity than action toys! Everybody walk the dinosaur! Looks gentle, till it sneezes! If you could sleep that deep, honey, you'll be dead.- 1,412 replies

Eh? Two aircraft and one ship, compared to at least four submersible craft? Divers in every set. If anything, there is more underwater content than you would get in real life! It's not Aquazone.

A good, more realistic update of 60053, adding much more detail without a notable increase in size. One change I would make, though; on an LMP (Le-Mans Prototype) car, the headlights should be white. Yellow headlights are used on the slower GT cars, allowing the drivers and officials to tell the difference during a race. The Speed Champions sportscars are all GTs, while 60053 itself appears to be a compromise, with both types of light!

Is LEGO dying?
Bornin1980something replied to LegoGunInstructions's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Interesting that one of the new licensed lines is Jurassic World - a movie about failing to learn from past mistakes. -
Thank you all. I never expected to receive seven replies for such a small and simple model. Maybe product placement in 'Where Are My Pants' is the way to go! The original idea came from the hinged bonnet often used by Lego in the 80s. Unfortunately, such sets were no longer sold by the time I started collecting as a child. I first saw it at school, in a set enjoying a second life in the educational 'Dacta' range (6660 Hook & Haul Wrecker). Frustrated at missing the feature first time round, I eventually determined to give my Lego vehicles accessible engines whenever possible. It was only after I completed the model that I found it was also useful as a way of loading the driver (since the hinged roof is no longer manufactured, I did not want to 'waste' any if I could possibly avoid it). You may have a point, especially as the 60s retro styling and red and yellow colour scheme hark back to an even earlier era. In truth, the smartphone was a late addition. I just didn't want the walkie-talkie hanging outside. I will still be mostly keeping the van as it is, but nothing is kraguled. The phone tile can be removed. For full classic town look, the CMF driver can also be replaced by a more generic figure. That said, I actually like to mix classic town and city as much as I can. I still hold on to belief that City is a legitimate continuation of Town (more so than Town Jr was). Since most Lego vehicles are not very detailed, and not based on specific prototypes, it is possible to mix them more freely than other models without so many worries about scale or era. As I said, this van is a kei van (or microvan) and I think it fits quite well among the modern vehicles without looking underscale. Here is the final photo I wanted to show, with the van in a modern City scene.

Lego Heartlake Friends Juice Bar Pneumatized (MOC)
Bornin1980something replied to bjorkan's topic in LEGO Town
This may count as MOD, rather than a MOC. That said, it is a very creative MOD. Who would've thought that the much maligned juice bar would inspire this level of creativity! Two questions, though; what set is the pneumatic system originally from, and how did you ensure that all the components are hygienically safe? Also, beware juice stains on Lego bricks, as in my experience they are hard to clean. -
Jurassic World 2015 Rumors & Discussion
Bornin1980something replied to adotnamedstud's topic in LEGO Licensed
The short answer is, they are probably using modern jeeps, which look a lot like old jeeps! For a longer answer, the vehicles I have seen in JW promotional pics look more like the Mercedes-Benz G Class, another off-roader which hasn't changed much in appearance in decades. Since both the Jeep and the G Class are designed for serious practical off-road use, keeping the outer styling up to date is not a priority. Both types of vehicle have seen a lot more development underneath. I thought that might happen. The 7726 truck is a good 8-wide representation of a unimog, which is what the vet's truck is. Now that 8-wide seems to have fallen out of favour in the City line (perhaps rightly), it's good to see that design finding in new home in the licensed line. Fact is, to the casual viewer Jurassic Park is about the ferocious meat eaters attacking humans. The first three movies all featured, as an early high point, a man being eaten by a Tyrannosaurus Rex. It takes a deeper level of fandom to fully appreciate the herbivores. While many AFOLs would show that level of appreciation, Lego is a children's toy, and in this case, they only produce a small core part of the merchandise. Lego fans looking for real depth would find it more in Lego's original lines. In other, disturbing news, a T Rex skeleton at a small research Institute has developed a more egalitarian taste in food, and eaten a woman.- 1,412 replies

Some new creations from the Farnheim Fire Services
Bornin1980something replied to Farnheim's topic in LEGO Town
Incredible! Perfect classic town look, but with more detail, and great use of pieces from all eras to make something even better. Most convincing tilt cab I have ever seen in Lego, how did you do it?
