How big/smaller than you realized are their heads? Can someone take a picture of the head pieces on a baseplate so I can count studs? Thanks.

Awesome MOC. Very clean looking with little deviation from the all Dark Gray color scheme. System really lends itself well to a Square Vs, round juxtaposition, I do it all the time in my system MOCs to. It looks great. How study/stable is it? It looks like just a clip and bar connection is all you've got for it's ankles which I'd imagine makes him pretty unstable. That's what zoom is for. I'm nearsighted to the point I can get a drivers license, so I'm used to zooming things in so I can see. . Hold down the ctrl button and roll on your mouse wheel and it'll zoom the picture in. It Gets pixly, but I can see it. "Use LDD" No you learn to use a zoom button.

How come HF ball joints get tighter when you blow on them?
3rdeye88 replied to thoduo's topic in LEGO Action Figures
Super Glue, nail polish, clear coat spray paint, I've even heard of using like stick-em or other adhesive like substances. Basically you want to add to the surface of the ball joint so that the tension in the socket is stronger. The same can be done on the socket as well, but like everyone said, let it dry otherwise you'll have a permanent joint and that's not good. This is also a good solution if you have a cracked joint and you can't use any other part because its the last one you've got, would mess up the color scheme, etc. The glue would fix the cracked joint and work to increase surface tension between the ball and socket. I did this on an early version of Matteo that had HF 1.0 arms for his shoulders. I only had two and one of them cracked so my step dad gave me some model glue to fix it Put it back on was stiffer than the not cracked joint. I was quite impressed. Of course on a black part it showed and it looked a little funky if payed too much attention to. -
I agree with Patrick about the dishes. To me they look like armoring for a hinge, instead of the hinge itself. I can picture there being some kind of motor or servo that is part of the shoulder mechanism underneath that. So I second the dishes on the chest. At first I didn't agree about the head, I thought you built it identically or nearly identical to Callahan but I see on a second look that's not the case. So I have to agree that this head looks kind of off. I get the narrow aspect to it. Its a robot why does it need a big head? Just means a bigger target to hit. Bit the HF armor piece looks kind of...stuck on there. Its kinda goofy looking in my opinion. Its not so much the part itself even as much as its position. I think if it was more flat and not angled up so sharply, then it'd look pretty nice and the sides of the armor would look good protecting more of the head overall than it is. Other than the lack of dark red which you explained and the cod piece I mentioned before I personally think everything else looks great, a nice blend of Hero Factory and system slopes.
-
I really dig this MOC, but I think the wedge slope piece thingy on its crotch is a bit much. I understand why its there, it fits in line with the rest of the dark gray system parts, but I feel its just a bit much. Maybe something smaller or perhaps some kind of flat tile part might not call so much attention to it. Your robot has huge junk Djok. :P Is that all the dark red HF armor you have? I also think some of those where the gunmetal ones on his upper arms might motif the ones on his legs pretty well. I think he could use just a touch more dark red.
-
Not at all. I've already figure dout a way that could work. You develop a new set of arm where one part connects onto the bone part, probably by the conventional method, then there's little slots or tabs on the side and the other "back armor" piece slides and clicks into place or there's little tabs that bend and snap into place. Or it could be as simple as a pin hole pin connection. It would require two new Molds but then armor could be used all sorts of different ways. YOu could point the main part on the back of the leg and have the "back part" I'm not good with any kind of 3d modeling or design program but In my head I can think of a couple possible solutions for how that would work, and as long as the parts were made to fit with the CCBS system there's no reason they'd have to hinder movement. It would be no more a hindrence than the HF armor that already goes on the CCBS bones.VBBN and I agree, the bigges issue with HF is the lack of variety in the base armor system. They found one design and sat on it since 2.0. Addons are cool but like he said, what if I want an addon with a textured armor part underneath it? I definitely think Lego can build off this system a lot more than they have in terms of armor elements.

No I'm saying that of all of the sets he was my first pick of sets I wanted as well. I don't have it yet. I just spent the last little bit of "fun money' on a bricklink order. I spent $25 which is more than enough to get a HF set but the BL order is far more useful. I'm all out ofa few kinds of thin lift arms in black, dark and light gray. I guess at some point I'll try and get the HF sets from this year. Even if the new parts offering isn't as substantial its still more HF parts to work with, that's always good. Thanks for the suggestions. :)

I guess I'm the odd ball. My latest purchase was The Lion and Gorilla Legend beast and the technic Mini-container truck off ebay.
-
Thanks you guys. Jaw Beast was actually my first pick for the purple. If its still only wave one then Furno will be my first Mech pick then.
-
SUWEEET! Thank you. And thanks to Bacem as well. =D *stares intently at each wave 2 photo*

I don't have any of the sets yet. After seeing the photos my impressions of this year's lineup wasn't exactly stellar. I had a little bit of money saved for a 2014 lego purchase and I chose two Legend Beast sets instead of a HF set. If money wasn't so tight I probably would have gotten Jaw beast and Evo XL looks pretty good from a parts acquisition standpoint. That new gear piece in his his is actually the most intriguing new part for me. Then I wonder if the Mini-Hero arms work well as fingers, like the exoforce/bionicle arms do. Beyond that my interest in anything else in Wave 1 of IFB is somewhat tepid. Some interesting parts here and there in the beast sets, but nothing I can't wait until funds are more abundant or they go on sale later in the year or next year. If you guys had to recommend one set to me with the knowledge that money is tight and I'd have to spring for it, which set do you think might be worth the money for what you get?
-
AH I remember this guy. You've posted him on DA and Flickr. I think he looks like Corrodor if he had murdered XT4, turned him into some kind of missile launching backpack and gone on a rampages. Lol Its a pretty slick MOC. I really like the color compliments of the Lime and yellow, but also how the grouping of them is kind of contrasting. You can tell very easily by the yellow that the backpack isn't part of the character, that they're two separate pieces that are connected.

(Invasion From Below MOC) Vulture Beast
3rdeye88 replied to Sir Brickalot's topic in LEGO Action Figures
You're welcome, although I wasn't praising the photography itself so much as I liked the photo of it where it was stretched out a bit more. So I guess I should have said "I like the posing in that one picture." It definitely looks like its roaring, screeching, squawking, making a lot of noise to assert its dominance. Though the photos aren't bad either, not blurry well lit and a mostly clean undistracting background. -
How/when would you want Bionicle to return?
3rdeye88 replied to Logan McOwen's topic in LEGO Action Figures
Who are these Templars you keep speaking of? -
Of the "ACE MOCers" on here I'm grabbing these two responses and multi-quoting them as they're the two that fit most in line with my style. Firstly I didn't write my answer to my own question because i wanted to get a few responses before adding my own as to not steer an answer into any type or format. I think since I'm pretty new here and probably relatively new to you guys overall I'll get into a little bit of history. I really started MOCing with Bionicle in 2004. That's when I started doubling up on sets to have a display figure and one to play around with. By 2006 I had run out of space to display any new figures so I completely liquidated my collection. This meant that from about 2004-06 I had doubles of nearly everything. My first MOCs were all bad guys. It took me about two years to get things figured out and by 2006 I had this. If any of you know my MOCs you'll see that Ryakk was very well on his way(he still pretty much has the same leg design) and I threw together a prototype of Mototaur just to round out the team before I headed off to Comic Con where I knew I was going to meet Greg Farshtey(and of course I showed him this). Sadly this is the earliest example of any of my MOCs I can show as I didn't have a computer or access to a digital camera till 2009. Ryakk is literally the first MOC I ever posted to the internet. Mototaur followed days after. Needless to say I came out of the gate swinging. My awkward "figure it out phase" had already happened and I was posting MOCs that I still have(Ryakk will be 10 years old this year isn't that amazing?!) and am still proud of enough to leave unchanged for 7 or more years while other MOC s of that era have gotten a serious update. Looking back to those MOCs that came out of my early years of MOCing compared toe now. I'd say my style of MOCing has evolved more to something along the line of Pate's style. I don't necessarily make the distinction between Hero Factory, Bionicle, technic or System so much. The former of the three are especially undistinguished from. Its really only the latter that I pay more attention my inclusion of it into a MOC. What has resulted from Bionicle ending and the world of Constraction MOCing moving on in terms of my own MOCing is the walls coming down. Before there was a huge distinction between Bionicle/technic, and anything else. It also means I have broken away from the architypal character development of "Toa good guys," and "Makuta and Dark Hunter bad guys." This has been abetted by joining an online community and seeing what other MOCers have done. I saw guys like Gringat on MOCpages(he's also on DA as Lol-Pretzel) include more system into their Constraction MOCs and it really got me to rethink the possibility of parts and their usefulness. I'd say my MOCing style has changed in the sense that I've really broadened my horizons as a MOCer and broke down a lot of mental barriers between one style of part or story/character type and others. I think my MOCing style has always been marked by the ability to deviate from any other design I've come up with. Now with Hero Factory in the mix it has allowed me a new kind of way to be diverse in my MOCing. I can mix it all up like on Gweeb or Nui-Moko(and a ton of other of my middle aged to recent MOCs), pair the most unlikely parts together with HF bone pieces, or completely ommit Hero Factory or bionicle all together as a way to challenge myself. The biggest change for me has been perspective. Bionicle ending, Hero Factory/the CCBS taking over and especially being part of the online MOCing community has really lent perspective to my MOCing and shown me that there are other ways to make it work outside of Bionicle. *Brofist of the decade right there* I am so with you there man. That's probably my biggest gripe about Hero Factory. That and Can we get a little 360 armoring? I bet Storm Trooper armor does better to protect them than HF armor does. My Freddie MOCury that I made the other night that I haven't posted yet may look fabulous but if he got shot in the rear I don't think he'd fair well since its completely uncovered(looks like a storm trooper wearing ***less chaps).

So the biggest change to your MOCing style is to build more set like and to use a hybrid of Physical building and digital building now that its a more versatile tool? That definitely makes sense. Seeing your MOCs I can tell you stick closer to the path of set like designs and techniques while still making them more intricate and interesting than any of the sets have been thus far.Have you done much experimenting with mixing the newer parts with older ones? Looking through your flickr photostream, anything that isn't system based seems to be all CCBS based, as if you completely jump ship and left the old one completely behind. I don't know if you post all the results of your experiments, but have you tried integrating the various systems, not Just bionicle and HF, but those, system elements and maybe even more technic based parts as well?
-
The question wasn't if you had a problem with it. Its just that since the landscape of constraction MOCing has changes with Bionicle being gone and the CCBS system taking its place, people's MOCing styles have probably changed with it. I was asking MOCers to describe how their styles have changed. I wanted people to respond before I wrote my answer. But I imagine Pate, VBBN, Aanchir and Warhead's answers are more along the lines of what I was looking for. Though I'm in the process of reading the responses now. That's more along the lines of how I look at it. I was asking because I know the landscape of MOCing has changed or shifted. I'm curious to see how the characteristics of MOCer's styles have changed along with it.

Oh... Very nice. Thank you. =D Is this the official box art? Has the other's been released?
-
Is there a back view of that? The photo I saw was on that cool toy review site and its more straight ahead where you can't see her back. I also saw the first image of her from the Nuremberg toyfair but it wasn't that detailed. Are there other images out there?

I see a lot of similarity to the Alien spinoffs that came after the first few Alien movies. More specifically what came out in the action figure lines. There were all kinds of "animalistic" aliens. I assume the concept behind that was what if those kinds of animals were attacked by face huggers and implanted with aliens in them thus taking on the characteristics of those creatures like aliens do. It certainly translates to Beasts I think. A this beast, a that beast everywhere a beast beast. =P

(Invasion From Below MOC) Vulture Beast
3rdeye88 replied to Sir Brickalot's topic in LEGO Action Figures
That head part really lends its self well to an avian style MOC. I might just have to try my own take on that when I get a Beast set. Jaw Beast is the one I want the most FOR PURPLE. But I suppose it depends on which set I end up getting and which parts are abundant enough for a MOC like that. I quite like the photo of it screeching/squawking, the one under the picture of Stormer being crushed by it's feet. -
This was a conversation that came up in I believe the general HF discussion but since it was kind of off topic I felt it was an interesting discussion that needed its own thread. So..How has your MOCing style changed. How so since the very beginning of you starting to MOC or more specifically, since Hero Factory has been introduced and is now plentiful in most people's parts collection. How has it changed your methods of MOCing? Do you find you use certain kinds of parts more or less now? How would you define your MOCing style or process then as opposed to now?
-
Thank you for the feedback on this Aanchir. I appreciate it. :)I agree. Vehicles are a vastly undertouched subject in constraction MOCing. For the ammount of vehicle sets that exist out there there doesn't seem to be that many correlating MOCs. I've honestly seen a few dropship style MOCs and two of them are from the same guy on DA. And I've seen nobody really hammer out a serious attempt at a Motorcycle, let alone a more customized chopper variant. Well you're right about me using parts because they filled a particular space. First and foremost its a chopper. There's certain obligations that came with that. It had to have an engine block, a belt drive, transmission, oil tank, and exhaust pipes occupying that inner space of the frame, then the gas tank and seat that sit on top of the frame. Also, because of the unique wheel this is a bit of an unconventional frame but not too unconventional. In my research I did find motorcycles that had an open ended rim and one sided frame. Parts like the Toa Metru shoulder armor pieces were included solely because they fit in the space behind the engine block above the transmission where the oil tank is supposed to be. Secondly, I think you're focusing too much attention on the individual elements and their respective aesthetics and therefore are losing sight of the big picture, this is a "hell hound/beast" themed chopper style Motorcycle. Its still supposed to represent a piece of machinery. Its going to have an organic and inorganic look throughout the MOC because that's what it is, an inorganic piece of machinery with an organic theme to it. The nice thing about bionicle is that it does have a lot of reoccurring aesthetics that pop up amongst parts from different years. Like Axonn's mask looking very similar in appearance to the Toa Nuva shoulder armor that came out three years before it. Or how Axonn and Brutika's weapons have a similar aesthetic to them with those interchanging square sections, or how Toa Jaller Mahri's sword the next year followed that same motif. If you really want to get technical and details. Most of these parts actually do share a defining characteristic, spikes/fins. From the Avak dril parts on the forks, the Antrhos blades, even the Hero Factory shields have little spikes on them. Overall I think it gives it a curvy but jagged vibe to it all. The Jaller Mahri chest piece looks really good being right next to the curves of the back wheel, and it holds in some tail lights pretty well. Form fitting and functional at the same time.
