Shipwrights Guild Hall (WIPs, feedback, and advice)
Legostone replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Glad you like that figurehead, I think it looks a bit too silly, but if it is this popular I guess I'll see if I can keep it as is:D Single stud wide keel works well with this building technique:D Thanks!:D Thanks! Now, to the main reason I wanted to post this (I totally forgot to do this earlier on): Getting the lines right on a ship can be difficult, especially working with plans. To get my lines as accurate as possible (although I usually just use them to get the basic shape) I can only recommend Sariels Scaling tool , it is pretty much self-explaining and works pretty well. To get the right scale just use the width of a gunport + the spacing you want between your gunports on the plan you are using. If you want to browse ship plans, I can only recommend the Gamelabs Forum's shipyard , there is a gigantic collection of them (with a different intended use, but that doesn't matter for us). -
Shipwrights Guild Hall (WIPs, feedback, and advice)

Well, a small image of the progress I made today won't hurt, wouldn't it? Not much text as I need to watch The Grand Tour now:P -
...Well, at least you have some spare parts, although your doctors don't seem to be the ones I would trust if my life would depend on them:D And why does he swing his axe up to the middle of the torso? He doesn't want to..., right?

Well, Example 3 seems to have more than two full gundecks, so maybe that is a more legitimate example? I was also wondering about that odd shaping on the first one I linked, it was just the first example I found when I started looking for this kind of SOTL a few weeks ago. So, let's go with a different nation for an example. The Venetian Fama, a 64 gun third rate (Well, Fregata Grossa, but with 64 guns it would be a third rate in more common terms) (actually the ship I was considering before finding the plans for the study on the lines on a Fregata Grossa): As usual, my source for ship plans. There are also some very interesting Xebecs there...:D -

@kurigan I think I actually gave Bregir the idea of a single decked cabin for a SOTL, it wasn't common for french and British ships, but it was somewhat common for the dutch ones. Here is an example, even though I don't remember which ship it was: (A couple more examples: First, Second, Third; source) @Bregir, @Captain Genaro Don't worry about the fishtail, it was just a drawing for the cabin position(I was also on really limited parts). It won't actually have that shape. I'll see how much I can get done over the weekend, I have a pretty decent plan how to do this already... -
I think I have seen it too, it looked just as great as it does here:D

Well, if you ask:P So, for your ship - I've told you a few times to try out some small different coloured parts for the quarterdeck and the forecastle, maybe regular blue as a light contrast. Maybe you'll listen now:P I'm also looking forward how you'll solve the lower part of the bow - I don't see yet how it'll go:P Also for the bow - you could definetly go up a bit in the curve for the bow, especially considering how you are building it. __________________________ So, now for me. I've recently stumbled over a plan of a Venetian Ship of the Line (Fregatta Grossa; if the link doesn't show a picture for you use this one; this drawing is just a concept drawing, the ship wasn't actually built), which I think is one of the most beautiful Ships of the Line I have seen so far. So, now see what I have so far. Well, technically I have most of the stuff in my mind, the only actual build part is a rough frame for seeing how big it'll end up. A few notes on it further down. So, a few facts about the hull (those might not be correct just yet, they are the calculated values and might be off on the brick drawing above). Total length from end to end (including stern and headrails) will be around 128 studs, with 5 studs between 2 wide gunports. Gundeck layout will be 26/26/12, so it'll be a 64 gun 3rd rate. Colourscheme will follow the Venetian one; the common yellow-black hull, but in this case with red gunports and further details. Expect a proper update sometime in about 1 1/2 weeks. -
The Empire of Oleon: Sign-up and Discussion

I know it! I know it! The king of Oleon is being replaced with a horse! -
It was said that the MRCA on Oct 15 was the last one with the old system, and considering that the new system hasn't been revealed I would guess it'll be quite a while until the next MRCA.

Forum Upgrade - One Month Later
Legostone replied to Bonaparte's topic in Forum Information and Help
Yes, I am getting used to it - all my issues (including that quote button :D) have been resolved since, and by now it works (at least for me) smooth as butter. Great work over the past month (I can't believe it has already been a month). Also, is the other smiley you used also new? I haven't seen that one before:P -
Hm, I still don't see sense in the order, it just seems random after the first place to me. (more totals: 10 entries from ESL, 8 from OL, 7 from COR and 4 from SR, with 3/3/3/1 entries being part of the "top 3s") Oh, and by the way, thanks for all your work here (this goes to all of the leadership - sadly it is easier for me to criticise something than praise something, which is why I often criticise stuff. Don't worry! ;)) And Congrats Ayrlego:P

Congrats to the winners! I'm sure I can use that class 4 license for something. Do I have to use it the next time I license a class 4? As well as that, does it expire? I would like to know how the order of the factions comes to place - especially for 4B. I count 7 entries from ESL, 5 from OL, 2 from COR and 2 from SR. First place is COR/COR, second is ESL/OL, third is ESL, and yet ESL comes up last, with most entries as well as second and third place. This would make me guess that COR, ESL, OL, SR would make most sense. For 4A it is the other way around - 5 entries from COR, 3 from ESL, 3 from OL and 2 from SR. First place is COR/OL, second is ESL, third is OL/SR. This would make me guess that OL/COR first/second, third ESL and SR behind. Or am I seeing just thinking about this in the wrong way?

While I'm not one of the lucky winners of a class 6 ship, shouldn't the boundries for class 6 vessels be published? (also considering that one has already been captured?)

I think I said something with the chat feature in google docs, but I'm not sure how long messages remain there ;)
-
That has been like that for a week or so. I guess leaving messages in the doc doesn't work too well...

Btw, any news when we can expect results for Challenge IV and the currently running MRCA?

Whenever I click on a linked topic in another topic I now get sent to the Portal, that shouldn't be like that, should it?

Could we just have one shared Flickr Account where we collect all the pictures of ships, including information? Have 2 or 3 people who get access to it, so we can keep it up to date easier.

Well, the Eslandolan Trade Run Thread would be better than nothing, wouldn't it?

MAESTRO requests a letter of Marque for the Pineapples Revenge, 3A.
-
I know most ship licenses are manual entry, I just want to place a note here that the Pineapples Revenge (just moved to the MAESTRO account) had been licensed by Faladrin already, so there should only be a cost of 125 DB instead of 375 DB as this is the 4th ship in the MAESTRO account.

[OL - FB] 'Persévérante' and 'Comtesse de Praenia'
Legostone replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Stop tempting me to build another ship; I can see that technique working well if applied using some lightly bent plates... Of the two I prefer the Persévérante, I think the lines of it flow a bit better than the other one. I especially like that stern - nice shaping there. The overall curve is fantastic as well, but I would rather call her a corvette than a small frigate - I've never seen a frigate with a completely open gundeck... The Comtesse de Praenia looks a bit odd to me, it might just be that I'm mostly used to waterline models; I dare to say that she would look better without the lower part. One thing that I could see improved is the tile-look on the sides, maybe have some of the planks overlap if possible; the sides look a bit odd with all the vertical lines separating entire sections. And again, this really tempts me to start yet another ship...
