  1. Cute presentation and great build SEBEUS
  2. Hi all, My second MOC on Eurobricks. I designed and completed this build whilst working on my larger galleon MOC. I enjoyed collecting and building the LEGO Exo-Force line with my sons, though both they and I really wanted a more Western themed range, something more along the lines of FASA and the Battletech universe. The inspiration for this build should be obvious. It was not designed to be an exact replica, rather a build that pays homage to the source, whilst still presenting as unique LEGO model. The piece count is 520. The cockpit removes easily, attached by Technic pins. I have realized the build in olive and dark green. I would prefer to see the dark green replaced with dark tan, giving the model a more militant and 'earthy' feel, as shown in this LDD render. Not all of the parts required are available in dark tan. I submitted it as a LEGO idea model - because I would like to see TLG start a similar themed mech line and because it would be nice to get the required parts in dark tan LDD file: Battle Mech.lxf
  3. Hard to see your MOC in progress and comment WELLESLEY - the images are a bit too small on this page and the image folder not yet public. I second Swan Dutchman with recommending Bricklink - I've spent some notable $$$ there over the past 6 months for MOCs and set refurbishment - I have personally never had a really bad experience (touch wood, one order still en route :) ). Every seller I have dealt with has been top notch with filling of orders and packing of parts, worldwide. Unfortunately, with large MOCs or hard to find pieces, shipping can be a bit of a killer, so it is best to shop around and find the majority of the parts you want at a store with a reasonable overall price. Free tools that can help with Bricklinking are: LDD Manager if you have the pieces planned in LDD. Brickficiency is useful for looking at Bricklink wanted lists and scanning the database for the cheapest combinations of required parts. Bricklink also has some of it's own wanted list tools for this.
  4. I echo what others have noted - this is a great little build, lacking only in the external cockpit design. A pity not all of the pieces are available in dark orange, otherwise I would try and construct something similar.
  5. A nice and in depth review - thanks PCVANDO and for the comparison photos Israel. If the look of this build does appeal, then by all means, buying it would be worthwhile. As a constructed piratical set, by relative overall size to the IFS & QAR, it doesn't really look worth the asking price. By part count it seems to be on the upper limits of fair, still coming under 10c US per piece. If buying this set only for parts, it would be interesting to do a Bricklink comparison (sans minifigs) and see what was cheaper.
  6. Very nice Captain. It has a great LEGO look to it and seems like something that could be sold as a large set.
  7. I'm a LEGO purist - I consider it an infestation if any other type of brick get's mixed in with my LEGO :D That said, there are some parts and colors in these sets that could be useful if made from actual LEGO.
  8. That is gigantic! The colors work well together. Do you have all 120+ cannons to fill those ports? With sails, it will have to build up over 2m tall. I know that a build 1m long and 90cm high is difficult to move - like Imperial, I'm interested in how easy it will be to move at that size.
  9. I realized the the standard anchor pieces were way too small for the size of the Crow, so made some with left over parts. Here's a shot of them and some other piratical LEGO things, to add detail to the Crow - believe it or not, there are around 90 pieces in this tiny lot.
  10. Very nice - some great detail and a very 'neat' effect overall.
  11. Bootstrap Bill for the brown bandanna http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?M=poc033 Fortune teller for the violet one http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?M=col137
  12. I kind of agree with this but TLG ships are generally named more to be exciting to the target audience than any kind of realism. Here is a list http://brickset.com/sets/list-5954 Only the licensed PotC ships have decent sounding names, IMO, and one of them is a real ship's name.
  13. I think the details and shape on the new build is greatly improved on the older builds Sebeus. Use of the Egyptian wings is great, as is the way you have built the railing on the bow. Only thing I'm not keen on is the white - but that is probably being nit picky.
  14. Nicely done, -DoNe- I really like the view below decks and how you have organised the minifigs to show life on board the vessel.
  15. That is a spectacular diorama Petoriano. I think the roof tiles and wave crests are particularly well done. A question - how do you move that?
  16. I got some canvas paper - but I don't think it is True canvas - it comes up very white compared to the calico. What I like about it is that it is much easier to work and holds a billowed shape really well. I think the treated calico looks nicer, however. I'll post some photos of the difference eventually. I'll probably end up combining the techniques - setting up all the sails on canvas paper first and then gluing a piece of printed calico on top. Now that I have seen the upside and downside to both, I want to achieve both upsides :) This will allow me to just use a piece of larger card to mount the main course printed on calico. A general sail question for the ships experts out there. I have designed the Crow with 2 sails on the foremast, 3 on the main mast and both a square rig and mizzen sail on the mizzen mast. Did any true to life galleons get built like this? Most pictures I can find show an equal number of sails on the fore mast and main mast.
  17. Really nice looking hut Legonardo. How do you get the tiles to sit at various angles? Are they pressed into studs firmly or just resting?
  18. Cheers AB. I didn't get to Bricktopia, didn't get organised in time and too much gardening to do seeing I spent the whole weekend before building the Crow :) Were there some nice MOCs there? Israel - thanks for the advice. The calico is starting to irritate me - doesn't print smoothly and frays too easily. It looks nice but is way too finicky for my liking. Oh, I did mean give it a second coat of gesso, to stiffen it up even more, after the printing. Unless you are in Australia, it's probably easier for me to find some canvas paper - but thanks for offering to send some. I also like the look of the True Canvas more. 5 sheets may do the Crow - but I think I'll need more. The Main Course is really annoying me - it's just a little wider than A4 if you want to clip the bottom ends in and I don't want to make the sail any more narrow, otherwise I don't think it will look wide enough for the hull. I'm also changing the mast position for the mizzen sail.
  19. My process of choice is experimenting in LDD and buying from Bricklink. You can do more with actual bricks than LDD allows, though it is a good starting point to work out the basic list of bricks you will need.
  20. That's one more than me Fountain of youth is the only one I ever purchased and that was second hand for the mini-fig and dark green parts. I tend to favor the collection of bricks over TLG sets now, as any sets I have on display are so heavily modded that they are barely recognizable.
  21. Interesting convo re the small/large ship sets. IMO, LEGO as a boxed product is first and foremost a toy. TLG sets should be designed around kids and relevant price points, as a general rule. Ultimately the boxed sets are products that LEGO needs to make money from and this generally mean's a range of sets from $5 to $150 (odd) for a given line, or 50 - 1500 pieces, on average. Larger and more accurate models of anything, including ships, that are designed more for display than play, are best generated by the MOCers. Seeing as AFOLs are increasing, I think avenues like Cuusoo/LEGO ideas and Bricklink's new MOC shop are better positioned for the boxing of larger and more AFOL themed models. Also, there are plenty of large scale model instructions and part lists available on places like EBAY - if you want to build them, you just have to source the parts yourself. As for more TLG ships - any would be nice I guess, they all add more boat building parts into the mix.
  22. Cheers Hesedguy Just gave some caliso a pretty decent 1/3 coat - will see if it has the texture of paper tomorrow and run it through the printer if so. Once the sails are printed, cut and I know they fit - I will re coat with a 1/3 mix as needed to stiffen them up. I'm hoping to achieve a billowed look with all 10 sails - we'll see how it goes.
  23. Been working on designs for the Fore Course and Main Course. Am trying to keep a look that is a mix of LEGO and model. Should be able to try printing these onto material re STUDDLES method soon. Can't really try the higher sails until the final mast parts arrive.
  24. Very neat little build David. It very much has the look of an official TLG boat, with much better organised colors and trimming details. I'm also interested in where the mast sections and anchors came from - I don't think I've seen either part before.
  25. Cheers Norro - I really don't know how I would have tracked the parts for a build of this size if it wasn't for LDD.
