Why can't UCS just be anything that is aimed more towards collection than play? There could be a UCS castle, a UCS Black Pearl and so on. Ultimate Collector Series - a set more tailored to collection than play. Scale has nothing to do with it, neither does franchise or even build quality, really. It's just not a set you will generally find with all the 'toy' sets at the local department store. Arguably these sets could be UCS under this definition but TLG has labelled them hard to find instead, so they are not technically UCS. http://shop.lego.com...ted-House-10228 http://shop.lego.com...f-Orthanc-10237 All UCS sets are packaged and marketted more for collection and display than play and all are harder to find than sets packaged for play.

Should LEGO cut ties with Shell?
ummester replied to legoman19892's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Holy crude!! Look at the size of that thing :) You could still put it up on ideas - just say you are using the Shell model for inspiration and currently working on your own instructions and part list - but the goal of the project is for everyone to have the opportunity to build their very own Shell FLNG :D Re this discussion, I was thinking on it. It kind of doesn't matter whether Greenpeace has hit below the belt or not, not now - they have created the association with Shell and LEGO in the public eye. Wide spread public knowledge of a project like the FLNG model pictured would create upset among the sheeple. It would be more politically prudent for LEGO to make an announcement that it will no longer create packaged models for children with Shell, or any other oil company, as part of the design. This will make the sheeple think LEGO is more awesome, regardless of the fact that LEGO is made from petroleum.- 214 replies

The beauty of topics - and when on a LEGO forum, LEGO is a topic to be discussed by all and not a corporate entity to be ran by the business owners, is that everyone has different opinions on them. I find polls interesting because they show the spread of opinions on topics, the patterns in groups and that kind of thing. As LEGO builders, we probably all like to group things, including human opinion :D

I was going to attach the LDD file for you and the other piratical MOCers to play with MATTEO but I can't work out how to? I have attached them in the Technic and Sci Fi forums???

It would be interesting to add 'Should TLG make a modern war themed line' to the list SMC. That is another long running debate and the numbers either way do interest me.

Bring back the shrouds from the old pirate ships, in dark brown. Part 6057 and 2541, as pictured: Why? Because the new shrouds lack shape and kind of suck for tall ship building. I'd really like a tall or long shroud with greater taper and 3 gaps (or 4 vertical beams) so that the dimensions were either 27x7 or 27x8.

Design it minifg scale in LDD - hopefully ideas will still be around by the time your first render is finished :D- 214 replies

I really enjoyed that read - thanks for posting. Is it just me or does anyone else think that things like illegal connections and old part usage should be ok for ideas sets? I get that all official TLG sets aimed at the target demographic have to be constructed according to safety, brick stress and ease of separation rules - but shouldn't there be some avenue for more inventive and less 'official' building techniques to make their way into packed sets, such as ideas?

MOC/WIP Smit Zwarte Zee Ocean tug from1963
ummester replied to Konajra's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Beautiful looking model - really well done. I applaud the design and build skills involved. -
AT-AT is a really bad example - that's why I picked it - it's height ranges dramatically in film shots. The Falcon is more consistent in the films relative to characters but not to other vessels. I believe TLG designed the UCS Falcon to what they thought was minifig scale - though it definitely appears to me that the dimensions they used are well off the majority of film shots. You have explained why many MOCs of Star Wars vehicles at 'minifig' scale seem over-sized to me, they are likely based on UCS Falcon size and not film size.
-
I would respectfully disagree on that Robiano. Lucas wasn't really one to keep to scale in his shots - just look at the AT-AT, it changes sizes regularly relative to people and the Snowspeeder in Empire - but to get a true estimate of scale for the Falcon you have to look at shots of either character's in or on it, like this one: Yea, minifigs are wider than they are tall, so you have to decide what dimension you are going to base the scale of a model relative to them on - either height or width (I find if you try and base it on width the models look over sized), though, regardless, the Falcon from the films isn't as big as many think. It's really on a single deck vessel (with some half height smuggling compartments below) and a cockpit that is barely taller than a person. A new cockpit piece that tapered more bluntly than any recent system set but but with a similar circumference where it joins the ship would be reasonable size - then the ship has to be scaled around that. The original LEGO cockpit was probably the closest in size: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?P=30485pb01 Of course, the system sets have ships that are too small relative to the size of the cockpits.

neoconagenda - I agree that some of the price points are getting ridiculous, even if you have some money. I also agree that AFOLs should MOC their sets up to be more complete. TheLegGodt - it does make sense to try and develop a Falcon that offers a bit of everything and represents something new(ish). The UCS Falcon is too big for minifig scale and/or display whilst the system Falcons are too small. Something in the middle would be more perfect and hopefully hit a more reasonable price point. Personally, though I would welcome this set, I'd probably not buy one - rather I'd use techniques and parts from it so that I improve the singular display Falcon I have (which isn't really any single set but rather a mish mash of ideas from them all and some of the excellent MOCs out there). I'm a builder, more than a collector - so I don't want multiple Falcons, just one as close to perfect Falcon as I can put together. Keep in mind though, the wider you make a Falcon's saucer section, the more difficult it is to display. A display stand that holds a Falcon model at a 45 degree angle on the side would also be nice inclusion.

Falcons sell, LEGO is a company that needs to make profit - another Falcon is an inevitability. Another UCS Falcon seems the most likely to me. Here are my reasons. There is one midi, a couple of minis and 3 system Falcons but only 1 UCS Falcon that was released a while ago. The current gap seems to be around the UCS size. The recent UCS Sandcrawler wasn't really UCS but more a detailed system/minifg size build. I think there will be a new falcon in either 2015 or 2016 that will be a price point similar to the sandcrawler, around 3,500 parts, with an interior. It will be larger than the system sets but smaller than the UCS set.

cheers for the merge and the link to the discussion legoman19892 - it all makes more sense in context. Seems to me that Greenpeace is leaching of of the popularity of the toy and film to make a point against Shell, which has more demonized the toy. It's all very misguided, with a lot of grandstanding, as noted here: However, the speaker grabbing more attention than the message is the way most information seems to be delivered in this day and age. Making a fuss over nothing just to get heard is par for the course.- 214 replies

Being mad about marketing partnerships with an oil company seems silly - many products have them. Being mad about the use of petroleum made more sense to me :) The Game of Thrones minifigs in the add are cool though- 214 replies

Do you think the add is trying to make any point about how LEGO is made, or just toys with Shell on the logo?- 214 replies

I heard a rumor that TLG were going to change the way the bricks are made and use less (or no) petrol. It was just a rumor, from a friend - so no basis for fact that I know of - but it does make sense considering the way the planet's environment is looking ATM. Not that I think LEGO pollutes kids imaginations - but plastics do pollute the planet.- 214 replies

MATTEO - minifig scale always has to be an approximate. It's somewhere between 1:35 & 1:40 - I think so long as most elements of a build are within that range then one can claim the build is minifig scale. But yes, minis are wider than tall - true minifg scale will have odd proportions. For example, I was discussing the USC Falcon vs the system Falcons with a friend. The UCS is too large and the system sets are too small - but the USC is the correct width for a minifg proportion, while the system sets are just under the correct length. So, if you built a Millinneum Falcon to true minifig scale, it would have an oval rather than circle shaped saucer section, which would not look correct. I think, for a model to look correct, it has to disregard minifig dimensions and just go by minifg height. Having only really looked at galleon dimensions, I know the length was between 60 & 180ft (with an average of 90-120ft). The beam was, generally, just under 1/3 of the length and the height almost equal to the length. NB the height I have posted for The Crow is wrong, she would be a total of 88cms tall, she is only 70cm tall from the waterline, or 90ft. I am not sure of average frigate dimensions but I am sure someone here would know - if yours is 128 studs long it would be just over 1m in actual length, or what I would assume to be a ship with a length somewhere between 90 & 100 ft. I found this thread - http://www.eurobrick...showtopic=34929 - it may help. Cheers Kolonialbeamter - I'll study those bows in detail :)

Cheers again for the kind words. Hey, if you really like her and would want to see her for real, vote for her on Ideas. I doubt TLG will release a 4,500 piece ideas set but, if she has enough support, they may want to release some kind of galleon or tall ship model with a tiled hull. Personally, I'm starting to think that tiles are really the only way to do a wooden ship hull justice - I've tried so many combinations with other designs and keep coming back to tiles. Now, if only I can work out a way to layer tiles or curved slopes neatly up and around the bow, I'd never have to look at prefab hulls again Anyone know of any ships, other than The Revenge, that have tried to do this?

Discussion Should LEGO make a Military Theme?
ummester replied to KisKatona's topic in Special LEGO Themes
It all feels a bit hypocritical to me. TLG have a very 'fuzzy' line in the sand with this, which is why this discussion can go on for so long. -
This is why I think LDD and renders are perfect for competitions like this - if TLG wants to position or pose an entry differently than photographed by the creator, they can use the file and either render or build as required. That, and I don't have all the parts in all the colours :D But creation shouldn't be limited by the plastic on hand.

This is a likeness/caricature of an Australian short necked, fresh water turtle. Edit - here is a link showing the turtle on an 8x8 display stand, for size purposes. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3856/14495119959_4411b6ecf4_o.png
