So I am living overseas for the next year in Korea (originally from the US) and I have now seen, in multiple stores, both those officially affiliated with TLG and those who are not plastic coverings on the larger/more expensive sets. Anyone know the reason for this and if this is part of the reason for the markup? Even considering the exchange rate, my observations are that there is a 10-15% markup here in Korea. If that is the reason then I think that would be ridiculous given that TLG packages are already stellar, IMO, to begin with...

Which part exactly? In essence, I am sticking up for the model saying I think its great! Steph's comment seems to acknowledge accurate proportions relative to the real thing, but the real thing is ugly and disproportionate so overall the build is ugly and disproportionate. I am arguing that if the build mirrors the real thing, but the real thing is off the the overall build is a success and voters should consider this. If I attempt to replicate something ugly and I do so perfectly then my replication should be ugly as well, but beautiful and accurate in its replication. Upshot: you replicated the ugliness very well in this model! that might sound odd and a mouthful but it is meant to be a compliment!

Great information.... I had not listened to the podcast so thanks. I actually think this is very interesting then, and I now am beginning to wonder if the variability in other's experience with this modification is due to variation in the tolerances of ABS or perhaps slight variations in how folks are building it. As can be seen in comments here, but also on the youtube vid, some didn't have problems with the original but some did (like me). But also, when I did the modification it did return to the idle position perfectly (see vid) but yours did not. I guess I am not entirely surprised by this. Seems like folks had a similar issue with the front suspension. Some folks reporting problems with it returning to position after compression with some folks not reporting such problems.....

I dunno. If it is in proportion to the real thing, even if it is ugly, I think voters should keep this under consideration when voting. A great replication of an ugly model, IMO, needs to therefore be a great model for objectivity sake. Cuz.... yup, gonna say it... beauty is in the eye of the beholder. i.e. it is subjective. There are plenty of designs out there (particularly of cars) that I think are gawd-awful ugly but others like 'em.

Considering this is the second post of fake stuff in under 24 hours some removal might be coming along....(see the Bugatti Chiron posting) On another note, looks like I will be receiving this set as a belated holiday gift. I will not complain, but honestly I have little interest in it. The underbelly shot makes it look completely vacuous inside. I cannot believe these are passing for Technic sets. I have a difficult time understanding the functionality. Other super cars I don't have such problems with, because they at least have gear boxes which i find really interesting. Man, I think back at 8070 which got a lot of flack from the community. which now I think is really interesting because at least it had some functions. Sets such as this really, other than steering and a fake engine don't offer much. -
There seems to be a lot of folks cancelling projects out of frustration or pressure cuz of time. Wonder if it's worth it to move the contest back a bit.

This might appear a little off-topic but this comment here is the exact reason why I fail to understand all the complaining about official sets by adults who often have professional training either in engineering or similar discipline. It is like someone trained to understand the nuances of a supercar complaining about the lack of xx in a Ford Focus. Target population of a Ford Focus is certainly not someone in the market for a supercar. So, just like Erik mentioned, I think all approaches to building official sets need to begin with this in mind, especially given that the target audience for this site typically is someone with not only vast amounts of experience building with Lego, but may even have a professional degree in either engineering or some related field. That being said - I missed out on anything prior to 2011. After 2011, the "most technical" sets I think are the unimog and the Arocs.

Agreed. Don't rush it. Looks great at this point, would hate to see it compromised because of a deadline. That being said, many of the competition "deadlines" have ended up being moved back. Sometimes a week or two, and apparently you are not the only one. I would not be surprised if this one gets moved as well, so perhaps keep that in mind. I am sure Jim keeps a good tab on these sort of things.

First - as others have said - I think your new build is terrific. Lean, mean, and aggressive. But I am also curious into more of the details as to why you abandoned the original idea. I get you were waiting for parts and did not think you could finish in time and interest was beginning to fade. But then you mention that it is impossible to build - indicating that it was difficulty, not so much lack of parts or boredom that drove you to give it up. I only ask because perhaps there is something that you, being kind of an expert in building such things, have noticed that others have not that makes a Chinook-type copter so difficult. I get the size and dual-rotor system adds some complexity, but I am wondering if there is perhaps something more. -
So as I continued to build my Chiron, thought it might be cool to see some internals while shifting through all eight gears. I know others have made mention of this before, but they like models that can mix aesthetics with also the guts of a machine. I like the idea, and may leave the car like this so I can display both sides depending on my mood. Just simply switch it around when I wanted to show one over the other: Here is a video of it shifting through all the gears. Also showing the error in the design... i.e. the lack of gear block. I know we have corrected it, but I am just showing the error in the original.

Agreed. Additionally, Paul, your are so well known in the Technic MOC community I cant imagine a label like that being attached to you unless by someone who simply is new to the community and does not know any better.... in which case, who cares?! But @captainmib often times, as long as the original creator is okay with it, you can create a post yourself to share it. Folks often do that with cool content they find....

And perhaps that is the key. I am not so much saying it does not work, but it certainly doesn't work well, or at least without some definite warping of the key. if I remember correct, the key uses a 7 or 9L axle, and too much force will twist it, could even ruin it. As can be seen in the video, I think the force needed is too excessive. Mine didn't work b/c I am not willing to potentially ruin a good axle. IMO, better to simply replace the friction pins with frictionless.

The holidays have allowed me time to actually build and tinker. As I was building my 42083.... I noticed something. Late to the party - yes - but I do not think this has been discussed yet. Apologies if it has. A quick search of "air brake" on this thread did not yield anything I am alluding to. Anyways, the rear spoiler deploys with no problem with the key. But as mentioned in the original 42083 thread, in the real car, it also elevates into a ~45 degree angle to serve as an air brake. Even the full-size Lego Bugatti got this right. However, 42083 does not. Uses friction 3L pins on step 508 that hinders the whole process. Check out this little video to see the correction.

I am not Korean, but I will live here for the next year due to work. Sometimes I wish I were though! Beautiful country, and I live downtown Seoul. Beautiful city, always hopping and something to do. It is for this reason, and that all my collection is at home in the states, that I don't build much right now. But have the 42083 and am enjoying modifying it...... -

Well, it is Christmas morning here in Korea. Not that you have to be a celebrator of this exact holiday, but I am doing what any reasonable adult would do on Christmas morning. Build with Legos (Modifying my 42083)! Away from my family, so I am stuck with memories only. Will call them later today... but for as long as I can remember, Legos were part of Christmas morning as I was a kid, and also as a parent. Even though my eldest is now 16, he will be getting something Lego. Happy Holidays everyone! -
I am following this because I really enjoy this build. Great updates - couple of things - I don't mind the large rotor head. Looks very complex and for Technic models it may need to be unnecessarily large. - The pic from the top lakes the tail end appear as though it is veering of to the right (from pilot's point of view). Any way this will be corrected when additional stuff is put in?
