[HELP] Worm Gears or Normal Gears
bonox replied to PKW's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Whilst you might stand by your statement what you said was "ANY amount of lubrication" and I addressed that. You can never reduce the helix (or lead) angle to zero or you won't achieve anything, but tribology improves rapidly. In any case, I don't have to share any stupid negative coefficient with you (what a lunatic idea); we've already got back driving setups - would you care to enlighten us to your knowledge that materials science will not improve at all in future?- 19 replies

[HELP] Worm Gears or Normal Gears
bonox replied to PKW's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
not really - any helix angle is bigger than zero. All that remains is to get your lubrication and material properties good enough. Often a significant issue here relates not to choosing low friction pairs but in making one element, most often the gear, sacrificial to protect the one hardest to replace, most expensive etc. Multi-start worms are typically very easy to back drive. As a point of interest though, most worm drives are not made purely for efficiency and the oil ends up being used for cooling as much as direct lubrication.- 19 replies

[HELP] Worm Gears or Normal Gears
bonox replied to PKW's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The primary cause is that unlike a typical involute gear tooth profile which gives a rolling contact between faces, a worm gear operates purely under sliding motion between contact faces and hence lubrication is critical to a high performing worm gear set. This lubrication doesn't exist in lego and gives significant friction. It's also equally likely in lego though to be the lack of a low friction thrust bearing means a significant load ends up driving the worm or bush against the stop (frame/liftarm/technic brick etc) with a lot of friction involved. You'll get the same on any single helical cut gear pair as well.- 19 replies

Thanks for that. I have two copies of the puller, and i've never watched the videos because my player died about the same time that pvr's were taking off. I had no idea that TLG actually sponsored the construction of one of their Technic models. Has this ever happened before or since? -
"LEGO Ruins Creativity"... Again
bonox replied to PicnicBasketSam's topic in General LEGO Discussion
i love the way people ignore all the other benefits of construction toys - hand/eye coordination and motor function development are equally as brain developing as thinking of creative uses for things. Not to mention memory exercises of remembering where the last part you saw was in the pile of parts :) -

I don't visit this theme but found the link on the front page - a fabulous little interpretation - the detail is extraordinary and the lights really set it off. -
looks like a great experience - interesting way to get access to a company

[MOD] 42041 B tuning
bonox replied to Jurss's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
this thread looks like fun - let's give it some legs -
if you are not familiar with Technic and building mechanisms (looking at your brick type examples) or installing multiple modules together and trying to simultaneously align long buried shafts and a dozen pins I would suggest you don't start with gergers masterpiece and go for factory options instead. If you are familiar and want a challenge, it's a great one.

I'm putting this together at long last but have a question for the suspension: can anyone tell me what the model is like with the 4 hard spring (yellow) shocks at the rear compared to using soft spring variants? It's a heavy model and the lifting axle doesn't contribute to load carrying (doesn't maintain air pressure for long) - will it sit on its haunches with soft springs or maintain some lift?

42056 - Porsche Speculation

none (?) of the racers sets came with B models. The enzo, 599, the later grand prix cars. I can't remember if the first green F1 was a racer series, but it was the only one with a B model. The williams and ferrari versions don't have one. I think licensed sets are difficult to make B models for, as the second model would probably have to be something the same company also makes, within the same set of parts. Made sense given the breadth of equipment that volvo makes, but mercedes was pretty much the same truck (unimog and arocs) -
I'd like to see a musical instrument of some kind. A harpsichord style keyboard with action for example. Doesn't have to make a good tune, just demonstrate principles like most other sets. or something programmed as a tune with racks on a card like the old ideas set crane

i'm curious about the various colours. If I were making this, I'd do the entire underside in one colour, which means everything except the frames. Why the LBG panels and liftarms in limited locations for example? -
hands up if you remember trying to download them on a 9600baud modem! That's why they were not "proper" resolution.

good work, but it's going to be a tough act for many to follow with the use of the motorcycle springs -

it's no more expensive than the modulars, which are very arguably another adult focused series. The price doesn't really matter to what I think is most of the market. The limiting factor will be what the retailers see as the size of the market. If they don't order many, we might see an artificially high value because they won't ever go into sales. I saw this locally with the big tumbler. PPP means something if you're trying to sell by piece, or buy by piece. For those building, selling price per piece is meaningless. If the set contains unique parts, then buying cost doesn't mean much either, since you probably won't be buying it piecemeal for less than the cost of a whole set anyway.

my only hope, in relation to the serialisation of each unit, that it's not a limited run like the 41999. -

that tractor is amazing, but might be confused between CASE and Deere colouring . I don't need the claas after all. -

no suspension, gearbox or steering - would not buy. Again though, like the truck, it's model team rather than technic. Wheels that weren't frozen would help your cause too. -
Thanks for the heads-up. I'm now looking forward to the next instalment. :D It's wonderful to see a chap holding his nearly 40 year old design and still looking enthusiastic about it. They've obviously got some nice new shiny bricks for the photos - his looks much better than mine :P

I've always loved the multi-sets into one idea as an extension of the basic B model for any given set. TLG have some fun little ones, but NK probably took it to the limit :)
