How/when would you want Bionicle to return?
3rdeye88 replied to Logan McOwen's topic in LEGO Action Figures
When Bionicle ended and HF began I thought "Okay well maybe we'll see this come back in another ten-15 years." I'm sure most of us who were long time Bionicle fans and those where were there from the beginning like Sparky and I can draw the correlation between themes like Rock Raiders and Power Miners, the Ninja theme and Ninjago, or the Mission to Mars and Life On Mars themes. My point is Lego is no stranger to pulling a theme out of the vault, dusting it off and giving it an updated vibe to fit with the audience of the time. I see no reason why this can't happen with bionicle. As for when I'd like to see it. I think because of the long evolution that bionicle had that Sparky mentioned. 10 years after a 10 year long theme almost seems too soon for that "wow they brought that back" vibe. I think another ten years on top of what we've already got sounds about right. Give it a nice breath of silence and a generation to come up in between, like they did with the Ninja theme and Ninjago. How would I like it to come back? That's really a tough question. I think it would have to walk a fine line between drawing the new audience in but because it was so iconic and a grown breaking theme, I think lego would have to be very mindful of the people coming back to it who knew it from the old days. Lego loves building on its heritage. So I don't see why there couldn't be a mix of old and new within the toyline itself. If they can bring back some of the old iconic elements(tahu's flame sword for example) then that'd be great, but new molds of the classics might help with the integration of the current system at the time. It wouldn't be any different than them recreating the HF 1.0 hero's heads in Brain Attack to fit the new heads and visors they introduced. I definitely think keeping the more detailed aesthetic is important. Those kind of parts came about because lego had really taken to using CAD and computing power to design the parts. I don't see why making detailed parts would be so hard come 2025 So I personally would want that pistony biomechnical feel back. Lego's use of multicolored parts(I'm thinking specifically of the chima UB's heads) and rubber+plastic molding technology has come a good ways in these past couple of years so maybe a toa torso with some rubbery fleshy bits could work to. I say classic lego revamping of a theme should be used. Take what worked from the previous theme, keep some actual elements from it but integrate what's come along since then and allow for the newer innovations to make it better. Very much like they do with the Star Wars theme and actually recreating the same vehicles or scenes over again. Story wise. I think I would fell best about a complete reboot. Tell the story over again but refined and more planned out this time. Like a Super Hero movie reboot. Bionicle was an amazing story, but towards the end it got too convoluted and confusing, and I was an avid follower of the story. I can get sucked into Biosector nowadays link hopping and reading up on all the little various things that come up just reading one character or place's bio. If you look at bionicle now I personally think that it looks very much like a story that was made up as Greg went along. The reboot should allow for a longer arc of preplanning and navigation of Narrative. Kinda like Lucas writing all seven episodes of Star Wars before the first one was even made. I do kinda long to see the toa Mata step out onto a beach again and go on the journey to discover themselves. But I would like to see that in a more visual medium. Again when Bionicle came along the technology wasn't quite there and lego didn't quite have the means to give it that visual justice I feel it needed. It wasn't till a few years later that they summed up the resources to start telling the story in a visual manner that worked. I maintain that at least the first two movies did a good job at telling the story, because they were serious attempts to tell a deep compelling story in a serious manner, and not slapping a bunch of dumb kooky voices onto the characters and making them dance around like loons. I think if bionicle were to come back at that time there would likely be many creative industry professionals who could site bionicle as an influence and would be very enthusiastic of bringing those iconic characters back to the screen. I know I would be.Heck if I ever make my way into the creative industries(like I hope to) and became successful at it. I'd take a stab at proposing a big comeback of Bionicle to lego. I personally have enjoyed the recent retelling of Batman's story through Christopher Noland's eyes, as well as Superman. I see no reason why bionicle couldn't be retold as long as it was handled by someone who respects and understands the core material and wants to do it justice. In summery, I would like to see bionicle brought back and redone. Because it was told well, but I think it could be retold better as many of the stories we love have been in recent years. -
I did introduce myself before that post. Its not my fault you idiots don't read other threads. See NOW I'm insulting you. I make one unpopular opinion and all of you jump on my dick about it. "OMG he said a thing I like is crap I'm so insulted now ;n;" Really? Grow up. Learn to accept an opinion that doesn't agree with yours. And by the way, I wasn't the only one who said something along the lines of what I said. SO go ram your butthurt feelings about it down his throat to. You guys keep saying I should respect other people's opinions, what did I really say about other people's opinion pertaining to it "there's clearly no point in taking them seriously" and I was being factitious when I said it. If you think these things are good, fine you're entitled to your opinion. And I'll think you're an idiot who doesn't know good anything if it walked up and kicked you in the balls. And with that I'm done. You guys are unreal.

and one I stand by. Okay if they had just done the beasts...that'd been fine. But we have "beasts" that come from below the surface of the planet that look similar to the aesthetic of the aliens in PR, and then the Heros opperate mechs to fight them. If it was any one element by itself I'd agree that its an homage, or a hat tip, but its all the elements together at the same time that make me call it a blatant rip-off. Its like "did you guys even try coming up with some ideas this year?" You keep saying I'm insulting people. Who am I insulting? Just because you're offended by my opinion about a thing isn't my problem. I suspected that it was discussed somewhere. I came in late. So give me the synopsis of the argument please. And yes I would like to know more about the Transformer community. Its my opinion, and I'm entitled to it just as you are. Its not even an opinion about you so why do you care? I think its complete crap and I'm going to keep calling it crap. If that bothers you then too bad. I don't remember there being anything in the rules about having to have opinions everyone likes. I'm not Emmet. I'm gonna have my opinion regardless of whether someone like you is okay with it or not.The above statement covers why I call it a rip-off. Oh and I'd just like to get something cleared up...Just because you guys had a conversation about something means that you can't ever have the conversation again when a newcomer comes along? Thanks for the warm welcome you guys.

Okay if you want to get specific. This is exactly what I'm talking about. The gaps in the bionicle armor part are more part of the aesthetics. The gaps in the HF armor is ...I don't even know. Its certainly not helping. And the worse part, if I wanted to used this design there really isn't **** I could do to make that look any better or cover that hideous mess up. However the BIonicle part gives me plenty of connection points in the exactly same amount of space to put something over that if I felt it needed covering up. A simple 1X3 lift arm in dark red would probably be enough. Sure, it may be bulkier but at least I have the option to work something in there. HF has this nice clean flat aesthetic, until you look at the underside of it and then it looks like a kibbly mess. And I can't stress the options thing enough. My counter argument is then why is Technic still so wildly successful? There's more coming out this year. A more complex engineering based system is exactly what technic is. So clearly there's a place for that. Bionicle was built off the back of that system so it was inherently engineering oriented from day one. Bionicle at first was a stylized form of technic...which is still around. You say it brings it more in line with system. Well we already have system. Go build with that then if its too complicated for you. "what's good for kids is often good for adults as well." I absolutely don't agree with that.I like my friend Liam's(welcometothedarksyde on Deviantart) take on things. Targeting a slightly older demographic has the advantage of including them but still getting younger kids interested because young children often want to partake in what the older kids are doing. You look at advertizing and that a common tactic used in the commercials. The toy itself may be intended for a younger demo but they get a kid(kids) a few years older to be in the commercial. I think lego could have the best of both worlds here. Have the simpler "canister" figure style sets and provide a range of complexity throughout the theme with bigger sets. Towards the end that's what Bionicle had with the canister figures, then the varying pricepoint vehicles. The best thing to come out of HF design wise in my opinion was Witch Doctor and even that was kinda hamfisted and clunky. I see what you mean. That's a very fair point I think. To each their own. In the grand scope of things I'd say hero factory is the "normal difficulty" setting, Bionicle "hard mode" and technic the "ultra hard" mode. At least it can be when on the level of guys like Sheepo or Sariel. *looks at which topic this is* Oh you're completely right. I don't know why but I thought this was the HF discussion topic. Aanchir and I should probably move that conversation elsewhere or start its own thread.

I don't really understand that reference. What is the Tansformer Fanbase like?I think you're sugar coating it to be polite, If you think its crap(like I do) then just say it. I'm just saying what I actually think and feel. My honest opinion is that Its complete crap and calling it anything less than that would be me sugar coating things. I'm just not going to do that. I'm going to be honest with myself and be honest with you guys. See, that would have worked, but I just don't get that feeling from Pacific Rim. It takes itself too seriously, doesn't poke fun at the genre in anyway. I get the feeling that it was meant as a serious attempt at that genre. To get back on topic. Has there been any kind of interview or dialog from the set designers about HF 2014 and why they went with Minifigs or any kind of acknowledgement that they blatantly ripped off Pacific Rim? I know they'd say they were "Inspired" but that's just polite "company policy forbids us from admitting we're out of ideas and had to rip off the movie of the week this time around." I like that they went the Minifig route simply for the fact that it will hopefully get the Minifig fanatics to buy a HF set or take more interest because there's a Minifig, which will hopefully push sales in a better direction. I took Huw on Brickset doing a review as a sign of that already happening. But at the same time it kinda sucks because those parts end up taking a lot of the "real estate" this time around.

I couldn't agree more with you about the fact that the parts are the best thing and the story has fallen by the wayside, at least as a secondary thing. I Was a big fan of the story aspect of Bionicle though. So to see that become what it has with HF was saddening and a little angering.Overall my MOCing has moved more to a style of blending everything. I've taken to integrating way more smaller system elements into my MOCs and using Bionicle and HF interchangeably. Dala is probably a good example of that. I try to break it down to a more simple aspect of shape recognition. "does this Bionicle part or HF part have the right shape I need here?" The biggest decision I make when I start a MOC now is how much system will factor into it. And it varies from almost none at all to greatly. And I've done a few predominantly System MOCs. I also buy way more system sets than I used to. I find I use my bionicle weapon and armor parts more now than I use like the body parts, torsos, and stuff like that. Your system MOCs have been really neat to BTW. Very simple but effective approach to things.

Very good points there but I have to disagree about the completeness look of Hero Factory. A prime example that stands out in my mind is this. And I'd consider the look that a HF shell on a bone piece when looked at from the other angle as incomplete. I don't have CHI Worriz yet but I imagine that if you spin him around and look at him from the back he doesn't look so good. Bionicle definitely had its case of this to but it wasn't so blaringly obvious and took far less effort to cover up. A Shin piece took maybe one lift arm or a brick or plate to cover it up decently. There was also more solid connections to do that in those parts to. OOO or OO pin holes which clutch studs. You only get that on the extra long bone pieces and none at all in the bottom three smallest bone parts(I believe you guys refer to them as A and B beams?). Hero Factory has to be put more back to back to look good from all sides. Bionicle carried its aesthetics throughout the parts, front, back side to side. The very part you use is an example of that, the Piraka torso.I would say your bit about the MOC sitting on your desk is an indication of what I mean. You can throw together something simple that looks alright, but its nothing special. It took way more thought and ingenuity to get something nice out of bionicle. It required more of the builder and that's why I maintain that it was a better system than HF was/is. So when you say you build better with Hero Factory, that's like saying "I play this game better on easy mode." That's just how I see it being a long time bionicle MOCer who had quite a collection of MOCs about 6-7 years before HF ever came around. That would be a good Thread. *nods* I also think a big "huh" with hero Factory this year is that they didn't ever explain what was up with the guy sending out the brain bugs all over the place. That was very much set up as a "next week on..." and then we just pick up with some construction dudes digging a hole. It was a bit jarring for anyone actually following the series. So unless they circle back on it, It looks like it'll remain a mystery, a-"Why did the chicken cross the road? He look a penny, OH NO THE PENNY IS CURSED!" Some of us are still wondering what was up with the chicken.I'm sorry. I know I've contributed to the hostility. But I feel its that classic "Your opinion is fine, so long as it agrees with mine' which mine often doesn't. I contributed to it to in turn. Two wrongs don't make a right.(but three rights make a left).

I wouldn't hold your breath for a clean neatly wrapped up ending. They left pretty much every story arch open if they wanted to come back to it and unless they come with some grand mastermind scheme they'll probably remain roads that lead to nowhere. Bfahome has a good point there.

You're right there. Its shifted to Ninjago and Chima and now whats left is a hollow husk of what used to be a great line of buildable figures with a really well thought out story written by a really nice guy. Now its a damned marketing bit. That's all it is. The episodes are practically 22 minute commercials. They might as well just say 'HEY KIDS GO BUY THE TOYS" for that length of time. And I say that because of this. http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2011/087/c/d/me_meeting_greg_farshtey_by_3rdeye88-d3cnqyi.jpg This is me meeting Greg Farshtey at Comic Con 2006. I talked to him for about two hours and I really grilled him for answers. Like I was telling....Vader? I think that's him. Its all just hearsay, but as of 2006 he was already working on the 2009 story line, but he was having problems because lego had drastically cut the budget to Bionicle. It was more than half from 2006's to then on from what he told me. So that makes me think lego was checking out on it those last three years. Like I said that's just what I've heard directly from the guy who wrote the story for Bionicle. *shrugs* So maybe while the actual decision to end it was abrupt it sounds like they were whittling away the budget for it over the last few years. I look now and we go from 2 episodes to one, one to total crap. I can't help but see a pattern. At least time we see it coming instead of all being blindsided. This is an entire website devoted to adults talking about toys on the internet. So bite me.M. Night shamalamadingdong mutilated the film, but yes I have seen some good Avatar toys. http://brickset.com/...-Last-Airbender

 With Furno last year and Fangar this year. Its nice that there's now a tattered and clean option that are recent. Now I just wish Lego would do more colors than just black. Don't get me wrong, black capes are very versatile, but a white one would be nice, or maybe red and blue. Ya know, color options.Which part that's on queen beast are you referring to? ^^^ This. And because A, Mungus is a Big Fig in Minifig form, B His name is Mungus Hu-mungus which has already been explained on this thread. C because popular conception of mammoths are that they're really freakin big, even though they're not really all that big. And D, relative to other animals, like a crocodile or a lion...even modern elephants are huge.
-
If you guys honestly think that crap the IFB episode and Pacific Rim is good then there's clearly no point in me taking your opinions seriously. And that's all I'll say on that matter. Oh and VBBN, just because its meant for kids doesn't mean it can't be good. Go watch some Looney Tunes, or Avatar The Last Air Bender. Those are intended for kids and the latter especially is an absolute masterpiece. There's no reason something intended children can't be good for adults to. This is the kind of thinking that makes me wonder why all of Hero Factory has gone downhill from the early and middle days of Bionicle. Towards the end Lego was just checked out on it. But this, It could have been the rebirth of a great story tied into the toyline, but it wasn't. It was something slapped on to sell more sets. Hell Chima has been better than this. I'm so ready for Hero Factory to get the ax in 2015.

"are way too specialized" That's what everyone who harps on bionicle says about it. This is way too specialized. And I had a response to that to. Sometimes the best solution is a simple one. But when over done or if that's all the MOCer does then I agree, its uncreative, boring and gets stale really fast. I guess it doesn't have much to do with it. I won't mention it again. The clean and flat thing is nice, but its also very aesthetically limiting because all the HF shells are angular and do give that very clean manufactured look then there's various addons that give different options. They were just getting back into some textural options with Brain Attack Last year. I'm with you on that one. Something more rustic, some wood characteristics and morefully organic options would be nice. I don't mind HF base armor parts I just wish they had more variants of parts that function just like HF armor but fundamentally looked different and then you could still do the addon thing. I know its got its own thread, but the LoC Ultrabuilds are the first step in that direction I think. Same function very different vibe about the look of the parts. So I'm actually looking forward to what ever comes next. If 2015 turns out to be the end of HF it wasn't that great IMO, the parts are really nice and that's about it. That's like comparing digital photography and photoshop to traditional photography where you actually have to know what you're doing from setting the camera and developing the photo to get the composition right. HF is the Digital Camera And Photoshop of Constraction MOCing. You're right It does allow for more people to get the same level of complexity without as much work. The way you guys praise Hero Factory like that to me instead sounds like "Hero Factory, Bionicle, but for stupid uncreative people." The difference is Bionicle worked well on its own long before Hero Factory came along and Hero Factory just never really worked well on its own. Throw a pure Hero Factory build together and it looks like its missing a lot. Its gappy and only looks good from certain angles. It needs a lot of covering up to look even half way decent. That's why I'm half way hoping what ever they come up with next they either diversify it or do another type of system tweak to what already exists to address some issues. Because like I said before, HF does indeed address some of the issues Bionicle had but it came with its own, which Bionicle makes up for.

I'm hoping for a hybrid system. Standard CCBS ball and socket joints but then like mini ones for fingers and toes and tapered articulation. How cool would it be to have a part with both kinds of ball joints on it? Lego basically needs to make this but as one piece. I'm really hoping we get to see Mini ball joint style fingers/minifig sized arms next year now that the system is in place. Maybe they'll do Minifig heros again but with these instead, thus making them true mini-heros. *squee* I'll tell you the same thing I told Aanchir, don't fault the system just because you sucked at using it. "its too specific" no, you're just not creative enough to find a use for that part. I dare you to find a bionicle part I can't use. You're talking to a guy who NPU'd BURPs and LURPs without even realizing it. And I'll tell you the same thing I also told Aanchir, by themselves both systems have some weaknesses, but together Bionicle and Hero Factory cancel out each other's short comings with their strengths. Where Hero Factory is too Generic, Bionicle has a nice specific look solution somewhere in it. Where Bionicle lacks the versatility and structure, Hero Factory's bone system makes up for that. Together, they work really really well.To a point, yeah they can be boring, but sometimes the best solution is to use a mask as a mask. Example. Masks/heads are really great for shaping though. Very recent example. Example(Both Bionicle and HF masks in this one) Another example. Look, this one uses a whole bunch of masks! And that's without going to grab other people's examples. Like I said...Don't fault the system because you sucked at using it.

Thank you. At least someone here understands what good cinema is besides me. I suppose most of you that think this HF episode was good also think Pacific Rim was like the best thing ever. Good film appreciation is dying. And the beautiful thing is, you can't count this as off topic because Hero Factory 2014 is totally ripping off this terrible movie.
-
I definitely agree that new parts are interesting, but what if they brought back some pretty cool older parts in some cool recolors? Wouldn't that be worth it? Hero Factory still employes some Bionicle parts(piraka feet are annoyingly on most of the Ultrabuilds), so they could still bring some old parts back. I kinda wish they would if it means old parts in new colors. Any particular piece you'd love to see recolored? I personally love Tahu Mistika's mask but it sucks it only ever came in dark red. That mask would probably be my favorite if it came in black or silver. Some more translucent weapons would be pretty rad to if they could do that.

Thank you. The brain being "popped out" like that was a total accident. I was originally just gonna bend the tail up sharply but through working on it I guess I pushed it just right and it popped up like that. If I pull the connections off it retains that shape. Seriously if you have a brain bug lying around bend the tail up and push in on the brain part. It doesn't hurt the piece at all and you can pop it back down to normal. Rubber parts are so awesome cause you can bend em around and mess with them and it doesn't mess up the part. I'm glad it looks scary. Though I don't know if I wanted downright scary or just intimidating. Either way that's a compliment so thank you. :) Inika sword? Oh You mean the Toa Inika Hali laser harpoon. Right I had it and the light that originally comes in that one is green so I had to get a small screwdriver and open that one and another inika weapon that had a red light in it and swap them so that it'd fit the color scheme here. Thank you. I'm glad you like it. ...Bu...but then you'd squish it. Its only a plastic lego model. I kid. Thank you as well for your kind words. I'm glad you guys like my first MOC posted here. This would make a really cool custom Chopper. Quick someone call Paul Tuttle Jr. and get him on it. But if it does get made into a real chopper, I call...second dibs. Cause the guys who make it get first.

Which I'm not hearing from them, I'm hearing from you. Well since they talk about it at conventions I don't suppose emailing Kevin would allow for that? I imagine there's some kind of "word of mouth is okay, anything else isn't" rule. Regardless of what they actually do, the plans or layout or machining data is somewhere on hand if they wanna pull out an oldie. Who knows maybe all the molds are in Antarctica next to Walt Disney's head or something *conspiracy theory* Lol If I ever get the chance I will do just that. And its like you say, it could be this it could be that for all we know. The simple truth of the matter is we don't truly know. Leewan makes a very good point. Will it be the exact same hat or will they tweak it a bit and be a new mold? Old mold can make a return when they want them to. So all bets are off.

Aaaaand like I said, when I get actual proof of it from them or an official source from lego I'll believe it instead of taking your word for it. That's exactly what I'm talking about. Its all hearsay. So sorry if I'm not inclined to just believe what someone on a forum says. But in the spirit of entertaining the discussion, that seems pretty drastic. What if they wanted to use the part again? Someone get the jack hammer?

I'm actually looking forward to these moreso than the entire lineup of HF this year. Sir Fangar has that cape, capes are always cool in constraction, not to mention the trans blue. Mungus as a figure is way disappointing since he's a mammoth and mammoths are ya know...big...and he's...kinda not. But the trans blue bits and brown bone pieces on him are of interest. I totally called the feather elements on Fluminox. I was talking to a friend on DA and I said "watch the phoenix will have either new feather elements or they'll be two color molded." I ended up being right on both counts. Then he's got some trans neon orange bones to. Pretty much everyone has something interesting to offer except for the panther dude. He seems to have stuff you can get in every other set with the exception of his head.I also think that the UB's might be an indication that Lego might be ready to cancel HF. Cause now they're making parts in that system with different flavors for another theme. Either way I love the kind of "LOTR" Elvish-esque vibe the new parts from these Ultrabulds are giving off. I'll definitely be picking up Sir Fangar when he first hits my local TRU's shelves.
-
Very nice. ANd whoa yeah. That's in pounds so what's it gonna be in USD's?! Wonder if that will be adjusted for over here. I had thought about getting that cause it does look like its got a lot of good parts in it but I was expecting it to be the Rock Jet Machine of this series. It looks like it'll be even pricier so Noooo thank you. There's plenty of other good pickins from wave 2 and LoC's Ultrabuilds. HF is getting way more bigger sets this time around. A $20(Splitter beast) and a $25(Evo XL machine) set in wave one, then the Surge Rocka combo machine and Queen Beast set. I did answer the question. I said "Everything about it sucks" So I'll run through that list.Story was rushed, and didn't really do well to resolve itself "Op we're out of time okayeverythingsbetternowthecityisn'tstillamesskaybai" *credits* Voice overs were bland and badly scripted animation sometimes didn't match what was happening with the voice over work. The character designs were weird. Breeze took off her helmet and looked hideous(like when Brian Shaved) The beasts were lame. "yeah lets just whack your guns out of your hands before we mess you up" the machines were completely *Long bleep* ING USELESS! They bailed out or they got destroyed in like five seconds. I'd rather be equipped with a butter knife than one of those things. At least then my toast will be the way I like it. XP UGH it was just terrible you guys. I really hope they redeem themselves next year.
-
Likewise. I've got a whole ziplock back of em and I don't really know what to do with them cause the ends look ugly and the colors aren't that versatile. Everything's either green, old purple, red black or light gray. And there's not enough of either to do something with in that one color. Its kinda all or nothing. It sucks to, cause those are some dang sturdy parts. If they refined the system they'd make for great structure building. People could make framework and then stick brick on it. I think Znap was lego's answer to K'nex.
-
Have you seen it? Its F***ing Terrible! Everything about it sucks. It was really bad by even Hero Factory standards which are already pretty lame compared to the hayday of bionicle. Its all goin down hill man. Lego's checkin out on Hero Factory like they Checked out on Bionicle.
