Photoreal LEGO Rendering
Philo replied to Renderbricks's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
t01o0714.dat, t02i3333.dat, t02o3333.dat are tori primitives used to get bevels on studs and soften logo. But I see no reason why your extruded logo3 file gives weird result, it's geometry is very simple and flawless IMHO. See a colored snapshot (LDView) showing its structure: -
Photoreal LEGO Rendering

Amazing images! Just missing logos indeed ;) I don't see why these logos shouldn't work - but you have to look closely at the batch files provided byt the author: to make them work you need to rename file stulogo_v3.dat into stulogo.dat. Don't forget to place all tori primitives (t01o0714.dat, t02i3333.dat, t02o3333.dat) in your LDraw\p folder. -
PF Wiring Question
Philo replied to Blakbird's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Sure it's possible! But it's kind of garland like, and cable is no longer available from LEGO. You better do some cable splicing between a NXT/EV3 half cable and a half PF extension cable. Connect the two wires on RJ connector latch side (black and white) of the Mindstorms cable to the middle wires of PF cable. Another possibility is to use Mindsensors GlideWheel PF Motor controller for NXT or EV3. More expensive, but you get a position encoder... -
PF Wiring Question
Philo replied to Blakbird's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Sorry to chime in late, but it seems you figured out everything... much more educational this way -
Because of its construction (conductive rubber) RCX sensor bas an internal series resistor of about 500 ohm. This acts also to limit current if switch is inadvertently connected on a motor port. For the same reason NXT sensor has a 2.2k series resistor. Except for this protection function it is not useful, so I wouldn't bother to add it.

No... except putting less load on them! This device is not a capacitor, but a thermal fuse limiting current in the motor for safety reasons. Here it looks like the power to your motor will be limited by receiver or battery pack anyway! Yes it does! V2 is able to supply 1.5A per channel, 2A and more for short time, while V1 is rated 600mA per channel, 1A for short time. More details here.

[HELP] Power Function
Philo replied to astakos's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Is it V2 receiver or your battery pack that limits power??? -
That's because LPub integrated pdf generator uses next standard paper size greater than needed dimensions. You either have to choose your page dimensions to fit standard paper size (and because of some rounding issues it can be tricky to avoid a thin white line around colored background), or use png export and rebuild pdf from there using another tool. This later option is not made easier because lpub names the images xxx_page_1...xxx_page_9...xxx_page_10...xxx_page_99...xxx_page_100... so files doesn't sort easily in correct order! Edit: This can be another solution (not tested!)

[HELP] Power Function
Philo replied to astakos's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yes, but a V2 receiver is highly recommended! See this -
Maybe you have a buggy part that has some element far outside main volume, making its envelope really big?

Lego Spybotics
Philo replied to ajne429's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That's indeed the only solution. Spybotics cable contains a red LED and a phototransistor, converting RS232 serial levels to/from light. This end plugs into spybotics that contains opposite optoelectronics elements. -

Ah - sorry, looks like I missed a chapter in the story ;) -
Connecting Tri-Liftarms
Philo replied to SNIPE's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
What about using Technic pulley this way? Granted, it is not centered, and end peg holes are not exactly one stud apart, so there is some part stress - I have not tried with physical parts... -
stickers/decals in mlcad
Philo replied to lixiuus's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
You have to create the stickers as LDraw parts. The tool of choice for that is Ldraw Pattern Creator. There is a documentation (automatic translation from French) here. -
May I suggest to use LDraw/MLCad/SR3Dbuilder where these parts are available, as well as most Technic parts?...

I have not tested the new BIs, only the ones of 31313. If you double tap on a part, you get a popup windows showing item number, color, and for some parts (axles, beams) its length. Not perfect (name and design number could be displayed too), but it helps! Overall, I like them, but like Calabar I find some animations a bit slow to my taste (especially the return to programmed angle/zoom when going to next step).
