My largest LDD-Project: Simpsons House
Randal replied to Jey_Bee's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Not bad. Before Universe mode, I made a scale model of my house where 1 stud x 2 plates = six cubic inches (15 cubic cm). It got to be rediculously large, but since I was able to make the walls 6 inches thick throughout, the scale was pretty much spot on inside and out. Unfortunately, that computer has a bad HDD... :( -
I use LDD because I don't have my bricks anymore. And I use it every day, as I use LDD to make a webcomic. While there are a few things I'd fix in the anti-aliasing department and maybe the brick selection department... to have it be a little more lenient on "legal" connections, I find it's a very useful tool. I make mocs with it, but I also use it to make official builds. To me, LDD is a virtually bottomless bucket of bricks that is only limited by my RAM and processor. As for LXF files of even the largest size, they take up surprisingly little space on your hard drive. I also think that as time goes by, the rendering and lighting of the models will improve almost to that of actual bricks. I think they hold it back for now on account of the average system limits, but I'd like to see an option that allows you to ramp things up, graphics wise, if your system can take it. (Today's update is a little NSFW, but for the most part... I let my kids read a lot of them.)

Pirates being shelved this year was the inspiration for today's Brick. I hope The Disney PotC sets are worthy compensation. They had some nice ships and sets in those movies. AFOL parents would have skipped them both and bought their kids some Lego set(s)

Good stuff. I like the guy wrangling the pig.

I was tired and thought "make and create" when I saw "model team". If a benevolent moderator would perhaps move the topic, I'd appreciate it.

Does anyone have the instructions to the White House? I've been wanting a white house set for my comic and every time I check brickset there's still no pdf there. :S

[KEY TOPIC] Official LEGO Sets made in LDD
Randal replied to Calabar's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Don't let me stop you from doing what you want, I was just under the impression that this was an encyclopedic index. I was just thinking that endless multiple redundancies would clog up the thread and make an already large project thread more confusing. But if you want to show your versions of what's already here, by all means, as long as the powers at be don't have a problem with it. ;)- 5,046 replies

[KEY TOPIC] Official LEGO Sets made in LDD
Randal replied to Calabar's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
I'm seeing some multiple sets being listed here (two of which I know for certain I already posted.) Seeing as this is more of an index of sets than "hey look what I did", I'd like to reiterate an earlier suggestion to check the index on the front page which has been recently updated to see what sets are already posted and work on the sets that are not.- 5,046 replies

Voting topic - LDD + Real Bricks class
Randal replied to Superkalle's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
As I stated in my vote for the all LDD contest, I invite any LDD naysayers to click on the link in my sig. I spend every day working at making LDD images look better than the original screen shots. You can do a lot to add depth and proper shading to them, as well as making transparent pieces look more like they should. (If you are sensitive to subject matter, you might want to pass over some of my entries. most of them are in good taste though, and I let my kids read most of them... I'm thinking of going through them and putting asterisks in the titles of the ones that are more mature in content.) On to my votes. I based my votes on ones that I would love to have the LXF files to so that I could look them over or maybe even use in Brick (with proper credit and linkage given, of course). My system of voting is 2 points to my favorite, 1 point to my second favorite and an honorable mention to my third favorite. (I'd love to be able to award 3, 2 and 1 points to the top three, but it's not my system.) Designer: Igorlando EntryID: 220 Name: Anastasia Astoria International Hotel (This is a great modular building and looks as good or possibly even better than the ones with official set names.) 2 points. Designer: vynsane EntryID: 214 Name: Phoenix Corp. Fireball (This piece looks both well thought out and fun. Not only is it a hover car, but it looks like it's been modified into a hot rod.) 1 point Designer: slacker int EntryID: 209 Name: Blacktron 3 Accipiter Attack Fighter (While a bit overbuilt, this is on a parallel to the direction in which I'd like to see Space Lego going. I'd like to see modern SP III style re-imagining of established classic themes, even the old ships that had transparent studded plates as their canopies.) Honorable Mention -
Voting topic - LDD Only Class

Speaking as someone who spends every day working to enhance LDD images to make them look great, I would invite the LDD haters to check out the link in my sig. (though some days turn out better than others) I keep on planning to make a thread showing how to bring out LDD image potential, but my computer time in the last month or so has been limited, which is why I wasn't able to finish my entry in time. With that out of the way, I like a lot of the pieces here, they are fun and imaginative, but the ones that made me smile the most were: Designer: The Lanterne Rouge EntryID: 119 Name: HAGA DEFENDER (Some of the design elements here made me drool, specifically the canopy and the overall shape.) 2 points Designer: Captain Blockbeard EntryID: 108 Name: Golden Gander SteamPunk Airship (I'm a sucker for good steampunk. The part I loved most about this is that it was a complete diorama and not just an airship.) 1 point Designer: Bojan Pavsic EntryID: 146 Name: Circus Arena (This just plain made me smile. It's fun and bright and there's a bit of a story going on.) Honorable Mention Personally, I'd love to use these 3 entries in future Brick comics, if the designers approve. Each would be given a Link to the designers work. -
Is this a duplicate topic? I don't see my post in here and I'm sure I answered this question. (Which was "my favorite Sci-fi theme isn't officially a theme... I like the steampunk stuff. (I wish it was official) for my favorite official theme, I'd have to say the current Space Police III stuff and the Atlantis stuff. The ships look snazzy, Red and green subs are unusual and look good, the whole Lego space gangster thing is fun to build and looks cool." I love the space sets that originally came out and then all the way up until the early 90s... the stuff from the later 90s until the more recent non-licensed sci-fi themes were not my cup of tea. I didn't like the direction the ingenuity and aesthetics were taking in the space sets of the time. I liked the Aquazone stuff though. I like building the newer sets. some of the "action/sci-fi" stuff from the period where I didn't like the space sets were fun too, like the agents and underwater sets. Another fun series to build now, though not quite Sci-fi is the world racer series. It makes me think of a less cartoony version of the HB Wacky Racers cartoon back in the 70's.

LDD on PC or Mac?
Randal replied to Superkalle's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
HP laptop running XP. My other laptop (Toshiba) had Vista, but it died. -
I think you can look at the index and pretty much tell who to ask if they're working on something via PM. As for creations, I'm sort of like fish or reptiles with my creations. Once I finish them, they're pretty much on their own. I favor the Wiki approach, where if anyone sees an anomaly that warrants changing, they fix it and post it.

I didn't build that whole set, but I built the little jet she flies. I seem to remember getting her to fit if I leaned her back all the way. For some reason though, I changed her hair when I refit the jet as a sub for a Brick strip. Rather than post the strip, I'll just leave a link to it and warn that the subject matter is a little edgy. Where is the Red Coats torso?
Randal replied to Captain Bayonet's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
While Universe Mode has improved the face selection a good deal, the torso selection is still dismal and in some cases makes no sense. For instance, you can use Mr Krabs' torso, but they don't provide his head. When they were choosing decals to use for this, if there were only a set amount of spots open for torso selection, I'd have preferred a Pirate or Imperial torso. As for red or blue coat... I think the paint is mainly the black and white details, so soldiers could be red or blue coat, depending on how you color filled the torso. Or you could potentially have orange, purple, yellow and green coats... For now though, the space skulls seems to be a fun looking (if not accurate) stand in. -
[KEY TOPIC] LDD 3 bugs and brick errors
Randal replied to Zerobricks's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
I was able to get the two orange ones to fit together, though I don't remember how. If you look at my comic with Paul Watson stealing the Bat Boat, the Bat Boat is actually an agents boat with those two pieces needing to fit next to each other. LXF file -

I took the Dino Hummer posted in here and built it's alternate version. I will post it when I have access to the computer I stored it on. The version posted here is the original set put out five years ago, which had a missile launcher pod on the back. It seems the entire line has been relaunched with traps instead of guns and ammo. I downloaded the attack version and reworked into this years set. The biggest difference is that a cage has replaced the missile launcher pod on the back. Some time ago, I said I'd post these three models, which I am now doing. I used them in a comic a while back and keep forgetting to post them in here. Click on the images for the LXF files. 6852 Sonar Security 1704 Ice Planet Snow Grader Edit: Here is the Dino Trapper set... 7296 Dino 4WD Trapper- 5,046 replies

It is a very muted green. Like metallic moss or something. I finally featured this MOC in Brick. I like yesterday's comic better, but this one isn't bad.

LDD 4.0 to be released in September
Randal replied to Superkalle's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
at no point did it say "more robust parts list" or "numerous bug fixes". I'm a little worried. -
I like it, but seeing as it's SPIII mobster, it might fit in better to the theme if you figured out how to add the ever present swept front black wings and swept back black rear wings on just about every mobster vehicle. (I think there's a tongue twister in there somewhere.)

8158 Speed Racer & Snake Oiler 8159 Racer X & Taejo Togokhan I had to modify the wheels a little. However, I found it cool that you can put Speed and X's helmet designs on their helmets. Also, most of Taejo's black was from stickers, so I added a little black to it.- 5,046 replies
