The Technic Confessional
Andy D replied to Didumos69's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Not sure I see the problem (sin) of modding a battery box to use an AC adapter. Seems like a good way to have a model powered all day. Maybe I should say a dozen HM's just for saying this. Andy D- 121 replies

8258 Build and Modifications
Andy D replied to Andy D's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks for the replies. Maybe I will apply the 3 critical and 3 improved playability as I build and skip the others. My real interest in this set are the functions and how the gearbox is put together. i checked on the sticker sheet, and I find them available for $45 to $59... I will not be getting the stickers! i have all my parts pulled, I will start to build tomorrow 5/26/17... let's see how long it takes. i will post updates to this thread. @jotta93 Did you get a new set? How much? Andy D -
Edit: I completed the build. The 14th post in this thread has my comments on the build and how I re-colored some parts of the truck. As many of you know, for years I have been bemoaning selling my 8258's. Well I finally figured out a way to build the truck! I searched and searched for a good price (I was not going to pay $450 +) or someone to trade some stuff for an 8258, no luck! A couple of weeks ago while fiddling around on BaseBrick I found that I have most of the parts to build it! Wow, I can build the Crane Truck! I was only short a few parts (less than $20 on BrickLink), so off to get them... I now have all I need to build it, not all the absolute colors (a few different colors) but for me the 8258 is more about the build experience and the function. I am now pulling the parts from my collection of loose parts, tomorrow I build. A question I have is the necessity of all the modifications recommended by Designer Han at: http://www.designer-han.nl/lego/original modifications.htm There are 3 modifications he considers "critical" There are 3 modifications he considers "for improved playability" And 2 modifications for "looks" I am considering (strongly) the 3 he considers "critical" and the 3 he considers "for improved playability" and I really don't care about the 2 for "looks" iI am asking you to put your "way back hats" on and try to remember some of this stuff. My question is... Which of these modifications would you do if you were interested more in function than form? Thanks, Andy D

Very nice! It looks like a very old building. Andy D

Judging by the post views, it does not appear that many people realize that @Sariel did a video review and speed build of the 40th Anniversary Chassis. His video is well worth a view if you are at all interested in this Chassis. The link to the video is in his 2017 first half review thread. I think he should have started a new thread so more folks would realize that the video is there The video is towards the bottom of the page. Andy D

Do the studs have LEGO embossed on them? If not... well maybe not LEGO Just MHO, YMMV Andy D

Thanks for doing the review of the 40th anniversary set. I built this set last month, and I was hoping you would do a video speed build and review, Your review did not dissapoint. I think @schraubedrinhad some valid points though. thanks again for this review and all that you do! Andy D

Dancing Baby Groot
Andy D replied to Sariel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This is very nice (dare I say cute)! Which brings a question to me... Has their ever been a successful Technic Ideas project? Or just a Technic Ideas project? Andy D -
There was a thread here on EB that discusses this. Also a couple of posts link to an article by Jamie Berard discussing "legal" LEGO called builds "Stressing The Elements". IHTH Andy D

Andy D replied to Erik Leppen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This is what I enjoy most about LEGO... Learning new ways to use existing LEGO pieces to build new things. What amazes me is the number of times I find something in a LEGO set or MOC that just leaves me thinking "what?" I really enjoy those moments of LEGO amazement of what can be built using commonly available LEGO pieces. I am often more amazed by some of the sub-assemblies than by the final model, I also even tend to keep some sub-assemblies longer than I keep a completed model. Andy D- 179 replies

Andy D replied to Erik Leppen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This is something I really appreciate! I often see MOCs on ReBrickable that I like, only to look at the parts list to find that the designer used several "old, rare and/or out of production" parts. Unless one has a similar parts inventory to the builder the MOC may not be buildable. I have a fairly good collection of parts from the last 3 to 4 years or so, but I have very few (many times none) of the out of production or rare parts. So I find it difficult (maybe not possible) to build the MOC. i also like it when some "special" parts are built from connectors, like the engine mount built in the 40th Anniversary Chassis. As for color... I really don't care! For me, function beats color. I have my favorite colors and colors I would rather not use, but having everything in the same color doesn't matter to me. This is terrific! I'm not normally into motorcycles, but I really like this. The way the wheels and steering and mode change works is just phenomenal! I would really like to figure out how you did that. Tear down photos would be great! AHF. To you as well! Andy D

Purism
Andy D replied to Erik Leppen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@Sariel Pretty much covers all the LEGO "sins" I can think of. I am not necessarily a LEGO "Purist", I just like to limit myself to using LEGO pieces (except for lighting) as it is part of the challenge. Since LEGO is about art and function for me, I like to see just what I can do using only LEGO pieces as intended (not stressed, cut or glued) The only non-LEGO piece I have is a 3D-printed part for a GoPro camera mount (I've not used it yet) but I like Sariel's "naked" GoPro camera mount much better anyway (which is pure LEGO). I also make heavy use of Brickstuff lighting for my Halloween and Christmas displays only because I want the lights and there is no LEGO solution that can give me the results I want. The lights make the display look better, however they do not require the lights. As for Sariel's items times 1-5, well I just don't need those solutions, I don't make many remote controlled MOCs and I rarely use stickers as they do not add to the function (my constructions are more about function than form). I have no problem with people who do use custom or cut stickers, custom-chrome pieces or non-LEGO Power Functions replacements. I think LEGO is going to jump on the bandwagon eventually with something like BuWhizz or Brick or other Blue-tooth controlled device eventually anyway, so the people using them are in a sense "early adopters". As for sins 8-11, I see no reason (for me) to use any of these techniques in my building, and to me they really are the biggest LEGO "sins". But I will not sit in judgment of what anyone chooses to use any of this as it is their choice, but in accordance with most of Eurobricks contests non-LEGO pieces are usually not allowed in a LEGO contest as it is just not LEGO. Just MHO, YMMV, Andy D- 179 replies

Opinions Needed For Possible Huge Lego Lot
Andy D replied to Bengalhawks's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I'm with @badgerboy. From those photo you can't tell what you really are selling. If you want that amount of money I would suggest you assemble the sets so that one can tell what you really have. From the photos I cannot tell what is there and for that kind of lot ((if you do not want to assemble) maybe you should sell it by the pound (look for other lots sold by the pound) but this will get you much less than you want. In order to maximize your sale you should assemble and re photo and let folks know what kind of completion to expect. I think $1500 is just too much for a mixed lot. Just MHO, YMMV, Andy D -
This thread got me to thinking more about the 8258 Crane Truck, again (still?) Anyway I looked on my BaseBrick account and I find I am missing fewer than 50 pieces of several parts... So I am going to build it, I will BL the mecessary parts and build. I have a couple of parts (one or two beams and two panels) in the wrong color, but substituting black for red will be OK as the main thing I like about the Crane Truck is the functions and the color will not affect the functions. So my LEGO "grail, dream, regret" will be satisfied! Thanks for this thread, it caused me to rethink my 8258! Andy D

Large to small is a very good, easy way to sort/organize. I find I have way more small pieces than large, so it seems to take much more time to sort/organize when I get to the small pieces. My greatest difficulty in storing is when I have one or just a few of something really unique. My question to me is... How do I store this piece so that I can easily find it when it is needed? Unique pieces are sometimes nice, but it is too bad that more special pieces are not somehow built from standard pieces, be it System or Technic. Andy D

I have had an account on BASEBRICK for a few years now, and now I am starting to use it more. I find it very useful for many inventory things, and now I find the "Can I Build This Set" function very useful. I know it costs money to keep a site running, especially one with large storage and bandwidth requirements. My question is how many of you donate to this site and how much is a reasonable donation? I plan to donate, but I want to make a meaningful donation without it being too much or too little (i.e. insulting to the site owner). So what are you doing? Any Ideas will be much appreciated. Thanks. Andy D

[MOD] 40th Anniversary Chassis
Andy D replied to Seasider's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@Seasider Very interesting seeing all your changes, quite nice. The side-by-side photos highlight the changes. The color changes, are quite nice and interesting but the photos of the dark areas with not much color contrast make it difficult to see just what you have done in some of those areas, I realize the color changes are part of your enhancement. Looking forward to your next changes. Andy D -
My sorting process is to start with one pile of mixed parts. I separate parts by types, I.e. Beams, pins, axels, connectors, etc. then I sort further by type and size. For me the speeding up is just organization of the process. Andy D
-
Good grief! That is amazing! It must have taken you many hours, days, weeks (Maybe months) to build this. My hat is off to you for this great accomplishment. Thanks for sharing this... Andy D

I have a drawer system for beams (straight and bent) and a few other things like steering and suspension. I use Plano boxes for all my small pieces (like pins, axels, gears, which are arranged by type and/or length and miscellaneous connectors again arranged by type and power functions) that I use frequently then I store wheels and pneumatics seperately. When building a MOC I have a stack of Plano boxes beside me that I can quickly rearrange to get pieces I need. When building a set I sort the set into divided trays and sort pieces like I store them, same system for ease memory and ease of access. When dissassembling I just take the model apart (a pile of parts) then sort into my storage system for use later. It is a fairly simple system and it just works. Next time I build a MOC or set I will take photos to illustrarte how it works. Andy D

[MOC] H-24 Engine
Andy D replied to apemax's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Way cool! Simple but complex at the same time. I will download the lxf file and look at it when I get to my computer. I am very curious to see the gearing used to connect the 2 flat 12 cylinder engines to make I function as a H-24 cylinder. Looks very inrteresting. Thanks, Andy D
