[ESL-FB2] Opening the north forty
Capt Wolf replied to Capt Wolf's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Thanks to everyone for their feedback on this build! The feedback I received on the first build definitely had an impact on this expansion. Thanks. I'm not sure when I hit upon the idea for the plowed field, but as soon as I did, I knew i had to do it. The plow went through at least 3 attempts. Thanks to Fuzzy MacFuzz for pointing me at an example elsewhere on the internet, and that helped a lot, although what I came up with is different. This build has already been torn down, giving its parts to a dock and some jungle battlements, but i do have some pics I didn't post. Is there something in particular you wanted a better pic of? The road was the one area that really needed improvement from the original build, so I wanted to make sure I incorporated the feedback I got on that. And I actually played around with having someone picking stones out of the plowed field, but it wasn't obvious what he was doing. He cold have been harvesting potatoes! I just couldn't make it work. But, yes, the idea is the stones for the road came from the fields. Thank you! -
[ESL-FB] A young lawyer moves to the islands

Thanks for all the kind comments about the roof and the use of the large wall panels. I was looking for a way to use the tudor wall pieces, and then I just started using lots of wall panels. Thanks. I often struggle with making things asymmetrical. The large warehouse doors on the ground floor and the stairs up the side were features that defined this build for me. It's not, but I see what you mean. It's not even the same torso, but from the angle I used, you can't tell. I'll have to watch that in the future. The angle of some of the tiles on the roof concerned me, too. That's likely what I'll address if I try this again. And the light showing through the windows was just sloppy work on my part. I should have put something in back to block the light. I think t was a side effect of starting to do an interior and then deciding not to. Again, thanks to everyone for the feedback. Much appreciated! -
Nice detail shots of the buggy. Thanks! I hadn't noticed the mudguards on the buggy. Interesting design. What piece is that?

This is my third freebuild of the month. If you like it and are not from Eslandola, please give it a thumb’s up. *** This is a continuation of the story of animosities between John Hawksbrugh of Corrington and Philip Janszen of Eslandola, specifically following the events in Angling for a Duel. *** Capt. Janszen and his longtime friend, Anthony Crol, were headed for their ship when the dock agent called out. “Janszen! Come over here!” “What is it?” replied Philip. “The Pot o’ Gold came in from Port Raleigh today, and her captain left one of the items from the mail packet with me, figuring you would be down here soon enough. What are you doing getting mail from a Corrie?” “Haven’t you heard?” said Tony. “Ol’ Pip was called out by this Corrie in the Kings Port Advertiser and has challenged him to a duel!” “Has he now?” replied the dock agent. “Does he know how good Pip is with a blade? I would hope so, for his sake.” The agent turned to Janszen with the letter. “Here you go, Pip.” “Let’s see what he has to say.” Philip opened the letter and quickly read its message. “Hmm. Well, he withdraws calling me an Oleon turncoat… but still insists on defending the honor of his Lady Winifred. I guess my words weren’t enough in that regard.” Janszen read a little further, then laughed. “Ha! He will be taking instruction from Master Kenner in swordsmanship, he says!” “Taking instruction?! Pip, you’ll kill him. You can’t actually duel this poor sod.” “I think I have a solution. I shall suggest the winner be whoever can draw first blood. That way I can still teach him a lesson and give him a nice dueling scar as a permanent reminder.” “That sounds quite reasonable” replied Tony. “And that way I won’t have to hustle you out of that Corrie port while the constables try to arrest you for murder!” “Thanks Tony. I’m glad I could make this easier on you” said Philip, needling Tony. “But I’m not letting you off the hook. If Hawksbrugh is undergoing training, I must make sure I’m in top form as well, and that is now your responsibility, Tony. En garde!” With that, Philip drew his sword and waited for Tony to draw his. Then the impromptu sparring match began. Philip pressed from the start, and Tony retreated down the dock. Philip jumped on top of a crate to gain high ground, but Tony responded in kind, and they dueled across the tops of crates and barrels on the dock. Eventually, Philip forced Tony back onto the dock. Tony thought he saw an opening and tried a quick thrust, but Philip parried the attack and gained the advantage. Extended and off balance, Tony conceded the match. “You win, Pip,” said Tony, bowing in concession, “…this time.” “Ah, that was fun, Tony. Thanks for the workout.” “No problem, Pip. You were in top form. Mr. Hawksbrugh won’t last long.” “Yes, we will have more fun in a couple of weeks! I shall write Mr. Hawksbrugh and confirm that we will arrive in Port Raleigh after we complete our trade run at the end of the month.”

Excellent! We were just discussing that we needed a whaling MOC, and voila, you've done it! Good whale tail (and tale). I'll echo the comment that the only thing missing is a rope attached to the spear, but that does not detract from this beautiful build. Eslandola approves!

I'm fascinated by the partial build of the stern of the ship. So much so that I'm commenting now before I read all of the text. Very interesting build!

Somehow I missed this one when it was new. I really like the fort! I'll echo the comments that you need to tend to your photo background, but it's a good build with a good story and fig posing.

Very nice! I like the bottles behind the bar, and the dart board. It look like a very warm, comfortable watering hole! P.S. Do they carry Weelond Ale?- 17 replies

Just a reminder that the artisan rebates are still unclaimed. The first two people to build and license an artisan property in Weelond this month get a 5db rebate from Mayor Willem Guilder. That's 20% off the license cost of a small property.- 80 replies

Wouldn't whaling essentially be covered by the Bounty run? But perhaps there should be some special whaling event/bonus roll or something.

George has an interesting, er, uniform. Nice little shop. I like how the front and top are removable for better viewing.

I was part of a 3-ship flotilla that went on a bounty run in February's MCRA, with an escort no less, so you can team up. FWIW, we all had similar results on what we got. Not sure if that was random or if the results are tied together, but I suspect the latter.

Willem Guilder was pleased with how his cotton plantation was progressing. With some early returns in hand, he could afford to open up additional acres for planting. So he set a team of men to clearing and plowing the land. *** This build expands on the earlier medium plantation found here, increasing it in size to a large plantation. Here is the new build by itself: And here it is combined with the previous build: In addition to the new sections, I added some stones to the road along the fence in the old build, as you can see better here: A close-up of the plow: And a resting worker with his scythe: I think the plowed rows in the field worked out ok (although I did get some glare off the slope pieces I used in one of the photos). All feedback welcome!

[COR - MAR FB1] Angling for a Duel
Capt Wolf replied to Fuzzy MacFuzz's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Nice build, and a fair response! I like that you took inspiration from an engraving; I always find these types of builds interesting. We'll have to wait until Janszen receives this response to see how he responds... -
[COR - Mar FB1] The Lady Jacqueline
Capt Wolf replied to Ayrlego's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I missed that the gun rating for a 5F was "1". In that case, and given the analysis re number of pre-fab hulls used, I think 5F is a fair classification. And if you want to get her into the game quicker, you could always sell some shares in her while retaining majority ownership. You could even include a buyout clause so you could buy back the shares from investors as you can afford it. -

Capt Wolf replied to Ayrlego's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I love this ship! I'm going to have to study her more, and steal some ideas from her! This is possibly the best ship I've seen in BoBS so far. As for class, she looks a touch small for a class 5, but a 5F does fit in general. I think you could get away with classifying her as a 3T2 large sloop, although I think she's a bit bigger than that. There's no class 4 description that really fits. Tough call. -
