Macabricks file storage question
SylvainLS replied to knotian's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
First, it was a joke, not a serious critique. I’m sure you do what’s possible for you (and to be sure I’m correctly understood: there’s no sarcasm here, you managed to produce a great tool and to offer reliable services, on a par with commercial tools). The part I quoted is just the sort of quotes the jinxing fairies are watching for. But all jokes also have an anchor in reality, so, considering your answer, I guess it hit a real nerve I don’t “preach” (which I will take in the meaning of “recommend earnestly,” not “give a sermon”, as I don’t feel religious about these things), I answer questions, inform, and correct misconceptions to the measure of my abilities and knowledge. I believe I have recommended people to try Mecabricks as often as I recommended them to try Studio (most often in the same sentence). Now, it’s true I prefer open formats, like LDraw, and am very prone to recommend them but then, first, their advantages are facts, not opinion or creed, and, second, you should know that’s one of the many points I fault Studio for, on this forum and others: their format isn’t open, they modified the LDraw format with no documentation, and without talking to the LDraw community. Truth is, I’m just like Grumpy (except for the beard, and the height, and being one who would try to be funny) but every “creed” believes I “preach” for the other one -

Mecabricks new flexible part tools

Not true anymore. Studio just added flexible parts support. The number of parts is limited for now but the UI and results are great -

Are you the one who posted about it on the Studio forum? Anyway, did you try changing the graphics level (in Appearance) in Studio? That level affects 1. the editor (the intended purpose), 2. the collision detection (a very nasty side effect), 3. the Eyesight renderer (another nasty side effect). The unwanted effects (2 and 3) have been reported and “fixed” several times

Lego models to .obj files
SylvainLS replied to knotian's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
And the other way around? Converting your generated landscape into a custom Studio part. Well, okay, Studio is a resource hog… LDD at least removes connected studs and simplifies the bottoms too (put enough round plates under any brick and you’ll see the brick “fillled”). -
Future of LDD on MacOS?
SylvainLS replied to NathanR's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
LEGO has abandonned LDD. Period. There’s no update on the Windows version either. The last updates were just part updates, for both OS. People have had problems installing it on Windows 10 too. You have several options now (or at least soonish): Install a virtual machine (Windows or MacOS) with an old version of the OS, but that could also become a(n even bigger) PITA in a few years when you won’t be able to easily find a VM that works for old versions of the OS. Migrate to another CAD, LDraw-based, like LDCad, LeoCAD, or even Studio, or not LDRaw-based, like MecaBricks, and use the internal LXF import features or other tools like lxf2ldr.html to convert your old LXF. -
Custom LDD bricks and fixes
SylvainLS replied to Equilibrium's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Not exactly. On the real bricks, the technic hole is at 5.72mm (ref. Jamie Berard’s presentation). LDD is just a bit more exact than LDraw. As for the different parts living together in LDD, we already have them with SNOT parts (centered at 5.6mm) and technic holes at 5.8mm: sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t as anyone who tried to make some official sets can attest (mix of half pins in technic holes and SNOT bricks, plates overhanging over parts attached to technic holes…). -

How to fine tune LDD part placement?
SylvainLS replied to NathanR's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
You could still export to LDraw, fine-place the part(s) in any LDraw editor, and then import…. -

No one got a “sorry, your submission was fine but didn’t make it to the finale, maybe next time”? Or even a “sorry, your submission was rejected because (guns|alcohol|…)”? I mean, you enter contests to test yourself and get feedback. Not just for the price. -

Thanks and, er, oopsie? Yes, a misktake in ldraw.xml. One of the parts that checked too quickly back then. I’ll correct it soonish (there’s already a couple new parts in the queue).

Hi all, I just released an extra portable version of lxf2ldr: lxf2ldr.html (still on gitlab, next to its brother, and also in GPLv3+). Yes, .html like in HTML/ECMAScript (aka JavaScript) but it’s totally local and self-contained! No compilation, no dependencies, no web server or arcane application (well, except for a d/recent web browser). Just download the zip (or tarball…), unpack it somewhere and open the file lxf2ldr.html in your browser. (See the senseless green/yellow coloured bar ? Click on the little cloud just below, on the right, just next to “Find File.”) Okay, okay, the look is spartan but it gets the job done. Tell me what you think… or not BTW, this is the initial release, I haven’t tested all the cases / stumbled upon all the of the language (two days on this and I know why I hadn’t touched JavaScript since the last century), so any issue, bug, glitch is welcome.

Using Hinge Align Tools problem
SylvainLS replied to mominbilal's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Or put a pin in the lime/green part, and set the angle between the new pin and the build to 0° (or 90°, or ±180°, or −90° depending on what you want).
